How protective are you with the books you collect and do you have any tips for keeping them in good shape? Or do you not worry too much about wear and tear because you , like those who fold over pages to keep their spot and write in the margins to take notes? I

I try to keep my books in really good shape, and I especially go out of my way to take care of the more collectible books -- older first editions, autographed books, etc. Since I usually get so many books when they first come out in hardcover, I like to buy a bunch of dust jacket protectors in bulk to have on hand. I love the slip-on plastic sleeve covers from ClearBags and the more traditional fold-on Brodart covers. I'd say that 60-70% of my hardcover books now have some sort of dust jacket protector on them and they really do wonders for keeping the books in good shape.

I definitely don't fold over the covers while I'm reading or bend pages to keep my spot. I have roughly 18 million bookmarks ready to be put to use at a moment's notice. And I DEFINITELY don't write in the margins or keep notes in my books. I think I've shared this before, but I go pretty crazy with Post-It page markers that I stick in areas of interest or on specific parts that I want to remember or use later. My books pretty much all look like this:

When I'm at my best and most organized, the page markers are coordinated by color for various subjects or specific things I'm making note of. But I'm not usually at my best, so most of the books just look like they are shooting rainbows out of their pages.

how do you get started on creating a zine ? im really interested in making one but i have no idea what to do

if you mean like an online fandom zine, it can be a really daunting project! what's really helped me is having experience as a guest artist in over a dozen fanprojects over the years, so i have a decent idea of what a well-organized project looks like. so, i would recommend first trying out for a couple of zines first and seeing the process from the perspective of a participant, before trying to organize one yourself!

if you already have experience as a participant, my go-to guide is this one made by one of my favourite artists and project mods!

i basically try to follow everything in this guide from the top-down! my personal preference when organizing projects is to have a smaller mod team (usually myself and a friend) because i'm too scatter-brained to delegate tasks efficiently and i'm masochistic enough to enjoy doing unpaid labour by the truckloads. so, depending on your matrix of neuroses, a mod team of people you know intimately and trust is also really important to begin with!

otherwise, i think J puts everything in better terms than i can with regards to making zines. there are a few manufacturers that i've worked with and recommend that are not on this sheet, but they're specific to Canada/North America and might not be as convenient for you. those companies are Copywell, Jukebox, Vistaprint, Clearbags, and AliBaba for packaging goods!
