Genders:
Lavanatomic - A gender under the anatomic system(link), related to lava, anatomy, the "anatomy" of lava and molten rock, the anatomy of something or someone being made up of lava, having anatomy made of lava and so on.
Firegender - Firegender is a xenogender identity in which one's gender is in a constant state of change but never truly extinguishes. It is aesthetically linked to fire as a visual metaphor or symbol.
Fiergender - Fiergender [fier coming from the word 'fiery'] is a gender related to the colours red and orange, fire, foxes, anger, and heat. This gender may feel hot, angry/annoyed, and fiery.
Infernvambatic - A gender identity related to fire and vampire bats; vampire bats that are on fire; vampire bats with fire magic; the emoji combo 🔥🦇🔥; etc...
Burninglogic - .+ a gender related to the log/wood emoji (🪵), and the fire emoji (🔥) in some way. could be the emojis on their own, the smell of campires/burning wood, the aesthetic of wood and fire, etc.
CandLitScentic - A scentic gender related to the aroma of lit candles, scented or not, the smell of a burning wick and melting wax is heavily tied to one's gender.
Firedeity - a gender connected to fire and deities, a deity associated with fire, or a deity of fire.
Ragefiric - a gender relating to raging fires, of course! one may also connect with fiery tempers or things getting burnt
Sunfiregender - a gender related to the sun and fire somehow! could be about how the sun is sometimes called a ball of fire, could be related to setting fires with sunlight, just suns and fires separately, whatever!
Volcanogender/Lavagender/Magmagender - A gender that is dormant most of the time but sometimes erupts with extreme heat and intensity, similar to how volcanoes erupt. It can be used by itself or combined with other terms, e.g. volcanoboy, volcanogirl, volcanononbinary, etc.
Pyrapanthic - A combination of pyrogender and catgender, in which your gender is connected to big cats, fire, and the way that both are violent/aggressive in nature but aren't "bad" for being that way, they just are.
Lavagender - For a few days it’ll be a stable gender, nice and consistent. But after a while it turns into something completely different. And then that something will change into another thing that’s completely different after a few days time again.
PyromaniEnigmatic - an -enigmatic gender that relates to ones pyromania, being hard to fully understand and deal with, smoke and flames from the urges of pyromania obscuring clear vision and understanding of ones gender and ones pyromania being so deeply tied to ones gender that t becomes hard to understand it from any other angle but by the light of a burning flame.
Pyrofluid - A gender defined by a strong fire aesthetic, like pyrogender, but in this case a person can change between feeling “warm” and feeling “cold” about their gender. A pyrogender person always "feels warm" about the gender, it may just dwindle but never extinguish. Pyrofluid people can “feel cold”, and when that happens it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be agender or on the agender spectrum. It may just mean that they end up feeling apathetic about their gender, not wanting to think about it.

Blaire Dare
Tumblr media
Full Name: Blaire Harley Dare
Gender: Female
Age & DOB: 24 & April 19th
Occupation: Detective
Appearance: Blaire has long blonde hair and full blue eyes. She stands at 5'5", with a lean figure from hunting most of her life. She’s got a lean, oval face with big blue eyes and full lips. Her hair falls in the middle of her back. She keeps it tied up in a high ponytail or left down, keeping it straight most of the time. Blaire’s figure is a lean, long figure. She’s long-legged and she’s got an average-sized torso. She’s got a few scars as reminders of hunts gone wrong. Blaire has a scar that is faint but lines part of her right collar bone from a knife that got a little two close. The other scars can be noticeable on her back and lower abdomen. Blaire has a soft English accent that only comes out when she’s angry. Usually, her voice is even, maybe a little sarcastic at times. She’s got a single tattoo that lines her left hip, an arrow with a single word threw it. The word, love meant the love that’s kept her alive all these years. She’s seen typically in jeans and leather jackets. Blaire has her favourite pair of boots that she wears all the time. The faded brown boots stop at her ankles and are always accompanied by jeans and a black tank top. She’s rarely seen in anything other than comfortable hunting clothes.
FC: Amber Heard
Personality: Blaire is flirty and fun. when she has alcohol in her system. When she doesn’t she has a tense more bitter side to her. She tends to be uptight and serious all the time. Blaire is actually decently smart, not that many would know that as she only uses her brains when she’s on the case. When she’s hunting she’s learned that it’s not a time for fun, but when she’s out drinking she can be a party animal. She’s the queen of one night stands because she feels like anything that’s long term isn’t going to last long because of her job. Blaire can be cold-shouldered to people that have hurt her, and she tends to be one that holds grudges. Blaire can sometimes get angry when people underestimate her for being a female, and that’s when she flies off the handle, feeling that it’s not okay for people to think she’s weaker or dumber because of her gender, hair colour or drunk persona.
History & Background: Blaire Harley Dare was born to two English detectives on a rainy spring night of April 19th, both her parents were legacies of an elite wealthy club in Europe. She never found that she was a legacy as her family uprooted after a falling out between her father and the elders and they moved to the United States when she was six. Her parents started training her at the age of seven. She’s only known life on the road. Blaire found that her accuracy and shooting had become very good at a young age so she focused more on her studies, both parents well versed in many subjects and the world. Blaire grew up on the road, hearing stories of her home although she didn’t much remember it. And the way her parents talked about it she never intended on going back home either. Blaire’s parents took a lot of cases from an agent in the States. During her teen years, is when she started to rebel, going on cases on her own. She got herself into a lot of trouble which leads to the scars she has now. She lost her parents to a gang case gone wrong on her 21st birthday. Since then she stayed grounded in one town, working her way up the chain to becoming a detective in her local precinct. Her partner Dominic being her only friend in the city, spending most of their days together riding through the streets and nights at Declan’s famous “Bunker” bar.

