Dezeen's top 10 Chinese architecture projects of 2021
At the end of yet another big year for Chinese architecture, Dezeen's China editor Christina Yao continues our review of 2021 by picking out 10 of the most impressive projects completed in the past 12 months.
Hometown Moon, Tai'an, by Syn Architects
Set in the dramatic landscape surrounding Mount Tai, this ceremonial hall is topped with a semicircular window that reflects on a pool of water to create a moon-like effect when illuminated.
Syn Architects used rock, stone and concrete on the walls and floors of the structure as a nod to the surrounding landscape.

Peach Hut, Henan Province, by Atelier Xi
Named Peach Hut, this tinted concrete community pavilion and bar was designed by Atelier Xi to overlook a field of peach trees in Henan Province.
The building is the first of seven small pavilions that are being built in the region as small community centres.

Yang Liping Performing Arts Centre, Dali, by Studio Zhu-Pei
This performing arts building, designed by Studio Zhu-Pei, has a rectangular roof that spans a landscape of free-flowing indoor and outdoor spaces.
Its undulating outline was designed to mimic the surrounding mountains, while the roof's underside is covered by wooden battens arranged like a bird's nest.

Chapel of Sound, Beijing, by OPEN Architecture
This monolithic open-air concert hall was built entirely from concrete to resemble a piece of natural rock. It was designed by OPEN Architecture to blend into the surrounding mountainous landscape.
The structure is composed of a series of layers, each of which cantilevers out from the previous layer to create an inverted cone shape, with the studio claiming that the resulting good acoustics omits the need for additional sound-absorbing materials.

Shanghai Astronomy Museum, Shanghai, by Ennead Architects
Designed to reflect the shapes and geometry of outer space, the world's largest astronomy museum in Shanghai has no straight lines or right angles.
"The notion of orbital motion and its relationship to time became a primary source of architectural inspiration," explained Ennead Architects design partner Thomas J Wong.

Shanghai Qingpu Pinghe International School, Shanghai, by OPEN Architecture
Instead of containing all of its learning spaces in a single building, the Qingpu Pinghe school features a variety of unusual structures, including a theatre and library known as "the blue whale" (above).
The aim, according to OPEN Architecture, was to find an alternative to the "school-as-megastructure" model. The studio explained that this design concept was informed by the African proverb, "it takes a village to raise a child".

Cofco Cultural and Health Center, Shanghai, by Steven Holl
Sat among rows of identical apartments blocks, this "social condenser" created by Steven Holl was intended to bring the community together by providing a new public space.
The cultural and health centre comprises a pair of concrete buildings punctured by irregular openings.
Holl explained that the use of green space, fresh air and natural light was an attempt to respond to health concerns raised during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Henderson CIFI Tiandi, Shanghai, by Jean Nouvel
Architect Jean Nouvel designed this colourful, covered shopping street with rows of potted plants, linking two main roads at either end.
The thoroughfare references traditional Chinese shopping streets and is punctuated by pedestrian bridges.

Shan-Shui whisky distillery, Mount Emei, by Neri&Hu
Neri&Hu used a modern interpretation of Chinese vernacular architecture for this whisky distillery.
With Mount Emei as a backdrop, its design is intended to celebrate the rural setting and represent the Chinese notion of the duality of natural elements.
Concrete and stone were used throughout the site, while materials like wood and copper pay homage to the history of whisky production.

