POV: Medidas de Segurança.

Em um local próximo ao farol da ilha de Majak, Soraya Aguirre, a diretora do Instituto Caim, observava com olhar tenso a movimentação dos guardas e oficiais de Selcouth. Carros se aproximavam da orla da praia, onde pequenos botes faziam o transporte deles para a ilha do Farol Abandonado. Desde o domingo da invasão, o acesso ao lugar era controlado de forma modesta, mas nesta noite, foi necessário força maior.

“Diretora Aguirre?” Uma voz chamou a atenção dela. Jorge Guzmán, irmão do guardião perdido e líder de Selcouth, descia de um carro blindado. “Já se passou uma semana. O portal ainda não foi controlado?”

“Temo que os últimos acontecimentos tenham agravado a situação” Soraya acenou para que ele a acompanhasse para longe do movimento. “Pela manhã, recebemos uma neblina incomum para o nosso clima. Hoje à tarde, uma das criaturas atravessou o portal... A situação foi controlada, mas não sabemos se pode piorar novamente. Guzmán, temos que fechar o portal.”

“Fechar!?” O homem a encarou, surpreso com a fala. “Não seja tão ríspida! Esse portal é uma oportunidade para desvendar os segredos de Aravia! Se dependesse apenas de mim, os alunos estariam explorando o outro lado agora mesmo.”

“Explorando?” Foi a vez de Soraya o encarar com surpresa. “Os alunos sofreram um ataque há poucos dias! E agora, coisas estranhas estão acontecendo por toda a ilha, colocando todos em risco. Se nem aqui estamos seguros, temo que os alunos possam não voltar se atravessarem o véu… Seu irmão jamais concordaria com isso.”

O olhar dela era severo como as palavras, mas os olhos de Jorge brilhavam com as possibilidades guardadas no farol abandonado.

“Meu irmão é a maior prova de que é possível sobreviver em Aravia. Pense, Soraya! Se ele estivesse morto, outro já teria herdado os seus poderes.” O homem gesticulava, animado com as próprias palavras. “Eu digo que os enviemos para explorar a região, nada mais!”

Os dois foram interrompidos pela chegada de Makoa Ka’ana’ana, o chefe de segurança do instituto. Sua carranca era ainda mais evidente com o curativo feito no topo da testa, fruto de um confronto com o kuei invasor. Ele acenou brevemente para Jorge Guzmán antes de falar, sem paciência para o decoro exigido pela presença do líder.

“Não pude deixar de ouvir a conversa, diretora. Em hipótese alguma podemos permitir que os alunos atravessem o portal! Não sabemos o quão perigoso é o lugar ou quantos kueis nos esperam lá” Ele parou a fala apenas para gritar ordens aos outros guardas “Tenho homens posicionados na orla e dentro da ilha. Os alunos estarão seguros aqui.”

Soraya acenou em um agradecimento silencioso e Jorge bufou com a petulância do chefe de segurança.

“Não devemos tomar essa decisão sem antes entender os perigos da situação” Soraya completou. “Nossa prioridade deve ser a segurança de todos. Se os efeitos adversos continuarem, não teremos outra escolha a não ser fechar o portal.”

Um som alto ecoou do farol abandonado, chamando a atenção de todos. O brilho do portal ficou mais forte por alguns segundos, antes de se apagar novamente entre as árvores. Jorge olhou uma última vez para os dois, acenando com a cabeça e seguindo de volta para o seu carro. Soraya e Makoa se entreolharam. A preocupação clara em seus olhos.

Jungkook: "I felt guilty. I could already tell she was upset when she walked away, but once she actually voiced her thoughts, I honestly wished Nara hadn't been invited... I know this sounds shitty, but I was devastated about our night being ruined and her feeling this way. I get it. I would, too."

Jungkook: "One of the first things I then did was down a couple shots to replace the guilt by some burning."

In 2017, I shared a compilation of 23 inspirational quotes, from Rachael Ray to Ann Handley to Andy Weir and many people in between. Each of those quotes continues to inspire me and impact the way I think about content marketing

Today, to kick off the new year, the CMI editorial team asked me to share some more quotes.

I’ve been a quote junkie since I was a kid. Some of the quotes I’ve included this year I picked up recently. Others came from the dog-eared journal I started in 1993, which includes gems like this one:

My hope is that you pick up some inspiration from these quotes or think about familiar ideas in a new way.

Maintain your energy

Much of the work we need to do as marketers – and, more importantly, as makers – requires us to think and create. And, quite frankly, there is only so much time we can meaningfully write, develop, or create day in, day out.

Michael Simmons captures the idea perfectly in his article aptly titled An Ambitious Person’s Brutally Honest Take On Work-Life Balance:

“In the world of long-distance running, the idea of someone starting off a race by sprinting as fast as they can until they collapse from exhaustion is obviously stupid. Yet, when it comes to our careers, many of us follow this mentality.

Expert marathoners, on the other hand, purposely run slower than their full potential so they can run longer and actually win the race.  

We need to redefine hard work from how many hours we work in a week (the equivalent of our sprinting speed) to how consistently hard we work over a long period of time.”

