where there is love, there will be light
Author’s Note: This is not a full-length fic, but a moodboard and drabble for an AU. I got this idea for Santi after rewatching the classic Barbie movies. Swan Lake was one of my favorite Barbie movies, and the idea of Santi in Swan Lake has been haunting me for a couple weeks, so I had to get it out. I hope you enjoy it!
Warnings: Mentions of military violence and cartels, deception, hidden romance, gunshot wounds
Word Count: 238
Swan Lake AU: Santiago “Pope” Garcia x WOC!Reader
For years, private military advisor Santiago Garcia has worked with the Colombian government to track down Gabriel Martin Lorea, one of Colombia’s biggest cartel leaders. After receiving intel from his informant that his team planted a mole in Lorea’s inner circle, Santi is set on finding her. With your call sign as Swan, you disguise yourself as a ballet dancer and befriend Lorea’s daughter, Solana, at one of the most prestigious ballet theaters in Bogota. You and Santi often meet through fleeting glances and coded messages, eventually falling in love in the quiet moments you can spare. As Santi’s team prepares to take down Lorea, you tell Santi to meet you at the theater where you will perform as the lead role with Solana.
On the night of the performance, you are caught and captured by Lorea’s men. Seeing that you and his daughter bear a striking resemblance, Solana disguises herself as Swan. She performs in your place as the lead act, enchanting and tricking Santi as she lures him away as the Black Swan.
But Santi only discovers the truth a moment too late when you escape to warn him about the bullet. He catches you as his and Lorea’s men clash forces, the two of you caught in the crossfire with the bullets grazing his shoulder and your arm. You lay in each other’s arms, Swan reunited with her Pope as Lorea’s empire burns around you.

Horoscope and character for those brought into the world on July 27 Dynamic, useful: They never stop moving and are always working on something useful for themselves or others. They are great to watch, but they take a while to reach their own conclusions. Additionally, they exhibit a great deal of self-control, adaptability, vigilance, and diplomacy. They don't surrender to outrage effectively, yet when it appears, they can be truly irksome. Stable in their connections: These people are loyal friends and steadfast foes. Prudent, sage, and savvy: They make a career out of dealing with other people. His life frequently intersects with the lives of great people. You will be successful in life if you are patient and persistent. Nonetheless, they won't forestall excruciating encounters at home. Sicknesses in which they could be in peril incorporate heart and kidney diseases, and febrile ailments. Your body is strong and you can live a long life, but you should avoid depression because it hurts your health. How should a child born on this day be raised? with extreme caution because of their unusually subtle and empathetic nature, which constantly inspires them to emotional imitate others. They need to be taught to control their sensual impulses, excessive arrogance, and sense of greatness more than anything else.

Tell Us More Tuesday
My OC post for @onlycodcanjudgeme
Cora "Sunshine" Araceli Jameson
She/her & Pansexual
Birthday: August 1st (Leo)
Eyes: Brown, left. Blue, right
Hair: Auburn/Red
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 150 lbs
Hometown: Sitka, Alaska
Face claim: Kat Dennings
Cora's mother, Daniela, was a Colombian immigrant who joined the US Army and later was recruited into G Squadron of Delta Force. She was proficient in espionage, reconnaissance, and surveillance. After working jointly with the Army Ranger Wing, she began a romance with Harrison, one of the Rangers. Daniela was unaware of her pregnancy until she was nearly five months along when various symptoms began to show. Worried about bringing unnecessary attention to themselves during a mission, Harrison and Daniela kept it secret aside from trusted friends-- Carter Jameson (Delta Force, partner with Daniela) and Keely Jameson (Combat medic). They became Cora's "godparents" and not long later her adoptive parents. Unfortunately, when Daniela goes into labor, there was an ambush. Daniela bleeds out during birth, Harrison is killed. Carter and Keely manage to take newborn Cora to an exfil site. They then settle in Sitka, Alaska in an attempt to protect their daughter.
During childhood, Cora was taught various skills: use of weapons, hunting, survival, basic medical aide, close-quarter combat. This was done for protection. Her parents did not want her to go down the path that leads to war, however, they knew Cora would benefit from the training. Over the years, singing and dancing became Cora's main focus. She was an exceptional ballet dancer. Her skills even landed her doing performances internationally. It seemed that the call to war was unheard.
