joostbakker: In 1868 the government decided to protect the Dandenong Ranges for its unique flora and fauna, hard to comprehend it is a 300 million year old forest.
During the Gold Rush and boom time it was a popular spot for day trips and weekends away, only 50 kilometres from central Melbourne.
During the first Melbourne depression of 1892/93 it was decided to open up the national park up for clearing and settlement ‘to create jobs’
Thousands protested and thanks to them that’s when the National Park was permanently protected (although it was reduced from 22,000 acres to just 2000 acres.
This weekend we took the Efron brothers @zacefron @dylanefron through this incredible forest, they loved it!
Last year when I was in California I was excited to finally see the worlds largest tree, a 2,500 year old tree the General Sherman.
Also in a protected forest and standing next to it was Dylan!
Couldn’t believe it, we met when they filmed @zacdowntoearth
I told Dylan about this little forest at the time - it was great to take them through.
Our National Parks, go and enjoy them!

Editing Research 'Just A Man'
Norsemen:
‘Norsemen’ (2016) The series is written and directed by Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen. This series is set in the year 790 in a fictional Viking village named ‘Norheim”. The series parodies the stereotypes of Viking culture with a modern curveball. A blend of raw and brutal historical aspects of Viking culture with contemporary comedy. Edited by Rodrigo Stoicheff. The series incorporates anachronistic humour in the stories of each episode through comedy pacing editing to allow for deadpan humour and awkward silences.
In an article by the Guardian on Norsemen, Julia Raeside states, “Norsemen owes as much to Monty Python as it does to Asterix and Game of Thrones. A bunch of brilliantly talented Norwegians have made this ludicrously lovely sitcom in English (they made a Norwegian version, too) so that we may access their dry-as-a-bone humour more easily.”
I looked into interviews with leading comedy editors and was able to find an interview with co-editors of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Shelly Westerman and Payton Koch.
When talking about having pre-existing relationships with directors as an editor Shelly Westerman states:
“We talked during pre-production and throughout the shoot, all of which gave us much more insight and clear direction.
Oftentimes we meet a director via email, we say hi on a Zoom meeting, and then we don’t talk again until the Director’s Cut. Having that previous relationship and feeling empowered to talk more freely throughout pre-and-post production absolutely made the work much better.”
It is important for an editor to have a strong relationship with the director as it directly impacts the cohesion of the final project. It is crucial that both director and editor have a shared vision through creative alignment with the editor and director having multiple meetings to fully understand the overarching emotional arc of the film. To do this, it is also vital for effective communication between both the director and the editor. This can be done to tackle problems that may come up during the construction of the edit. It is also helpful for the editor and director to trust one another, allowing the editor creative freedom in storytelling.
Ja’mie Private School Girl
The editor for Ja’mie Private School Girl is Ian Carmichael, who is known for Thunderstone (1999), True Story with Hamish & Andy (2017) and Border Protection Squad (2015). Ian currently works at Hibs Edit Design in Greater Melbourne and has over 30 years of experience as an editor in Australia. According to Ian's LinkedIn, he started out editing television commercials and moved on to work at various large post-production houses in Australia and abroad. Having seen his LinkedIn, I want to begin applying for editing houses or possibly try to work on TV advertisements as I enjoy these sorts of editing styles rather than narrative fiction. However, my experience in narrative fiction film editing, I believe, is crucial to understanding story structure and purposeful editing in works such as advertisements or documentaries. I have ordered books on both Documentary editing and film editing as a whole from authors such as Edward Dmytryk and Ken Dancyger. I wasn't able to find much on the editing of Ja’mie Private School Girl, but I did find an article on the creator of the show, Chris Lilley, in which it is stated:
“Long-time Lilley fans will be familiar with Lunatics’ format, which uses a mockumentary style to interview these quirky, self-delusional characters and follow them about as their pie-in-the-sky aspirations collapse under the weight of reality. Mix in some rude gags — think gender-fluid dogs, dildos attached to drones, and a clothes store called My D!ck — and you have the Lilley formula in a nutshell.”