And, speaking of marathons, we often hear how content marketing is a marathon, not a sprint, and many articles reference 18 to 24 months as the time frame to build a brand with content marketing. But in the last few years, things have gotten more difficult, and, as  Mark W. Schaefer observes, the journey requires more time:

Maintaining focus is tough, especially when the work required will take months, if not years. But, this insight from Entrepreneur Editor in Chief Jason Feifer plays in mind to help me stay on track:

I don’t want to work nonstop – that only ends in burnout – but I want to make sure I’m using my time as wisely as possible. So I started measuring time in terms of outcome. I’d ask myself, ‘What do I get for this hour spent? What can I show for it later?’  … There may never be time for everything, but there is always time for plenty. It’s just a question of priorities.

While maintaining that focus is an ongoing journey (ahem, struggle), the best thing to get me back on track is unadulterated, pure quiet. I emphasized this idea in my previous quote post, and it’s why I was so mesmerized by this quote from Zen master Ryutan:

Do, don’t (over)think

My business partner, Clare McDermott, and I often talk about the value of “creative abrasion.” I always look to work with people who ask questions, poke holes in my thinking, or otherwise give me a new perspective. While too much friction isn’t a good thing, embrace what Allen calls the conflicting collaborator:

For this reason, I call the ideal person to work with a conflicting collaborator. Basically, you don’t want to collaborate with someone who is so easy to get along with that they don’t push you. The goal is to find a person who will help you discover and overcome your flaws. 

Here’s another reminder why it’s critical to embrace other perspectives:

One of the drums beating loudly this year is eschewing best practices and forging our own paths (and the more varied perspectives you have, the better).

As such, I can’t help but be reminded of this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. (Did anyone else go through a transcendentalist phase in high school? Just me? My quote book is littered with ideas from Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.):

Taking your own path also means having a point of view, which Meera Kothand summarizes in her book, Your First 100. (Meera is a new-to-me content marketer I stumbled upon this year. I’ve really enjoyed her action-oriented emails and books):

This is not to say that we can’t learn from others, but I challenge you to take the best of what you know, apply it, and do you.

Start now, from where you are

This last set of quotes (of which there are quite a few) may be the most important and universal. Own where you are and keep moving forward.

I unfortunately don’t know who said this next gem, but I have repeated this quote numerous times since I heard it at Content Marketing World last year:

“You can’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.”

It echoes these popular Chinese proverbs:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

“Be not afraid of going slowly, be afraid only of standing still.”

And I leave you with this quote from Jay Acunzo who is talking to all of my marketing friends who experience this sense of paralysis because we think our work can be better:

At some point as you bask in the distraction, blurring out your surroundings and the stinging scent of hospitals and disinfectant, it becomes easy to giggle the afternoon away.

Until… those surroundings change.

Until a body walks over the threshold; the first step reverberates in your ears.

You barely need to look up to feel his presence. Like he’s supposed to breathe side by side with you anyway; like your souls are connected, needing to co-exist in near proximity.

An invisible needle pricks different parts of your body, pulling you out of your daydream and into the harsh reality.

A reality where the shiver he elicits doesn’t have to do with affection anymore, but with fear.

Where your heart hammers against your ribcage violently, in the most malevolent way.

Where he isn’t supposed to stand in the same room as you, but ends up doing so anyway.

Fucking cruel.

You blink once, and look up from the cast; the motions of your fingers still momentarily.

It’s not like you didn’t know. After all, Yoongi’s their friend first and foremost — you’re more an intruder who would never see the injured man’s face ever again if it wasn’t for Jimin.

Of course you knew. You expected it.

But facing him facing you, with utmost surprise in his eyes and a tense torso, still hits you with a far worse and vicious pang than you anticipated.

Maybe, somewhere inside, you hoped for it.

But looking at the pain spreading on his face and the hesitant movements, like he wants to run away, makes you want to wish for today’s end.

A butter knife could cut the tension in the room. All eyes flit from him to you and back, then land amongst each other; but yours never divert from his.

And he holds your stare just as well.

One of his hands curls to a fist and releases just as fast. Your eyes witness the tiny movement before they wander up his arm, rushing past the tiger lily, the damn forget-me-nots, and halt when they’re back on his face.

You think that several minutes pass, that your heartbeat stops for an eternity that it’s not supposed to give out for.

But when Taehyung, having arrived with Jungkook, throws a timid greeting into the room, everything becomes alive again.

The slow-motion stops, and the few seconds you lost yourself in give way to casual chatter.

You avert your eyes from him the moment he does, not bothering for a single hello, a friendly how are you.

Instead, you watch Eun walk to the men, only nodding towards Jungkook before she lets Taehyung’s embrace surround her for a moment.

He plants a gentle kiss on her hair. Taehyung’s shy denial that he showcased at the last party has been disappearing bit by bit; he looks comfortable with her now.

You don’t know what they are to each other, but the affection is clear. The way his lips touched her hair… Jungkook would do the same whenever the two of you met—

“Nah, we just came like, fifteen minutes ago,” Eun says, answering a question you didn’t hear. “Rushed here, because he,” she gestures to Jimin, “wouldn’t stop whining.”

