1930, crisis & Woods…
A History Lesson.
Disclaimer: Sorry if the tone of this post is too blunt, raw, etc. I cried while writing this, but I couldn’t help it. I really wanted to write this because my curiosity and love for history mixed with one of the characters I care about most and his context. And yes, it brought out a lot of things from within me that I didn’t even know I had.
Although I had learned and read about this event since I was a child—something often mentioned in my country as a constant reminder of what to avoid—studying it as a child, as a teenager, and now revisiting it through a particular character (or several) is completely different...
Please don’t take this personally, beautiful person <3. Here, we’re only seeking informative purposes in this post.
So, read it at your own discretion because this is going to start off strong.
Tumblr media
I feel like NO ONE is taking into account the HISTORICAL CONTEXT of ALL the Black Ops characters (Not necessarily here, but in different media).... Adler was born in 1937... Weaver in 1936... Woods in 1930...
Damn, even the official wiki states that Woods was born in 1937 in Pennsylvania and that as a child, he ran away from home and wandered the streets until he joined the military at 18, or maybe even earlier. It wouldn’t surprise me if he lied about his age to enlist sooner because WE’RE TALKING ABOUT FRANK WOODS BEING BORN DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF 1930!!!!
“Frank Woods was born on March 20, 1930, and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He ran away from home as a young child, forced to rely on street smarts and his instincts. Woods quickly learned to be completely independent.” Text quoted from the wiki.
Did no one read about how families literally had NO FOOD to feed their children???? Did no one read about how families SOLD their children to avoid having so many mouths to feed? Was I the only one who saw those photos??? Where mothers cried and covered their faces IN SHAME for having to SELL their CHILDREN who weren’t even 5 years old. Well, in EXACTLY THAT CONTEXT, Frank Woods was born and raised…
Tumblr media
I think many people aren’t considering, or aren’t taking into account, the historical and social context in which these characters grew up. They’re judging them with a 2025 mindset, without stopping to think about what it meant to live in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Tumblr media
“In the coal fields of Pennsylvania, three or four families crowded into single-room shacks and survived on wild herbs. In Arkansas, families were found living in caves. In Oakland, California, entire families lived in sewer pipes.” Woods was born in the midst of the Great Depression (1930), a period of brutal extreme poverty. Families literally starved to death, and many sold or abandoned their children because they couldn’t support them. The fact that Woods lived on the streets from a young age makes sense in this context. He likely never had a real family, and that explains his personality: aggressive, independent, with a survivor’s mentality. Enlisting in the military at 18 (or earlier, lying about his age) is completely logical for someone with his background.
“More than 200,000 vagrant children roamed the country as a result of the disintegration of their families.” And Woods was one of them.
Tumblr media
Adler and Weaver, on the other hand, were born in the midst of World War II (1936 and 1937). This means their early years were marked by a world entirely at war, with resource shortages, constant fear, and an uncertain future. Weaver wasn’t even born in the U.S., but in the Soviet Union, which endured HORRORS during the war. And let’s not forget that his childhood wasn’t just shaped by the war, but also by Stalin’s dictatorship, which brought repression, purges, and fear even within families themselves. Most players have no idea about the real historical context, and I DON’T blame anyone for not knowing, because these are character details that don’t affect or influence the plot. But for me, at least, I don’t like to overlook them. Some see the characters as "action heroes" and not as men who grew up in brutal contexts that shaped their worldview. They don’t ask what it means to have been born in 1930, 1936, or 1937. They don’t think about how war, poverty, dictatorship, and the Cold War affected their mentalities. And the worst part is that they judge them with today’s mindset. Of course, in 2025, we think differently about relationships, trauma, and life. But in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, when these characters grew up and lived their youth, the mentality was completely different. You can’t expect them to think or act like someone born in 2000 or 2010 would.

So, getting back to the topic…

✨Express history lesson with the Black Ops crew✨
1930s: THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND SURVIVAL (1929-1939) When Woods was born in 1930, the U.S. was in its worst economic crisis in history: the Great Depression. The Wall Street stock market had collapsed in 1929, and millions of people were left without jobs or homes. Values and mindset of the 1930s in the U.S.:
Survival at all costs: There was no time to think about emotions or trauma; the priority was getting food. People hardened because they couldn’t afford to be vulnerable.
Extreme self-reliance: The government didn’t help much, so everyone had to find a way to survive on their own. If you starved, it was your problem.
Strong machismo: Women didn’t have real labor rights, and their role was to "take care of the home." If a man couldn’t provide for his family, he was seen as a failure.
Extreme racism: Racial segregation was the norm. Black and white people couldn’t share bathrooms, restaurants, or public transportation.
Tumblr media
Impact on Woods:
He grew up on the streets, without a stable family or protection. He learned from a young age that no one was going to help him and that he had to be strong on his own.
He most likely experienced extreme hunger and violence. He became a natural fighter out of necessity.
"Tough guy" mentality: Back then, expressing emotions was seen as weakness. Woods learned that to survive, he had to be aggressive and self-reliant.
1940s: WORLD WAR II AND PATRIOTISM (1939-1945) When Adler and Weaver were born (1936 and 1937), the world was at war. The U.S. entered World War II in 1941, and society changed dramatically. Values and mindset of the 1940s:
Hyper-patriotism: The war made sacrifice for the country the most important thing. Men were pressured to enlist.