When Cora was 18, she preformed in Russia. She became close friends with Elena, another ballet dancer. After the show, the two of them were chatting outside of the venue when a van pulled up. Cora kept her guard up but did not want to frighten Elena. A mysterious man exits the van then approaches the women complimenting them on their performance. While Cora and Elena were distracted, a couple other men attacked from the shadows. The back of the van slides open. Elena is unable to fight back or escape. Instincts kick in, Cora manages to fight off the ones attempting to drag her away. During the struggle, Cora sees Elena forced into the back of the van. The mysterious man said to Cora, "I'm sure we will meet again." He joins the group and the van speeds off. This is the moment Cora decides to abandon her ballet career and join the military.
After joining, Cora ends up in the same position as her mother-- Squadron G of Delta Force. When she discovers the same man who trafficked her friend, she becomes obsessed with hunting him and the trafficking ring down. This is forbidden by her superiors as they need to focus on the mission at hand. Vengeance becomes Cora's only focus leading her to go AWOL then later becoming a mercenary.
Her abilities and willingness to dive deeper to fight the evils of the world catch the attention of Price, who meets Cora when she unexpectedly assists in a covert mission. She is asked to join TF 141 and she cautiously accepts.
Cora carries a lot of guilt and shame starting from her birth, to losing Elena, going AWOL, and doing exactly what her parents worked hard to prevent. She sees working for TF 141 as possible redemption.
Personality wise, Cora is upbeat and sociable. She is a huge asset when it comes to networking. Need guns? She knows a guy. Can't get access to a certain event/place? Hold up, she can make some calls. Best street tacos? The vendor knows her by name. Her seemingly positive attitude is a front for all of the anger, guilt and shame. It's all about coping.
Joining TF 141 brought on a new challenge for Cora. This Ghost guy... there's something interesting about him.
Soooo later on Cora and Ghost do form a close relationship, leading to a romantic one. Their clashing personalities compliment each other. The need for feeling safe and unconditional love brings them together.

human verse
Carolina has always been a spoiled baby. Her mother wasn't very active in her life, but her father did her best to make up for it when he wasn't working. Her older brother and father both spoiled her to pieces, doing anything that they could to make sure that Carolina felt loved and happy. This led to her being a bit of a spoiled brat even as she grew older. she's a talented singer and dancer, but with no drive and her family still spoiling her, she rarely gets anything done. she's jealous, clingy, and highly emotional.
supernatural verse (mermaid/siren)
Carolina’s father was a human man with a terrible habit of falling in love with mermaids. This left him raising Carolina and Mateo alone, with the family traveling often. Carolina was never in one place for too long, which gave her major attachment issues. Her father and brother spoiled her in an attempt to make up for her loneliness, but this was more to the detriment of her personality than anything else.

So About The Nutcracker...
It’s an interesting thing that I’ve come across recently. Since the release of the Nutcracker and the four realms there’s been talk about how you can’t change the story, or that the story that get’s changed doesn’t feel like the nutcracker.
And oddly I think I’ve found something that could blow that idea out of the water.
See in Chicago the Joffrey Ballet puts on a version of the Nutcracker every year, and, since it’s inception back in the 1950s it has put on a version of the classic piece by the original creator of the Ballet company Robert Joffrey. However back in 2016 the story was over hauled by writer Brian Selznick (”The Inventions of Hugo Cabert -aka the book that became the movie that became Hugo) and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.
This is important because I’ve read reviews saying that if the story of the Nutcracker doesn’t tell exactly as the original then it’s not the Nutcracker. But I beg to differ.
In this case the story follows Marie, no rich girl living in Victorian England, rather she’s a immigrant in 1892 who’s mother is the sculptor of the Golden Lady Columbia, that premiered at the World’s Columbia Exhibition of 1893. Our lead Marie is dealing with a younger brother Franz who has taken to run around with the street ragamuffins of Chicago of the 1880s, who are busy pilfering tools from the construction site.
Marie isn’t your innocent little girl who is dealing with her younger brother the same way that Clara is in the normal ballet, rather she’s trying to help her mother make ends meet. See her mother is a widow, who seems to be in love with the Impresario, the man in charge of everything that is going on at the fair. He’s the one paying all the workers who are living in, what is essentially, Chicago’s tenement area as they work on the construction of the buildings that will later house some of the wonders of the modern world.
Marie has to struggle to get food for her family and is dealing with trying to control her brother so that he doesn’t end up being turned into the sort of boy that get’s arrested by the cops. She and her family, and the local families come together on Christmas eve night to celebrate, as their house is the largest, and we see the Impresario come in with his assistant Peter who brings the wonder of the fair to the people by putting on a shadow puppet show.
No rich fancy tree, no expensive gifts per-say, just the wonder of his imagination, as he goes about selling the idea of how amazing the fair will be once their hard work is done.