In ‘Just A Man’, I would like to incorporate the deadpan comedy style of the works of Chris Lilley, such as Lunatics or Ja’mie Private School Girl, through ‘self-absorbed’ characters whose lives and dreams unfold in absurd and comedic ways. I feel that it is important that we incorporate the use of handheld camera shots to mimic real documentary-style filmmaking to create a real feeling of the subject despite the fact that Desmond, the main character, is a puppet. To accompany these shots, we have already discussed creating talking head interviews with the sock puppet of him breaking the fourth wall, which will provide insight into his inner thoughts and highlight his self-delusions. The comedic effect will be created by cutting directly from these interviews to footage of his break-downs or even fighting with the cameramen.
Fleabag:
The series ‘Fleabag’ written by Phoeber Waller-Bridge
In an article titled “Breaking the Fourth Wall: Fleabag,” the author ‘Mrunal’ explores how the protagonist’s (fleabag, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) direct engagement with the audience serves as a narrative device to reveal her internal struggles and emotional journey. This technique not only offers insight into her psyche but also fosters a unique connection between the charavter and audiences.
The editor of both seasons of Fleabag is Gary Dollner who was awarded an Emmy and an ACE Eddie for his work on season two of the show. In an interview with editshare.com it was found that:
“He credits Waller-Bridge for writing an intro for season two that starts at a full-blown sprint, breathlessly delivering just enough backstory to get everyone up to speed before plunging into an episode that’s a thrill despite taking place almost entirely with the characters seated in a restaurant.”
Opening episodes, such as pilots and season premieres, are problematic because they involve significant setup, which can affect the story’s momentum. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s season two introduction of Fleabag was highly effective, starting at a rapid pace that quickly established the necessary backstory before diving into an engaging, restaurant-based bottle episode. The episode was designed to feel claustrophobic, with complex interactions among characters sitting at a table. Editor Gary Dollner tightened the pacing, keeping the delivery brisk to enhance drama and comedy. Dollner focused on keeping all character interactions and expressions balanced, likening it to “spinning plates” to ensure no relationships or reactions were neglected. Dollner appreciates dialogue overlap for authenticity, creating a natural flow. He used this technique in the dinner scene to keep conversations energised and realistic, even adding overlap where it didn’t naturally exist. Quick-cut editing maintained the episode’s energy, aligning with Waller-Bridge and director Harry Bradbeer’s overall vision for pacing and rhythm.
With this in mind in terms of editing, it will be useful to begin with a high-energy opening that will immediately set the tone and essential backstory. It will be good to introduce Desmond with quick, punchy scenes that establish who he is and his current situation, pulling the audience in quickly without extensive exposition. If there are scenes with multiple characters in confined spaces, edit to create chaos. Like Dollner’s “spinning plates” approach, ensure that all character dynamics are visible. Highlight non-verbal communication—glances, smirks, and eye-rolls—so that these subtleties add layers to the humour and relationships without verbal explanations. Integrate quick reaction shots to punctuate jokes or significant moments. This editing choice keeps the audience engaged by showing a variety of reactions and maintaining the scene’s energy.

Window Tinting in Melbourne: A Comprehensive Overview
Window Tinting Melbourne is a popular home and commercial enhancement in Melbourne, offering a range of benefits from increased privacy to energy efficiency. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of window tinting in Melbourne, including its advantages, types, and installation considerations.
Benefits of Window Tinting
Enhanced PrivacyWindow tinting provides increased privacy by reducing visibility from the outside while maintaining clear views from within. This is particularly beneficial for homes and offices situated in busy areas or on ground floors. Tinted windows prevent prying eyes from seeing into your space, offering peace of mind and security.
UV ProtectionOne of the significant benefits of window tinting is its ability to block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. This protection helps in preventing sun damage to your skin and reduces the risk of skin cancers. Additionally, it protects your furniture, flooring, and other interior elements from fading and deterioration caused by UV exposure.
Energy EfficiencyWindow tinting can contribute to energy savings by reducing heat gain and loss through windows. By blocking a significant amount of solar heat, tinted windows help keep indoor spaces cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter. This leads to reduced reliance on heating and cooling systems, resulting in lower energy bills.