Strict gender roles: Men went to war; women stayed home or worked in factories to support the war effort.
Paranoia and espionage: The war created constant fear of the "enemy," especially after the U.S. discovered concentration camps in Germany and later dropped atomic bombs.
Children grew up fast: There was no normal childhood. Kids saw their parents go to war, heard news of bombings, and learned that the world was a cruel place.
Impact on Adler and Weaver:
They learned that violence was normal. From a young age, they grew up seeing soldiers and weapons everywhere.
The enemy was real. Adler, growing up in the U.S., absorbed from childhood that Nazis, Soviets, and Japanese were "the enemy."
Weaver, on the other hand, was born in the USSR and lived under a dictatorship. As a Soviet, he grew up in a world where anyone could betray you, where the KGB spied on its own people, and where a simple rumor could send you to a labor camp in Siberia.
1950s: COLD WAR (1945-1959) After World War II, the USSR and the U.S. entered the Cold War, a power struggle between communism and capitalism. People lived with constant paranoia, fear of nuclear war, and hatred between the U.S. and the USSR. Values and mindset of the 1950s:
Structural racism: Racial segregation still existed in the U.S. (separate bathrooms and restaurants for Black and white people).
Political paranoia: People were afraid of being accused of being communists. Being a communist could ruin your life.
Fixation on the "perfect family": Television and advertising portrayed the American dream as getting married, having kids, and living in a house with a yard.
Impact on Adler and Weaver:
Weaver, who emigrated to the U.S. during this time, likely faced a lot of racism and discrimination. He was seen as a "Russian communist," even if he wasn’t.
Adler, raised in the U.S., grew up with the mindset that communism was "the great enemy."
Work was everything. The CIA, the military, or the war were more important than any personal relationships.
As a small personal note, I’d say this is where we can clearly see the power of propaganda over the general population in a society and how fear intensifies everything.
Tumblr media
1960s: VIETNAM WAR AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE By this time, our characters were adults and starting to work as soldiers or agents. Values and mindset of the 1960s:
Vietnam War: The U.S. sent thousands of young men to fight in Vietnam. This traumatized an entire generation.
Distrust in the government: Corruption scandals and the assassination of JFK made many stop believing in institutions.
Impact on Woods, Adler, and Weaver:
They were sent to war. They experienced brutal things and had to kill without question.
Adler and Woods saw the brutality of war and understood that the government lies.
Tumblr media
1970s and 1980s: EXTREME COLD WAR AND TOTAL CYNICISM By this time, our guys were veterans and had seen it all. They no longer trusted anything or anyone. Values and mindset of the 70s-80s:
Total cynicism: People realized that governments lie and manipulate.
Emotional detachment: No one wanted to form lasting relationships because life was uncertain.
Appearance of success: The 80s glorified money, image, and power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Impact on our characters:
Adler and Weaver, as CIA agents, learned that everything was a game of betrayals.
Woods became even more skeptical and hardened.
Adler focused more on his career and left any personal life behind.
Conclusion: You can’t judge them with a modern mindset These characters didn’t grow up in a world of social media, equality, and therapy. They grew up in a world of war, hunger, and betrayal. Their values were shaped by these events, and what seems "normal" to us today wasn’t for them. That’s why Adler might be distant with women, Weaver might be a womanizer, and Woods is aggressive. It’s not because they’re "bad," but because that’s how life was in their era, and according to these contexts, I consider possibilities—more or less realistic—based on everything they lived through and absorbed in their early years.
I’m not saying we should justify their actions, but understanding their context helps us see them as more than just action characters. Adler, Woods, Mason, Hudson, Weaver—ALL of them belong to the Silent Generation (people born between 1928 and 1945). The term was first used in 1951 in an article by the American magazine Time, and it stems from their supposed reluctance to express their political opinions. Some attribute this attitude to the fact that, as young adults, these individuals grew up during McCarthyism, in a climate of surveillance and persecution of dissent in the United States and much of the Western world.
When the Silent Generation began to mature after World War II, they faced a devastated social order, within which they would spend their early adulthood, and they found a new enemy in communism through the betrayal of postwar agreements and the rise of the Soviet Bloc. Unlike the previous generation, which had fought to "change the system," the Silent Generation sought to work within the system. They did so by keeping their heads down and working hard, thus earning the label of "silent." This fits perfectly with our Black Ops crew, as it reflects everything they had to live through and, in part, what we witness in their stories.
As a final detail, I want to dedicate this, especially the part about Woods, to a particular friend, because, as he once told me, "I’ve known Woods for 15 years," since he’s his favorite character, and I know he would love this, given all the years he’s been playing this incredible saga.

minors do not interact, please! — russell adler …
kisses everywhere but where he’s supposed to :( he’s meant to be going down on you, forehead against your bare skin as his lips press your stomach, shuffling his body and head lower. he’ll stop right as his thumbs hook into your panties, barely looking up at you as he adjusts, planting more kisses along your torso. he’s fucking with you, obviously. his arm would hook under your left thigh, finger drawing shapes of nothing onto warm skin. you’d cry, beg him to stop being mean but he wouldn’t listen.
taking your left leg with him as he sat up on his knees, adler would rest it on his shoulder before kissing the side of your own knee and linger for what felt like eternity, pursed lips impossibly cruel. when you whined as a complaint, he would start kissing his way back down only to, of course, stop when he got even remotely close to where his mouth was supposed to be. he’d do it once more, following a near identical path while his hand rested on your stomach, still drawing those same meaningless shapes.
he’d hold eye contact with you but that made it more embarrassing for you as he slid his hand from your stomach to your right thigh before pushing his thumb into your panties but to still do nothing, leaving you on edge. switching legs, adler would drop wet kisses from your knee down and stop when he felt the edge of your cotton panties on his cheek. fucking bastard.