Dominic Matei
Tumblr media
Full Name: Dominic Matei
Gender: Male
Age & DOB: 26 & August 29th
Occupation: Police Officer
Appearance:  As a young child, Dominic had bright hazel-green eyes and light blond hair. Throughout his infant years, her eyes lightened to a more green colour.  He grew into his features, an almost identical replica of his father, with his long dark hair and dark eyes. Taking after his father, in his stance and the way she walked. Dominic also has most of his father’s stern grumpy-looking features. His brows furrowed most of the time and his lips pursed. That didn’t stop Dominic from constantly smiling and laughing. His skin tone now less pale, darkened slightly from going out and playing in the sun when he could as a young boy. Once Dominic hit eighteen, the majority of his features heightened and suddenly he really started to take more after his father. His cheekbones are sharp, making that one of his more noticeable features. He stands around 6′2″. He’s got a lean figure that is claud most of the time in dark clothes.
FC: Sebastian Stan
Personality: Dominic as a young boy, was more on the shy side. He clung to his parents for most of his younger years, shy and quiet but friendly to anyone his parents told her were family. As he grew up Dominic became more outgoing, wondering around to meet new people and not being afraid to crack a smile and joke at people he felt that might need it. He started to become more of an extrovert, someone who started talking to more people and someone who wasn’t afraid to ask questions when he needed clarification. Throughout his teen years, Dominic became more of a social butterfly. He wanted to meet new people all the time and he wanted to explore the world. Both parents letting her do so, with their supervision - Dominic easily picking up on different traits from her parents. He took after his father, though some of his hard-ass’ personality. He’s not afraid to get in a fight being the older brother of two younger sisters - especially if he knows he can win. He took after her mother as well in the sense he’s fun and keeps his family close to his heart. If anyone hurts the people he loves, he’d destroy them.
History & Background: Dominic was born in a small home on the outskirts of the city. He grew up with a stay at home mom and a father with a simple job of being a police officer in their small town. He was the oldest of three, having two younger sisters, taking care of them any chance he got. His family and he were comfortable for the eighteen years that he lived at home. After graduating high school he enrolled in the academy to follow in his father’s footsteps. After finishing at the academy, he tried to get placed in his father’s station. A few months into the job his father passed away from a sudden heart attack. Dominic was ruined, and he couldn’t bear to stay at home any longer. At that point in his life, he decided and knew that he had better chances of working in the city. So he packed up his things and left home mere weeks after his father’s passing as was placed at Station 91 where his partner Blaire worked. Since then, he’s been happier, not going home to see his family as much as he should have. But at least he had the bar and Blaire to confide his feelings in.
Aesthetics:  blue. black. uniform. gun. red. lights. gun powder. silver. badge. charger. sirens. graves. grey. parking lots. beer. station. blood. heart.
Song: Death Because of Death - Slipknot
Gavriel Novak
Tumblr media
Full Name: Gavriel Novak
Gender: Male
Age & DOB: 29 & June 16
Occupation: Army Sergeant
Appearance: Gavriel has light hair, that has streaks of dark in it that reaches his eyes and light blue eyes like his father. He like his mother has a lovely smile and kind eyes. Most of his features make him look a lot like his late mother, except for his blue eyes and lighter hair like his father. He is around 6’ 1’ -6’ 2", although he considers himself short for his age. He is pretty fit and healthy. Like his father, he enjoys going to the gym and eating healthy. He loves to sketch and spends a lot of time sketching people he cares about.
FC: Sam Heughan
Personality: He is nice to everyone, he has the heart of his mother, true and pure but has the brains of his father. He can make some iffy choices, but in hopes that they turn out well. In most cases they do. He likes to read and learn. He is a fighter, like his father. He is a gentleman and enjoys being honest with people. He can definitely speak his mind when he wants to. He likes to treat everyone with utter respect because his father taught him to be good to everyone. He thinks like his mother in emergency situations. Due to being a fighter, he became incredibly quick at thinking outside the box and strategically.
History & Background: Born in a rough time, Gavriel lost his mother in childbirth which left him only his father. A father who was constantly on the move due to his job. Gavriel grew up in a similar fashion his father did, not staying in schools for longer than a few months and barely making friends when he was there for more than those three months. He quickly followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the army right out of high school he quickly worked his way up to the top, being better and smarter than most of his classmates. Eventually, he made it to the position of sergeant in which he quickly fell into the role of becoming more strategic and less childlike. He’s been in the army ever since and has never planned on leaving. During one of his leave periods, he ended up back in the city were his ex-wife lived. In his first week of being home, he found solace at a bar called the Bunker, where he learned of the regulars that came through and stayed in the city, including Blaire, Declan, Kent, and Dominic.