What’s interesting too is that rather than have the villain Rat King just be there, this Rat King actually stems from a friend of the family. The Rat catcher is a slightly sinister man in look, a tall hunched over older man with ratty hair and a limp. However, while he can come off as mean and gives scowls to the boys for screwing around with his bag of dead rats, he comes to the party and shows that he actually is a caring person that seems to be worried about the kids getting into trouble in the work area, and shows a slight interest in Marie’s Mom who respects him as a friend. And the mice, save for Marie’s dream, are all rats that scurry about the stage as puppets or little control car rats.
The Nutcracker while showing up as a nutcracker,
also is Peter in Marie’s dream and the two go on a tour of the Colombian Exhibition.
Instead of the land of sweets, we get the Worlds fair where we see people from all over (and a highly diverse cast as well) coming to see the attractions. Spain is the Conquistadors representing the historical building that was set out in the world pavilion area.
Arabia is the Moroccan Palace in this case and two excellent dancers by the way. China is not tea, but rather the China pavilion that covered it’s history and show cased dancing and festivals at the Fair,
while Marzipan is replaced with Venetian Carnival costumes and regalia for Italy.
The biggest change though is the Russian dance which becomes the Wild Bill Hickok Wild West Show. Having the performer do tricks with a Lasso along with ballet, and three saloon girls that get in on the act. Not to mention the implication that Mother Ginger in this case probably was intended to be the Cracker Jack boy, which premiered at the Worlds Fair in 1893.
The waltz of the flowers becomes the riders of the Ferris wheel, and the biggest departure is that you no longer have the Sugar Plum Fairy, but Marie’s mother’s statue of Lady Columbia come to life as her mother dressed in Gold.
The story focuses on Marie trying to not only deal with her own feelings for Peter, but also wanting her mother and the Impresario to get together, and by the end it leaves an interesting open ending where you can only guess what happens during Christmas breakfast.
The thing is that while the music is there, the interpretation is wildly different. The basic ideas are in place, Nutcracker, the mouse King, going on a dream trip, but everything about it has been flipped on hit’s head. Godfather isn’t involved it’s the guy building the Fair, her dad is dead, she’s poor, her family is dealing with a lot of different issues and you don’t have the fancy things you traditionally see in the telling of this story.
Same can be said for the movie. While there are differences, the underlying story is there and shows the growth of the character of Clara as she deals with her own issues related to losing her mother and being different. Her over all journey is the same, she travels through the world with the Nutcracker and sees amazing sights and deals with the Rat King and everything. The pieces are there but the assembly is a bit different.
This is why I’m curious as to why people dislike this film so much. Deviations from the source material have been going on for decades. From Dumas rewriting the story for the French, to the ballet being a fanfic of the original story, to movies that have long been made of the story. It’s perplexing to me how this one get’s attacked, while others don’t.
Which brings me to another small point, I don’t think Ballet works well on the Big Screen, or at least the way movies are made. Ballet and plays if they’re filmed as such need to be before an audience and, straight up, if you’re going to film a ballet, you may as well do it during the staging of one, as they do with Operas. It only works when you can see the performers reaction to the audience’s reaction.
If you take old Hollywood musicals you’ll notice that a good portion of them are dancing, but typically most of these tend to be set up in a way that would only work with the camera, and also you can do multiple takes as it’s a song and dance number. Ballet is a very different beast that it’s hard to replicate on film without having sections that, like musicals, are talking and just the drama of the story.
So hearing people in reviews say that the Nutcracker should have been more like the Ballet makes me think that a lot of people haven’t really watched a big screen musical in a while. The filming of it would be so very different than what they’re used to in regard to a ballet, that even if they did do the whole thing as a Ballet, you still would have people complaining about it.