"We're counting on you, Bell." 🔔
Tumblr media
After days of work, back and neck pain, and effort, I finally finished this art! ಥ‿ಥ
I had this idea of drawing my Bell, along with Russell Adler and Helen Park (for the first time, surprisingly) a while ago, so I was determined to finish this piece in no time, and here we are!
Let me know what you think about it, hehe! My neck needs a break, ouch—
Beneath the cut is the process of this drawing, from sketch to final! ↓

The ideal woman for Russell Adler
I remember being asked this: “What kind of person would be the perfect lover for a man like Adler?”
Tumblr media
And I replied: "Short answer: Me, lol. Jokes aside, I might be guilty of using myself as a reference here, but definitely not just any woman is for Adler—I think we all agree on that. First, I’d say that at 54, age is probably the last thing he’d care about. Whether you’re 20, 30, 40, or whatever age (as long as you’re an adult), I don’t see him caring much. What he would care about is how intelligent you are, whether you can keep up with his pace and lifestyle, because he’s going to expect you to adapt to his life, not the other way around, since he’s a workaholic. I’ve known men similar to Adler—I can even compare him to my dad in many ways, like both being ENTJs—and I can definitely tell you it’s a very complicated personality type in the MBTI. Luckily, I’m an INTJ, and over the years, I’ve learned to understand this type of personality. Someone like Adler wouldn’t want someone incompetent, dependent, or inept by his side. He doesn’t want someone who becomes a burden or someone he constantly has to protect. Adler would want a lover who energizes him, someone who fills him with energy, especially now that age might be weighing on him. He’d also want a girl who isn’t submissive, who doesn’t say yes to everything, who challenges him but also lets herself be dominated.
Adler’s personality is one that solves problems before they start. He won’t order for you at a restaurant, but he’s someone who’ll make decisions for you, believing he knows what’s best for you, often without telling you. So it’ll be a constant push and pull, which can be exhausting for many. Adler isn’t someone who’ll make unnecessary scenes, so he’ll look for someone who doesn’t create drama or scenes. No one insecure or immature. She’d have to be independent, maybe even a loner like him, since she’d need her own life because Adler hardly spends any time at home. He’d probably want a lover willing to learn, especially if you’re much younger than him or your job isn’t being a CIA black ops agent. I know he’d love it if his lover asked him to teach them things like shooting and reloading a gun, boxing, self-defense, and even if you went for a drive, he’d probably explain how to evade a car during a chase—that would be his way of saying “I love you.” The girl would have to be very perceptive because Adler won’t say “I love you,” but you’ll see it in how he cares for you—gifts, advice, shared activities, maybe even related to his work, etc. He’s more demonstrative, so he’d value a girl who doesn’t constantly ask him to say how much he loves her.
That’s why, within the MBTI, one of the best compatibilities is ENTJ and INTJ. They’re basically the same, but Adler being extroverted (ENTJ) and me, for example, being introverted (INTJ), makes it so that in social situations where I don’t feel like interacting, Adler would take over the conversation without me having to say anything, which complements me by taking a weight off my shoulders. But I understand that many people might not like this, and that’s understandable. Especially in the long term, I wonder if someone who meets all the characteristics I mentioned would still stay with someone like Adler.
Being so intelligent, you’d have to ask yourself if you want to be with someone as dangerous and unstable as him, given his life, work, and emotional scars, or if you’d prefer someone more stable and reliable than Adler, since it’s very likely he’d be distrustful even with his lover or worry that something might happen to them because of him. He’d care deeply about his lover’s safety and self-confidence above all else. It’s a bit long, but I wanted to expand as much as I could (and even then, I know I’ve missed things).
As you can see, this point is very extensive because Adler is complex, and a profile like his requires it."
And…the truth is I would like to go a little deeper into the subject. So…
Characteristics of the ideal woman according to Russell Adler
Tumblr media
1- Intelligent, sharp, and quick-witted Not just to hold a conversation with him, but because Adler has no patience for mediocrity. He wants someone who understands things quickly, who doesn’t need everything explained in detail. He likes someone who can grasp the situation without needing many words. In other words, she must be intuitive, someone who can anticipate him, just as he anticipates others. Someone who can surprise him.
Not just any woman can be with Adler. He needs someone clever, capable of keeping up with his pace and anticipating his moves. Intelligence isn’t just measured in knowledge but in the ability to read between the lines, interpret nonverbal cues, and understand his way of thinking. It’s not enough to be clever or intelligent in an academic sense. To stand by Adler’s side, you need strategic intelligence—the ability to read people, anticipate moves, and recognize when he’s manipulating or testing boundaries. He doesn’t respect those who are easy to read or predictable; if he perceives weakness in someone’s mind, he’ll exploit it without hesitation. A woman with ironclad self-control, who doesn’t crumble under his tests, who understands his games without reacting impulsively, will earn his respect.