Song: One Hell of An Amen - Brantley Gilbert
Declan King
Tumblr media
Full Name: Declan King
Gender: Male
Age & DOB: 28 & January 24th
Occupation: Bartender
Appearance: Declan like his father has bright blue-green eyes, that light up when he talks and tells stories. He has darkish hair like his father, most of his appearance taking after his father. He is tall, around 6'4". He towers over his mother, around the same height, maybe taller than his father. His face is not pale but not tan, just in between. He has got little crinkles by his eyes that crinkle when he laughs and smiles. He has all his pearly whites and a killer smile that makes his appearance much friendlier than he actually is. He has got a lean muscular build, which he prides himself on. He keeps his hair cut short and well tamed. His facial features resemble his father’s. His upper body like both parents is built and strong, along with the lower half of his body. Being in the business he’s in, he’s also got a considerable amount of tattoos littered around most of his body.
FC: Jensen Ackles
Personality: Declan like both parents, he is a weary person. Doesn’t trust the people that he doesn’t know. Making him sometimes not the easiest person to deal with. But, like his father, he’s a selfless soul and when he sees someone in danger he’ll risk his life for them. He’ll put everything on the line for his family and friends. Like his mother, he is a natural-born leader, someone who will defy the orders of people that are doing wrong and hurting others. He is sort of a cold, stone-like person when you first talk to him, but after time he opens up and he becomes someone that is reliable and trustworthy. He can be funny, flirty and a bit of a troublemaker for both his parents and anyone that knows him.
History & Background: Declan was born into a single mother family, with four other siblings. He quickly learned how to fend for himself when his mother went off the radar for months at a time. At the age of 15, he moved away from the town he grew up in and tried to fend for himself in a big city. He started working at an old friends bar, and when he was ready enough, Declan tried and opened his own cop bar. Pouring his sweat and joy into the joint, he quickly became popular for his mixed drinks and classic rock music that played in his bar. He’d see the regulars come through the bar fairly regularly, them becoming his only connection to the outside world as he lived and breathed the Bunker. Since moving to the big city at such a young age, he never knew what happened to his mother and his siblings after all those years. He also had no intention to try to find them either, the sense of abandonment looming over him almost every day.
Aesthetics: air. wings. diamonds. roses. metal. iron. rain. snow. lace. silk. moon. stars. silver. steel. sugar. salt. glass. smoke. ash. bruise. scar. wind. spices. light. dark. sweat. dust. scratches. glitter. cold. frost. pearls. sapphires. lightning. moonlight. stone. wolves.

Kent Henderson
Tumblr media
Full Name: Kent Henderson
Gender: Male
Age & DOB: 30 & January 4th
Occupation: Criminal Lawyer
Appearance: Kent is fair-skinned, with dark hair and light eyes. He’s got a strong build, not overly muscular, but enough to hold his own when he has too. He doesn’t have an overly tall build but he averages where most men stand. His features resemble more edged and rigid than soft, making him look more serious than he leads on to believe. Due to his features being serious, he’s never lost a hand in poker. His features stay unreadable for the most part, never really changing from the same stony expression he wears every day.
FC: Luke Evans
Personality: The more serious of the group, Kent has a stone-cold personality. He doesn’t enjoy jokes and has no desire to make friends with anyone. He’s ruthless and isn’t afraid to step on necks to achieve his goals, which would be owning the law firm he’s currently a senior lawyer at. He’s aggressive, angry and emotionless all in one. He has no sympathy bone in his body, making it very easy for him in court, but not in any other aspects of his own life.
History & Background: Kent was born in the city to two never truly present parents. Both being lawyers who put their own work before their son, Kent grew up with more nannies than most of his childhood friends did. As he grew up, Kent became more snobby and aggressive for his parent's attention. Despite his constant efforts to get his parents to notice him, they didn’t and he ended up just doing whatever he wanted when he headed into his teen years. After graduating high school, he went to college on his parent's dime and got himself a law degree. Kent worked for another firm, opposite to his parents where he quickly excelled and climbed the political ladder. Only then did his parents start to notice him, not that he cared at that point in his life. He much more preferred to be in the company of a good glass of scotch in his favourite bar, the Bunker. The same bar that Declan, his favourite bartender worked at and all the police including Blaire, and Dominic went to.
Aesthetics:  sparks. suits. briefcase. black. tie. office. impala. glass. money. coins. scotch. whiskey. white. papers. court. judge. gavel.

