Viking V Makes History on Natural Gas Fuel
Résumé, Winter, 1982
The pace is swift at Western’s Vehicle Research Institute (VRI). Western’s experimental car, Viking V, recently became the nation’s first automobile to travel 145 mph in a measured mile on compressed natural gas fuel. That natural gas fuel is basically the same product many residents use to heat their homes each winter. And Viking V’s speed, although impressive, rates behind a number of other VRI priorities.
Western’s students and technicians were out to prove a simple point when they traveled last month to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats for the annual Speed Week competition. “The main goal of our tests,’’ said VRI technician Bill Green, “was to show that compressed natural gas Is an excellent high performance fuel as well as an economy fuel. We think we made our point.”
Western’s Viking cars have made national headlines in recent years by obtaining up to 94 miles per gallon in cross-country rallies. In those competitions with other colleges and engineering firms, the cars used slightly modified engines running on gasoline or diesel fuels.
Now, under the sponsorship and funding of a Calgary firm, CNG Fuel Systems, VRI director Michael Seal and his crew have designed and developed a carburetor that some day could have service station attendants responding to requests to “Fill ’er up with natural.”
During the Utah tests. Viking V was fitted with a 1500cc turbocharged Subaru engine converted to run on natural gas. Modifications increased the engine’s former gasoline power rating of 70 horsepower to 150 horsepower on natural gas.
“We took advantage of the fact that natural gas has 130 octane, as opposed to conventional gasoline with octane ratings of between 87 and 94,” Green said.
“The car reached a top speed of 145 mph in a measured mile course,” he added. “As far as we know, that is the fastest any vehicle classified as a passenger car has ever gone on compressed natural gas.”
Green said the fuel tank used by the Viking V team was a surplus unit from the U.S. Space Shuttle program. The tank, which weighs only 29 pounds. Is made out of aluminum and wrapped with a super strong synthetic material. He said an equivalent sized steel tank, normally used in gasoline powered cars, weighs nearly 100 pounds.
Now back in Bellingham, the VRI teammates replaced Viking V’s racing motor with a basic 1600cc Subaru engine, but retained the natural gas fuel and carburetion systems.
“We learned a lot of things during our tests that will help us in the natural gas conversions of gasoline powered vehicles,” Green said.
He added that several Northwest firms have fitted their company cars with VRI’s natural gas system to provide the researchers with long-range performance data. It now costs about $1,500 to convert an American car to a natural gas fuel system.
But the natural gas equivalent to a gallon of gasoline currently costs only about 45 cents. At those prices. Green predicted. Western’s natural gas-powered cars will continue their quests for fuel efficiency and economy.

