Respect for gordon in the railway series - the part where I cant shut up
Tumblr media
So respect for Gordon is the best HiT era episode this cannot be disputed XD I’m kidding its only my favorite gordon episode, my actual favorite episode is Emily’s New Run (I think thats what it’s called. it’s the one about the black loch) but sadly its not emily day
The last time I made something TVS in the railway series I used Clive Spong’s art style- which sent me into a burning rage in which many of my braincells and will to continue making art were killed
Although respect for gordon is more of a chris awdry story, I was not going to make myself suffer with Mr. Spong’s style again so I instead took inspiration from the John Kenney illustrations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
specifically the first one of Jinty pushing thomas.
Kenneys style works nicely in combination with mine because he likes to detail siderods and add lots of spokes to wheels. his coloring is also very bright and solid and I like the way he highlights smokeboxes. Although he did illustrations for Wilbert’s railway series books… I didnt care I didnt wanna imitate spong again XD Kenneys style is just too much fun
The actual episode doesn’t have any good shots for me to translate into illustrations (unlike the emily one)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are great but you dont have both gordon AND edward in frame… pain and suffering
Tumblr media
so I did A LOT of sketching. This is one of like 4 . I did NOT want to fully detail the sketch and figured I would just do it all in digital
Tumblr media
not pictured: me having a mental breakdown over how gordons boiler is placed wrong and he makes no sense geometrically BUT HEY AT LEAST I GOT THOSE BANGER SIDE RODS
Tumblr media
ending this off with a close up of some children eating jam off the ground that I added last minute
Thank you for reading this post is so full of images that my ipad is running like a bad powerpoint

Get To Know You Tag
Tagged by: the lovely @mariaslozak
Rules: tag 10 people you want to get to know better
Name: Melissa
Sign(s): Gemini
Height: 5’8”
Background for your desktop/phone: Clive Owen on pc, Bei Badgirl ‘Paradise Special’ art show sign on iPad, my cat Milkshakes on mobile
Who was your last kiss: My first kiss in (around) 1996 was my last kiss, lol! I was about 11 years old.
Have you ever been stood up: Once, in high school. I needed a date for my formal and my sister’s friend set me up with someone and he couldn’t get to the first get-to-know-you “date”.
Have you ever been to Las Vegas? Does Bris Vegas count? Actually I think I’ve only ever passed through Brisbane…
Have you ever had a crush on a teacher? Kind of? I don’t know if they’d qualify as full blown crushes, but I really liked my 65+ year old Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in Modern Europe lecturer and possibly also my Modern Europe lecturer, who was (slightly) more age appropriate but it wasn’t as intense.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I don’t know, hopefully not where I am right now!
Coolest Halloween costume: We don’t do Halloween here, but I think my Cruella Deville I once did for my sister’s housewarming party was pretty good (I’d post some pics, but I’m on mobile rn)
Favorite 90′s show: I’m going to be very basic and say The Simpson’s (hey, it wasn’t a pop culture phenomenon for nothing!), but also the Power Rangers. We were obsessed with them as kids.
Favorite pair of shoes: casual, pointy toe ballet flats in a neutral shade. My last pair wore out and I’m currently without :(
Favorite fruit: bananas, apricots and green grapes
Favorite books:
The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons (first read it in high school around 2001. Epic, EPIC love story set in the Soviet Union during World War Two. I’ve lost count how many times over the years I’ve read and reread the Lazarevo section.)
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (current absolute fave. I identify with the second Mrs De Winter on a very close and personal level, it’s almost insulting (considering what happens in the book). Every time I’m in a second hand book store I check to see if they’ve got a copy and at last count I owned 14 different editions of it. Oops.)
Unsticky by Sarra Manning (the rich asshole hero trope in romance novels is not one I like very much, but it’s just so common I still like quite a few of them by default (even Rebecca is one, if you count it as a romance novel (which is very debatable and I have thoughts on this, but now is not the time)) but this is the only one I like on it’s own terms AS a rich asshole hero romance novel. I love Grace and I love Vaughn and I want need a rewrite from Vaughn’s POV and a sequel (although I hate The Bronze Horseman and Rebecca sequels (not written by Du Maurier, but approved of by her estate), so maybe I should just count myself lucky?))
Stupidest thing you’ve ever done: I once tried to break up a guinea pig fight with my bare hands, and when I lifted my hands up again one of those guinea pigs was latched onto my wrist with his teeth. The scar is still pretty prominent even though it’s probably over 20 years old by now.