More Bad News for DRBC: Bradford County Groundwater Quality Just Fine
Tom Shepstone Shepstone Management Company, Inc.
Penn State University just released the results of a groundwater study of Bradford County, Pennsylvania and it’ll only give the DRBC more good news heartburn.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. The Pennsylvania House State Government Committee hearing on Monday saw minority party members from Southeast Pennsylvania  challenge the SRBC finding of “no discernible impact” from natural gas development on water quality. They brought up a talking point from Tracy Carluuccio at the Delaware Riverkeeper suggesting a USGS study contradicted that finding. As I noted here, it was USGS BS from the mouth of the Povertykeeper. The rebuttal, though it wasn’t necessarily intended as such, came quickly from a Penn State University research story by Matthew Carroll at Penn State News, which we offer below.
Here’s what Penn State had to say (emphasis added):
A new study of groundwater in a rural Pennsylvania county shows only rare instances of possible gas contamination amid an overall trend of improving water quality despite heavy Marcellus Shale development.
By investigating data from gas companies, the state, and the U.S. Geological Survey, researchers saw possible contamination by natural gas near no more than seven out of 1,385 shale wells studied in heavily drilled Bradford County. The rest of the water chemistry data highlighted that groundwater had either improved or remained level from samples taken prior to the 1990s.
“The most interesting thing we discovered was the groundwater chemistry in one of the areas most heavily developed for shale gas – an area with 1400 new gas wells – does not appear to be getting worse with time, and may even be getting better,” said Susan Brantley, director of Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute and distinguished professor of geosciences. “But using data analytics we could also see rare sites that warrant more investigation for possible gas anomalies.”
Brantley and an interdisciplinary team of geoscientists and computer scientists used new data-mining techniques to study a large dataset of 11,000 groundwater samples from the 2010s, taken after drilling in Bradford County.
The team recently reported their findings in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
“Unlike previous studies, our findings show that groundwater quality might even be improving in an area heavily exploited for shale gas — northeastern Bradford,” said Tao Wen, a post-doctoral scholar in Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute and lead author on the paper.
Using data-mining techniques and learning computer models, the team searched for patterns in methane concentrations, a possible indicator of contamination from shale gas wells that use fracking to extract shale gas.
Methane also naturally occurs around geological features like fault lines and valleys. Data-mining techniques help researchers sort through large amounts of data to find elevated methane levels and determine possible sources.
“We look at methane in this groundwater data and we actually can see geology in the data,” Brantley said. “I can tell you where there are faults, where there are big folds in the rock based on the groundwater. Then what we look for is where the water chemistry does not look like the geology and looks like something we don’t understand. Our hypothesis is sometimes that shows you something about human activities, like shale development.”
The team found slightly elevated levels of methane near seven of 1,385 shale gas wells in the study area that were not explained by geological features alone. The team also analyzed other indicators in all the water samples — iron, manganese, total dissolved solids, sulfate, pH — and found they had either improved or remained level compared to sites sampled in the 1980s.
“Data-mining highlighted a few, rare sites of possible methane contamination close to seven shale gas wells and a few conventional wells,” Wen said. “Such sites should be sampled and studied in the field. Rare methane contamination cases are consistent with the overall observation that shale gas production has not downgraded the average groundwater quality overall over time.”
This research could document improved groundwater quality caused by decreased acid rain, especially since the implementation of the Clean Air Act, or decreased steel production or coal burning, researchers said in the paper.
“I think that’s really a story of what’s been done since the 1970s and the Clean Air Act and its amendments that have lowered atmospheric deposition,” Brantley said. “If such deposition is impacting groundwater chemistry positively that is important – but it needs to be investigated more.”
Researchers have made their data public online at data.cuahsi.org and have released the date-mining technique at https://github.com/shawu810/RegionalCorrelation.
The National Science Foundation Interdisciplinary Research and Education (INSPIRE) program, which seeks to support bold, interdisciplinary projects in science, engineering and education supported this research.
The only thing wrong with this report is that the researchers suggest other studies found the opposite. There may be some but it’s not clear what’s being referenced and, as we’ve noted repeatedly, the data is entirely consistent with SRBC stream water studies (ground water and stream water are integrally connected) and several previous methane studies.
It’s horribly bad news for the Povertykeeper/Riverkeeper and its gang of parroting representatives in the legislature.