Glare ReductionExcessive glare from the sun can cause discomfort and strain on your eyes, especially when working or driving. Window tinting reduces glare by filtering out intense sunlight, creating a more comfortable and visually pleasing environment. This is particularly useful in workplaces with large windows or in vehicles where glare can be distracting.
Improved AestheticsTinted windows enhance the overall appearance of a building or vehicle by giving it a sleek, modern look. Available in various shades and finishes, window tinting can complement the architectural style of your property and add a touch of sophistication.
Types of Window Tinting Films
Dyed Window FilmDyed window film contains a layer of dye that absorbs solar energy, reducing heat and glare. It offers a basic level of privacy and UV protection. While it is cost-effective, dyed films may not be as durable as other types.
Metalized Window FilmMetalized window film includes tiny metallic particles that reflect solar heat and improve durability. It provides better heat rejection and increased privacy compared to dyed films. However, it may interfere with radio signals and can have a mirrored appearance.
Ceramic Window FilmCeramic window film is a high-performance option that uses ceramic particles to block heat and UV rays. It offers superior heat rejection without affecting visibility or signal reception. This film is durable, scratch-resistant, and provides a clear view with minimal distortion.
Hybrid Window FilmHybrid window film combines the benefits of dyed and metalized films. It offers enhanced heat rejection, UV protection, and durability while maintaining good visibility. Hybrid films are a versatile choice for both residential and commercial applications.
Installation Considerations
Professional InstallationWhile some DIY window tinting kits are available, professional installation is recommended for optimal results. Experienced installers ensure precise application, minimize air bubbles and wrinkles, and adhere to local regulations. Professional installation also guarantees that the tinting meets quality standards and performs effectively.
Legal RegulationsMelbourne has specific regulations regarding window tinting, particularly for vehicles. Ensure that the tinting meets legal requirements for visible light transmission (VLT) and other standards. Failure to comply with regulations may result in fines or the need to remove the tinting.
Maintenance and CareProper maintenance is essential to extend the lifespan of your window tinting. Regular cleaning with non-abrasive products and avoiding harsh chemicals will keep the film looking pristine. Additionally, avoid rolling down windows for a few days after installation to allow the film to set properly.
Cost FactorsThe cost of window tinting varies based on factors such as the type of film, the size of the windows, and the complexity of installation. While high-quality films and professional installation may have a higher upfront cost, the long-term benefits and savings make it a worthwhile investment.
Conclusion
Window tinting in Melbourne offers numerous benefits, including enhanced privacy, UV protection, energy efficiency, glare reduction, and improved aesthetics. With various types of window films available, you can choose the option that best suits your needs and preferences. Professional installation ensures that the tinting is applied correctly and meets legal standards. Whether for your home, office, or vehicle, window tinting is a practical and stylish enhancement that enhances comfort and functionality.

How Can Paint Protection Help Preserve Your Car’s Resale Value?
When it comes to maintaining your car's resale value, a well-preserved exterior can make a significant difference. One of the most effective ways to protect your vehicle’s paint job is through paint protection.
But what exactly is paint protection in Melbourne, and how does it help in preserving your car’s resale value? In this blog, we'll explore the benefits of paint protection, the different types available, and why investing in it is a smart decision for any car owner.
What is Paint Protection?
Paint protection refers to various treatments and coatings applied to a vehicle's exterior to shield it from environmental damage and wear. These coatings form a protective layer over the car’s paint, safeguarding it against factors like UV rays, road debris, and chemical contaminants. There are several types of paint protection products available, each with its own set of benefits.
Types of Paint Protection
Wax Coatings
Wax is one of the most traditional forms of paint protection. It provides a shiny finish and a basic level of protection against water and UV rays. However, wax needs frequent reapplication, typically every few months, and offers limited resistance to scratches and other forms of damage.
Sealants
Paint sealants are synthetic products designed to provide a longer-lasting protective layer compared to wax. They offer excellent resistance to UV rays, water, and chemicals, and can last up to six months. Sealants are easier to apply and maintain than wax, making them a popular choice for car owners.
