Funny, and yet not. We can all avoid a lot of frustration and wasted time if we think outside of our own knowledge and remember to ask really basic questions such as, "And what program are you looking at this in right now where it isn't what you want? What other programs are open?" A bit of respectful, thoughtful, detective work can make your client feel less "DUOH!" and more in control of their little successes.
