Brinley smiled as she walked out the airport with her suitcase rolling behind her she walked across the street to the pick up area and walked faster seeing Quinn leaning against his car.

“Q!” Brinley smiled seeing her best friend, they quickly met in the middle hugging each other.

“B.” Quinn whispered smiled softly holding his best friend, “He’s going to be so excited.” Quinn smiled grabbing her suitcase before she could smirking at her eye roll.

“I’m excited!” Brinely had missed seeing the Hughes family less lately, especially since she doesn’t play with Quinn anymore and they went through quarantine so they couldn’t visit, but she also is very excited to surprise Luke as he didn’t think she could come to his draft day.

Quinn smiled having always been so grateful for how loving Brinley has always been with his family. He knew how much she missed her family especially during the program and the way she fit in like a sister in his family has always warmed his heart.

Quinn especially has been grateful for how much support Brinley has always been for his brothers but also for him, Quinn has always had a hard opening up and admitting when something was wrong but Brinley seemed to never have any issues with that with Quinn and Quinn appreciates that everyday.

Quinn pulled into the driveway of his parents house and shut the car, he grabbed her bag out of the car and they walked up to the front door, Quinn opened the door and heard Luke and Jack playing a board game in the living room and his parents talking on the couch in the living room.

Quinn set her bag down by the front door and gestured for her to stay and she nodded, he made sure his footsteps were a little loud to make his family notice him walking in.

“I thought you had to go get something?” Jack looked up at Quinn, looking confused as Quinn didn’t have anything in his hands.

“I did.” Quinn smiled mischievously, “You can come in.” Quinn called out getting confused looks from the four.

Brinley walked into the room making Luke jump up and almost tackle them both to the ground, “Brinny!” Luke held onto her tightly having been quite sad when she said she couldn’t make it to his draft.

“Hi Lu.” Brinely smiled hugging him tightly back before reluctantly letting go and turning to Jack who was waiting and opened up her arms and Jack smiled widely quickly lunging into her arms hugging her tightly.

“Hi Brin.” Jack whispered hugging her tightly.

“JJ!” Brinely smiled pulling back from the hug and lifted her hand ruffling Jacks hair making him groan and her laugh.

Luke waited until Jack and Brinley stopped hugging and stepped back right against her side even though he saw his parents stand up to say hi to her.

“Brinley.” Ellen smiled pulling her into a hug, Brinley smiled hugging her back and she turned to Jim and they nodded at each other with a smile and fist bumped.

“What are you doing here?” Luke questioned looking at Brinley.

“What and miss your draft day?” Brinely teased him softly booping his nose, she truthfully was busy on the draft day with an important meeting but she finally managed to get it switched so she come out here, which she was grateful for especially since she made it Quinn and Jack’s draft she didn’t want to miss Luke’s.

“Thank you.” Luke softy whispered to her, happy that one of his biggest role models will be there on his big day.

“Always Lukey.” Brinley whispered back, truthfully she loved Luke as another part of her family and he’s always had a fond spot in her heart.

Luke smiled before holding onto her arm and dragging her over to where Jack and Luke were playing a board game, “Your on my team Brinny.” Luke demanded with a puppy eyes towards her.

Brinely let out a laugh but nodded easily agreeing.

Jack groaned dramatically in protest, “No way! That’s like an automatic win for you!” Everyone knew how good Brinely was at board games and Luke always wanted to be teammates with Brinely.

“I’ll play on your team.” Quinn offered sitting down next to Jack.

Jack just groaned even more throwing his hands up, “That’s not gonna change anything Quinny.” Jack sassed at his big brother, Quinn just shook his head and rolled his eyes fondly at his little brother.

Brinely and Luke shared a laugh trying not to burst out in laughter.

And Jack was right. Brinley and Luke did end up winning ever game they played before they all called it quits to head up to bed.

Brinely got dressed into pajamas and laid down in the guest room that she use to live in when she lived with the Hughes family.