Avery’s transformations are bothering me but they are how they are for a reason so I’m gonna work it out of my system by going into detail on all the Mythicals’ transformations
most of the Mythicals’ transformations are mixes of their identities and the cultures and characteristics of the magical beings they represent, with the color schemes based on their powers in a way meant to give each of them their own distinct color from the primaries or secondaries
the best example of this is Li Na
Li Na is learning ballet, that’s her passion, and so her costume is, from the base, a ballet costume; with the top based in form off traditional Chinese dresses and the dragon horns also based off traditional Chinese dragon masks in shape
the scale pattern from the waist of the skirt, the diamond shape of the feathers on the mask, and the crystalline quality of the whole costume are all elements attatched to dragons
even the pale jade green color isn’t just because green is the color most associated with her brand of powers(knowledge magic) but also because dragons are made of precious stones and jade has some significance to Chinese culture
Anahera and Luis are at opposing ends of the spectrum of what has more influence on their costume
Anahera’s dress is based mostly off traditional Maori dresses - except the bustle, which is there to give her a more centaur-like figure
the fabric over her shoulder is taken directly from centaur fashion and her weapon(a long silk sash) is a traditional centaur weapon; even the star pattern all over her costume is taken from centaur culture
her costume is blue because that’s right next to green(she also has knowledge magic as her powers, just a different use of it) and it goes with the star theme
Luis’s costume, on the other hand, is heavily based on his identity as a Colombian, a Joropo(traditional Colombian dance) dancer, and a gnc gay boy
it takes the male and female costumes of the Joropo dance and melds them together - the basic pieces are the male’s but the top is extended to loosely resemble a dress, there are no sleeves, and all the pieces have frills; the collar is directly taken from the female Joropo costume
the only parts not taken entirely from there are the gloves and boots - which mostly resemble everyone else in the team’s gloves and boots as a unifying element between their costumes so they actually look like a team - and the circlet and lance, both of which are - in very different ways - representative of the horn of a unicorn (the lance is shaped like a unicorn horn and the circlet is exactly what unicorn’s horns turn into when they take human shape)
the costume is red, pink, and white in part because those are common colors for Joropo costumes, part because pink is often associated with gay men, part because white is often associated with unicorns, and part because red is the color matched to emotion magic
Rana and Liv are in the interesting position where their cultures are the ones I mostly based the magical beings they represent off of (at least in terms of clothing)
meaning Rana’s costume is simultaneously ancient Egyptian and fairy instead of a blending of elements from each - aside from the wings, which I believe are 100% fairy - and all of Liv’s costume is both Norse and dwarven
their colors are yellow and orange respectively because yellow-orange is the color of creation magic, which is what both their powers are branches of
Shayan’s magical being doesn’t actually exist in their world (the artifact his transformation comes from latched on to the rest of the team’s theme of magical beings and used one from Iranian culture so he’d match) so aside from his wings his costume is entirely based off ancient Iranian clothing; his colors are dark grey and silver because he’s not part of the original six
and then there’s Avery
the issue with Avery’s costumes is that #1 pixies don’t wear clothes - or really have any kind of culture beyond mischief - #2 Avery doesn’t have a deep connection to one culture like the others - their father is Canadian, their mother is Russian, and they grew up in Alaska, and #3 they have multiple transformations that all need to be just distinct enough that nobody figures out they’re all the same person - meaning multiple color schemes
so the colors and wings are each taken from one of the three races of pixie - pink, green, and white(pink pixies live in the cherry trees, white pixies in the mushrooms, and green everywhere else), and the shapes are elements taken from those races’ environments and mixed with human clothing
that’s why Pixie has a pink dress with cherry blossom sleeves and skirt, Imp has a white mushroom shaped costume, and Sprite’s in green shorts and crop top (the design was meant to mimic the shape of a tree-trunk - y’know, no random embellishments like a skirt or shawl or puff sleeves, just straight up)
what this leads to, unfortunately, is Avery’s costumes feeling more modern and less directly connected to their identity or the beings they represent than the rest of the team’s
also their color is supposed to be purple - it’s the only color left and also is the color of manipulation magic - but while the artifact that gives them their transformations is purple none of their transformations are so that makes it a little weird (I mean, like, green isn’t even close to purple like pink is, that’s what bothers me the most)

Van Cleef and Arpels brings to life Romeo and Juliet
Pair of brooches
In 1967, a chance meeting between the jeweler Claude Arpels and the Russian choreographer George Balanchine inspired a ballet called “Jewels.”
This year, for its new high jewelry collection, Van Cleef & Arpels has looked to a modern ballet directed by the Los Angeles-based, French choreographer and dancer, Benjamin Millepede.
While the initial inspiration for both was William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Van Cleef’s jewelry collection was unveiled on July 1 in Paris, but Millepied’s production - which mixes film with live stage performances - will premiere next spring.
“With this collection, we wanted to explore our classic patrimony of dance going back to Balanchine, and to inscribe ourselves in a contemporary creation with Benjamin Millepied,” said Nicolas Bos, president and chief executive of Van Cleef & Arpels at the unveiling of the Romeo and Juliet collection last week in Paris.
Matrimonio-necklace
Embracing culture has long been part of the vision that Bos, who started his career at Cartier’s art foundation, has brought to Van Cleef & Arpels.
“We have great admiration for art and artists, and believe that working with talents in creative fields different from ours can be a very enriching adventure,” Bos said. “Before we produce the first drawing of any thematic collection, we look at how others - artists or choreographers - have interpreted the same theme.”