North Korea, Iran, Gina Haspel: Your Wednesday Evening Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good evening. Here’s the latest.
1. Pyongyang freed three American prisoners, in perhaps the most tangible gesture by North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, to improve relations with the U.S. It was a diplomatic victory for President Trump.
Mr. Trump said he planned to meet the detainees, all U.S. citizens of Korean descent, seen above on a news broadcast, when they land in the U.S. at 2 a.m. Eastern. He also announced that the time and location had been set for the summit meeting with Mr. Kim, giving only one detail: It will not be at the DMZ.
But a new question is dogging the planning: Will Mr. Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal send the wrong message to North Korea?

2. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reacted angrily to President Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal. He hinted at stepping up the country’s nuclear program, citing the need for electricity.
3. Gina Haspel, President Trump’s nominee to lead the C.I.A., told senators at her confirmation hearing that she would not allow the agency to restart an interrogation program that employed torture techniques.
She gave her first account of her role in the destruction of interrogation videotapes that showed the torture of Qaeda detainees at a secret C.I.A. prison in Thailand she briefly oversaw. The Trump administration is conveying confidence that Ms. Haspel, who would be the first woman to run the agency, will be confirmed.
In our Opinion section, Fatima Boudchar, a Moroccan now living in Istanbul, describes being tortured in a secret C.I.A. prison while she was pregnant: “Some of what they did to me in that prison was so awful I can’t talk about it. They hit me in the abdomen just where the baby was. To move me, they bound me to a stretcher from head to toe, like a mummy. I was sure I would shortly be killed.”
4. The first casualty of the high-tech cold war between the U.S. and China might be the biggest electronics maker you’ve never heard of.
The Chinese firm ZTE has 75,000 employees, does business in more than 160 countries, and is the No. 4 smartphone vendor in the U.S. Above, its logo on a building in Beijing.
But it’s facing a death sentence: It says it has ceased “major operating activities” after the Trump administration banned the company from using components made in the U.S., saying it had failed to punish employees for violating sanctions against North Korea and Iran.

5. The Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis revealed that it had spoken to lawyers for the special counsel, Robert Mueller, about $1.2 million in payments to a shell company controlled by Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime fixer, above.
Mr. Cohen used that company to pay hush money to Stormy Daniels, and the payments came to light when her lawyer released a document that contained details of the transactions.
Novartis said it made the payments for a yearlong consulting contract on “health care policy matters” that began shortly after Mr. Trump’s inauguration. AT&T and a firm tied to a Russian oligarch made similar payments.
6. The outcome of primaries in four Republican-leaning states — West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina — are rattling Congress.
Republicans averted a worst-case scenario — the nomination of the ex-convict coal baron Don Blankenship in West Virginia — but faced warning signs elsewhere. Here are the full results from each race and six takeaways.
Above, the Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio, Richard Cordray, and his running mate, Betty Sutton.

7. The Mormon Church and the Boy Scouts of America are ending a 105-year partnership.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said it would develop its own youth leadership and development program to serve its growing membership around the world.
In recent years, the Boy Scouts has announced it will drop “Boy” from its name, ended a ban on gay youth and leaders, and paved the way for transgender boys to join.

8. We looked ahead to the Tony Awards, coming June 10.
Our chief theater critics, Ben Brantley and Jesse Green, weighed in on what they loved (and hated) this season.
They made their predictions for what will win, and discussed what should win, and what should have been nominated. Above, Lauren Ambrose as Eliza Doolittle in the musical “My Fair Lady.”

9. We’re sure we don’t have to remind you, but just in case: Mother’s Day is Sunday.
Our Mother’s Day gift guide covers tried-and-true winners, like chocolates, wine and jewelry — but also a DNA test kit, a smooth tequila and, in a section of recommendations from readers, an innovative way to preserve family memories. Above, a simple backyard herb kit, for $20.
10. Finally, Donald Glover released the video for his new single, “This Is America,” on the same day that he hosted (and sang) on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend.
Performing as Childish Gambino, Mr. Glover spurred lots of debate with the heavily political video, which is loaded with symbolism and shot in a surrealist style. Here’s a rundown of some of the best writing about it.
And on the late-night shows, Jimmy Fallon told the crowd about walking the red carpet at the Met Gala with Stephen Colbert. Inside the gala, he complimented Madonna’s outfit (before she emerged from a monastic hood to sing “Like a Prayer”).
Her reply? “Bless you.”
Have a great night.

THE YOUNGEST MARCHER By Cynthia Levinson Illustrated by Vanessa Brantley Newton (Picture book; ages 5-9)
This picture book about Audrey Faye Hendricks, a 9-year-old girl who marched in Dr. Martin Luther King's Children's March and was jailed for a week, shows how one child overcame fear and joined in the fight for justice. In my original review, I wrote, "Levinson and Newton keep her story bright and snappy, emphasizing the girl's eagerness to make a difference and her proud place in her community."