2- Independent, but not distant He’s not looking for someone who depends on him. He doesn’t want burdens. He wants a woman who has her own life, who doesn’t need him to be happy but still chooses him. But—and this is important—he also wouldn’t want someone who makes him feel completely dispensable. Adler is a man who needs to feel that his presence matters, that he’s useful in your life in some way. A woman who never asks for his help or advice might make him feel like he has no role in her life, and that would make him lose interest.
He doesn’t want someone who depends on him for everything. He needs a woman with her own life, capable of handling herself and not demanding his constant presence. Someone emotionally stable, who doesn’t create unnecessary drama and knows how to stay calm in stressful situations.
3- Perceptive with her emotions (and with his) Adler isn’t a man who expresses his feelings directly. He won’t say “I love you” easily, but he’ll show it through actions. His ideal woman must be sharp enough to read those signals. She must be someone who understands his body language, who knows when he’s worried without him saying it, who can read the tension in his jaw, the weight in his gaze, the slight change in his tone of voice. And most importantly: she must know when to push him and when to leave him alone.
Emotional outbursts have no place in Adler’s life. He handles situations with coldness and expects the same from those around him. A woman who confronts him with yelling or dramatics will immediately be pushed out of his circle of trust. What he respects is calculated responsiveness, strategic coldness, calmness in chaos. A woman who knows how to handle him with intelligence, who doesn’t pressure him but also doesn’t disappear, will be the only one capable of holding his interest.
4- Tough, but not impenetrable While Adler doesn’t want someone fragile or dramatic, he also isn’t looking for an emotionally impenetrable wall. His biggest issue is trust, so the woman who is with him must be someone who can be strong without becoming completely inaccessible. She should be someone who can allow herself to be vulnerable at the right moments, someone who can open up to him, even if subtly. If he sees her as completely closed off, he might feel it’s impossible to reach her, which would make him lose interest.
5- Not submissive, but not someone who confronts him all the time Adler wants a woman with character, someone who isn’t afraid of him, who challenges him, who makes him smile with clever responses or sharp remarks.
BUT.
He also wants balance. He’s not looking for a constant power struggle because, deep down, Adler is someone who needs to maintain control of situations. If she’s challenging all the time, she’ll wear him out. But if she never challenges him, she’ll bore him. She needs to know when to yield and when to stand her ground. He wants someone who doesn’t say yes to everything, who pushes him, who questions him. But also someone who knows when to let him take the lead. He’ll make decisions for her without consulting her because he believes he knows what’s best. She must be strong enough to stand up to him when necessary, but also shrewd enough to pick her battles.
While he’ll never fully let his guard down, there are moments when he’ll lower it. But this won’t happen immediately or easily. His love is a war of endurance, where the woman who is with him will have to prove she won’t break under his distance, silence, or calculated coldness. However, patience doesn’t mean submission. A woman who tolerates everything without questioning him will lose his interest. He needs someone with a strong sense of self, who knows when to yield and when to set an unshakable boundary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6- A youthful spirit, regardless of age Not because he necessarily needs to be with someone in their 20s, but because he wants someone who makes him feel alive. Someone with energy, a desire to learn, a touch of rebellion, someone who isn’t as jaded with life as he is. A woman in her 20s might, without realizing it, remind him of what it feels like to be in motion, to feel adrenaline, to have that inner fire. But it’s also a double-edged sword because if she’s too immature, too naive, or too dependent, he’ll find her unbearable. The key isn’t age, but vitality. At 54, Adler needs a woman who revitalizes him, who challenges him, who makes him feel alive. This doesn’t mean being explosive or hyperactive, but rather someone with character who gives him reasons to keep moving forward.
7- Self-confidence and self-assurance He doesn’t want someone jealous, dependent, or insecure. He wants a woman who trusts herself, who doesn’t need his constant validation. She also needs to trust him. His job puts him in contact with danger and untrustworthy people. If his partner distrusts him or constantly demands explanations, the relationship will quickly deteriorate.
Adler wouldn’t tolerate a fragile or emotionally dependent woman. Someone needy, who seeks constant validation or expects him to open up easily, will simply run into a wall of ice. He’s not a man who comforts with sweet words or offers gratuitous tenderness. The woman by his side must be strong, but not in a naive way; it’s not enough to be independent—she must understand the harshness of the world, grasp the game he’s playing, and accept his shadows without trying to change them.
8- Apprentice and Ally in His World If you don’t belong to his world, the ideal is that you at least have curiosity about it. He enjoys teaching: shooting, self-defense, evasion tactics… His way of saying "I love you" is by sharing his knowledge so his partner can survive on her own.
Adler isn’t looking for salvation or redemption. He doesn’t want someone who tries to heal him or asks too much about his past. In fact, the woman who truly has a chance with him must be able to accept that he will always keep secrets, that there will always be inaccessible parts of him, and that his love will never be completely unconditional. In return, he’ll offer loyalty and protection, but on his own terms.
9- Ability to Read His Love Language He’s not someone who says "I love you" easily, but he shows it through actions: protection, meaningful gifts, advice, subtle gestures. His ideal partner must be perceptive enough to pick up on these gestures and not need constant reassurance of his love.
