Year So Far Book Asks: 6, 8
6. Biggest surprise
Along with Vanity Fair, some of the biggest surprises were:
I did not expect Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth, a Victorian fallen-women novel, to be (overall) such a sweet, gentle story with such lovely atmosphere.
I did not expect that I would love reading a biography of St. Thomas Aquinas and grow to love the man as much as I did (though if anyone could pull that off, I should have expected that Chesterton could).
Charity and the Churlish Captain by Nina Clare seemed like a mindless Heyer pastiche with an annoying romance-novel heroine--and then it surprised me by giving her a surprisingly deep character arc as the characters have to learn how to deal with some pretty dark suffering.
8. Favorite new character
Ever since I finished Vanity Fair, there's a pretty good chance at any given moment that I'm thinking about Rawdon Crawley. I've long-wished Austen would have had the courage/ability to show a reformed rake, and this almost did that. His character arc was so lovely and meant so much to me. One scene of his story will forever haunt me, and I will forever wish he could have had a happier ending than he did.

🌱 SEEDLING - what is their most vivid memory from childhood?
Coming home from boarding school and finding out how her family was captured by the elder pack. Her parents had realized they couldn't shield her from finding out the things they had suffered because of the pain they went through. She was ten years old when that happened. She was never that trusting anyway among humans but after that she buried herself in her studies not letting anyone get close to her.
🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?
Clare's greatet wish is to have her own lab and have her research published in renowned scientific journals. She's very dedicated to doing her best and spends most of her time studying to accomplish her goal to the exclusion of doing what most people do for fun.
🍩 DONUT - favourite sweet treat?
Salted caramel
💢 ANGER - what are some habits they have that will take some getting used to?
Studying. She study's all the time. It's fun. If she's not studying she's reading science journals for fun. She's pretty single minded at this point in her life.
She also has the habit of trying to push people away and hiding behind her studies to keep people at a distance.
🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?
She has a ring her grandmother Lola gave her. It has been passed down through the MacDuff side of the family for generations. Clare usually keeps the ring locked in her jewelry box rather than were it. She doesn't want to lose it or damage it in the lab. It means the world to her as it reminds her of home and of the family she's always prepared to fight for. She hopes that one day she'll pass it on to her own granddaughter.
📖 OPEN BOOK - do they like reading? what's their favourite genre?
Yes she loves to read but it's mostly science journals. If you happen to pry the journal from her hands than she enjoys mysteries and nonfiction/biographies about strong women.
🎵 MUSIC NOTE - what is their playlist like? their favourite artists? do you associate a particular song with them?
If she were to listen to music it'd be more instrumental. Something that could be played in the background while she studies. Something like this 🎶 This song reminds me of Clare in the fact she's strong she's not going to let the past hold her down. For some reason it makes me think of her confronting Ella (her mom) and how she's determined not to follow in her footsteps

I don't get why so many people love the shadowhunters books by Cassandra Clare. I tried reading the first series but I just couldn't continue with them. I also couldn't like the ACOTAR series either. Every booktube channel I've seen all claim those series to be the best. I just don't see it. Maybe it's just because I'm not all that into young adult fiction. I prefer paranormal romance, thriller, romantic suspense, some contemporary romance, action and biographies.

religion in leora;
This post will not be formatted as a university lecture normally would be, but will rather contain questions from the inbox as well as contextual solarpunk information from this post. Admin Grey is solely responsible for what is written here and hopes all conveyed ideas are appropriately respectful of the topics involved.
Are people in Sotiris allowed to practice their religious beliefs?
Yes. Collective citizens who have moved to Leora and more specifically Sotiris, are allowed to practice their religious beliefs. The only limitations placed by the council would involve religious beliefs that limit or infringe upon the rights of others.
For example, refusing certain individuals service (like a Venpalan entrepreneur refusing to serve Humans) based on a religious belief would not be allowed. Similarly, Medical Doctors practicing on Sotiris would not be able to deny any service based on religious beliefs. Religious practices that involve illicit drugs or harming others would not be allowed, etc.
Are religious gatherings or holy days allowed?
Yes-ish. Religious institutions like churches, synagogues, mosques, temples or other buildings which are used solely for religious worship are not currently allowed on Leora. Private residences or larger rooms in the Meditation coves may be used for religious gatherings, but religious institutions are not allowed to have their own buildings nor accept money or donations of any kind. Imams, Monks,  Priests, Rabbis, etc. are similarly disallowed from accepting monetary or physical donations.
Given Leora’s history as a planet full of small far-left communities with sociopolitical, philosophical, and economic ideologies congruent with the socialist movement, charities and other fundraisers would be unnecessary. Off-planet communities in need of assistance cannot currently raise money on Leora due to issues with the fluctuating economy thanks to the sudden introduction of the Collective on the planet. In rp terms, its also just easier for me as its one less thing I need to keep track of.
Holy days and holidays may be observed and events for such days can be hosted so long as they are not being used to raise funds for the religious institution. