Clifton Observatory by Truus, Bob & Jan too! https://ift.tt/B386kuh Bristol, England. Bob and Jan went on holiday to South West England. Clifton Observatory, located on Clifton Down atop the Avon Gorge, offers unforgettable views of Clifton Suspension Bridge and the surrounding area. A historic site with a fascinating past, Clifton Observatory offers unique tourist attractions, including one of the only working Camera Obscuras open to the public in the UK, and access to the legendary Giant’s Cave. Built on the site of a Celtic Iron-Age fort, the Observatory was originally constructed as a snuff mill in 1766. The mill was later leased by William West, a photography and engineering enthusiast who was a member of the Bristol School of Artists. West saw the potential in the ‘picturesque ruin’ and converted it into an Observatory. He installed several telescopes and a range of other astronomical resources and instruments, including the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura offers a unique view of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Avon Gorge. From a dark room atop the tower, visitors can experience what is sometimes nicknamed ‘Victorian CCTV’ – a remarkable feat of Victorian engineering which still fascinates and astonishes people to this day, almost two centuries later. UC 49.25 - Manchester vs Trinity, Cambridge
The fact that this blog is going to be written entirely in character as the narrator of the novel Ducks, Newburyport, the fact that you’re probably going to have to look that up if you don’t know what it is otherwise you’ll have no idea whats going on, the fact that Manchester and Trinity have seven UC titles between them, the fact that there’s no reason for me doing this other than the fact that I’m reading that book at the moment and its constantly running through my mind, the fact that here’s your first starter for ten, Starter for Ten, James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, cabbage patch, the fact that Manchester are mascotted by a bee and Trinity are mascotted by some sort of homeknitted Sooty, the fact that I’ve already said here’s your first starter for ten so I should probably start, the fact that Webber wins the first points for Trinity with ‘Capital’, following a list of clues, though I’m not sure which one he got it on, the fact that I never am when there are lists of clues for questions, but I suppose its probably often some combination that sets off a light in the contestants heads, Eureka! Topeka, Toto, lions, the fact that the first set of bonuses are on scientists, Dorothy Hodgkins, the fact that I remember hearing her name in lectures but can never remember what exactly she did, the fact that the first bonus question asked for a specific vitamin, the fact that when a question on University Challenge asks for a specific vitamin its nearly always B12, K12, the fact that no one really knows any other specific vitamin, so its pretty obvious the answers going to be B12, the fact that Rogers negs the next starter, but can’t even guess, even though he knows the answer will be a city, the fact that thats a bit mean of me to say, isn’t it, the fact that its probably really hard to think of something in that situation, the fact that Trinity can’t get it either so Manchester get a reprieve, the fact that Moscow was known as the third Rome, the fact that I’d never heard of the third Rome, let alone heard of it being Moscow, the fact that Crawford buzzes in very quickly when she hears the words ‘potato-eaters’, Vincent Van Gogh, Goch, Go, Goff, the fact that the next bonuses were on EU treaties in the week that Brexit finally happened, the fact that there’s no way they could have known this to schedule it like that, the fact that they’d have had to know ahead of time that Brexit would be postponed in March, October, December, the fact that they couldn’t have known that, the fact that it must have just been pure chance, the fact that Crawford wants Webber to guess a five letter word for a question that asks for a four letter word, the fact that he doesn’t, the fact that what if his spelling had been wrong, the fact that I am 100% sure the answer for the PIcture starter is Bavaria, but its also a guess, the fact that Webber says ‘educatory guess’ not ‘educated guess’, the fact that is that also right?, the fact that Manchester finally get a question right, the fact that they’re already 75 points behind at this point, the fact that Hughes gets the next starter to put a stop to their comeback, the fact that Hughes really does get a lot of starter questions, the fact that Trinity don’t get the author of ‘The Children’s Book’, but I know its AS Byatt, because I have a copy of it in my flat which my grandma gave me but which I’ve not read because it looks unspeakably boring, the fact that I’d probably never have heard of AS Byatt if I didn’t have the book, the fact that there’s loads of authors I’d never have heard of if I didn’t have their books, the fact that most of the time I need to have read about a book to know things about it, but I know stuff about films that I’ve never seen, apparently by osmosis, the fact that I should read more, the fact that I’m trying, but Ducks, Newburyport is just so damn big, the fact that its still really good though, the fact that I’d recommend it to anyone, the fact that this homage probably isn’t painting it in a good light, the fact that I assure you Lucy Ellmann does a better job of this than I do, the fact that Webber also gets a lot of starter questions, the fact that