10- Socially Complementary As an ENTJ, Adler can navigate any environment. His partner doesn’t need to be as extroverted, but she must know how to adapt. An INTJ, for example, fits perfectly because she enjoys her independence and prefers to observe rather than interact, letting Adler take the lead in social situations when necessary.
11- Awareness of the Risks of Their Relationship Loving Adler isn’t easy. His life is dangerous, his mind is a fortress, and his relationship can feel like an endless game of chess where he’s always one step ahead. His ideal partner must be strong enough to handle the uncertainty, occasional distrust, and risks that come with being with someone like him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion…
It wouldn’t be a conventional romance. There wouldn’t be effusive declarations of love or overflowing gestures of tenderness. Instead, there would be complicity in the shadows, fleeting moments of vulnerability that only she would see, protection disguised as indifference, and constant tests to measure her resilience. He’s a man of long silences, subtle tests, and constant challenges. His love doesn’t feel like a refuge, but like a trial by fire. But for the woman who can match his energy, who understands his language of war, and who knows when to get closer and when to step back, the bond will be unbreakable. Adler isn’t a man who loves lightly, but if he does, it will be a love that marks him forever.
Tumblr media
No quiere cargas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No quiere a alguien celosa, dependiente o insegura.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Well, I had to wake up at 4 AM because the power of my house blew out BUT, I suddenly thought of our BO OC's, it's raining out too! And the weather is lovely!
Aleks: Isn't it weird that men are likely to be more serious and don't tend to find the little happiness in their lives?
Jodie: Yeah, I feel the same..
Meanwhile, Koa, Vasili and Charles watching a raindrop from the window trying to make it's way down:
Koa: You can do it, you can do it!
Vasili, praying as he holds his hands and closed his eyes:
Charles, to himself: It should do it..
The very raindrop merges with another raindrop and it speeds itself and falls down over the window:
The three, shouting and screaming as they celebrate: LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
That's them! That is most DEFINITELY them! HA!
Boys being boys and they seem to have some weird intentions. Like watching the raindrop coming down. It's like watching sports! Hehehe!
And there's Aly and Jodie questioning of why men has to be so serious. WITHOUT even knowing of what the boys are REALLY up to!
This is pretty fun to imagined, Khushi. And also, you almost gave me a heart attack after reading the part saying BLEW. I have a one second thought that you meant you're house had been BLOWN up! But you meant your power. Ehehe...sorry.
I hope you're doing ok! As long the weather is nice! Love ya, pele!

PROLOGUE
"Me envenena, te envenena."
A lone cabin stood on the outskirts of town, nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia. Around it, the dense forest loomed, stretching endlessly into the distance. A worn, asphalt road cut through the landscape, the only path leading back to town.
The sky around was misty, but hauntingly pleasant. The brick house itself was small and unassuming, it weathered by time and the changing seasons. Faded white paint peeled along the eaves, and ivy crept stubbornly up one side, as if nature itself was reclaiming it. Yet, despite its worn exterior, the house breathed with quiet life.
The house of the Adlers from within, carried an air of quiet endurance. The wooden floor, though aged, remained clean and polished, its surface gleaming faintly under the dim lighting. Heavy curtains filtered the outside light, casting soft shadows that danced across the walls. The furniture, though decades old, was maintained impeccably, its polished wood and well-kept upholstery giving the illusion of freshness, as if time had been kind to it, even when it hadn’t been to those who once filled the space.
Every detail, from the carefully arranged books to the faint scent of old paper and wood polish, hinted at an attempt to preserve something long past, a home kept pristine despite the weight of memories pressing in from every side.
The front porch groaned underfoot, its planks whispering their age with every careful step, with a beautifully arranged garden in it. To the three siblings who called this house their own, the sound was as familiar as their own voices. It was the sound of home. The sound of coming in from the cold, of summers spent watching fireflies dance in the dusk, of whispered midnight conversations just beyond their parents' ears. It was a place worn but not broken, standing firm at the edge of the world they knew.
Vincent, Jodie, and Mila, was bound not just by blood but something deeper and unshakable. They spent their entire lives within these familiar walls, growing up under the watchful care of their father, Russell Adler.
He was a businessman, who often had to leave his home due to work reasons, worried about leaving his three children alone, because of his added responsibilities, but his love for them never died. Ever since the tragic incident that took away the life of his beloved wife, he was now a single father, taking care of the three since they were young, who were now grown up to be teenagers.
Evenings were the liveliest. The house had always echoed with laughter, the kind that could make walls feel less constricting and turn even the coldest nights warm. Dinner was always a noisy affair, with Mila teasing Vincent for his terrible table manners and Jodie rolling her eyes at both of them before their father’s deep chuckle settled their playful bickering. In moments like these, it was easy to forget how empty the world outside their little home seemed.
It was a normal day at the house of the Adler's. Vincent was snoring on the couch; with his face covered by a book he was reading previously.
Vincent was the sibling who had just finished high school and he was looking for a college that he can pursue his field in. He was drawn to psychology, to understanding the depths of the human mind, how experiences shape a person, and how past traumas can alter one's perception of reality. But reality weighed heavy on his aspirations. His academic scores weren’t enough to secure a spot in the programs he truly wanted, leaving him caught between ambition and limitation, uncertain of what path lay ahead.
Meanwhile, Mila was busy preparing her favourite recipe, trying to bake some cupcakes using a recipe book she bought from a local shop while travelling to town. Being the eldest, she had already completed her education, and wanted to open a bakery sooner and establish a business. But for that, she had to collect enough funds.
