Caitlyn Bidwell is a senior artist at California State University, Long Beach currently studying with a BFA in Visual Development & Illustration under the School of Art’s Illustration Program. Featured in her works are her own original content which have a whimsical theme to them.

Bidwell’s works in the exhibit feature sketches and complete pieces mounted onto the wall. Her pieces are just the right size for a gallery, they are not too large that can take up an entire wall and not so small that you’d need to inch closer. She is able to use light strokes, akin to that of how Disney animators and artists draw. This is because Bidwell has had experience as a Disneyland cast member in the Animation Academy Studio where she taught park visitors how to draw disney characters. Her colored works use vivid vitamin colors, mostly bright. She draws in a cartoon-like style for her characters but draws other elements such as backgrounds and objects realistically. Her pieces explore nature, as depicted in the recurring themes of the works she has in the exhibit.

Bidwell expressed her love for nature during the interview and depicts it not only in her work, but also in the decor she prepared for her side of the exhibit. She draws her work in a way that is reminiscent of fairy tales and children’s storybooks. A unique technique she uses is making her artwork seem immersive. Some of her works were drawn on paper that appear to be pages on books and that they open at a page where a bookmark highlights. She said that her light strokes were like that of Disney’s.

Personally, I absolutely adored Bidwell’s art and art style because they remind me so much of the books I read as a child. She was very accomodating with us students welcomed us, willing to answer questions. Her artworks reflected her positive personality.

The artist, Caitlyn Bidwell, is an artist currently studying at California State University at Long Beach. The artist is a senior that is studying for her Bachelor’s of Fine Art. She is studying under the School of Art’s Illustration Program. The artist is very interested in plants and cartoon drawing. In addition, she loves Disneyland, parks, cats, and coffee. She art explores the idea of nature.

Tidwell’s art uses a lot of warm and bright colors. Other drawings and sketches are black and white. Most of her art contains images of plants. Her art was put in a little frame that is the size of a sheet of paper. In her black and white drawing, there are obvious signs of sketching and erase marks.

The art shows a lot of her creativity through her illustrations. It also shows her personality. In addition, the art has a love for plants and nature. The art also has a fantasy and fairytale-like feel. The art is very children friendly and aims to paint a picture of happiness.

The art really relates to me. As I was walking around the gallery, I was automatically attracted to her drawings and illustrations. This is because I really enjoy fantasies and daydreaming. Furthermore, I am in love with the idea of cottages, and giving objects faces because I think they are warm and fill the viewer with happiness. The drawings goes to help me be reminded of my childhood and the fantasies that would go on in my head growing up.