Ceramic Coatings
Ceramic coatings are a more advanced form of paint protection. Made from silicon dioxide, these coatings bond with the paint to create a durable, hydrophobic layer. Ceramic coatings offer exceptional protection against scratches, UV rays, and chemical contaminants. They also make the car easier to clean and maintain. A well-applied ceramic coating can last several years, providing long-term protection for your vehicle.
Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Paint Protection Film, also known as clear bra, is a transparent film applied to the vehicle's surface. This film is designed to absorb impacts from road debris and protect against scratches and chips. PPF is highly durable and can be professionally installed to cover high-impact areas like the front bumper, hood, and side mirrors. It’s an excellent choice for those who want maximum protection without altering the car’s appearance.
How Paint Protection Preserves Resale Value
Maintains Aesthetic Appeal
A car's appearance plays a crucial role in its resale value. A well-maintained exterior with a glossy, scratch-free finish will attract potential buyers more than a vehicle with a faded or damaged paint job. Paint protection helps preserve the car’s original shine and colour, ensuring it looks as good as new when it’s time to sell.
Protects Against Damage
Environmental factors such as UV rays, acid rain, and road salt can cause significant damage to a car's paint over time. This damage can lead to fading, discolouration, and corrosion, all of which negatively impact resale value. Paint protection creates a barrier against these elements, reducing the likelihood of such damage and maintaining the car’s overall condition.
Reduces Maintenance Costs
Cars with paint protection in Melbourne are generally easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, grime, and stains are less likely to adhere to the protected surface, and regular washing becomes simpler. This ease of maintenance means the car will remain in better condition, which is appealing to prospective buyers and can lead to a higher resale value.
Prevents Costly Repairs
Addressing paint damage can be expensive, particularly if it involves professional repairs or repainting. By investing in paint protection, you reduce the risk of such damage occurring in the first place. This proactive approach can save you from costly repairs and ensure that the car remains in prime condition for resale.
Enhances Vehicle Longevity
Paint protection contributes to the overall longevity of your vehicle. A car that has been well cared for and protected is likely to have fewer issues and a longer lifespan. This extended longevity can be a selling point for buyers, who may be willing to pay a premium for a vehicle that has been meticulously maintained.
Final Words
Investing in paint protection in Melbourne is a wise decision for any car owner looking to preserve their vehicle’s resale value. Whether you opt for wax, sealants, ceramic coatings, or paint protection film, each type offers unique benefits that contribute to maintaining your car’s appearance and condition.
By protecting your car’s paint, you not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also safeguard it against damage, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent expensive repairs. Ultimately, paint protection is a smart investment that can help you get the best return on your vehicle when it’s time to sell.

Why You Should Go For Car Window Tinting
There are many shades and types of tint available, from limo dark to nearly clear. Certain place has different laws and regulations regarding visibility, so do some research on the legal limits in your area before choosing your shade. No doubt Car Window Tinting Melbourne fits everything as per your need with abiding by the set of rules and regulations.
Window tint also makes it more difficult for people to see into your car, which helps deter theft. It can also help prevent fading of upholstery from sun damage.
UV Protection
If your car’s interior isn’t properly protected, UV rays can cause materials like leather seats to fade and crack over time. Window tint blocks harmful UV rays and keeps the interior of your vehicle looking new, even after years of sun exposure.
Tinted windows also protect passengers in the event of an accident, by keeping glass from shattering and reducing the risk of injuries caused by flying shards of glass. In addition, thieves are less likely to target vehicles with tinted windows, because it’s harder for them to see what is inside the vehicle.
Window tints are available in shades ranging from limo dark to nearly transparent. Each has a different VLT percentage, which determines how much visible light is allowed into the cabin of the vehicle. We recommend consulting with our window tinting professionals to find the best solution that maximizes UV protection while staying within local laws.
Heat Control
Depending on the type of tint, it can disperse up to 60% of solar energy and 97 percent of heat-producing infrared radiation. The result is a vehicle cabin that stays cool and comfortable, and it can reduce the wear and tear on your air conditioning system.
Car window tint also protects you and your passengers from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer. Prolonged exposure to UV rays is known to accelerate skin aging and can cause the fabric of your upholstery to fade over time.