Lastly, Jodie was exercising in her room, moving and stretching her body as the music went on with the beat. Headphones on her ears, vibing as she joyfully danced. Jodie’s dream was to become an athlete, for which she had always been exercising and training for. She even did win a couple of medals and trophies from her school’s sport competitions, for which she even declared of joining the Olympics one day. As amazing as it sounds, the only thing was that she likely avoided studying, thinking it to be a distraction from achieving her dreams, though Mila persuaded her to complete her education, since it comes first than anything else.
Outside, their golden retriever, Timmy, slept soundly, keeping watch over the house as he always did. More than just a guard dog, he was their loyal companion, practically a family. A little child raised by siblings, as they liked to say.
Mila was downstairs, mixing the batter for the cupcakes, and was getting distracted by Jodie's constant footsteps thudding above like a one-person stampede. She called out for her to be less noisy, but Jodie, too possessed by the rhythm of her song, was busy vibing like she was at her own personal concert. "Jay! Keep it down, I'm trying to bake a cake!"
As the noise persisted, Mila groaned, rolling her eyes so hard they almost got stuck. She dragged a hand down her face, questioning all of her life choices. Then, glancing over, she spotted Vincent, who was still dead asleep, blissfully unaware of the chaotic disaster unfolding around him.
"These two will never learn." Mila sighs in annoyance, until she sees Adler coming out of the basement, quickly pulling out his keys and locking the door. He takes a deep sigh of relief, as the lock secured whatever was inside that room, tucking the keys back into his pocket.
"Ghost hunting down there, dad?" Mila chuckled. She remembered her father telling stories to the siblings of a “ghost” being down there, which they carried the old tale for years. The truth was, they were likely not allowed to enter the basement for a myriad of reasons. Reasons they never got to know about as well.
No matter how many times the siblings ask Adler about the basement, he was always able to make up an excuse to brush them off, saying that the one who touches the door.. gives them a curse? As stupid as it sounds, Adler was sure trying his best to have his kids stay away from the door as possible.
On the other hand, if anyone tried to know what was truly in the basement, it was none other than Vincent himself. Ever since he was a kid, he even tried to sneak his way to open the basement but always got caught by Adler. He was very stubborn to know what was inside. He himself never understood why Vincent was so keen to know what was in it.
Sooner or later, that became less of a bother for the siblings, as they never talked or wanted to know about the basement anymore. But, you’d never know when that thought would revoke within you, again. They say, curiosity kills the cat.
"Anything special, Em?" Adler asked as he made his way to the kitchen, spotting Mila busy with her baking. “Did you feed Timmy?”
“Yeah, Dad. Now he’s sulking like he just had the best meal in his whole life.”
“What is so special in there that makes you go there all the time, Dad?” Vincent mumbled through the book, as he groaned.
Adler shook his head, chuckling, ignoring the question Vincent had asked him many times, his attention now going to Mila. "Trying out that recipe again? You know what happened when you tried it the first time?"
"Yeah, Dad. I almost burned the kitchen down because we forgot to take the cupcakes out of the oven. I will be careful this time." Mila replied, chuckling as she continued mixing the batter.
"As long as we don't call the fire department again, we all are good." He leaned around the counter, while talking to his daughter.
"I’m careful with these things, unlike Jay or Vince. That’s my thing, not theirs." Mila sighed, and gently poured the batter into the tray moulds.
"Oh, really? And what makes you special?" Adler folds his arms, who was likely interested to know about Mila's reason, engaged into the conversation this instant.
"While you were gone, Jodie nearly set the microwave on fire while she tried heating up a bowl of stew, and Vince thinks stirring occasionally means staring at the food until it cooks itself. This is why I think twice before letting them in." Mila then places the cupcakes in the oven while recalling the past, setting the timer and letting them bake, sighing as she finishes with her work.
"It’s hard keeping everything in order, you know? Being the older sister isn't easy. Especially after Mom.."
"I know, Mila. You do a lot, more than you need to. And for this.. whatever you do, whatever happens, I’ll always be proud of you, it's a shame that I often have to go out of town to attend to my businesses, but there has never been a day that I have not missed you three." Adler paused a little, his voice slightly down with a tone of grief, looking at the ceiling as he wondered.
"After your mother, Aleks passed away.. it feels so different.” Adler shook his head, his eyebrows knitting at the thought of his wife, who had passed away years ago, after giving birth to the siblings. “You all have your dreams, and I am definitely entitled to help you fulfill them. Though some days, it feels like a battle I can’t win.”
Mila listened quietly as Adler spoke about Mom. A lump formed in her throat, realizing that neither she, nor Jodie or Vince had gotten the chance to meet her.
"I sometimes doubted if I could ever be a good dad for you, after all of this. But I don't want it to seem that I call you all kids a curse to my family." Adler looks at Mila, with concern. "You’re all I have. If I ever lost you.. I don’t know what I'd do. I think I'd go insane."
"No, Dad.." Mila looks at Adler gently, with hurt but compassion. "You’re all we have. After mom, you're the only one who can shelter us from this horrible destiny we’re going through. You’ve given us everything, and we’ll always be grateful. We’re doing this together, just like how Mom wanted." Mila then hugs Russell, in which he hugs her back, sharing a heartfelt moment with each other.