Brinley woke up the sun shinning in her eyes, she groaned covering her face. She heard her door being quietly opened and then shut, she felt some sit down on her bed and lay down next to her, she felt a head of curls lay against her chest and knew exactly who it was, Brinely hand started playing with his curls.

Brinely remembered the days she lived with the Hughes and many times Luke would sneak into her room and lay next to her, a lot of the times he was anxious over something and couldn’t sleep so he came and cuddled with his favorite person.

Luke took a deep breath feeling himself relaxed as he cuddled against Brinely.

Brinley just continued to play with his curls feeling Luke seem to relax more and more, She knew he was anxious as she’s known him for the last five years and she knows very well his anxious ticks.

Luke hid his face against her shoulder, “What if i don’t go high.” Luke mumbled nervously, been worried for a while if he didn’t go high like his brothers and how everyone is expecting him to go.

“Than you don’t.” Brinely blunted told him, “But you’re going to because you are an amazing hockey player Luke and any team is going to be very lucky to have you.” Brinely knew how much of an amazing player Luke was and felt bad that he was injured for big portion of his draft year making him not be able to really fight for the number one pick.

“Thank you.” Luke breathed out honestly just needing someone to reassure him and it always calmed him down better when Brinley was the one.

“Now go to sleep we have a few hours.” Brinely ruffled his hair seeing its barely six am and that’s way to early for either of them to be up.

“Good idea.” Luke mumbled half asleep.

Nick Suzuki knocked on her front door, Brinley stood up from the couch wrapping her cardigan tighter around her as she walked to the front door and opened the door seeing one of her best friends she smiled moving to the side letting him in.

Nick headed to the living room setting the takeout and wine on the coffee table as Brinley walked into the kitchen grabbing two wine glasses and walked back to the living room, she sat down on the couch next to Nick grabbing the fluffy blanket throwing it over both of them.

Brinely started opening the wine as Nick took out all the takeout boxes, Brinely poured both of them a large class of wine before getting her chopsticks and starting to eat some of the takeout.

The two have started this tradition a few years ago to just unwind and have a cheat meal and some wine, sometimes they end up gossiping the whole or watching a show but it is always very relaxing for the two to spend time together, and when Nick’s girlfriend Catherine is free she always comes too making the night even better.

The two finished eating the food eventually and was sitting in peaceful silence drinking their wine.

“You do know Cole has feelings for you right.” Nick suddenly asked out of nowhere.

Brinely choked on her wine coughing, “Jeez Nicky warn a girl would you?” Brinely coughed again catching her breath, Nick snickered slighty, “What do you mean has feelings.” Brinely looked over at Nick in pure puzzlement.

“You don’t know?” Nick looked at her shocked, Cole was obviously the whole team knew of his little crush within a few days and it didn’t help he loved to follow her around like a puppy and looked up at her with stars in his eyes.

“He doesn’t have feelings for me Nicky.” Brinely scoffed knowing there is no way Cole has feelings for her, “Besides i’m his Captain now i’m supposed to be guiding him, mentoring him not thinking if he might have feelings for me.”

Nick raised an eyebrow, “So you have no feelings for him?” Nick had a good feeling the two would be more in the future.

“He’s young Nick. He needs a friend.” Brinely sternly spoke not noticing she never answered the question but Nick did, he decided to let it go with a nod but would remember that for later.

Jack, Cole, Matt, Trevor and Alex were all walking about the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Arena before they had a practice in an hour.

They walked over to where Quinn was sitting with Luke on the bleachers helping Luke with his homework.

“Algebra already!” Jack dramatically spoke as he looked at Luke’s work, remembering just doing Algebra like a year ago and Luke’s only fourteen.

“Some of us are actually smart.” Luke sassed back with a little smirk, Luke being the one out of the brothers to really excel in academics.

“Brat.” Jack flicked Luke on the head sitting on the bleachers behind Luke with his friends.

Brinley Matthews walked into the Arena coming back for her first day after summer break, luckily getting to have a little bit longer of a break as she didn’t have to go thought a development camp as she did her first year.