Some types of tint offer a clear, transparent look while others are dark. A popular choice is crystalline window tint that uses nanotechnology to create a film that’s nearly invisible but still blocks the sun’s heat, visible light, and harmful UV rays. It’s also nonconductive, so it doesn’t interfere with GPS, radio signals, cell phone use, or tire pressure monitoring systems. This is the best option for those who want protection without a noticeable dark tint look.
Increased Privacy
The sun’s UV rays cause interior materials like seats and dashboards to fade over time, but tint prevents this from happening and keeps the inside of your car looking new. It also helps reduce glare on the road, which makes it easier to drive in harsh sunlight.
Window tints make it more difficult for people to see what’s inside your vehicle, making them an excellent deterrent against smash-and-grab thefts. Thieves are less likely to target vehicles they can’t see their belongings in, especially those with dark tint that blocks out a lot of light.
Choosing the right level of tinting is important, as many jurisdictions have laws on the amount of darkness that can be applied to a window. Additionally, window tint must be carefully applied to ensure it lines up perfectly and is smooth with no creases or bubbles. For this reason, hiring a professional is recommended to get the best results. They will be able to help you choose the correct level of tint based on your needs and local laws.
Aesthetics
A lot of people invest in tinted windows for aesthetic reasons. Car enthusiasts feel that their ride isn’t complete without the dark glaze. However, tinted windows also make the vehicle cooler and reduce light glare while driving.
Tint offers a degree of privacy as well, keeping prying eyes from looking in the interiors. This is especially useful for protecting personal belongings that may be in plain view. It will also discourage opportunistic thieves from breaking into your vehicle, as they won’t be able to see what they can steal.
Tint is a scratch resistant thin film that adheres to the surface of the window. It is available in different colours and shades to suit your vehicle and taste. It is important to get a professional tint job as improper application can cause bubbles and stains. A reputable shop will measure and cut the tint according to your window’s dimensions and follow the local car window tinting regulations.
Be it your vehicle, home or office, the importance of window tinting is felt everywhere. You need to communicate with the right professionals in Melbourne to get everything done now.

The Ultimate Guide to Tinting Your Car Windows in Melbourne
Tinting your car Window Tinting Melbourne offers several benefits, including privacy, protection from UV rays, heat reduction, and improved aesthetics. However, it's important to choose the right tinting service to ensure a professional installation and adherence to local regulations. Here is the ultimate guide to tinting your car windows in Melbourne:
Research Local Tinting Laws: Familiarize yourself with the local tinting laws and regulations in Melbourne. Each state and territory may have specific rules regarding the allowable Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage for different windows. In Victoria, for example, the front side windows must have a minimum VLT of 35%, while the rear and back windows can have any level of tint. Make sure the tinting service you choose adheres to these regulations.
Understand Tinting Options: Learn about different types of window tint films available. The most common options include dyed film, metalized film, carbon film, and ceramic film. Each type offers different benefits in terms of heat reduction, UV protection, glare reduction, and durability. Consider your specific needs and preferences to choose the right tint film for your car.
Choose a Professional Tinting Service: Look for professional car window tinting services in Melbourne with a good reputation and experience in the industry. Read reviews and testimonials from previous customers to gauge their level of expertise and customer satisfaction. A professional tinting service will have skilled technicians and high-quality materials to ensure a precise and durable installation.
Request Samples and Demonstration: Ask the tinting service for samples of different tint films they offer. They should be able to provide you with samples that allow you to see how the films will look on your car windows. Additionally, ask for a demonstration of the tinting process, including how the film is applied and the expected results. This will give you a better understanding of the process and the quality of work provided by the service.
Inquire About Warranty: A reputable tinting service should offer a warranty on their workmanship and the tint film itself. Inquire about the duration and coverage of the warranty to ensure you are protected in case of any issues or defects. A warranty indicates the confidence the tinting service has in their work and provides you with peace of mind.
Discuss Tinting Options and Preferences: Consult with the tinting service about your preferences and specific needs. They should be able to guide you in choosing the right tint film based on your desired level of privacy, heat reduction, and UV protection. Additionally, discuss any additional features you may want, such as a clear or colored film, to achieve a customized look.