For a couple of moments, there was a slight pause. To which Adler broke the silence. "I might have to go again, Mila."
Mila pulls back from the hug, looking up at her dad. "Again?"
"Yeah.. they said they wanted me to be present in a meeting with some other company. Though I even tried persuading them not to take me there, but these guys.. ugh, they won't let me breathe." Adler groans, rubbing his face in frustration. "But don't worry, I-I've asked Aunt Park to take care of you three, like the last time. She'll be there for you while I'm gone."
At the news of finding out that she and the rest would be left alone at home, she barely reacted. She was used to it by now, watching him pack his stuff, say his goodbyes, and disappear for weeks at a time. A part of her wondered if he was growing distant, but she quickly shoved the thought aside, understanding that their father has a lot of responsibilities to handle. Ever since their mother’s passing, everything had been in shambles. Someone had to keep things together, and if that meant taking on more responsibility, Mila was willing to do it.
"But how am I supposed to celebrate my birthday without you?" Mila's voice wavered as she shook her head, trying to hold back tears. Adler's chest tightened. He hadn't even realized how close the date was and he was now going to leave this early.
"I know your birthday is super close, Mila. But I'll try all my best.. to come back to you all, and celebrate with you." Adler pressed his hand against Mila's shoulder.
"These next few weeks are going to be hell for me." She murmured, barely above a whisper. She lowered her gaze and leaned on the counter, trying to control her emotions.
"Mila, I—" Before Adler could continue his sentence, he was cut off by another familiar presence. "Are you leaving again?"
Suddenly, the two turned to face Jodie, who had overheard their conversation.
"Dad, you promised you’d stay with us for a couple of months." Jodie walked towards him; her voice laced with concern.
"Jay, I understand, but—"
"No, Dad. You can't do this." Jodie’s voice wavered; her brows furrowed in frustration. "Can't you cancel the trip? Mila's birthday is coming up, and we can't do everything without you!"
"I understand your worry, Jodie. But, my—"
"You always care about nothing but this business of yours, dad!" Jodie snapped, her voice breaking.
"Jodie, go upstairs." Mila interjected gently, trying to diffuse the tension. "I'm handling this, not you."
"No, Em!" Jodie’s voice cracked; her fists clenched. "You always have been the one taking a stand for us, why do you have to carry everything alone? If he did care for you, he would stay here, not wanting you to bear the burden. I don't understand what kind of business Dad has that makes him ever so invested in there instead of us."
"Jodie, please!" Mila protested, trying to hold her younger sister back, as Adler watched her daughter take out all the frustration she had held within herself. She walks towards Jodie and holds her shoulders. "Please, listen to me. It's okay. He promised that he'll come back to us, he'll try his best. I know him, he would never miss the date."
"You're just making yourself feel better, Em. It's just Dad who is not able to understand." Jodie glared at Adler, clearly disappointed how their dad was now leaving at the time of her elder sister's upcoming birthday. Vincent, who thought to be asleep, was overhearing the conversation in the kitchen as well, but kept himself in secret, not wanting to face his father as well after knowing he was going to leave for town again.
Adler sighed deeply, shaking his head slowly, as if the words were too much to bear. "I didn’t want this." He murmured, more to himself than anyone else. "I never wanted to fall apart from you. But after losing Aleks, it.. it shattered me. And now.." He swallowed hard, his voice thick with regret. “I can’t even have the courage to face you all three, because I’m myself ashamed that I couldn’t be a good father for you."
"But we said we'll do this together, Dad. You don't always have to leave thinking we can handle everything.” Jodie groaned, trying to ignore everything for what’s happening, as her eyes started to brim with tears. “You’re not bringing this up ever again. “It’s.. it’s that I don’t know if you really love us or not.”
Adler sighed as he caressed her face. “I love you, Jodie. I love all of you. I’m so blessed to have you as my children. You’re the reason why I’m still alive, or my life would have ended the day your mother died. But, I promise. One day, this will all end, and I'll be back with you all, forever."
"You're just making this up again, are you?" Jodie said with pain and disbelief in her voice. Mila shook her head, holding onto her tears.
"I'm not." Adler gives a nod, his voice in assurance. "I promise. This will end, and we'll be together. Again."
A faint creak echoed through the room as the wind rattled the window. The warmth from the oven felt distant now, drowned out by the chill settling over them. Jodie and Mila share glances at each other, their eyes conveying the message. Mila furrows her eyebrows, persuading Jodie to let Adler go. Vincent could only spectate the chaos unfolding. Jodie stares at her dad, deeply exhaling as she casts her head down. "Fine, Dad. This is the last chance. After this, we'll not give you any."
Adler sighed in relief, with a smile. "Thank you, sweetie. Come, give Papa a hug." He opens his arms for Jodie to join him for a warm embrace, as she hugs him back tightly. Mila also joins them, wrapping her arms around him.
"We'll miss you again, Dad." Mila said softly, rubbing her face against her father's shoulder, sniffing to hold her tears. Jodie couldn't seem to hold onto them any longer, letting the tears out. Just then, Vincent comes out from his hiding, who had been overhearing the whole conversation, standing there watching the three. His eyes were filled with tears too, as Adler watched him in pain along with the others. Vince, who had no choice, came running to him and hugged him as well, sobbing uncontrollably.
