book ask for the haters: 13 and/or 16?

i'm going to stick with 13 (least favorite books of the year) because i do not have a good handle on what is and is not over-hyped. but okay let's get into it

moby dyke: this book pissed me off so unspeakably badly. it might be my biggest disappointment of the year. the premise of the book is that the author goes on a trip to visit every remaining lesbian bar in the usa, and gets to know the people behind them and et cetera. i can tolerate the fact that it's like 60% a memoir even though she bills it as a queer history thing. i can tolerate her referring to anyone under the age of 40 as a babydyke. what i could not handle was the fact that EVERY CHAPTER was her being like "when i went to indiana i thought they would all be terrible horrible hicks and nobody would want to talk to me... but it turns out... there are lesbians there! :)" like that was the whole book. i was absolutely fucking livid. if you want a book like this, read gay bar by jeremy atherton lin and ignore this horrid fucking book.

the (fake) dating game): i like romance novels and some days i think this is my fatal flaw. a guy gets dumped by his boyfriend and ends up fake-dating a different guy (for some reason?????) in order to get onto a game show that is definitely not supermarket sweep. the fake dating is so shitty because they instantly like each other. the writing is bad. more to the point, they use a cucumber as a dildo, and i do not roll like that.

how are we going to explain this?: i have been reading a lot of environmental nonfiction lately and this book felt like the pinnacle of everything i hate about the genre. it's simultaneously really glib and hugely unhelpful. it's snarky and self-absorbed and not actually interested in serious conversations about environmentalism. it was so goddamn fucking annoying, in the way that leftist nonfiction can be. (in the same vein, nourishing resistance had the same problem; it's about leftism and food activism but it was kind of nothing at all, just a lot of pretension.)

the final revival of opal and nev: i mentioned this in a previous post but actually this might be my biggest over-hyped book. it was mostly just annoying and predictable, both of which are fatal flaws.

tangled up in you: this is hardly the biggest crime on this list, and there are a couple dnfs that i would rank below it, but it's here anyways because it is the most recent book i finished reading. did you know that there is an official disney-commissioned line of romance novels based on disney princess movies. this is the one for tangled and it's not good at all. my favorite part of any romance novel is the reveal that the protagonist was kidnapped as a child and has been living a lie her whole life and my second favorite part is when they go to mount rushmore and talk about land back but also still talk about how much they love mount rushmore

sweet/spicy/savory: as of recently it's been spicy 100%

relationship status: multiple fulfilling relationships of different sorts. betrothed to the revolution since birth.

looking forward to: im going to the desert for christmas with a couple friends!

okay I'll bite. what's the deal with the life series. what's the lore. what's your favorite thing about it. I wanna understand the Posts

huge win for the me community let's go. okay. idk your minecraft knowledge level so i am going to explain as though it's zero bc mine was basically zero when i started watching.

so. the life series (also known as 3rd life, bc that's the first season) is a minecraft survival multiplayer series, which essentially means it's a server where you can die. in fact, it is a death game! everyone on the server has three lives; if you die three times, you're out of the series. your goal is to be the last one standing. additionally, when you're down to your last life, you are expected and honor-bound to engage in pvp and ruin your alliances. your goal is Murder.

there are five seasons out right now with different gimmicks, each one has the same core cast with some changes - essentially it's a bunch of friends who will take any excuse to kill each other, but with increasingly weird and complex political factions and interpersonal dynamics. people are out here swearing fealty. there are betrayals. there are team banners. there's a season where they build a complex net of paths in the sky and drop tnt on one another.

it's one of those things where there is some lore/plot and you can take it as seriously or not-seriously as you want! yay! i for one love to go the "let's take this to its logical horrifying conclusion" route but some people are here for the sillies and that's good too. the fanart game is insane, people are making renaissance paintings and stuff.