THE WHISPERING TOWN By Jennifer Elvgren. Illustrated by Fabio Santomauro. (Picture book; ages 5-8)
This picture book with a graphic novel sensibility tells the story of a young girl, Anett, whose family is harboring Jewish refugees in a Danish fishing village. Anett brings food to the mother and child hidden in her cellar, and helps guide them to boats on one moonless night. The title is derived from her suggestion that the whole town whisper directions to the pair to ensure they don't get lost. Though the book was originally suggested for the 7 to 11 age range, our reviewer, Elizabeth Wein, said it felt appropriate as an introduction to the Holocaust for younger children.

NUMBER THE STARS By Lois Lowry (Ages 8-12)
This Newbury Medal-winning novel, told from the perspective of 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen, tells the story of the Jews who escaped certain death in Denmark in 1943. When word gets out that the Nazis intend to round up all the Jewish people in the country, Annemarie and her family save her best friend, Ellen Rosen, by pretending she is Annemarie's sister and helping her make it to a fishing boat that will bring her and her family to safety in neutral Sweden. It's a novel grounded in dark historical truth and yet full of hope.

WE WILL NOT BE SILENT The White Rose Student Resistance Movement that Defied Adolf Hitler By Russell Freedman (Ages 10-14)
This nonfiction account, aided by many archival photos and materials, tells the story of the German teenagers who banded together to fight secretly against the Nazis, rallying their fellow citizens by writing and distributing thousands of leaflets denouncing Nazi atrocities. "We are your bad conscience," they said to the Nazi leaders. Freedman tells their story of resisting with words effectively and concisely.

Book Riot editor and "Here We Are" author Kelly Jensen posted a request on Twitter last Friday: "My 33rd birthday is next month, and between now and then, I'd love to see 33 classroom literacy projects completed. Up for the challenge?"
Many of the teachers Jensen highlights write about their desire to create diverse classroom libraries. They've asked for funding to buy "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas, "When Dimple Met Rishi" by Sandhya Menon, "Brown Girl Dreaming" by Jacqueline Woodson, books from Scholastic's "Dear America" series.
"It makes a huge difference when students have books that let them know they're being seen - that their perspectives and voices matter," Jensen said. "It's huge what kids will take with them from that."

The New Uniform of White Supremacy: Interview with Susan Campbell Bartoletti
"What we see in a lot of images coming out of Charlottesville are these very clean-cut-looking young men," says Susan Campbell Bartoletti, the author of They Called Themselves the K.K.K.: The Birth of an American Terrorist Group and Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow. "They're putting the face of a gentleman on values that are, in my opinion, anything but gentlemanly."
Toward the end of our conversation, Bartoletti points out a particularly chilling antecedent to the uniforms seen in Charlottesville. She directs me to Nazi propaganda: posters of clean-cut white men towering over people and, in one, shoveling aside presumably Jewish and black men. Several posters show the Nazis dressed in white button-ups and khakis. The resemblance is haunting. "And they didn't hide their faces either, did they?" Bartoletti asks rhetorically.

-A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams - After their home is destroyed in a fire, Rosa, her mother and grandmother save up to buy a comfortable chair for all of them to enjoy. A heart-warming celebration of a loving family.
-One Green Apple by Eve Bunting - Farah feels alone at school, even around all her classmates. She listens and nods but doesn't speak... because she doesn't know the language. But on a field trip to an apple orchard, she discovers that many things make the same noises they did at home. As the class combines all their apples in the cider press they discover that mixing all those different things together makes one delicious drink.
-Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson - Clara is a seamstress in the Big House, and dreams of a reunion with her Momma who lives on another plantation. Then she hears two slaves talking about the Underground Railroad, and she figures out how to use the cloth in her scrap bag to hide a map of the land - a freedom quilt to guide the way.
-Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson - I put this on every book list I possibly can because it is beautiful and insightful and eminently readable. I read it as an adult, but I'd say it's suitable for anyone from fourth grade up. Woodson write about growing up in South Caroline and New York in the 1960s and 70s. She talks of the remnants of Jim Crow laws, and her growing awareness of the civil rights movement.
-The Whispering Town by Jennifer Elvgren - When people in a small Danish fishing village shelter a Jewish family during the Holocaust, they must get the family safely to the harbor to board a fishing boat and get to neutral Sweden. They devise a plan to communicate without attracting attention and risking the family's safety.
-Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - When the German troops begin their plan to "relocate" all the Jews in Denmark, Annemarie Johansen's family takes in her best friend and hides her in plain sight as part of their family. The book shows how the Danish Resistance smuggled almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark - close to 7,000 people - across the water to Sweden. It deals with an unimaginable tragedy but the hope and love of the people in the story make it a good book for middle-to-older elementary schoolers. It's one of our favorites.