After a moment of venting out their pain of seeing their father go apart from them once more, Adler breaks the silence, still holding onto the three. “I'll be leaving tomorrow. I'll just get my things ready, because I'd have to leave early in the morning.” He said softly, though his voice lacked the strength it usually carried knowing he was going to be separated from his children again.
"It's fine, Dad. We understand.." Vincent sighed, wiping his tears off. "While you're gone, we'll have the preparations ready."
"Don't forget to bring me gifts."
"My chocolate." Jodie adds with Mila's request.
"And my Dostoevsky books." Vincent too adds up in the list with the things they want Adler to come back with.
"The best ones I can find. You'll love them for sure." Adler chuckles as he keeps hugging the three, as the scene fades.
The next morning, Adler gets prepared for town, as Mila helps him in wearing his coat and Jodie gives him his glasses, as the father smiles at his two daughters. Vincent was waiting for Adler and the rest to come downstairs, walking back and forth as he wasn't ready to see his father leave.
But, all of a sudden, his attention went towards the basement, as he stared at it for a good while, which made him wonder what even was in that basement that Dad didn't want to talk about. The curiosity was growing deep inside of the young’s mind. Checking to see if anybody was not watching, he walked towards it, and grabbed the handle, checking to see if it was locked or opened. Turns out, it was sealed shut, much to his disappointment.
“He must have kept the keys somewhere..” Vincent thought to himself. “What are you hiding, Dad?”
Quickly, Vincent regains his composure as he hears the footsteps. Adler walks down the stairs, seeing Vincent who was waiting for him. “Oh, Vincent. Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“No, Dad.. it’s alright, let’s just go.” Vincent shakes his head, stepping out of the house.
Cabs rarely passed through the road that led them to the city, since the area they lived was not a busy road, barely any soul dare to come there. But it seemed more like a peaceful place to live in, with no worry of noises or traffic, living and connecting with nature.
The street was pretty silent, but they waited patiently as the wind gently blew on their faces. A part of them did recall not letting Adler go, but they didn't want their Dad to also let go of his responsibilities that do still keep them intact. Finally, a cab was coming its way towards them, Vincent waved at the coming vehicle, as it slowed down next to them, whereas Adler faced the three siblings for the last time.
Timmy, their dog whined sadly, watching Adler go for town again. For the fact, Timmy dearly loved Adler too, like the siblings. The way he’d wag his tail when he’d see the man, and would jump on him excitedly, happy to see him back. But, seeing him leave again, broke his heart as he slightly bowed down, Jodie comforting him as she petted his head.
"Take care of yourselves."
"We're not children, Dad. We've been through this before." Jodie rolled her eyes, hearing Adler chuckles at his daughter's sarcastic remark.
“But you’re still a child, Jay.” Adler pointed.
"No one holds this family together the way Mila does. Not after what Mom left behind. She keeps everything going, even when she's sick, even when she’s exhausted. You don’t see it, but I do." Jodie continues.
"I too want to be equally responsible for what I do, Dad. I want to be just as responsible as her. Maybe you never really wondered what your eldest daughter is going through, and what it costs her to stay strong. But I see it. And maybe one day.." She paused, her voice quieter now. "I'll take it all on myself. Just so she doesn’t have to."
Adler was pretty silent on Jodie's response, but tried to brush his concerns away because there was no time for a bitter farewell. "Anyways, second, I don't want any of you to try to open or step inside that basement. Because there's?"
"A curse." Vincent rolled his eyes. "Kind of stupid but fine."
"And lastly, don’t forget to feed Timmy at times."
"Got it." Vincent gave a small nod, but his curiosity piqued him constantly, the urge in him to investigate the basement was slowly growing stronger. Timmy suddenly woofed.
“And as I always say, don't—"
"Burn the house down." The three said in unison, promising not to cause any more chaos in his absence. Adler gives a warm smile, nodding in acceptance.
"That's more like it." Adler opens the door of the cab, stepping inside the vehicle with his suitcase, shutting the door and opening the window pane, offering a one last message before he leaves. "See you in a few days."
“Oh, and one more thing.” Suddenly, Adler thought of something as he looked at his children again. “I heard there's been some issues with the signal and telephone lines recently and the hills don't help. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work at any point or the signal gets lost, it should be resolved in a day or two."
Mila gives a nod with a sly smile, holding onto the hope that her dad would come back soon. She has always been the person to hold onto some kind of optimism that even in her Dad's absence, she understands how hard it must have been for him to go through all the stress after their mother's death, something which does give her the reason to sympathize with her father.
He may not be perfect. But he was their Dad, and always will.
“And lastly, do keep the candles burning for me.” Adler smiles before he shuts the window close, preparing to leave.
The cab then accelerates, taking him away as the three wave him goodbye. The cab was long gone, slowly disappearing from their sights as they still stared at the running vehicle. They turned away, making their way back home until Jodie coughed, slightly wheezing as if she lost some air. Timmy looked up at her, his tail wagging as he was curious to know what happened to her.
"Woah, Jay you're good?" Vincent asked, with concern when Jodie held her chest.
"I'm fine, it’s just a cough." Jodie cleared her throat, coughing a little more again.
"Maybe the smoke of the vehicle might have irritated her lungs for a bit. She'll be good anyway.” Mila adds as they walk their way back, her gaze briefly shifting to the street ahead, before turning back.
But this was just the beginning of it all.