anyways, this explanation is a mess, so i will go on to reccing povs, because there are ~15 people in each season and they're all posting videos and that can get overwhelming! there's not really a "right" order but when i started, @charaznablescanontoyota gave me the excellent advice of "start with the winner of each season and then whenever you're curious about something watch that next" - if you like that route and don't mind knowing who wins,

anyways here's the list of winners, the wiki is a pretty good reference to have on hand. HOWEVER. i will also add that everyone has a different style! some people edit things very short, some people do long videos, some people are builders and some are very into the roleplay - i bounced pretty hard off the first pov i watched but switching to someone else worked for me, so in a way having so many options is great bc it means you can shop around, so to speak.

and i will close this out with a few of my personal favorite seasons! just for funsies.

inthelittlewood 3rd life (s1) - probably my personal fave. in which an early game alliance becomes an intensely charged king/knight relationship that they both take WAY too seriously (honorific)

smallishbeans last life (s2) - have you ever wanted to watch someone do a very, very bad job at murdering a lot of people?

pearlescentmoon double life (s3) - in a season where everyone has canonical soulmates, pearl ends up the odd woman out because her soulmate doesn't want to be with her. it is an insane and compelling character arc

ldshadowlady secret life (s5) - diversity win! this woman is so so bad at "what if minecraft were taskmaster"

and as a side note i tend to prefer the tightly edited stuff, so if you know that you Do Not prefer that, i would point you towards ethoslab secret life or grian 3rd life! or tbh still towards pearl double life.

3: what work are you most proud of?

man. several. this is another question i could answer differently a dozen times. right now my answer is: where the world begins, aka the ranchers ghost romance, because i'm really proud of the tone! i think with both ghosts and romance it's easy to get swept up in genre trappings but i am proud of the characterization there AND of the way that it feels pretty grounded. i like that it doesn't have a pure happy ending. i like that i still keep finding pdfs about farm animals that i downloaded ten months ago saved randomly on my laptop.

29: favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

i am going to pass on this one but only because i am planning on bringing back the ancient tradition of going through everything i wrote and compiling a google doc of my favorites. like you know how visual artists do those "my year in review" things. that's my equivalent and i haven't done it in a minute but i'm going to this year. so i'll have an answer. i just don't have one now.

that being said: the dancing scene in the may/ravi/albert fic was a lot of fun. it's not The answer but it's An answer.

30: biggest surprise while writing this year?

what a delightfully open question. i was really surprised by a couple of long fics! actually coincidentally it's the two already linked in the post lmao. each of those fics took the mantle of "longest thing i've written since 2017" like... this year my goal was to be chill as fuck and write for fun and it's cool that writing for fun resulted in a couple 30k pieces that i feel really good about. pleasant surprise!

two of the first things i saw about the life series, which have become surprisingly key to the way i think about it, were a tweet from a friend referring to it as absurdist reality tv and a fic prompt for an exchange that said "do people remember anything between seasons" which is always incredibly fun to me to think about - it's one of those quantum-canon things where the answer to that question is whatever i want it to be

BUT. let me propose to you. what if they don't remember anything from across seasons. each season has a static cast, sure, but with unique relationships and dynamics and even gimmicks that shape the characters. 3rd life scar and secret life scar are both scar, sure, but they don't behave the same way, as a product of both the social dynamics of their seasons And the actual mechanics of the games that they're playing. and that's to say nothing of the way that relationship dynamics can be totally different

my proposal: you have been in a death game. you have lived, or died, in that game. and then you wake up in another one where the gimmick is that you are surrounded by people you know who are actually people you don't know. people who think of you in a fundamentally different way than you think of them. maybe (probably) there's a further game mechanic but idk i'm a character relationships person first and a plot person, like, eighth.

i have a personal list (that i'll probably post in a separate reblog in a second just for kicks) but it's also fun to ask like. let's assume that of all the 18 players, you get one iteration of each person. what is the most iconic skizz, or cleo, or martyn? what happens when you put, for example, double life pearl and last life scott in the same server? how does that shake out? what are the factions?