Trinity don’t know a lot about astronomy, astrology, solar flares, sun spots, Griffiths observatory, Palomar observatory, Jodrell Bank, the South Bank, London Bridge, Tower Bridge, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Hogwarts Express, the fact that the next question is about trigonometry, the fact that I’d have known that when I was studying trigonometry but its a bit of a pointless question to have here, the fact that Webber gets it anyway, the fact that they get two bonuses on the architect Owen Jones, Chavs, chavs, the fact that that stands for council housed and violent, the fact that its widely regarded that thats actually a backronym, the fact that it apparently derives from the Roman word ‘chavi’, meaning child, the fact that who was using Roman words to coin new terms in the 21st century, the fact  that there are no chavs in Harry Potter, the fact that do you get wizard chavs, the fact that David Bowie is the music starter, the fact that David Bowie was probably a wizard, Ian Dury, the Blockheads, hit me with your rhythm stick, the fact that Trinity don’t recognise Joni Mitchell, the fact that Joni Mitchell is probably the best singer-songwriter ever, the fact that is it just me who thinks that, the fact that Trinity know novels from their opening passages, the fact that I used to know the start of Northern Lights, the fact that I used to know the chapter titles for that too, the Decanter of Tokay, the fact that I also used to have the opening page of Barack Obama’s autobiography memorised, the fact that it was in the bathroom for months, the fact that Paxman says ‘You are on fire tonight!’ after Trinity get the novel questions, the fact that he’s absolutely right, the fact that they are very much on fire, the fact that Manchester haven’t had a look in for ages, the fact that they have a guess on the next starter, but they’re wrong and Crawford picks it up, the fact that Paxman says ‘you can give the scientific or the common name’ for a genus of hoofed mammals, the fact that who knows the scientific name for a genus of hoofed mammals but not the common name, the fact that the answer was goat, the fact that is there anyone on earth who knows the word ‘capra’ but doesn’t know the word ‘goat’, the fact that they just put that in the question to make the show seem more intellectual don’t they, the fact that I hadn’t noticed that before, the fact that they quite often say ‘give the scientific or common name’, the fact that are Manchester ever going to get another question, the fact that the third bonus question on adaptations is ‘the Turn of the Screw’ and I swear I’d been thinking of the Turn of the Screw for the first one even though it had no link to it, the fact that thats just a total coincidence isn’t it, the fact that Manchester have finally got another one, the fact that hopefully they can get up above fifty points, the fact that anything below fifty points seems like a truly dreadful effort, but if you can get just above that it seems almost respectable, the fact that Green gets the next one too, two in a row, hattrick, connect four, the fact that they get all of the picture bonuses too, the fact that this puts them over fifty, the fact that Green gets a hattrick with an excellent early buzz of ‘aubergine’, the fact that Paxman says ‘good buzz’ and it was, the fact that where was this form earlier, the fact that if this had come in a bit earlier then they might have stood a chance, the fact that Green goes for four in a row on the next starter, but gets it wrong, the fact that Hughes gets the next one, the fact that he’d been quiet for a while but you can never count him out, the fact that Booth gets his first of the night, the fact that Manchester nearly have a hundred now, the fact that that really would have been respectable, Jurassic, Cretaceous, Mesozoic, Triassic, the fact that in Trinity’s last episode Hughes guessed Palmerston for a Prime Minister question and if he’d guessed that again they’d have been right again, the fact that Trinity are running away with it again, the fact that they have already got the highest score of the series so far, the fact that will they hit three hundred, the fact that they only need ten more points, the fact that Hughes buzzes in with ‘martlet’ and they’ve got it, the fact that it was his seventh starter of the match, the fact that Trinity scored three hundred, the fact that Manchester scored ninety five, the fact that its the highest combined score we’ve had in two years, the fact that Trinity still have to win another match to reach the semi finals, the fact that Manchester aren’t kncked out yet either, the fact that I don’t know who’s playing next week, the fact that every time I pick up Ducks, Newburyport I think ‘how did she write this’ and having done this now I am even more amazed, the fact that this goes into nowhere near the amount of detail she goes into, but I have no clue how she manages it, the fact that it must have been a pain to edit, the fact that if I really wanted to copy the style I’d have had to put a huge list in at some point, but that might have been too annoying for this blog, the fact that I might go back and add a list anyway, the fact that I don’t know how she ends the book so I might just have to end it here because I don’t know how I’ll get out otherwise

Cincinnati Has Never Topped Records Set In The Deadly Heat Wave Of 1934
It was the hottest day in Cincinnati history, during the hottest week in Cincinnati history and that torrid record still stands, 85 years later.