Her parents came out for a few days to get her settled and then they would head back home, she was gonna move her stuff into the Hughes house tonight knowing they are also housing one of Jack’s friends, Alex.

Luke looked up hearing someone set their bag on the bleachers in front of him and looked up seeing a girl on her phone and he smiled quickly realizing who it is, “Brinny!!” Luke happily got up and stepping down the few rows tackling Brinley into a hug.

“Hey Kiddo!” Brinley smiled happily hugging him back, “Are you getting taller!” she playfully ruffled his curls as they pulled back from the hug but Luke stayed curled against her side.

Luke was easily the most excited for having Brinley live with them for almost a year.

“Q!” Brinley smiled wrapping her arm around Luke letting him cuddle into her side, she truthfully has absolutely adored him from the second she met Luke over a year ago and had missed him over the summer.

“Hey B!” Quinn got up and walked over giving his best friend a side hug letting his little brother stay on her side.

“Brin!” Jack grinned and hurried down the bleachers quickly hugging her, Jack really grew close to Brinley and has enjoyed having a sister figure in his life.

“Hey JJ.” Brinley hugged back one of her favorite boys. What Brinley didn’t know yet was Jack has never let anyone ever call him JJ because he hated the nickname but for some reason he didn’t care if Brinley did.

“Gonna introduce me to your friends.” Brinley messed with Jack’s hair.

“Brin! Not the hair.” Jack dramatically groaned quickly trying to fix it in case a girl was nearby.

Quinn and Brinley shared a fond look trying not to laugh at Jack’s dramatics.

“Alright, That’s Alex, Matt, Trevor, and Cole.” Jack finished fixing his hair before he started introduced his friends, feeling weird saying their actual names and not their nicknames.

Alex waves softy, Matt sent her a smile, and Trevor pulled out his famous smirk, “Hi.”

Brinley only raised an eyebrow at the flirtatious boy and turned to Cole who hadn’t said anything yet, she saw him staring at her with sparkles in his eyes and she his lips parted before Trevor elbowed him into his side.

“Hey.” Cole mumbled shyly looking away from her reluctantly as his whole face heated up and he could hear his heartbeat in his ears as he met Brinley. Cole knew Brinley Matthews was beautiful but seeing her in person no picture does her justice.

“Alright be good.” Quinn gave a playful stern look to Jack before grabbing Luke’s stuff and walking away to his practice.

Brinley gave a wave to the boys before walking away with Luke following right behind Quinn heading to their practice.

It was silent for a moment before the boys looked at each other and just started cracking up, Cole sat there blushing like crazy as his friends all were cackling at him.

“Alright, Alright enough .” Cole kicked Jack and Matt as the four slowly calmed down.

“Heyyyy.” Jack teasingly mimicking Cole with a smirk on his face.

“Shut up.” Cole mumbled back.

July 24, 2022

Quinn and Luke came out for a week to Brinley’s house in Arizona and sadly Jack was busy and couldn’t make it so it was just Luke and Quinn.

Luke was still sleeping even thought it was already noon. Quinn and Brinley were lying out by the pool getting some sun and enjoying the comfortable silence.

Quinn had his eyes closed as he felt the warmth of the sun in his face and felt like it was good time to bring it up, “So when are going to let Cole take you on a date.”

Brinley choked on literally air as she shot up and looked at Quinn incredulously, “What?” Brinley asked nervously.

“B your my best friend, did you not think i wouldn’t notice your feelings.” Quinn didn’t even open his eyes but knew she was staring at him, Quinn also knew that Brinley didn’t want to have feelings for Cole and has tried to hide it and get rid of them.

“Doesn’t matter they will go away.” Brinley avoided the question and sounded like she was trying to convince herself of her words.

“And if they don’t?” Quinn gently prodded.

“Then i’ll keep ignoring them.” Brinley stated as she looked away from Quinn.

Quinn shook his head and sat up looking at his best friend, “B it is okay to like Cole. You can have a relationship with him and not mess up your team or get distracted.” Quinn knew that Brinley has always been worried that a relationship would make her distracted from hockey or she would hurt the person because of how much hockey is her life.

