So, I’m watching season 6 of Criminal Minds with my mum and sister and we just got to Corazon (6x12) and I actually Cannot Believe that no one in-universe has realised that Reid is autistic. In just that one episode he was:

wearing sunglasses indoors and outdoors because both the sun and fluorescent lights were bothering him and making his headaches worse

sitting in the dark whenever he could

bouncing his foot/leg

holding his hands in almost the “raptor hands” position

alternating between barely talking and infodumping

avoiding eye contact much more than usual

reacting to repetitive noises (indicating oversensitive hearing)

fidgeting with his bulletproof vest to the point where he had to take it off

I mean, seriously. That’s what sensory overload looks like. (In point of fact, it’s almost exactly what sensory overload looks like for me, except I wear a hat rather than sunglasses.) I love this show, but the idea that Reid can work alongside profilers every day and not one of them has ever pointed out to him that he’s probably autistic seriously compromises my suspension of disbelief.

And it’s so obvious that Reid himself has never even considered it. He’s so fixated on the worry that he’s inherited his mum’s schizophrenia that he doesn’t even think to consider that there might be a much simpler explanation. Poor dude. He’d have a much easier time of it if he actually realised what the deal was with his brain.

But nope. Dammit, CM writers, diagnose the kid in-universe already.