Van Cleef’s love affair with dance started with its ballerina brooches in the 1940s, predating Balanchine’s famous ballet in three acts titled Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds. In more recent years, the jeweler has supported Millepied’s “Los Angeles Dance Project” company, helping him to produce a dance trilogy called “Gems.”
“When Benjamin told us he was working on a contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, it struck me as a creative opportunity for Van Cleef,” Bos said. “We realized that other creative minds were looking at the same theme.”
Reticella-necklace
The grace and movement that dance brings to jewelry inspired Van Cleef to design the 100 one-of-a-kind pieces in the Romeo and Juliet collection. The theme of love is another well-trodden terrain for Van Cleef whose most memorable pieces have been associated with famous romances, like the spectacular ruby and diamond necklace that the Duke of Windsor, then King Edward VIII, gave to Wallis Simpson before renouncing the throne of England, or the pearl and diamond set made for Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco.
The Maison had also explored the Shakespearean repertoire before, with a jewelry collection in 2003 called A Midsummer Night’s Dream. That inspiration had allowed Van Cleef to translate the poetic universe of what Bos called “le merveilleux,” into a delicately feminine collection filled with fairies, butterflies, birds in flight, and flowers swaying in the wind.
This time, it was love Italian-style that Van Cleef chose as the premise of its creations, while remaining faithful to the Italian Renaissance, the historical period that Shakespeare chose for his Romeo and Juliet. The jeweler’s version was, like Shakespeare’s, set in Verona against the background of an ancient family feud between the Montagues and the Capulets.
Drawing by Lorenzo Mattotti
The stage for Van Cleef’s version of Romeo and Juliet was set under the glass-domed courtyard of the Hôtel d’Évreux, by the Place Vendôme, transformed into a luxuriant Italian garden replete with olive trees and blooming bougainvillea. Its walls were lined with long panels of watercolor drawings by the Italian artist, Lorenzo Mattotti, stretched from floor to ceiling in shades of red, orange and violet, which traced the contours of the palazzo where Romeo serenaded Juliet.
“Mattotti is an artist I admire for his singularly sophisticated vision, and for his poetic universe that is futuristic and somewhat surrealistic,” Bos said. “I like his use of color that gave us a visual, graphic identity to link the Renaissance with the contemporary.”
Enveloping the space was the music of Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet that brought the jewelry presentation to life, and served as a score for a film projected in the back, showing intertwined dancers rehearsing passages from Millepied’s production of the same story.
“Storytelling has always been part of the narrative dimension of our Maison,” Bos said. “We wanted to tell this story with figurative pieces that represent the lovers and the balcony, but also with abstract ones to evoke the ambiance and architecture of Verona.”
Balcone Brooch
The charming “Balcone” brooch, dripping with the emeralds and garnets recalls the real balcony where Romeo and Juliet declared their love. Likewise, a bracelet representing the “castellated” ramparts of Verona, mystery-set with rubies – a setting technique perfected by Van Cleef in the 1930s – evokes architectural details of the medieval city. A pair of brooches representing the two lovers brings back the grace of the jeweler’s signature ballerinas; it also shows the evolution of the its style from another pair of Romeo and Juliet clips made in 1951, confirming Van Cleef’s long tradition of three-dimensional, figurative craftsmanship.
“The figurative pieces bring us back to reality in a literal way,” Bos said. “The abstract pieces establish a more subtle link with the story.”
The abstract pieces use both color and form to engage the viewer with the love story. Borrowing from the coat of arms of the two families, blue sapphires and lapis lazuli color the world of Romeo, while red spinels, orange sapphires, garnets, and rubies evoke the universe of Juliet. Colombian emeralds set on the “Lovers’ Path” bracelet hint at hope; their “forked” diamond-set path suggests the lovers’ tragic destiny.
Lovers' Path bracelet
Romeo and Juliet were briefly married. Shades of violet in the graduated setting of blue, purple and pink stones, blending together in the “Inamorato” bracelet, or in the “Matrimonio” necklace, symbolize the lovers’ union and that of their families.
Forms in this collection all borrow from Renaissance styles. A long dual-stranded sautoir evokes the pearl necklaces worn by Renaissance nobility, while the Reticella diamond choker recalls the ornamental lace collars from the same period. Historical context aside, dance is ever present in Van Cleef’s collection. It is inherent in the graceful rhythm of colors, the interplay of geometry with curves, the subtle contrast of materials, and the ease with which sautoirs can become short necklaces or bracelets. Still, despite the wealth of influences, there is no mistaking a signature style that is quintessentially that of Van Cleef & Arpels.