“What if i mess it up.“ Brinley whispered looking at her hands, she was worried when she first thought of Cole more than platonic that if she messed it up she would mess things up with Jack and the Hughes family, and then mess up her team chemistry.

“You won’t.” Quinn sternly spoke looking absolutely certain, “You deserve to be happy and i know Cole makes you happy.” Quinn has hated how much Brinley has made herself suffer over having feelings for Cole.

Brinley slowly nodded her head, “Maybe.” Brinley needed some time alone to think over Quinn’s words.

“Just think about B, i want you to be happy.” Quinn reached over squeezing her hand gently and made her look up at him, he sent her a soft smile before there was sudden footsteps and they were splashed with water as Luke jumped into the pool.

Luke came out of the water pushing his hair out of his face he looked at them with a cheekily grin, “Morning!”

Quinn and Brinley shared a fond eye roll letting out laughs.

Brinley was resting on her couch working on a new scarf when she heard a knock on her front door, she set down her scarf and crochet needles heading to the door she opened the door not surprised to see Cole standing there.

Every since Cole had joined the team he has come over and visited her many times and usually gives her some random excuse why he was at her front door but Brinley never bought any of them but she let him think she did.

“Yes Cole?” Brinely questioned wrapping her cardigan tighter around her as she leaned against her front door.

Cole stop there frozen just staring at her in awe, Brinley raised an eyebrow confused, “Cole?”

Cole snapped out of his trance blinking rapidly, “You have curls?” Cole thought she couldn’t have gotten anymore beautiful but he was wrong, her curls make her look even more gorgeous.

Brinely forgot her natural hair was out for once, since she was getting her straightening treatment again tomorrow. She’s gotten her hair professionally straightened for many years now and it lasts around six months for her so she doesn’t have to worry about trying to hid her hair during that time, she usually only has her hair naturally two days a year and that’s before her treatments.

“I do, i know they look terrible.” Brinley shook her head knowing how terrible her curls look on her.

Cole’s jaw drop in shock, “Terrible! Meels they look so beautiful on you.” Cole trailed off just staring at her in awe. Cole being the only person to ever call her Meels after her middle name Amelia.

Brinley eyes widen and she felt her whole body flush, she’s never had someone besides her family said her curls look good on her.

“They do?” Brinley soflty asked, softer than she usually ever lets herself be around anyone.

Cole felt his face soften hearing the uncertainty in her voice and the hopeful spark in her eyes, “They are absolutely beautiful. You look beautiful with your curls.” Cole smiled softly enjoying that he’s able to see a little bit of a softer side of Brinley.

Brinely felt her heart skip a beat and she cursed in her head for Cole snd his stupidly good charm, she shook her head trying not to think about how her cheeks are flushed and her heart skipped in her chest.


Cole felt his heart beat hopefully seeing the red on her cheeks and he smiled seeing her look flustered and softer.

The whole team was out celebrating the game they just played against the Florida Panthers winning 10-2, Cole getting a hat trick and Brinley getting a hat trick and two assist. It was the last game the Canadians were playing for the season.

Brinley sat next to Nick and his long time girlfriend Caitlin in the booth in the corner of the bar. Most of the team was out dancing out on the dance floor, some scattered around flirting with girls, Brinely saw a four or five of the boys around a table taking shots and she wasn’t surprised to see Cole keep going back to the table to take more shots and then hurrying back to the dance floor.

Cole is usually the one to party the most on the team and many times Brinley has had to bring him home and get him into his bed.

Brinley put down her empty glass that was just a sofa as she likes to be completely when she goes out with her team so she can be a safe driver home for any of them and she isn’t the biggest on alcohol besides some wine here or there.

The team had been out for already a few hours way past midnight already and Brinley knew sooner than later the bar would be closing.

Brinley flinched slightly feeling a body fall on to her, she looked down seeing the remarkable color of Cole’s hair and relaxed slightly but still tense with Cole laying on top of her.