The summer of 1934 was a hot one all around the United States, but the focus of the heat – as if a magnifying glass was aiming a blistering sunbeam at us – was the Ohio Valley around Cincinnati. A couple of days in June topped the 100-degree mark, but the real inferno started around July 18 when the mercury ran above 94 degrees. Next day, it was 98.6, setting a record for July 19.
On July 20, Cincinnati meteorologists put 104.8 degrees into the record book. For the next seven days, Cincinnati’s official temperature topped 100 degrees every single day, setting records never since exceeded.
In those pre-air-conditioned days, the city was totally unprepared. Cincinnatians began dying at an alarming rate, some succumbing to the heat as they slept. Not only was the daytime heat unbearable, the night time offered no relief. On July 21, 22, and 23, the highest low temperatures for those days were recorded – all around 80 degrees.
Tumblr media
Few locations offered any sort of relief. According to the Enquirer [21 July 1934], the public pools in the city were worse than nothing at all:
“A blazing sun, on top of the excessive heat, sent thousands in search of relief. Swimming pools and beaches were thronged for most of the afternoon. The children in playground wading pools around the city were not so fortunate. The shallow water was quickly heated by the sun and became unbearable.”
People jumped into their automobiles, hoping to generate some cooling wind, but the heat caused accidents when drivers lapsed into sleep as the scorching air wrapped around them like a suffocating blanket.
“When Mrs. Retta Burns, 32 years old, 4225 Thirty-first Street, fainted yesterday, the automobile she was driving crashed into a parked car in front of 2963 Linwood Road. She was not injured. Police said the excessive heat probably caused Mrs. Burns’ collapse.”
Tumblr media
At night, some people abandoned their houses altogether, dragging pillows to the nearest park. Those who stayed home lay on sheets that felt as if they had just been ironed. According to the Cincinnati Post [21 July 1934], no one got any sleep:
“Indoor temperatures remained in the 90s, and, between fitful snatches of sleep, most people spent the night in search of a breath of air. Many tried to sleep on porches. Walking through the streets of the congested residential areas downtown late at night one could hear muffled voices of sleepless inhabitants coming from darkened windows.”
On Sunday, 22 July, the Enquirer announced that Cincinnati, while setting an all-time highest temperature of 108.5 degrees on Saturday, had been the hottest location east of the Mississippi River. That Sunday, Cincinnati would reach its second-highest recorded temperature at 107.7 degrees. Those two days remain the hottest in Cincinnati history.
In addition to the temperature, Cincinnati set records in heat-related deaths, with as many as 40 fatalities recorded on some days. People died at work, at home or just standing on the street.
Electric fans proved useless in these astronomical temperatures, doing little more than moving hot air around. The city’s acting health commissioner, Dr. Owen C. Fisk, had nothing to offer other than a suggestion to ignore the heat. According to the Post [21 July 1934]:
“First he advised Cincinnatians to quit looking at thermometers. ‘Keep cool mentally as well as physically,’ he said.”
Every little degree counted and was leveraged as marketing. With mobs flocking to swimming resorts, the Cincinnati Zoo offered faint hope via the Cincinnati Enquirer [23 July 1934}:
“The Cincinnati Zoo claimed the distinction of being one of the coolest places in town with a recording of only 100 degrees at 3 o’clock as against the official recording of 107 degrees at the Clifton Observatory at the same time.”
