The coastal grandmother aesthetic, term coined by TikToker Lexi Nicoleta, is one of the many niche aesthetics making its rounds of the internet right now- and my personal favorite. It represents a life spent valuing the little things, romanticized by the image of a slow-paced, quaint, seaside summer. A coastal grandma is typically an affluent older woman, a confident, lives-life-on-her-own-terms sort of person enjoying a slower summer by the coast before she returns to her busy urban worklife. The aesthetic is defined by comfy-chic clothing, knickknacks reminiscent of the ocean, and an emphasis on a life well lived.

Of course, it isn’t a necessity to be a grandmother or live in a quaint beach town to embody this aesthetic- at its essence, the coastal grandma aesthetic is all about romanticizing everyday life, breezy, chic clothing and a relaxed small-town vibe

Collecting some of the aesthetic videos I've been watching lately! There were others I checked out to understand wtf is going on without touching tik tok, but a lot of the umbrella videos have iffy quality imo. One better example kind of branched out of fashion into broad visual/lifestyle trends, but missed some big fashion looks. Another youtuber started recapping everything listed on the aesthetic wiki alphabetically but took a breather after reaching 'B' lol. List is under the cut for anyone curious. :P

I've seen a few things on kawaii, fairy kei, witchcore, aliencore, spacecore, vaporwave, glitchcore, etc. but I haven't found videos that felt like they fully hit the nail on the head for me.

What I have found really exciting is how people treat fashion as an art form and explore what can be communicated through it. Similar to how I do designs for video games, I like seeing people experiment with what's possible and integrate new and exciting expressions into fashion. I also think with IRL clothing (besides managing budget lbr T_T) there's a balance of figuring out what is practical and fits into the world/your own life versus self-expression and composition.

Plus, I genuinely have a longstanding love for how varied cuts of clothing, materials, and color palettes can dramatically transform presentation. To me that's part of celebrating multiple forms of beauty and a fun puzzle to work with. So while I've seen critique over certain aesthetics being too narrow or exclusive, I also think it's an opportunity for people to go 'Fuck exclusivity, what's MY spin on this concept?' with amazing results! Thin, pale, and fem isn't the only demographic that gets to participate. If something hasn't been done already that's an opportunity to see what you can do! Anyway. I figure it's pretty normal not to fit into any aesthetic exactly lol, and ofc no one is obligated to respond to this. But I am def curious if anyone passing by might have stuff they gravitate toward. ^^

Coastal Grandmothers are those who are effortlessly stylish (but in a comfy way), have a put-together presence (without trying too hard), know how to be the best hostess (while never breaking a sweat), and appreciate the finer things (yet still feel approachable).

This doesn’t sound much like a trend to me, but it’s definitely being called one and I think it’s so much fun!

First came Nancy Myers Chic, closely followed by Coastal Grandmother Chic! The coastal grandmother aesthetic is based on the clean and classic style of middle-aged, wealthier women living in beautiful oceanfront properties, similar to that of Diane Keaton in the Nancy Meyers movie, Something’s Gotta Give, which was set in the Hamptons. The Coastal Grandmother trend is really as much about the lifestyle as it is about the clothing!

Coastal grandmothers wear cashmere cardigans with linen pants in neutral colors, they love to garden, take walks on the beach, and sip white wine while reading on their front porches. Who wouldn’t love this lifestyle…I’m in!!

They cook fresh meals with goods they picked up at the farmers market in their Nancy Myers styled kitchens (think It’s Complicated), which are accessorized with neutral and natural elements like butcher block, open shelving and rattan.

And, of course, they listen to soft jazz or Melody Gardot while cooking. Believe it or not, I found a couple of Nancy Myer’s style playlists on Spotify that you might want to play while you’re cooking dinner tonight! Listen here and here! I’m loving this!
