THE CRAFT OF ACTING: A STAR WARS EDITION

As much as we’d all love to think Star Wars is actually a bunch of people fighting in a galaxy far far away.. It’s, of course, a purely fictional series amplified by it’s amazing fan base, but real people portray a story that is more then fake to them. Becoming the part of your role takes a wild imagination and hard work, but it is the duty of the actor to become the character, to adapt the character, but they aren’t the ones who created the character. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the creation of the storytellers themselves, like George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, and the creative team at Lucasfilm. There is only so much an actor can do to create a genuine and appealing role to the general public; the rest is up to the individual who gave that character life.

The craft of acting is a rewarding, but extremely tedious career to walk down. It’s full of disappointments, rejection, and failure, but only the strong and talented or just the plain lucky make it in the industry. As a person who has dabbled in the arts of acting myself, I’ve been shown the lifestyle they live, but most of all the hate they receive. It’s a truly disgusting situation watching hard working men and women pour their hearts out only to told that they disgraced their character. Which brings me to my first infuriating discussion on Hayden Christensen and his role as a young Anakin Skywalker in Stars Wars prequel series. Was it truly his portrayal as Anakin Skywalker or did George Lucas set him up for failure since the beginning?

As a full believer in the saying- “The teacher is only as good as the student.” it is to be said that George Lucas taught the young Hayden a thing or two about how he wanted Anakin to be perceived by the audience. Maybe that was a bad judgement call on Lucas’ part? An actor’s main goal to do as the director says. If Lucas told Hayden to jump, you better believe he would of jumped until he was told to stop. Anakin was a young and foolish Jedi from the start, it is who he was meant to be. A power hungry individual whose childhood left him unhappy regardless of what he accomplished.. he wanted more. I believe Hayden nailed his demeanor as George pictured it, especially since George was there watching his every movement, every feeling Hayden needed to feel to best fit the scene. Episode II: Attack Of The Clones, the first episode introducing a older Anakin also first introducing Hayden to his role, showed a huge character advancement. A much angier but still very immature Skywalker told the story of Love, Pain, and confusion. Shmi Skywalker’s death brought one of the most genuinely painful scenes Christensen could have given us. His emotions tore a hole straight through my heart, but it was still not good enough. It seems that Hayden played that scene too emotionally to some, which is blasphemy! If is as if people expect Anakin to have the demeanor of Darth Vader out of the womb..Now where is the character development in that? We’d see a very two dimensional character which would not explain why he turned to the darkside. We’d be left with more questions then we started with, or at least I would! I will admit in some scenes, they could of been acted a lot differently by Hayden. That’s where I blame George Lucas, he failed Hayden Christensen in some parts and that is only Lucas’ fault. I’ve followed a lot of Christensen’s work in years before the prequel trilogy, where he has given very complex roles that he gave so much to. For example, Christensen’s role as Clay Beresford in his 2007 film, Awake with co-star Jessica Alba. He tells the story of a man who remained awake after put under to have a heart transplant, who then later finds out his bride is in cahoots with Clay’s doctor to kill him and collect the insurance money. I believe it was one of his best roles, that he showed such physical and emotional pain. It takes a truly great actor to make me feel such a powerful connection to a character and Hayden did nail it! In conclusion, I firmly believe Hayden’s talents are there.. but it was George who failed him and US!

Let’s fast forward and hit our newest Star Wars episode a little! You know I wouldn’t be writing it if I didn’t find some way to throw E7 in my writing some way. Since it’s release, I’ve drown myself in more content then I have since I was young, but there is just something about the new Episode that I cannot escape. Maybe it’s the excitement that Star Wars is back, or the fact that one of my favorite actors played my new obsession since Anakin/Vader. You guessed right, Kylo Ren! But this part isn’t only about Kylo Ren, but the man who brought him to life.

Upon announcement that Adam Driver would be playing Kylo Ren, my heart exploded. I could hear fireworks and a chorus singing in the background of my thoughts, leaving me in utter joy. I’ve followed Driver since his debut role in the hit HBO series ‘Girls’ and let me tell you, I fell in love from the very beginning in 2012. His awkward attitude and unconventional good looks solidified the deal. His acting style was very method-like, living in the characters non-stop which made for such a convincing role. My first time seeing TFA was very exciting time, not only having something I obess over come back, but seeing the new actors gave it such a fresh feeling. I especially was amazed by Driver as Kylo. I could see what Abrams and Kasdan were trying to go for in his character. Someone very real and humanized, but of course with good reviews came the bad ones. The hate he received was just so uncalled for. They targeted his looks, which is just down right wrong. Hate the character, but do not bash the actor. Kylo Ren was Driver’s break-out role, so ignorant people automatically assume that with every future character he will play, it’ll be exactly like the our Kylo Ren! IDIOTS! It’s called ACTING! A rumor started amoungst the Harry Potter fandom that Adam Driver is wanted to play the role of a young Professor Snape, which I believe Adam would nail, but I had a few friends give their atrocious opinions which left me scratching my head.

This was the post I saw from a dear friend on mine after she had re-shared this post from me on Facebook. Our conversations about Star Wars: The Force Awakens have always been her making fun of Kylo Ren. I get it! Everyone has their own opinions on different characters and that is perfectly fine, but one thing you do not do is compare an actor who has brought such influential and vivid characters to life, to a actress who hasn’t always made the best of her roles. I respect Kristen Stewart enough to say that she is a strong individual for enduring being the butt of everyone’s jokes constantly. I refuse to call her acting bad even if that is the case because she has her own acting method and it works for her! Clearly, she hasn’t been completely horrible because she’s landed some pretty impressive roles in big budget films in her career and even continues to do so. She fits in someone’s story and in my opinion, that’s all that matters as an actor. Getting back on topic to the treachery my friend has bestowed upon my Facebook feed. Adam Driver probably cries in his own time or when his role calls for it, but as far as to say that he would cry the entire time while playing Snape is just… so idiotic! Unless of course, you come to find that Snape has been recaptured to cry and look confused the entire movie, it is only then will I find myself agreeing with her.

As far as a ‘disrespect’ to the character, I think not. In the core values of acting, there is unspoken respect for masters of the craft. Especially for the late Alan Rickman who was such a respected member of theater for so many of his unforgettable roles. Adam Driver is one to definitely be honored to pay such a part and truly bring Alan Rickman back to us on screen for a short amount of time. It takes guts to follow in the shadow of a master, but Adam Douglas Driver is fearless!

I’ll leave you with this notion, friends. Always appreciate the arts and those who’ve dedicated their lives to it. In a world full of hate, it seems to be only joyous thing this universe has left. Without artists, we’d have no Star Wars and our lives would be dull and meaningless! A life with no Star Wars… Can you even imagine?
