How to Declutter Your Closet Without Losing Your Mind (or Shorts)

“How to declutter your closet” is one of those tasks that tend to make even the most organized homeowners quake in their boots. Because sure, the bathroom is clean, the bedrooms pristine. But behind door No. 3 lies a mess so colossal, it almost qualifies as a Superfund site.

There’s a reason closets have doors, and people keep them closed as if their lives depended on it. But you don’t have to live this way. In this next installment of our 2018 Declutter Your Home Guide, we’ll show you how to declutter your closet so you can actually find things in there.

Start with a blank slate

First, pull everything out and put it in a pile. Before you start sorting and putting anything back in, give this space a good dusting. Vacuum the floor and get those corners. Throw out broken hangers and any other obvious garbage. Now step back and admire your empty closet for a moment.

Since you’re starting over from scratch, you now have the opportunity to organize your things differently. Think about what wasn’t working and how you could change that. Where did things pile up? Where were the odd blank spaces? Where did you tend to lose things?

Keep only what you wear

“The best tip for decluttering your closet is to get rid of clothes that you no longer like or wear,” says Wendy Yates of Abigail-Elise Interiors. After all, statistics suggest that you use only 20% of your wardrobe 80% of the time. To weed out the unnecessary items, ask yourself the following questions:

Have I worn this in the past year?

Does it have holes or stains?

Does it fit well?

Does it look outdated?

Does it work with anything else in my wardrobe?

Do I still like this? (Did I ever?)

  Make three piles: items to keep, items to toss or donate, and items that you’re unsure about. Try on everything in the latter pile so you can further hone your decision. If you truly can’t decide, place that item in a box and stash it elsewhere outside your closet (like your attic or basement). If you haven’t felt compelled to find that box in six months, it’s time to toss its contents.

Hang your clothes back up by color

When you hang your clothes back up, instead of organizing your clothes by season, sort them by color. Because look how cool it looks!

Seriously, though, this is a little hack that can help make deciding what to wear just a little bit easier. It’s a subtle mental trick; the pleasure of seeing things grouped by color may encourage you to maintain that tidiness. And for most of us, arranging things by color is easy and intuitive.

Upgrade and maximize space with inexpensive shelving

“Upgrading your closet system—the wall-mounted base unit, drawers, and shelving—is a great long-term fix if you have the time and resources for it,” says Chris Granata, storage expert for Wayfair. But if you don’t, there are plenty of other options that can maximize closet space better than using only hangers.

Granata recommends hanging shelves for folded items such as towels and sweaters, and over-the-door storage for shoes, purses, and bags. “When using hangers, try to use no-slip ones to maximize space,” he says. “Hangers that are all the same color will also add a sleek look.”

To prevent those closet shelves from getting disorganized, Granata suggests using bins and boxes to store small things like socks and gloves. “Many bins can be written on so you can label them to remind yourself where you stored everything,” he adds. “Shelf dividers will also help separate items that are folded and stacked on the shelf.”

How to organize your shoes

Most shoe storage solutions look like they’re either for billionaires or extreme minimalists who own exactly one pair. So let’s pretend you and everyone in your family have a few pairs. And let’s assume you can’t hire a carpenter to build one of those shoe hotels with accommodations for 4,000 pairs.

A cheaper option is to hang your shoes on the slats of a vertically mounted wooden pallet. This works best if you have mostly high-heeled shoes, of course.

Or you could keep the pallet—and your shoes—neatly tucked underneath your bed.

Try this same under-the-bed trick with an empty picture frame or Ikea’s Komplement pull-out shoe rack ($35).

If you do have some budget for closet built-ins, these drawers are a great solution for the whole family’s shoe collection.

How to store an ironing board

Lastly, we couldn’t help pointing out this very clever idea for storing an ironing board as a pull-down or pull-out in your closet. Now, you can iron your clothes and put them away all in the same space—and have one less excuse to avoid this egregious chore.

How to keep your closet clutter-free

Going forward, Yates loves a method of sorting made famous by Oprah Winfrey.

“After you wear something, hang it in the closet in the opposite direction from everything else,” she says. After six months, anything that hasn’t been hung in the opposite direction gets donated.
