Dance Smash x Cinema: 2/? Hua Xiaoyi x Li Yanchao | The Message

The Message, a 2009 film adaptation of the novel of the same name, is considered by many as the last true Republican spy thriller. Here Hua Xiaoyi and Li Yanchao play the roles of Gu Xiaomeng and Li Ningyu, respectively; two friends (and more, in the novel) in a compromised spy network. You may recognize Hua Xiaoyi as the main dancer from the koi fish number from CCTV's 2024 CNY gala.

Does anyone remember the pawn shop guy pawnman who got in so much drama for numerous things but especially for saying he found a scrapbook of unique photos of the nanjing massacre. Well everyone was right that he didn't find unique photos and that they were reproductions of crimes (in Shanghai) but it seems like the Chinese government still accepted the book and gave him a gift for donating the photos and it seems like he is now appearing in like "I taught a white boy about war crimes against China" type videos. Anyway he was the first white guy in like 28 years to be on the CNY Gala apparently . Insane trajectory

Dunhuang classical style dance "Kalavinka", from 2022 Beijing Dance Academy graduate school graduation. My understanding is that this "Dunhuang classical style" may be in the same vein as "Dunhuang Feitian"/敦煌飞天 style in modern Chinese hanfu, in the sense that they are all modern takes on an older art form. The "classical" here may just mean they took some design elements from Dunhuang murals.

Gotta say I was reminded of the “Thousand-Hand Guanyin” dance from the 2005 CNY Gala performed by a group of disabled dancers. I've seen people share snippets of that dance on western social media, but not many credited it correctly.

Obviously both of these dances have a lot of Buddhist influence. For those who don't know, Guanyin = Avalokitesvara = Kannon. Guanyin/观音/觀音 is the Chinese name for Avalokitesvara, and Kannon/観音 is the Japanese name for the same deity.
