I can’t even begin to explain how much of a WHIRLWIND of a month it has been. And what better way to share with all of you the crazy journey we’ve been on then the moment we asked some random people if we could take their photos?!?!?!

It’s crazy to think it’s already been over a month since our big Scotland adventure. And we started it with strangers that could easily turn into friends. The short version, Madi was wearing this adorable dress and we saw family members taking cell phone shots… soooo I ran up and asked if she would like some pro shots. Thank goodness she said yes lol and then bonus ✨her hubs was totally down to throwing on one of the outfits we had brought with us!!! *take note guys!*

WOOHOO! You picked a wedding date. Congratulations! That is a huge step!

I am currently engaged and still have yet to do that. It is a tad bit overwhelming for me during these COVID times and I personally am okay with a longer engagement. That is just me though but we are talking about YOU and getting this special day planned and as stress free as humanly possible.

The wedding date is set. Now, you are in the running for making all the rest of the plans come together from the save the date, venue, decorations, cake, florist, photographer and videographer and the list goes on.

A question I get a lot is "when should I get a Wedding Photographer?"

Don't you fret. I got you.

By now I am sure you are all over Pinterest and following local or destination photographers that you enjoy their work and you want the same style of photos implemented on your day. If you haven't, get on that!

Wedding Date

Wedding Date is number one because when you determine your wedding date everything else can fall into place from there. As you scout out photographers when you reach out the first thing they will ask you is the when and where!? Photographers want to make sure right away that the date is available in their books and where is it because travel fee's may apply. You want to be finding your photographer right away if you want first dibs on your favorite photographer because they are someone else's favorite too. There is nothing worse than getting your heart set on someone/something and realizing they are all booked up for the season! Especially, if you choose a date in the heart of wedding season from May-October.

The Venue

Secondly, you want to know your venue if possible. I had style and venue tied for second but I decided to go with venue. My reasons for knowing your venue is if it is outdoors or indoors. This will tie into style so bare with me! Some photographers are all natural light so if you have a dark venue you are going to want someone that is familiar with darker settings and still capturing the aesthetics of you wedding. Keep in mind your venue and time of day and be sure to ask your chosen photographer how they can accommodate.

The Style

You want to know the style of editing and photographer that you want to capture the biggest milestone for you and your significant other. Do you like light and airy or dark and moody, muted greens and yellows in your photos. When you are looking at wedding photos and you fall in love with a photo. Ask yourself what it is about that photo that you are attracted to. The emotion in the photo, how it is edited and the creativity of it. Keep note so you know what you are looking for to be the best fit for your day!

Budget

Now this is a big one for my bargain shoppers out there like me. I am all for a good deal but there are some things in life that you learn that you get what you pay for and photography is one of them. I bargain shop my clothes, decorations and everything else but when it comes down to my tattoos and who is going to capture the day we dream of forever. You best believe I won't bargain shop for that, that is permanent. The decorations and the venue will change and be filled with a different look, the flowers will change, the people will come and celebrate and leave and go home and continue on with their lives. Your photos, that is what lasts forever. Keep that in mind for your $500-$4,000 wedding packages what you will be getting. You pay for expertise, editing style and what is included. Know your budget because those Instagram famous photographers aren't $500. They work hard to know the industry, up to date on editing styles and programs, their camera and everything else in between. You get what you pay for so know your budget when you are out lookin for vendors for your wedding.

In conclusion knowing these four things will help you find your photographer with ease. You want to know the date you are getting married. The venue for lighting purposes and travel fees and the style you want captured and that will match your aesthetics. Naturally, with wedding planning comes with a budget. You want to know your budget you are wanting to spend on your photographer.

I grew up in the foothills of Denver and spent much of my time outside. It was natural that I fell into landscape photography when I first picked up a camera. Almost every weekend I'd drive to my next adventure with my camera in hand. Once I began to fill my photography with people, portraiture became my new love. I helped a friend shoot a wedding and realized that weddings are one of the most important stories in anyone’s life. They are more than just a celebration. Weddings are a series of moments, big and small, that weave the ultimate story. It's my job to help reveal the love and commitment you both share, and the whole multitude of emotions felt throughout the day. From the understated to the boisterous, from the surprising to the intimate. A slight adjustment can turn a good picture into a great one, so it's important I always stay open to the suggestion of the moment.

Wedding Planning on a Budget: 5 Ways to Save Thousands

Lets just face it, somehow weddings have become one of the most expensive milestones one can celebrate in their lifetime. The day is HUGE and the industry only seems to be climbing, but I am here to give you HOPE! You can have the beautiful, elegant, wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank by using a few tips and tricks that I discovered (and stole a couple from friends) while planning a wedding.

What really matters to you?

It is so important before starting to shell out money to pause, take a moment, and think about the top three things that are the most important on your special day. What have you always thought of being perfect? For me, it was photography, the venue, and my hair. I knew going into planning that I was willing to sacrifice in other areas so that I could have a mountain venue, beautiful pictures that I could look back on forever, and 22” hair extensions so I could feel like a true princess on the best day ever. What is it for you? Music? Venue? Photography? Flowers? Once we solidify what really matters, we can start to cut corners elsewhere.

2. Utilize the people around you!

Do you have an aunt that’s a florist? An uncle that’s a videographer? A mom that’s an architect? Or just crafty people? We were able to get thousands of dollars worth of flowers because my aunt and her friend are florists and were willing to put together my flowers at no cost. All we had to do was pay for the flowers! (Shout out to Flower Moxie who came through with quality, gorgeous flowers!) I will caution you though, when you reach out to someone near you be sure to set clear boundaries and expectations. You do not want to end up with someone flaking at the last minute! That causes too much stress! In addition, its probably because I am a photographer, but I encourage you not to skimp on photography. Aside from your memories, your pictures are the only part of your wedding that you can keep forever.

3. Create a signature drink and use a liquor vendor that allows you to return what you don’t open

We once again saved at least hundreds of dollars by having two signature drinks plus beer and wine instead of a full open bar. My signature drink was a lavender lemonade gin and tonic and Kody’s was Jameson and ginger ale! Our guests loved them and our liquor vendor allowed us to return anything that wasn’t open at the end of the night. Shout out to Apple Jacks! They were a dream to work with. If we had a full open bar, way more bottles would have been opened and we would have been able to return way less!

4. Think of alternative venues

This tip I stole from my coworker who is getting married and was talking to me about her plan. I think she is a genius. She is renting out a very large lodge AirBnB that has a large deck, arbor in the back yard, and is on a lake. How perfect is that? They have a private space where they can have the ceremony, reception, and don’t have to worry about getting anywhere when its over. Now, this may be trickier the more guests you have at your wedding, but it is worth looking into!

5. DIY and Recycled Wedding Decor!

I found that this was the fun part of wedding planning! It is no surprise that Pintrest has tons of DIY wedding decor possibilities. That being said, be careful! Sometimes we can get a little DIY happy and end up spending more money to DIY than we would have to just buy whatever it is in the first place! One of our DIY elements to our wedding was buying old piano books from a thrift store, rolling them up, and putting dried lavender in it for our guests to toss during our send off. On the note of decor, search for a local facebook wedding buy and sell or recycled wedding group. People are always selling tons of super cute decor when their wedding is over!

Last but not least, this day is YOUR day. Whatever you do, whatever you decide, it will be unique to you and your partner. Your wedding is a part of your story and anything that happens (or doesn’t happen) is all part of the new journey you are setting on. Enjoy the time, take lots of pictures, and remember to slow down and breathe through the whole thing!
