Random Fact Thingy- Rebecca    

One thing that I have noticed in my time here on Tublr, is the MUCH, MUCH larger percentage of Rebeccas that I encounter in the Hiddleston/Loki fandom than I do in the real world. It makes me wonder why there are so many of us here. Is is something on a subconscious level? Do we remember reading “Tom Sawyer” as kids and forever have Tom & Becky branded into our unconscious? Is it our tenuous connection to Sigyn?

Yes, the Sigyn connection is there. A million years ago, my catechism instructor gave a several page long description of the etymology of our names to everyone in class, so that we could see how even our names were connected to so many diverse things in the world. I don’t know where the paper is anymore, but I remember it pretty well because it was fascinating. If you have ever looked up your name in a baby book, you know Rebecca (or any of the multiple spellings) is usually just listed as a Hebrew name, is given the meaning Faithful wife and left at that. He went much deeper and gave a list a related or comparable names.

The meaning faithful wife is given precedent to the other meaning, valuable goat, for obvious reasons. Those definitions come from the fact that the word is derived from a verb meaning to tie or bind. The implication being that both a woman and goat needed to be tied up to keep from being stolen or to stay faithful.

In turn, THAT word most likely came from a word from a small tribe that described a specific kind of cord or rope that was knotted and given to a man when a decision was made declaring him the winner of a fight or legal question. In order to have enough of this special rope to use it to tie up his goat or wife, a man would to have a lot of decisions go in his favor. This colors the future words and names with the idea of assured victory.

Take the more specific concepts that are embodied in this name, faithfulness, wife, always victorious and start looking to names that come from other base sources than Hebrew with the same meanings. Sigyn, Loki’s wife and the Norse goddess of faithfulness, whose name means, every victorious girlfriend, manages to float to the top of the list of twin names.

Before you write me off as completely insane and self inserting, let me explain something. My Grandparents lived in a town called Ida. He had a small orchard of Golden Delicious apples. The neighbor’s farm horse was named Mjolnir. So, I grew up with a tendency to look for mythological parallels in life. When I saw Sigyn show up on that report, part of my brain just said ,”Yep. That makes TOTAL sense.”

Feel free to share this with any Rebeccas in your life that may wonder WHY they like Loki (or bondage) so much. It’s right there in the name.

Um...I didn't understand the question so clearly you shouldn't be asking me! What the hell's a head canon?! *stares dumbly*

Head canons are thoughts you might have about certain characters that do not form part of canon but 'usually' make sense considering the character's other attributes.

Can be anything from what kind of breakfast cereal a character might like to events that might have happened in their past that now shape how they act.

And for the life of me now can't think of any 'famous ones' off the top of my head!
