On 9th November 1769 The Fenwick Weaver’s Co-operative Society, the worlds first co-operative association, was founded.
In the Anglocentric education system that most of us older Scots grew up with we were told that the Yorkshire town of Rochdale were first to have a Co-op, this was in 1844. The truth of the matter is that The Fenwick Weavers' Society is considered to be the earliest known co-operative in the world for which full records exist about 75 years before the English claim.
The cooperative movement was born over 250 years ago in a barely-furnished cottage in the East Ayrshire village, when local weavers manhandled a sack of oatmeal into John Walker's whitewashed front room and began selling the contents at a discount.
In Yorkshire a sign on the railway bridge above the A664 leading into the town from the M62 states: "Rochdale: birthplace of cooperation", while the council's website describes the town as the "home of the worldwide cooperative movement", so I made a wee meme gif with the Still Game Neds to put hings right.
The Fenwick societies foundations started 8 years before when on 14th March 1761, 16 weavers met together in Fenwick Church to sign the foundation charter of the Fenwick Weavers’ Society. By signing the document, they agreed to its terms and conditions. These included ‘being honest and faithful to one another’ and to their employers, making 'good sufficient’ work, and setting prices that were 'neither higher nor lower … than are accustomed in the towns and parishes of the neighbourhood’.
The society members promised to pay an admission fee of two shillings and sixpence which was to be used for the good of the Society. Regular contributions to the poor fund were made from these shared investments. As well as offering mutual support to its members, the society aimed to bring benefit to the wider community.
On 9th November 1769, the society agreed that its funds should be used to buy, 'victuals’, or food, in bulk to be sold to members and non-members at a good price. In addition, members enjoyed the privilege of up to four weeks’ credit.
The society funds were also used to buy books and, in 1808, the members established a library for the local community. In the society records, there is also evidence of a form of 'credit union’, or community-based bank organised on co-operative principles. People could borrow money from the communal funds at a fixed rate of interest.
Sadly handloom weaving could not resist the advance of the factories and, in 1873, with only three members left, they wound up the Society. However, their memory lives on, both in the descendants of the Weavers now all over the globe, and also in our great world-wide Co-operative Movement with almost a billion co-operators affiliated to the International Co-operative Alliance.
The Society was reconvened in March 2008 and has been reconstituted as a co-operative, in legal form as an industrial and provident society, in order to record, collect and commemorate the heritage of the Fenwick Weavers.

Frank Turner - 1933 (Visualiser)
"If I was of the greatest generation I'd be pissed Surveying the world that I built slipping back into this I'd be screaming at my grandkids: "We already did this" *
Full Lyrics:
"Stop asking musicians what they think" He said softly as he poured himself a second drink And outside, the world slipped over the brink We all thought we had nothing to lose That we could trust in crossed fingers and horseshoes That everything would work out, no matter what we choose
The first time it was a tragedy The second time is a farce Outside it's 1933 so I'm hitting the bar
But I don't know what's going on anymore The world outside is burning with a brand new light But it isn't one that makes me feel warm Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
If I was of the greatest generation I'd be pissed Surveying the world that I built slipping back into this I'd be screaming at my grandkids: "We already did this" * Be suspicious of simple answers That shit's for fascists and maybe teenagers You can't fix the world if all you have is a hammer
The first time it was a tragedy The second time is a farce Outside it's 1933 so I'm hitting the bar
But I don't know what's going on anymore The world outside is burning with a brand new light But it isn't one that makes me feel warm Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn For the dawn
Aren't you ashamed of this? I surely hope that you are We live in a society that's maybe heading for Mars But down here we still have a shower of bastards leading the charge Outside it's 1933 so I'm hitting the bar
But I don't know what's going on anymore The world outside is burning with a brand new light But it isn't one that makes me feel warm Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