MAD Unveils Design for Hainan Science and Technology Museum
Where Nature and Technology Meet
Hainan Science and Technology Museum Design by MAD Architects
MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, unveils their design for the Hainan Science and Technology Museum in Haikou City, Hainan. Located on Haikou’s west coast, surrounded by sports stadiums and a National Wetland Park, the museum is MAD’s second major public project in Hainan following the Cloudscape of Haikou, which opened in April 2021. An important science venue and a major tourist attraction for Hainan’s free trade port, the Hainan Science and Technology Museum will break ground in late August 2021 and is scheduled to be completed and open to the public in 2024.
MAD’s design for the museum draws from the site’s dual urban and natural context, one where a “primeval rainforest and technology of the future meet.” Set against the backdrop of a rich tropical rainforest, the museum’s main pavilion is shaped like a cloud in dialogue with nature.
From a distance, the futuristic building appears to emerge from the city, while visitors entering in the museum area witness it floating above the jungle. The museum’s façade of fiber-reinforced plastic makes the building distinctive from both near and afar with its silver, reflective exterior and visionary aesthetic.
Encompassing a total area of 46,528 square meters, the museum will feature 27,782 square meters of above-ground facilities including permanent exhibition space, a planetarium, a giant-screen theater, and a flying theater. The museum’s interior structure consists of three floor-to-ceiling cores, curved trusses, spiral ramps, and a roof, all exposed to achieve harmony between the architectural forms and structural system.
A skylight in the museum’s dome bathes the spacious atrium in natural light, creating a bright and transparent environment. A spiraling, sloping exhibition space ascends from the central hall over five floors, connecting visitors across the museum.
The exhibition experience begins on the fifth floor, where the elevator opens to a 360-degree viewing platform with the sea and cityscape visible in the distance. Visitors on this uppermost floor will begin by exploring the technology and space galleries before proceeding down the ramp to the ocean and life science galleries on the fourth floor, the math and science galleries on the third floor, and the multimedia interactive experience area and children’s playground on the second floor. As visitors travel down the ramp, they can simultaneously enjoy the scenery and the exhibitions, and a gallery running alongside the ramp extends the viewing experience.
Outside, an undulating canopy extends from the main pavilion in all directions to create a space specifically conceived to accommodate the public in Haikou’s humid and rainy climate. The north side of the canopy also hosts the giant screen and flying theater and, in the southwest corner, the planetarium and observatory.
The museum’s various outdoor public spaces, including a crater-like sunken plaza and reflecting pool, offer areas for rest and relaxation. The diversity of the surrounding tropical plants makes this an ideal setting for learning about nature, offering visitors more than simply an exhibition-viewing experience by also providing a pleasant environment to freely enjoy and experience nature.
Once completed, the Hainan Science and Technology Museum will serve as a destination for the exploration of science, technology, and nature, encouraging visitors to seek inspiration from both the urban and natural setting.

MAD completes amorphous concrete library in China
Chinese architecture studio MAD has completed the Cloudscape of Haikou, a sinuous library and waystation that is cast in seamless white concrete on the coast of the Chinese island of Hainan.
The 1,000-square-metre structure, formerly known as Wormhole Library, is the first of sixteen pavilions being constructed in Century Park as part of a wider rejuvenation project of Haikou Bay.
MAD has completed the Cloudscape of Haikou. Photo is by CreatAR Images
Cloudscape of Haikou is distinguished by its amorphous, flowing form, in which the building's interior and exterior are cast as one vessel, without any right angles.
It is punctuated by large curved cut-outs that frame views of the sea, sky and land and allow natural light and air to enter, immersing visitors in nature and the coastal landscape.
It is located in a park on the coast of Hainan. Photo is by AOGVISION
"Spirituality is the core value of architecture," said Ma Yansong, founder of MAD. "It contributes to the humanistic atmosphere of a city," he explained.
"We want the building to be an urban space that people would like to make part of their daily lives. Architecture, art, humanity and nature meet here, and they will open up a journey of visitors' imaginations to explore and appreciate the meaning that different beauty brings to their lives."
The building has a continuous concrete form
The form of the building was achieved using a precise CNC-cut and 3D-printed formwork and double-layered waffle slabs on the floor and ceiling.
All electrics and plumbing are hidden within the concrete cavity to reduce clutter, while bookcases are recessed into the walls.
Large curved cut-outs puncture the structure
Inside, the Cloudscape of Haikou's library is divided into two zones by a large foyer. On one side is the library, while the other is a mixed-use facilities block.
The mixed-use facilities form a waystation for visitors to the park and include a cafe, restrooms, showers, a nursery room, and bike storage.
Bookcases are recessed into the walls. Photo is by CreatAR Images
The library encompasses 700 square metres and includes a reception area, office, flexible reading and event space alongside a children's area with alcoves and an intimate reading space overlooking the water.
These spaces are arranged around a central reading room containing 10,000 books, and linked together by curved sliding doors that retract into the walls.
Cloudscape of Haiko is complete with a large rooftop terrace and a pool and white-sand filled area at ground level.
Some rooms have small reading nooks
The sixteen coastal pavilions that are being constructed along the coast of Haikou Bay are being overseen by the Haikou Tourism and Culture Investment Holding Group and are known collectively as the Pavilions by the Seaside.
Architects and artists including Anish Kapoor, Sou Fujimoto, Thomas Heatherwick, Bjarke Ingels, Kengo Kuma, and MVRDV are also developing structures for the project.
The interior and exterior are cast as one vessel
The Cloudscape of Haikou was one of 10 buildings in our roundup of architecture to look forward to in 2021.
It featured alongside Tadao Ando's revamp of the Bourse de Commerce in France and MVRDV's greenery-lined high-rise building Valley in the Netherlands.