By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING; President Tinubu approves establishment of CNG initiative to boost energy President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians by reducing energy costs. This transformative initiative is to revolutionise the transportation landscape targeting over 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing PMS-dependent vehicles. A statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said that the initiative would also encourage in-country manufacturing, local assembly and expansive job creation in line with the presidential directive. The initiative comprises of a Comprehensive Adoption Strategy and includes the following: Empowering Workshops Programme with Nationwide Network of Workshops and Local Assembly and Job Creation. Tinubu said that these are key points of emphasis of the initiative with an initial focus on mass transit systems and student hubs to significantly reduce transit costs for the general populace in the immediate term. He said that the PCNGI would ensure a seamless integration of CNG utility within the current midstream and downstream energy value chain to support its sustainability. The president said that the PCNGI would facilitate the provision of workshops across all geopolitical zones and states with essential kits and comprehensive training for newly employed staff, thus creating new opportunities for technical skill development and employment. Tinubu added that the nationwide network of workshops, to be established through the initiative, would ensure widespread access and demand side utilisation of CNG technology and CNG-related expertise. This, he said, would facilitate smoother transitions for vehicle owners at the wider benefit of the Nigerian economy. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that under the PCNGI, the following strategic objectives are expected to be achieved: The development of new stakeholder-operated Intrastate Mass Transit systems built on CNG. Adani-Total Gas Ltd to invest Rs 20,000 crore in 8-10 years to expand city gas
Adani Total Gas is looking to expand its network of CNG stations as well as a pipeline network that takes the gas to household kitchens to tap into the country's growing appetite for cleaner fuel.
NEW DELHI: Adani Total Gas Ltd, the joint venture of billionaire Gautam Adani’s group and French energy giant TotalEnergies, will invest Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore in the next 8 to 10 years to expand infrastructure for retailing CNG to automobiles and piping gas to households and industries, its CFO said.
The company retails CNG to automobiles and pipes gas to household kitchens for cooking purposes in 52 licences that cover 124 districts of the country.
It has 460 CNG stations in the country and about 7 lakh consumers of its piped cooking gas.
It is looking to expand its network of CNG stations as well as a pipeline network that takes the gas to household kitchens and industries, to tap into the country’s growing appetite for cleaner fuel.
In the company’s latest annual report, Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) chief financial officer Parag Parikh said the company invested over Rs 1,150 crore in 2022–23 (April 2022 to March 2023) for creating additional infrastructure.
“From a long-term perspective, we continue to be optimistic of gas prospects. There is a larger priority to moderate pollution as gas remains a preferred clean energy source with high user safety, customer trust and delivery convenience,” Parikh said.
The firm is looking at investing more in creating infrastructure and expanding its network.
“For our city gas distribution (CGD) business, we intend to invest around Rs 18,000–20,000 crore in the next to 8–10 years to build infrastructure that widens our customer base and sustains revenue growth,” he said.
AGTL CEO Suresh P Manglani said the firm’s strategy is to fast-track steel pipeline laying and build CNG stations faster across the licenses where it operates for early monetization.
“I am happy to share that your company is going to build over 1,800 CNG stations in the next 7–10 years and committed to connecting every home across all our geographical areas (GAs) desiring to have cleaner and greener piped natural gas in their kitchen,” he said.
Besides scaling core business of gas distribution, the firm has embarked on diversifying its bouquet of choice — CNG, compressed biogas (CBG) and EV charging.
“The time is coming when we will have widened our portfolio of service to a range of clean fuels that address different applications for different consumers, reinforcing our positioning as a one-stop comprehensive service provider,” he said.
India is targeting to increase the share of natural gas, which is less polluting than liquid fuels, in the economy to 15 per cent of its energy mix by 2030 from the current 6 per cent.
And city gas is an area the government is prioritising for this.
He said the government’s move to cap the cost of natural gas will bring stability in prices and prioritise availability to the city gas distribution network.
“This price stability and supply predictability will empower companies like yours to enhance services around this stable pricing and accelerate the country’s fuel preference in line with the stated policy.”
On new opportunities, Manglani said ATGL has formed two separate units for e-mobility and biomass.
“Foraying into the rapidly growing segment of e-mobility, ATGL has formed a wholly owned subsidiary, Adani TotalEnergies E-mobility Limited (ATEL). Presently, ATEEL is engaged in setting up EV charging infrastructure for two, three and four-wheelers (including bus) at various locations across the country”.
EV charging is a natural fit in ATGL’s existing business of CNG retail outlets and is a step towards offering alternative fuel choices to consumers, he said.
ATGL already has 104 charging points at 26 locations across the country.
This it intends to scale it up to over 3,000 EV charging points across the country.
He said the floor and ceiling set by the government for the majority of the gas produced within the country will “ensure a stability in domestic gas prices and get India beyond the gas volatility of FY 2022–23.”
Adani TotalEnergies Biomass Limited (ATBL) is ATGL’s wholly owned subsidiary to tap into India’s huge potential of biomass derived energy.
ATEBL is currently building one of India’s largest Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants at Barsana near Mathura in UP with eventual 600 tonnes per day feedstock processing capacity.
In addition to utilizing agricultural and livestock waste as feedstock, the company is also actively seeking opportunities in the municipal solid waste (MSW) segment to expand its CBG production footprint.
CBG is suitable for transportation and utilization in the CGD network.
“ATGL is at the right place, right time and in the right business to capitalise on economies and generate healthy financials across the foreseeable future,” the CFO said.

More accessible delivery
Shoppers who need more time to get to the door when delivery drivers knock can now let delivery company DPD know via its app.
DPD has added a ‘more time needed’ option for shoppers, who can already leave details of where they’d prefer their order to be left, and ask for a ‘you’re next’ notification.
Elaine Kerr, chief executive of DPD UK, says: “We know some people take a little longer than others at getting to the door, so we’ve now added a specific option to the DPD app, to make it easier for recipients to make the request and make it clearer to our drivers when it is required. Our drivers always get a full breakdown of a customer’s preference before each delivery, but this will help many people, especially those that want or need an in-person delivery.
"This is just the latest addition to the DPD app, which also now enables customers to pinpoint their exact location on a map using what3words. We are always listening to customer feedback and looking for the little things that make a big difference. Asda online shoppers can now return goods to more than 100 retailers including its George.com clothing business when they take delivery of their grocery order. The supermarket is trialling handing back unwanted orders to their home shopping driver – removing a trip to a supermarket or post office – in 48 areas.
The move uses Asda’s toyou parcel network, and means that shoppers can track their package on its return journey to the retailer. Customers simply tell the delivery driver that they have items to return. In return they’ll get a receipt that they can use to track the journey.
Simon Gregg, senior vice-president of ecommerce at Asda, says: “We know that customers increasingly want to be able to access more services more conveniently to better fit in with their lifestyle. By partnering with toyou to efficiently use space available within our home shopping vans, we’re able to offer online grocery customers an additional service that makes it simple to return items purchased via George.com and hundreds of the nation’s favourite retailers.
“With many more of us now shopping for fashion items online, this trial gives customers added value when they shop with us.”

Evri – formerly Hermes – is testing the use of a sustainable fuel made from waste vegetable oil in its diesel vehicles. It says Green D+HVO - a replacement fuel for diesel that is made from waste and residue oils – can be used instead of diesel without any need to modify vehicles. The trial is designed to test claims that the fuel can reduce emissions by more than 90% and to see what volume of fuel is needed.
During the trial, Evri will use Green D+ HVO for its HGV fleet at its Brooklands depot.
David Landy, head of fleet at Evri, says: “At Evri we are currently using CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles for our first mile, client collections and trunking and have been investing in electric vehicles for the ParcelShop fleet (final mile). The middle mile has been the tricky one to get right and we have trialled the 12t CNG and continue to look at that as an option as well as electric vehicles. Green D+ HVO isn’t widely available and there’s a limited supply so it isn’t possible to run our entire fleet from this fuel but, subject to this trial, we believe it will be a viable option to help support our sustainable delivery commitments.”