The Gidding Company advertised that it was Cincinnati’s only “all air-conditioned store.” An optometrist advertised air-conditioned fitting rooms. Railroads offered air-conditioned cars for out-of-town trips. Conspicuously absent from the list of air-conditioned places were movie theaters, which had not yet caught the trend for “store-bought air.”
Throughout the week, reports trickled in from farms in the outlying areas. One farmer after another reported crops past saving, dried up in the unrelenting meteorological furnace.
The suffering Midwest, including Cincinnati, made the front page as far away as Los Angeles, with heat-focused headlines cheek by jowl with the news that bank robber John Dillinger had been shot outside a Chicago movie theater. Nationwide strikes by workers in several industries also claimed headline space, but the heat won out.
Finally, a thunderstorm on Thursday, 26 July, dropped the temperature from 100 degrees to 75 degrees within an hour, and the whole city rejoiced. Well, almost. By the end of the heat wave, Cincinnati’s health department had recorded 139 heat-related deaths and thousands of cases of heat prostration. Temperatures for that week averaged 105 degrees.

UK 2019 Day 3: Redcatch Park, SS Great Britain, Clifton Observatory
UK 2019 Day 3: Redcatch Park, SS Great Britain, Clifton Observatory
Tumblr media

May 11, 2019
I had forgotten how much longer higher latitude days are in Spring. Even before the March Equinox arrives, the long twilights running up to dawn and lingering after sunset make for extended daylight. I was up early on our third day to checkout the local park.
Redcatch Park [map] is just a quick walk away from our flat (I’ve always wanted to say that! A flat!)…

Favorite LA spots for food/fun
I had to sit and think about this for a bit because I don’t…like…do anything usually lol. I go to work and come home and lock myself away, tbh.
-I love the Huntington Library. It’s an art museum with a large public garden. I love to go in the spring when everything is blooming.
- The Getty Villa features Greek and Roman art. The whole building is designed after a Roman villa. It’s on a cliff overlooking the beach. The Getty Center is also great and has a nice mix of styles.
- Record shopping at Amoeba
- Heritage Square Museum is a lot where they’ve moved a bunch of historical homes to one area and you can go tour inside all of them. In late October they do their Mourning Tours where they reproduce an entire Victorian Funeral (complete with costumes and an actual casket) and you can go watch and get a daguerreotype taken of yourself. I’ve never been. I’ve been saying I was going to go for the past 3 years.
-Movie screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. They’re playing Beetlejuice next month, I’m trying to talk my friends into going.
-Seeing movies at the old movie palaces like the Chinese or the Egyptian (The Egyptian mostly just does premiers or festivals now and fucking Netflix is trying to buy it which would fucking ruin it I’m sure).
-If you come around Oscar season, at FIDM they have an exhibit of all the costumes from the movies that have been nominated that year. It’s free.
- It’s changing due to gentrification, but Magnolia Blvd in Burbank has basically been Goth Town USA for the past 10 years. Lots of antiques like the Bearded Lady and the Mystic Museum, 3 Halloween Town stores (open 365), a bookstore called Dark Delicacies (they’re moving a few blocks away and Guillermo Del Toro helped raise money for their move), and cool coffee shops.
-Group night hikes up to the observatory
-I’ve talked about it before, but I just like hanging out in the canyons. They’re secretive and have a bohemian, rock n’ roll history. But there are waterfalls too and caves to explore.
- I don’t actually go out to eat that much, but I like getting ice cream from Little Damage (black ice cream in a black cone makes my goth heart happy) and coffee from Rad Coffee (I get a Dracula which is a blood red velvet flavored iced drink).
-Clifton’s bar and lounge. It used to be a restaurant. It’s 3 levels and full of taxidermy. There’s a giant fake tree going from bottom to the top level and a church pulpit for no reason. It’s just quirky and cool.
- The Edison bar. The building was the original Edison power plant in LA. Very 1920′s industrial vibes inside.
- Le Petit Four in West Hollywood is probably my favorite restaurant in all of LA. Little french place. Everything on the menu is great. I like going and sitting outside and having dinner around sunset time. Feels like a little slice of Paris in LA.
That’s all that I can think of for now