Cole’s face was buried into her stomach and drunkenly mumbling.

“Let’s get you home.” Brinley mumbled softly to a very drunk Cole and started to get up off the bench with Cole.

Nick and Caitlin shared a look both of them very close to Brinley and they could tell she felt more for Cole than she wanted to let on or even admit to herself, everyone already knew of Cole’s feelings for Brinley, even their coach knew how he felt for her.

Everyone assumed because Brinley never made a move or accepted anything from Cole, that she didn’t feel the same and was trying to let him off softly.

But a few knew that Brinley did feel something more for Cole, but knew she was scared of admitting that. Nick knew especially it was because of her captaincy and not wanting to affect Cole or the team.

Nick has seen how hard Brinley tries to keep a distance from Cole and be just platonic towards him but Nick also knew how stubborn Cole is and knew how persistent Cole can be and the second Cole got any hint that Brinley might feel the same for him he won’t give up.

Brinley softly helped Cole stand up and wrapped his arm around her neck helping him stand, she waved at Nick and Caitlin before heading out of the bar and to her car.

Brinley unlocked her car and opened the passenger door helping Cole in, she leaned over him buckling the seatbelt, she looked up seeing Cole watching her a soft look on his face, he reached his hand out towards her slowly.

“My pretty Meels.” Cole whispered softly gingerly stroking his fingers across her cheekbone and tucking her hair behind her ears.

Brinley froze slightly at his touch and words but shook it off and backed up letting his hand fall from her face she closed the door and walked around to the drivers seat.

She started the drive to Cole’s apartment. Brinley tried to ignore how she knew Cole’s eyes were on her the whole time she was driving them.

Brinley pulled into the parking spot shutting the car and hoping out, she opened the passenger door helping Cole out.

Brinley walked them up to his apartment, she put her hand into his pocket and grabbed his keys opening his door, she dropped his keys in the bowl by the front door and led him to his bedroom.

She pulled the coverts back and gently lowered him onto his bed and luckily for her he was wearing clothes he could comfortably sleep in and she didn’t have to worry about changing him. Brinley untied his shoes and slipped them off as well as his socks as she knows Cole hates sleeping with socks on.

Brinley walked out of the bedroom to the kitchen grabbing medicine and a glass of water and a bucket just in case.

Brinley headed back to his bedroom setting the bucket on the floor next to his bed and the medicine and water on his bedside table.

She walked around the bed shutting the curtains all the way so he didn’t wake up because of the light and she walked back grabbing his phone from his pocket and plugged it in and set it on his nightstand.

She gave him one more look seeing Cole started to fall asleep, she turned around before feeling his hand gently grab onto her wrist and she turned back around seeing him sleepy stare up at her.

“Stay please.” Cole whispered half asleep and very drunk looking up at her with glossy puppy eyes.

“You’re drunk.” Brinley hated how her heart skipped at the sight of him but shook her head knowing he was drunk.

“Not that drunk.” Cole pouted at her, “Why don’t you like me?” Cole slurred his words still looking like a kicked puppy.

“What! Of course i like you Cole.” Brinley looked baffled that Cole thought she didn’t like him and rushed her words out quickly.

“Yeah but you don’t like like me.” Cole pouted more as he whispered to her.

“You’re drunk.” Brinley ignored his words bending down and brushing his hair out of his eyes.

“No i’m not drunk,” Cole pouted but happily leaned into her soft touch, “You won’t date me.” Cole still pouted.

“You’re my teammate and i’m your captain.” Brinley sternly told him, sounding like she had said that sentence many times.

“So, i just want you.” Cole sassed and looked at her with hopeful eyes, “I just want you Meels.” Cole repeated softly as his eyes slowly started to flutter shut.

“I want you too.” Brinley mumbled softly admitting her feelings once she thought he felt asleep and she pressed a soft kiss to his forehead before standing up and walking out the door.

Cole’s eyes fluttered opened slighty watching her walk out of his room.
