Current list of Xiaoyao’s suitors (Ep. 27 mark):

Tushan Jing/Ye Shiqi: deeply insane about Xiaoyao, likes giving her stuff and listens to everything she says, extremely rich smart handsome and talented, genuinely sweet and kind, is actively courting her. Engaged to someone else and has so many personal issues that it’s just a mess honestly. (These personal issues could be overlooked for her if he’d just de-engage himself, but unfortunately he is locked in a gothic romance of a family so that’s not going very well.)

Xiang Liu/Fangfeng Bei: absurdly in love with Xiaoyao, takes her on fun dates, handsome intelligent and charming and has hella chemistry with her, encourages her hobbies (archery, food, poison), likes munching on snacks she makes him (poison). Extremely dangerous and temperamental, has physically and emotionally hurt Xiaoyao on multiple occasions, easily hurt by things Xiaoyao says or does unintentionally thus causing him to lash out, has yet to explain to her that he’s in love with her, and is Cang Xuan’s enemy one way or another. (Initial power dynamics aside, I can see how they’re pretty evenly matched now. Princess marries a crazy powerful demon general. They enjoy date nights and regular poisonings.)

Cang Xuan: would do many many many many MANY things for Xiaoyao and likes to brew wine. Is not remotely courting her because they are very firmly entrenched in a brother-sister relationship, is perfectly capable of tyrannical jealousy given leeway to act on it, also he’s very busy rn trying to become king. (The premise of this show is that CX is a suitor of XY’s but. I really don’t think he’s a love interest for her. He’s just a person she might spend her life with.)

Chishui Fenglong: allied with Cang Xuan, has yet to display any signs of mental illness, has never hurt Xiaoyao, has a normal relationship with his family, has a working brain, and thinks Xiaoyao is pretty and cool. Probably would be completely in over his head in a relationship with Xiaoyao, “is too much like Cang Xuan” according to the lady herself, not nearly as magnetic as the others. (He’s so so normal. Unfortunately, Xiaoyao has different taste.)

do you ever think about the wheel of time season two from elayne's perspective like: finally arrive at college!!! meet your neighbour in residence, accidentally microaggress against her, but you're totally gonna be buds! you brought too much dorm furniture so the RA says she's gonna beat you later, but you're like 'k, whatever, let's get drunk with my new bestie, college LYF!' turns out that same night your new BFF's BFF disappeared during a really intense exam, presumed dead. you decide to have a sleepover to console her, and get woken up by the totally-dead girl appearing out of nowhere, half naked, covered in blood, and crying. you're like 'okay so i'll just put these pillows away I guess?' then suddenly your friends are like 'brb we gotta go bail our friend out of jail' and you're like 'shit i'm coming too' and then your prof shows up and knocks you all out, and tries to sell you all into slavery? so you and your BFF's BFF escape, but your BFF gets captured, and you're trying to rescue her but BFFsBFF keeps giving major attitude, and then you run into a DIFFERENT prof from another department, who tries to help you out then immediately gets kidnapped as well. multiple people die. it's super intense. then you've got a great escape plan all figured out, except like three different groups of people invade the city, and you get SHOT, and then you eventually make it to help your BFF, only she's already freed herself??? and there's some kind of intense situation going on with your BFF's ex (presumed dead), your BFF's dirtbag highschool classmate, the guy who had a crush on your BFF, some random magic ghosts, and Satan's righthand man? so anyway you apply first aid and then your BFF's not-dead-i-guess ex nukes Satan's lieutenant, and there's this giant fireworks thing happening, and you think maybe your BFF's ex is the second coming of Jesus? he's cute tho so the fighting dies down, and you're trying very badly to process all that while still bleeding from your leg and then your aunt shows up?!?

What I did during my break:

I’m already out here bawling my eyes out over nika and paige (my favorite twins for lyf 🥺), i can’t even begin to imagine what state i’ll be in next year with paige and azzi. Like just imagining them having a historic duo typa season next year and then going on to win the natty and having to do their final presser together after that and getting asked how it feels to have finally gotten one season together will probably kill me ❤️‍🩹

If and when they have one of the greatest seasons from a duo that we’ve ever seen next year (shhh lemme ✨manifest✨ ok), it will be the most bittersweet thing ever. Like i will be the happiest person on earth because it’s the least they deserve after everything they’ve been through, but also the saddest knowing we only get it once (in college at least) and thinking of what could have been 😔

I did not need to think about this like I'm not emotionally ready for that actually. But it truly will be the most bittersweet thing ever though it will break me. 🥺

It is utterly and completely delightful how much the first ep can just be summed up as bitter business woman gets jealous of a pair of sheltered kids straight out of college. Like - lady! Personally, an adult woman with a career and a hot friend with benefits who is obsessing over two barely out of college kids like they owe her a blood debt because how dare they be cute and happy and wholesome has a whole bunch of screws loose.