Detroit Museums Examine the Riots That Changed the City
The story of Detroit's July 1967 riots is, in some ways, a tale of two cities, one black and one white. Now, 50 years later, three neighboring museums here are revisiting that fateful summer with exhibitions that portray and explore the riots in sharply different ways.
Tumblr media
Erin Falker, an assistant curator at the museum, said that they chose to place "Flag for the Moon: Die Nigger" by Faith Ringgold, a distortion of the United States flag from 1969 that spells out the racial epithet in its stripes, across from the khaki-colored "Patriot" by Jeff Donaldson, from 1975, and "Weight" by Mr. Phillips, from 2001. Ms. Falker said the grouping highlighted the remembrance that, on the night of the raid that sparked the riots, the club was having a party for African-American soldiers returning from Vietnam.
Another goal at all the museums is teaching millennials and other young people to make connections between the past and present. The Wright's curator of exhibitions, Patrina Chatman, a Detroit native who was a teenager during the riots, said art with Black Lives Matter elements mixed with earlier civil rights references reminds young people that "history is repeating itself."

The 5 players who matter most in the AL Central
From young players to crusty veterans, here are the most important players to their team in 2017.
Hello, and welcome back to my series, “A division-by-division tour that allows me to avoid writing daily 1,000-word features that roughly translate to, ‘Look, it’s only April, I don’t know.’” The idea is that these individual players work as a proxy for their entire teams — as these players go, so go their teams.
If you think it’s a stupid concept, note that I selected Jarrett Parker for my pick for the Giants, and both he and his team are struggling. Also, if you don’t like the idea, give me some time. It’s only April. My columns can get better. Small sample.
Anyway, here are the canaries in the coal mine for every team in the AL Central:
Detroit Tigers - Jordan Zimmermann
The Tigers are the Angels in a different stage of the cycle of franchise life. There is no sense in rebuilding, not when Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander are both excellent, not when Justin Upton and Anibal Sanchez are untradeable, and not when Ian Kinsler has the power to demand a contract extension with every trade. This is a franchise that has nothing to lose by giving it the ol’ college try one last time.
Here, look at the cover of their 2017 yearbook:
Exactly. That might be an artist’s conception, but who’s to say in this topsy-turvy digital age? It’s the perfect slogan. The roster the Tigers have built is a roster that absolutely could work. Question mark. Without much of a minor-league system to deal, and with the budget tapped, this is the roster they’re charging forward with. Totally defensible.
In this not-all-in-but-not-even-a-little-bit-out mode, they’ll need some players to do better. Justin Upton, for example. Not sure who thought that would be a good move.
Uh, give me one second ...
Look, it doesn’t matter. Upton was a win-now player with enough youth to be a little win-later, and he’ll need to hit.
The Tigers have other hitters, though. Jordan Zimmermann is who gives them a chance to be the challenger the Indians aren’t really expecting. Now that Justin Verlander has established that he’s still one of the most fearsome pitching machines in circulation, the Tigers have a chance to throw a Verlander/Zimmermann/Michael Fulmer front three at the world, with reasonable options in the fourth and fifth slots.
The catch is that Zimmermann has to be good. He certainly can be. From 2011 through 2015, he averaged 194 innings, with a 3.14 ERA (123 ERA+). That’s not just okay or making do. That’s exceptional. The Tigers were right to prefer him and an extra $100 million to David Price. It’s far too easy to forget how good players were when they suffer one down season.
It’s also far too easy to have one down season stretch into two, and two down seasons turning into three, and suddenly you’re Matt Cain. How Zimmermann bounces back directly affects what the Tigers will do this year. You knew that already, but the difference between 85 wins and 90 wins and a team you don’t want to face in the postseason might be in one player’s hands.
Kansas City Royals - Alex Gordon
The Royals of 2018 will not resemble the Royals of 2015. The three offseasons that will have separated them might as well be geological epochs, slowly but dramatically reshaping the landscape. The beloved championship team will be remembered in t-shirts and posters, bobbleheads and Blu-rays.
And there Alex Gordon will be, waving.
This is the offseason of reckoning for the Royals, with Eric Hosmer, Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas, and Jason Vargas free agents to be. Maybe I didn’t need to italicize the “and” on that last sentence, but you get the point. If the era of contending Royals baseball is going to continue, it’s going to look a lot different.
And there Alex Gordon will be, waving.
What Gordon’s success would do, then would work to soothe the Royals on two fronts. First, it would make them feel better about their 2017 season, ostensibly because he would help them win baseball games and stay relatively close in the AL Central. Second, he would make them feel better about the radical realignment of their entire roster.
“Sure, we have this dented Ian Kennedy, and, wow, totally forgot we signed Jason Hammel, but we also have Good Ol’ Alex. He’ll never leave us.”