Tagging: I’m terrible at picking so I’m just going to tag all my mutuals who are still active on here and they can decide whether they want to play along or not (no pressure!) Also, even if I haven’t tagged you and you want to play along, just consider yourself tagged 😊
@judyjetsons @bespectacled-phoenix @sisterfriedes @class-struggle-anarchism @friends-with-stars @w1tchmom @girlpoweranthem @alyesque @spacegirll2005 @aluacrescente @sweetfrosti @pseudo-euphoria @dandelionapril @voxsecundus

Reviews
Tumblr media
A week ago, I reached over to pick up an empty backpack after a night sleeping on a cot. A moment later, I was spitting swear words through my teeth as the muscles in my back felt like they were attempting to change places with each other.
In that week, I have spent more time not moving than I have spent in the whole rest of this year. So, just because nobody asked for them, here are my reviews of all the things I’ve watched, read, and done while unable to do just about anything else:
Books:
Star Wars Books:
Last Stars - Way good. It’s essentially a love story with space ships blowing up and stuff, following childhood BFFs that eventually love each other and then fight on different sides of the war.
Blood Line - The best Star Wars book I read. Just well written with characters that were easy to care about and some really thoughtfully done critique of polarized political debates as well as the idolization of horrific pasts.
Aftermath Trilogy - Yes, all three of them.  These were good. It felt a little like a Clive Custler novel or something like that. A group of scoundrels with good in their hearts traveling around and punching people in the face who suck at stuff. By the third, it is legitimately messed up and digs more into loyalty vs. fanaticism. One time, just one, there’s a side chapter that stars Jar Jar Binks. It is the most obnoxious thing that has ever happened.
Other Books:
American Street (by Ibo Ziboi) - This book was beautiful, just gorgeously well written with masterfully drawn characters. This was the best book I read, probably the best book I’ve read since The Children of Blood and Bone.
How Schools Work (by Arne Duncan) -  I have thoughts. I’m writing a whole piece about it.
TV and Movies:
Mindhunter -  FBI guys interview serial killer guys. Super good.
Extinction - Aliens blow everything up. Dude shoots his way out. Awful. Just, really freaking awful.
The Signal - Idiots follow a signal, end up trapped and there are aliens and everything is crazy.  Pretty good. Way better than Extinction, which was awful.
Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee - I watched just about all of them. Often, while watching, I would say to myself, “well, this is delightful.”
Youtubers (generally listened to from the iPad across the room that my daughter was holding, or on as background on the TV while she was drawing). In the Venn Diagram of “Youtubers” and “People who are not the worst” the circles do not touch. I hate Youtubers. I’m worried that they are in her head too much, but also, it’s not like we can go for a walk. Ok. I kinda like The Odd 1s Out.
Other Random Stuff:
Pokemon Go - Less fun when you can’t walk.
Socializing -  I did not do this.
Social Media - Depending on my mood in the exact second, it was either great and helped me feel connected and stuff, or just sucked and I hated everything. So… my experience with social media did not change in the slightest.
Muscle Relaxers - Yes.
Racism - I spent a lot of time online, and my god. White people are super super pissed right now, and they can’t be quiet about it. They are shouting, sometimes in the same posts, that we all need to ignore Race and they just don’t see it and also that they are really upset when people of color are doing well. Or they are talking about Democrats “buying” the votes of Black people through Welfare. Whether it’s the comments sections, twitter, or the actual, real world, everyone’s racist uncles took the summer off and won’t shut up. I’m hoping this is a “dead cat bounce” sort of thing, the last gasps of a dying way of thinking.
My Daughter’s Art - She’s been drawing and doing stuff all summer, and she’s getting super super good. Every time she finishes a piece and shows it to me, I’m blown away. I remember, before she was born, thinking about the fact that at some point there would be this new human that would make things that had never existed before, that would have original ideas and stuff. Now, on her way to turning 8, she’s doing it, and it’s the most beautiful thing. She even started an Instagram, @junipermysticvlogs_art .  She will draw pictures of your cat for a small fee.
Back Pain - I’ve given this one a lot of thought.  Sure, this week has forced me to slow down in a way that I am generally terrible at doing, to the point that I sometimes just went and laid down on my porch without a book, phone, or computer, and just listened to whatever was happening in the world.  Still, in the end, I’m going to have to give back pain a big thumbs down.