Schedule an Appointment: Once you have chosen a tinting service, schedule an appointment for the installation. Check the expected duration of the installation and plan accordingly. It's advisable to choose a time when you can leave your car with the service for a sufficient period to ensure proper installation and curing of the tint film.
Care and Maintenance: After the tinting is complete, the tinting service should provide you with instructions for care and maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure the longevity and performance of the tint film. Avoid rolling down the windows for a specific period recommended by the tinting service to allow the film to fully adhere.
Know the Limitations: Understand that window tinting is not a one-size-fits-all solution. While it offers several benefits, it may have limitations depending on factors such as the type of glass, the condition of the windows, and the climate. Discuss any concerns or questions you may have with the tinting service to manage your expectations.
Enjoy the Benefits: Once your car windows are tinted, enjoy the benefits of enhanced privacy, reduced heat, glare, and UV rays.

Protecting Your Investment: How Car Paint Protection Adds Value to Your Vehicle
When you invest in a car, it's more than just a mode of transportation; it's a statement of your style and a reflection of your personality. You want to keep your vehicle looking its best for years to come, and that's where paint protection comes into play.
In this blog, we'll dive into the world of paint protection in Melbourne and explore how it can add value to your beloved automobile.
What is Paint Protection?
Paint protection is a method of safeguarding your car's exterior paint from various environmental hazards, such as road debris, UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and more. It's like a shield for your vehicle, preventing these elements from damaging the finish and ensuring your car maintains its sleek and shiny appearance.
The Importance of Paint Protection
Preserve Your Car's Resale Value
One of the significant benefits of paint protection is its impact on your car's resale value. When you decide to part ways with your vehicle, a well-maintained exterior can make a substantial difference. Buyers are more likely to pay a higher price for a car that looks like new.
By investing in paint protection in Melbourne, you can help retain your car's factory-fresh appearance, ultimately adding more value to your investment.
Protection Against Environmental Elements
Every day, your car faces a barrage of environmental elements that can wreak havoc on its paint job. UV rays can cause fading and discoloration, while bird droppings and tree sap can lead to unsightly stains. Road debris like stones and gravel can chip or scratch the paint.
Paint protection acts as a barrier, shielding your car from these potential threats. It's like an insurance policy for your vehicle's paint.
Types of Paint Protection
There are several options available when it comes to paint protection. Here are some of the most popular choices:
Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Paint protection film, also known as clear bra, is a transparent, adhesive film applied to your car's exterior. It's virtually invisible, providing a protective layer without altering the appearance of your car. PPF is highly effective in guarding against rock chips, scratches, and other minor abrasions.
Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied to the car's paint. It chemically bonds with the factory paint, creating a hydrophobic and durable layer. This coating is excellent at repelling water, preventing contaminants from sticking, and offering UV protection. It also adds a brilliant shine to your car, making it look as if it just rolled off the showroom floor.
Wax and Sealants
Traditional wax and sealants are temporary solutions compared to PPF and ceramic coatings. They require more frequent reapplication, but they can still provide a good level of paint protection. Regular waxing can enhance the shine and offer some protection against minor scratches and UV rays.
Maintaining Your Paint Protection
Investing in paint protection is only the first step. To reap the full benefits and ensure that your car continues to look its best, you need to take proper care of the protection applied. Here are some tips to maintain your car's paint protection:
Regularly wash your car to remove dirt, grime, and contaminants.
Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning products that can damage the protection layer.
Keep your car parked in the shade or a garage to reduce UV exposure.
Periodically inspect the paint protection for any signs of damage or wear and tear.
Conclusion
Your car is more than just a means of getting from point A to point B; it's an investment. Protecting your investment with paint protection Melbourne is a smart move that can pay off in the long run. Not only does it preserve your car's resale value, but it also shields it from the daily assaults of the environment.
Whether you choose paint protection film, ceramic coating, or traditional wax and sealants, taking care of your car's exterior is a surefire way to maintain its value and keep it looking fantastic for years to come. Don't wait – invest in paint protection and let your vehicle shine!

Famed for his large-scale installation artworks in abandoned or "hold-out" houses around the world, Strange planned "an installation and art project with the house in its final days" in December 2021.