“You wouldn’t do the same if, I don’t know, I got hurt?” Jimin defends.

“Oh, absolutely. I’d break your other leg, too.”

Whoever’s in the mood to laugh, chuckles quietly. Jimin complains playfully, “I feel like everyone here just hates me.”

And so on. And so on.

On and on, easy conversations, friends chatting like nothing’s wrong.

And on the other side, him.

You.

The lightning striking between the two of you, even when you’re not looking at each other.

You feel too dizzy to find his eyes anyway; though you can tell that, for at least the first two minutes, his gaze darts back to you every now and then.

You don’t dare to steal a glance until he opens his mouth for the first time, answering a question Yoongi asked and you, once again, didn’t register.

He sounds soft. As though he coated his voice in honey, speaking patiently and soberly. Not with the same enthusiasm you’re used to, and the lack of happiness breaks something in you.

God, of all the ways you had to meet again…

“But, there’s a bell for a reason, right? That woman could’ve used it, and then I wouldn’t be here,” you hear Yoongi complain from a faraway distance; nevermind that his leg is mere inches from your fingertips.

“Or… pro-tip,” Taehyung says, “you put your phone away just once. Just while crossing a street at least.”

Jimin scoffs, and you move your eyes to him, feigning focus with an expression that you’re sure must be transparent. “Oh, he wasn’t crossing any street.”

Yoongi shrugs his shoulders, lowering his eyes in embarrassment as he adds with a pout, “I was walking on the bicycle lane…”

Your lips curl to a weak smile when your friends laugh, barely there, distracted by a chuckle’s sound that obliterates any other snicker. The brief, sneaky glance you finally pluck up some courage for falls on his lopsided smirk.

An ever-constant Jeon-Jungkook-feature.

It makes your chest burn.

It’s been so long since you heard him laugh.

The genuine sound of it brings back all familiarity that the prior silence eliminated. Of when you were the reason for it, a source of happiness, the firmest anchor for him…

Hard to believe he’s the same man who danced with you just a little while ago. Who looked at you like you were the centre of the universe, the oasis to save him from a drought rather than the rain.

Now, he’s not even talking to you.

And you, pathetic and heartbroken, can only reminisce and drown in flashing memories; trapped in the near past without knowing how he’s faring. Repeating the same wish in your head over and over again.

That…

You want him back. All of him.

I already made notes about the fic itself, but I need to take a moment to try and put my admiration and love for your writing in words that actually make sense and aren’t just mindless keysmashes which hardly anyone knows how to pronounce. 😭✋🏻

I’ve always loved your prose because it’s really fucking well put. The way you manage to get into characters heads amazes me and inspires me to try and do the same, because the end result is always (and I mean always) phenomenal. I obviously consume your work as a reader, but there are times where I’ll find myself rereading sentences or phrases or lines of dialogue (hell, sometimes I reread entire paragraphs), because, as a writer, there’s something so beautiful about being able to find the beauties and intricacies in someone else’s work.

Your use of literary devices (metaphors, similes, personification, formatting, sentence length, word structure—the list goes on forever, basically) astonishes me. Seriously. I’ve never encountered an author, published or otherwise, who’s been able to do uniquely and vividly describe emotions and feelings in a way that makes me immediately understand and feel. It’s beyond words. And even when you’re not describing emotions, you somehow manage to paint pictures directly into the meat of my brain, and it’s such a wonderful feeling—as someone with an active imagination but horrible visualization skills, it’s hard to describe the joy (and, truthfully, envy) I feel when I read one of your scenes and find myself easily picturing the environment you put your characters in.

Your dialogue very rarely feels forced or unnatural (and even when it does, it’s mostly due to differences in writing style [because I struggle to switch my writer brain off sometimes]), and your character interaction feels so free and organic I sometimes find myself forgetting that these people (as they are written, obviously) aren’t real. Like. What? How do you do that??

You’re an inspiration to me and probably a lot of others like me, and I really cannot put into words how excited I am to continue reading cmi (which I’ll have to do tomorrow when my phone isn’t about to die 🥹🥹)

you're making me fall in love with you more with each interaction, kate. like, i don't even know what exactly to point out here, bc it'd be a message only consisting of constant "thank you thank you thank you"s :') nevertheless. thank you for perceiving my writing in such a way and finding inspiration and comfort in it.

i so get what you mean when you say you read from a writer's pov sometimes, it's honestly such a motivating thing to do. and 🦋 the literary devices 🥺 so beyond grateful that you feel like i'm able to convey emotions and surroundings well. i really do try my best and it's incredibly nice knowing that, in the end, it's worth the effort 🥺

also the dialogue?! when i tell you i used to struggle with it for literal ages 😭 like, i've only started loving them this year – before that, i was more of a descriptive writer rather than focusing on convos. i found a lot of joy in dialogues this year, and it's so cool to hear it's mostly natural!! (i also sometimes forget they're not real bc i love them so much sjfkhksdfa) i am so freaking excited for you to read on as well, kate. and to see your reactions!! so much to come. thank you and i hope you've been happy and healthy, too 🤍