I mean, if you have two naive youngsters PDAing all over the office, I can see how it can grate, but surely deciding you (a) want to bang the puppy and (b) asking your friend with benefits to seduce the girl is a bit much.

do you have any thoughts about what ricky and gina's future might look like post season 4 (the rest of the year, and then also through to the end of gina's senior year?) season 4 was so good and i love them and love where they left off, but i still wish we got more 😭

same, i don't wanna get my hopes up for a movie / spin-off but there's SO much potential for stories that are left to be told 😭

based on what tim said, i think the spring musical would've been the greatest showman with ricky & gina as anne & philip!! mourning the loss of rewrite the stars (rina's version) atm 😔 skdfjksd and with ricky's whole 'destiny as the next timothee hal chalamet' thing, i wouldn't be shocked if he was offered the role of romeo and took it, especially if it means he gets to spend more time with gina! i did think it was a big possibility that quinn was kind of forced into offering the role to him bc of how the lyf moment at the press conference would be viewed by outside parties, but when i rewatched 408, there was something that made me change my mind about that that i can't remember rn so. i'm not as solid on that anymore JSKJDS but um. yeah ricky & gina would be spending A LOT of time together between musical rehearsals and study dates, given gina's tutoring ricky and all + if ricky has a role in the movie in some capacity, there's that as well

despite his 'destiny as the next timmy chalamet', i do think ricky ultimately doesn't want to be in the spotlight and is fine leaving all that to gina, so i think after he graduates, he would settle more into a songwriting career and he would pursue music in college. he'll obviously be staying in slc for gina's senior year, but i could see him working towards transferring to a college in either la / nyc as soon as he can bc i fully expect gina to make that move. i wanna say gina would go to julliard but based on all of the mentions of hollywood this season and the emphasis on her being a movie star, i feel like she might be headed to la instead? but yeah, despite ricky & gina not going to the same school anymore for gina's senior year, we've seen how they both actively make efforts to spend time together, so, although there would be an inherent dent in that time together, i think they would have dates (study and romantic) galore skdjfks plus i could see ricky helping gina rehearse for whatever musicals miss jenn puts on for her senior year!! and also just throw in all of the headcanons that everyone has that we didn't get to see, i.e. ricky teaching gina how to play guitar & skate, gina teaching ricky how to knit, them baking together, falling down youtube rabbit holes, etc, etc :)

do you wanna talk about why wally (or any of your other Huge Faves) are so beloved to you

I honestly think a lot of it came from the fact that, at the time I made them, I really really related to them on a personal level

Wally was the first one, and he was just a design for Wally Franks from Bendy And The Ink Machine for a while. Kinda silly kinda stupid and everyone thinks he's always annoying and in the way, but he's a good kid! And he was fun to draw. So when I needed another filler character to round off a 10-character group, I just shoved him in there so I'd have a chance to draw him more.

But his personality in this environment suddenly gave him an all-new character and all at once he was the kid who came from a rough home, one that always wanted him to be smaller, out of the way, less of himself, but the one thing they couldn't take from him was his unending desire to be kind. Sure he has problems defending himself or setting boundaries or saying "no" in any scenario, but all of that comes from his desire to be kind to everyone he meets.

At the time I could really relate to that because I struggled with a lot of the same things, and as I've made more and more versions of him he's gotten a lot more confident than the original kid hiding scared behind his friends. He still has problems with setting boundaries, that's consistent, but he no longer has problems taking up space

I, on the other hand, am still working on that part 😳

I think the next big obsession was Lyf and the funny thing was? I didn't really care for them at first. They were just the narrator to my favorite Mechs album but they didn't really feel like a character to me.

Then I read Wayfarers

The concept was pretty simple: Lyf stumbles across Nastya post-Out and the two just. Travel together. But something about that made them click in my brain and suddenly I really really loved the concept behind their character.

Someone who was doomed from the start to be part of something they didn't understand, set up to lose everything and everyone they ever cared about, but who pushed through it all, survived, made a friend, and was thriving. There were setbacks, consequences of what set them on this path in the first place, but they had someone there with them who understood what they were going through and offered unending support.

I discovered the Mechs during March 2020. I'm sure you can see how I might have related to the concept of "my entire life is falling apart at the seams and nothing will ever be the same again but at least I can rely on the people around me"

I rediscovered them during my thesis year at college and became even more obsessed with Lyf, but this time in a slightly different way. I think the idea of graduating college was a whole new "my life is falling apart and will never be the same again", except this time I had a better idea about how rough it was going to be. The fans were always so kind in the tags of my silly notebook doodles, and looking forward to making and uploading those got me through a lot of really rough days at school. I wish I had the time to draw them more often.

It took me a really long time to connect with Finch, actually. At first I was even disappointed that I had to talk about them a lot solely for being the protagonist, because I found a lot of the side characters to be more compelling (Lorelai specifically for reasons I do not have time to get into).

And then I started writing the outline.

They're just a kid, man. They don't know what they're doing. The world is so big and they are so, so small. Everyone else seems to have a handle on things and for some reason refuses to tell them. No one is giving them the home-life support they need, and they have to figure it out themself, and everyone gets mad at them for getting it wrong.

And then suddenly I would protect them with my life

I saw a lot of myself in them all of a sudden when I realized just how lost and afraid they were to be navigating a world they didn't understand and no one seemed to be understanding how to help them in the first place. The fact that they were so young and childlike just meant that instead of relating to them, I wanted to protect them. It actually hurt to write a few of the scenes in Whisper Court because I wanted to go in there so bad and tell them they were loved, that they were fine existing the way they were, that there was nothing else they could have done.

I think it says a lot about me that these specific characters struck a chord with me and made me relate to them

But I think it says more about me that my instinct in every single one of these was to find a way to let them be happy and loved. Because maybe then I want myself to be happy and loved too