The plan involved installing a 27-metre-wide LED light screen as a backdrop to the projections and to light up the house for a one-off, 20-minute performance, accompanied by a score from American musician Trevor Powers.
The work was filmed and photographed for future exhibitions, with the sole live performance of the work shown to a group of around 40 former residents, including the Cukrovs....
..."We've had a couple of teary conversations about what's happened in the home and memories of his mother and his father working in a market garden out the back and the large Yugoslav community that was here and how they as a family watched this area sort of grow up and then slowly disappear as well."

B Daniela Frangos broadsheet.com.au
A vacant 1970s-era brick home sits in solitude on an abandoned Perth street – one of the last remaining signposts of a once thriving suburban township. Suddenly, it’s lit up in stark monochromatic colours, before being plunged into darkness to reveal only the barren landscape around it.
The fluorescent spectacle is a major new work, Dalison, by renowned Perth-born artist Ian Strange. It premiered on Saturday at The Naval Store in Fremantle – one of the artist’s last ports of call in WA before he returns to the United States after a stint as AGWA’s guest artistic director – before it shows interstate and overseas. The project is a continuation of Strange’s global body of work exploring home, displacement and suburban isolation.
A 2019 work, Untitled Light Intersection, saw Strange skewer two adjoining buildings in Melbourne with piercing beams of light. In 2021, he did the same with a dilapidated terrace house in Sydney.
His latest subject is 20 Dalison Avenue, Wattleup, in Perth’s south. What was once a bustling outer suburb with market gardens and a school is now an eerily isolated setting: a neighbourhood that’s been slowly erased – residents uprooted and more than 300 homes demolished – since it was earmarked for industrial redevelopment by the West Australian government. Number 20 – a domestic holdout recently vacated by the Cukrov family – is one of just two houses remaining in the area, due for demolition soon.
“Holdout homes are something that happens across cultures, across history around the world,” Strange tells Broadsheet. “In China you have ‘nail houses’ … in Australia we have The Castle and Darryl Kerrigan refusing to move ... and in Chernobyl there were people living there right until the invasion from the Russians currently. So there’s huge instances of people who, in spite of these great external circumstances, have deep-rooted connection to a place or, for many reasons, decide to stay and hold out in a place.”
The impermanence and instability of home feels like a particularly weighty subject at a time when so many Ukrainians have been forced to flee – or fight to protect – theirs. And scores of people up and down Australia’s east coast have had to evacuate homes that are now under water.
“I’m interested in universal and shared connections to the image of the home,” says Strange. “These are places we tend to project with a sense of stability but are often more vulnerable and temporal than we would like to think.”
The Wattleup residence first caught his eye in 2015. “It was such a striking image – this clear holdout house with, at the time, green lawn, and everything else around it was completely gone,” says Strange. “When you look around the neighbourhood there are driveways and footpaths still there, but no houses except this one, and everything’s overgrown except this one.”
Late last year, the artist secured a six-week lease to the empty property at 20 Dalison Avenue, breathing temporary life back into it through a large-scale light and sound installation using a stadium-sized LED screen and programmed theatre lighting.
“The idea of the project was to build this large-scale screen that would allow us to cut the house out of the landscape with light, to experience the home in shifting states of visibility: either silhouetted, isolated in darkness, or revealed in its vast, empty context,” says Strange.
He calls the work “a eulogy to the home”. “It’s such a stark image when you see this lone house, super vulnerable, and this big, wide expanse … it’s almost symbolic of the emotional circumstance of the owners. It’s a visual metaphor of the state of the home and its literal vulnerability.”
The striking installation was viewed live on-site by a group of around 40 former Wattleup residents, including the Cukrovs. And it’s been documented with an 18-minute film work and four photographs – the surviving record of the temporary installation – that will tour interstate and then around the world.
The lighting is choreographed to an 18-minute composition by Idaho musician Trevor Powers – formerly Youth Lagoon – who recorded the score in isolation on the other side of the world. “His music has this melancholy to it, but it’s deeply human,” says Strange. “It captures this sort of mournful moment.”