hit tag limit on the last post cos i started talking about roller coasters again 😔
#toy txt post#wish there was a way for me to like. Do. something. with my roller coaster hyperfixation. but im not an engineer i dont want to design them#thats so scary and i couldnt be a ride op cos im scared of riding most of them (disclaimer I KNOW HOW SAFE THEY ARE THATS NOT THE PROBLEM#I DONT HANDLE THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE OF THRILL RIDES FILLING ME WITH ADRENALINE VERY WELL IT CAUSES ME PAIN#i do not enjoy it. but i love to see coasters and watch them and read about them 🥺 and also sometimea i read about. the incidents which#felt like very foolish at first like okay this isnt gonna help me get comfortable riding them but honestly actually it did help?#to see how many of the incidents are like. truly like either freak accidents or someone fucked up#but like the rides safety mechanisms usually are very good and not the reason for an accident. most errors seem to be like. act of god or#like. operator or rider error. and some of the operator errors are kind of terrifying BUT ALSO seem like things that can be prevented#maybe the new wave of unionizing in the us will sweep into theme park employees and make sure theyre paid well and recieve good benefits#and that they are not pressured to prioritize profits or faster throughput at the expense of safety. and (really optimistic i know) maybe#we as a society and culture can unlearn our systemic fatphobia to the point that its doable to turn someone away for being#too big to ride safely without making them feel like shit or like its their fault and MAYBE we'll even possibly just maybe figure out how#to make rides that can actually accommodate larger guests safely so they can participate in the fun without fear or bodyshaming#logically i know theres no way to remove 100% of risk and that there is still heightened risk especially for ppl w various#medical conditions but idk i think we as a society can keep theme parks and do them well. i believe in us.#i should go to more of them....ive been to like. not that many but i do still have favorites#hershey my beloved. i LOVE how visible all the coasters are all the time i LOVE the skyview going right through great bears track#i hope i can go again this yr and see the new wildcat 🥺 absolutely not going to ride that fucking thing but i am definitely going to stare#at it. jenn if youre reading this i cannot fucking believe you got me to ride og wildcat honestly#p sure that rattle gave me a headache and i would not do it again that was a rough fucking ride lol but im glad u somehow got me into that#i have. such a complicated relationship with being peer pressured onto rides lol#like on the one hand i do need that a little bit or i definitely wont do it but on the other. being forced onto comet as a child was#slightly traumatizing and definitely marked my turn from wanting to ride all the coasters to jot wanting to ride anything#to my parents credit on that one they do recognize it as a mistake and were sorry about it like immediately so i dont hold it against them#but also dont. force ur children to ride coasters lol. but i do need to go spend a day at hershey just forcing myself to ride great bear#over and over. fav coaster best coaster. its so fucking loud. its shaped so good. pretty color scheme. its constellation themed#i do love and am obsessed with how hershey packs all those tracks together like that it looks so cool i love to see it#candymonium right at the entrance like that is Extremely distracting very immediately

Some Rochdale Pioneers
One of the many problems that the Rochdale Pioneers faced before being able to open their shop at Toad Lane on December 21, 1844, was the supply of produce. Determined to stifle this piece of working class initiative local politicians and businessman pressurised local businesses to have nothing to do with them, forcing the Pioneers to travel as far as Manchester, some ten miles away, to get…

(b) NP Cares Walk for Financial Assistance to Needy Students: $5,000 on 23 September 2022
Financial Results
The Co-op achieve an unmodified (clean) opinion on the Co-op’s financial statements for the year ending 31 March 2023.
The Co-op had achieved a revenue of $253.8k in FY 22/23 vs $121.4k in FY 21/22 (+109.1% year-on-year). This was attributed to the relaxation of Covid pandemic controls since the first quarter of calendar year 2022 where students and staff could go back to campus freely to patronize the Ngee Ann Shop at Blk 58. Expenses increased from $67.3k in FY 21/22 to $128.0k in FY 22/23 (+90.3%) in tandem with the increased business activity
Other comprehensive income for the year went from a deficit of $0.4k in FY 21/22 to a surplus of $22.5k. This arose from the recovery of business activity back to levels that approximate the pre-covid period.
The Committee of Management continues to actively monitor the ongoing business environment and act in a prudent manner to manage the various risks.
On behalf of the COM, the Chairman thanked all members for their steadfast support to the Co-operative. He also expressed sincere appreciation to our stakeholders such as the current Principal/CEO of NP and President of NP Co-op (Mr. Lim Kok Kiang), Deputy Principals, Senior Management of NP, Director and Head of Estate, Eco and Safety Office.
We look forward to continue to serve members and the wider NP Community for the next term.
