I'm in the library today working on my last ever essay for this degree. In the distance, just above tree line, is Twyford Down, the start of the South Downs in the west. For three years I've been on this campus looking over at the Downs and they never fail to make me feel happy to be where I am.

Flowers, Christopher Wood, 1930

Seen last week at The Hepworth, Wakefield. I love Christopher Wood’s paintings. I feel something like a kinship with him when I see his paintings of flowers and read his letters. He sent this to his mother when she sent him flowers in Paris:

Thank you so much for thinking of me and sending me these flowers. Nothing, I say nothing because I mean nothing, has given me such pleasure as they did arriving as the did and when they did. Only you could have packed them so well and in such a way that they would arrive fresher than they left.

And from another letter to his mother about still life:

Flowers give me more pleasure than anything and still life is the thing I like painting the best. I feel so much for still life, although perhaps it’s the thing that appeals least to the public.

This particular painting is oil on board, a medium I love and love to paint myself.

I saw the Paul Nash exhibition at the Tate Britain today with C. This wasn’t actually in the exhibition but one of the things that struck me was how varied Nash’s clouds are and how much care and attention he puts into the sky. 

There are surreal, square altostratus, there are brooding, pink and blue cumulonimbus, there are light, white cumulus  and there are the rhythmic, mackerel skies of cirrus.
