10 years ago I wasn't reading science fiction. I found this in a free library by the place I was living at, held together with electrical tape (fixing a book with black tape = baller move) and missing pages. The back copy sounded so bad, I thought I'd be in for a trashy, lazy knockoff dystopia full of half-baked reactionary ideas. I thought I'd skim though it for a laugh. What I got was an absolute mindbender that derailed my reading life for the next decade: a chaotic anarchist (u/dys)topia, an intriguingly ambivalent attitude to violence, pre-60s mindwipe identity psychedelia, witchcraft, mass shootings+terrorism, and a positive-nihilist conclusion... I became pretty immediately obsessed with Kornbluth's simultaneous pro- and anti-authoritarianism, his atypical libertarianism, his flashes of melancholy, his clever careening plots. Far from trash, I had found an idea-packed nightmare that changed my reading habits for years as I searched for something that could touch it. Gonna be posting more capsule reviews here in days/weeks to come so that I can throw out my book journal

C. M. Kornbluth - Not This August (1955) More interesting as an artifact of McCarthyism's red scare than as a science fiction novel, Not This August is an alternate history novel where America is invaded by the USSR and China in 1965 leading to a Pol Pot-like carnival of horrors as well as a well intentioned resistance movement. The book suffers from a lot of stereotypical, often xenophobic and straight-up racist portrayals of Russians and Chinese people, with our "heroes" frequently mocking the invaders in pretty despicable ways, it also suffers from really over-inflating the cruelty of the Communists for no other apparent reason than that they are supposedly evil. Interestingly it chooses to portray American communists not as evil traitors but as well intentioned but naive and dumb people who are the first to be shot by the invading forces. It all reads a bit like a screed, a McCarthyist fever dream that remains of interest as an artifact of the times. The Pride of the Paranoid

In that cesspit of ideology that is Facebook, I came across a post today about the announcement of a former CDC scientist regarding the ineffectiveness of the MRM vaccine.

The rabid idealists fell on this with triumphant cheers and joy - their worldview vindicated, their ideology buttressed against the terrible disease of science and lack of common sense.

One of my friends pointed out that the announcement was a fraud, and directed the crowd of intellectual zombies to a link on Snopes.

Challenged by an opposing ideology, they cried and wailed, dismissing Snopes as the product of a ‘middle aged couple”.

Properly chastened, I’m sure my friend will stop stop using Snopes as a reference. After all, it’s run by a “middle aged couple”.

Could there be anything worse?