The early returns are not encouraging, as Gordon has a 492 OPS. But Hosmer has a 493 OPS, so maybe they’re in some sort of race? Regardless, Gordon’s success is the rare two-way bellwether. He can make the Royals feel better about the present and future. And he can also, well, you know.
Cleveland Indians - Tyler Naquin
The Indians aren’t a perfect team, but they’re devoid of major holes when they’re healthy. The rotation is fantastic. The bullpen is solid, and that’s underselling it. And if Francisco Lindor is a superplayer now, as he appears to be, the lineup will be, uh, super.
The defense is an open question, though. They’re projected to have an above-average defense according to FanGraphs, with a lot of help coming from Lindor, but I’m not sure if that factored in Carlos Santana’s adventures in right field. There will be days with Santana in right and the mending Michael Brantley in right, and defensive stats are lukewarm on both of them, which is a nicer way of saying they hate them. They’ll need a strong defensive center fielder on those days.
So best of luck, Tyler Naquin? He’s miscast as a center fielder in the majors, and it was noticeable in the postseason, with some rough moments coming under national lights. It’s possible that was a hiccup, as he’s logged 322 games in center in the minors, so he’s not exactly learning on the job. Still, the Indians would love to supplement their troika of aces with a waterbug outfield, and that’s not possible. The next option is to have a strong center fielder be the anchor for the entire outfield, and that’s not possible.
That leaves hoping that Naquin can either a) surprise defensively or b) hit enough to make them not care. Austin Jackson will help them feel better every few games, but that doesn’t take the pressure entirely off Naquin. If he’s not hitting or fielding, look for some weird ERAs and W-L records from that vaunted front three. If he’s doing both, the Indians are probably rolling.
Minnesota Twins - You cannot possibly expect me to separate Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton
They are one. They are intertwined by the skein of baseball’s fates, super prospects who aren’t prospects anymore, who could both lead the Twins to unimaginable heights or unthinkable failures.
It’s possible that Jason Castro isn’t Joey Votto now and that Ervin Santana’s ERA will creep above 1.00 at some point, so I’m not sure if they’re likely to keep contending in 2017. If that’s the case, they’ll need both Sano and Buxton to help them feel good about the future. More than almost any other pair of young players on a rebuilding team, the two have the potential to make their team feel great about the future. They just need to play well. Simple!
The situations are different, of course. We already know Sano can demolish baseballs, and that he’s capable of being a perennial All-Star, if not a 500-homer threat. The question is if he can hit enough to allow the Twins to ignore his defensive shortcomings. When Miguel Cabrera gets into the Hall of Fame, you’re not going to hear a lot of “Yeah, but his defense” grumbling. It’s unfair to compare anyone to Cabrera, but that gives you a pretty good idea of Sano’s potential, as well as what he’ll need to come close to if his lack of a true position is never resolved.
Or he could get better at third base and stay there for a decade, making us forget he was ever a liability in the first place. He’s just 24, after all.
Buxton is hitting a distinctly un-nice .069, with 17 strikeouts in 29 at-bats, and while he’s just 23, that’s right around the age where you can’t assume everything will be fixed with additional experience. He’s a defensive titan, so it’s not like the Twins are hurting themselves by running him out there, but they would sure feel better if he proved that he wasn’t somewhere between Joe Borchard and Cameron Maybin on the tools-to-realization spectrum.
If both of them turn into All-Stars this year, the Twins do have a non-zero chance of contending after all. More importantly, though, the future will have a distinct, legible road map.
Chicago White Sox - Jose Quintana
Because if he’s hurt or on the Dallas Keuchel path to enigma town, the White Sox surrrrrrrre screwed up.
Is it too early to worry about that? Of course it is! Two starts, two schmarts. Velocity’s good. He’s still left-handed. A substantial back catalog of excellent starts. I want my team to trade for him right now.
At the same time, this is the future for the White Sox. Once they decided they weren’t going to chase the rainbow dreams of a Chris Sale/Quintana/Carlos Rodon future, they wholly committed to the idea of rebuilding. That idea includes trading someone like Quintana for all the prospects, including that one. They decided to slow-play it, though, possibly because they weren’t enamored of the packages the Astros and Cardinals were offering, which is perfectly understandable and fine.
It’s just a strategy that came with risks. This isn’t a new idea, and the White Sox aren’t discovering these risks right now. But that’s what makes Quintana the easy pick to determine how their 2017 season is going. Because it’s supposed to be a bridge season, anyway. How Quintana does determines if the White Sox are getting steel girders or duct tape for that bridge.
Could you build a bridge entirely out of duct tape? Like, a functional bridge that could handle 40 or 50 cars at a time? In theory, of course. Let’s say this theoretical bridge would have to last only one week. Is that possible? How many rolls would it take?
I think I just ruined my own day.
Anyway, the entire season of White Sox baseball hinges on Quintana being as good as he can be, which would lead to the team getting the prospects who are as good as can get. (Todd Frazier is here, too, just on a much lesser scale.)
