WARD’S HOT DONUTS. Myth Busters 101, Marshall University, Huntington WV. Ward’s Donuts was a dinky decrepit old Mom & Pop donut shop on 4th Ave., near Old Main, but about 2 blocks off of the MU campus. They had a really cool neon donut-shaped sign that read WARD’S around the top, DONUTS around the bottom, and HOT in the donut ‘hole’. Like all donut shops with a ‘HOT’ sign, HOT meant that freshly made donuts were available hot from the oven.  The urban legend that circulated in the Marshall freshman dorms every Fall was that when the ‘HOT’ sign was lit up in red, that signified that there were teen-age hookers from Huntington High working in the cabins out back of the donut shop. The legend had it that when the light was red, you had to go inside, and ask for ‘the special’; whereupon you’d be shown to the cabins.  One night on a cheap-ass beer buzz, probably Wiedemann, two of us went to check it out. When we got inside, there were people smoking and drinking coffee and eating donuts. Duh. My friend and I were asked if we needed help. We got cold feet and said we were still trying to decide what we wanted. We had been standing in there for what seemed like an eternity before the guy behind the counter asked us a second time, but with a little ooomph in it, if we needed anything. When we replied that we were still undecided, the man said: “Look boys, this is a donut shop, we ain’t sellin’ no pussy out back, we sell donuts. Do y’all want donuts ?”
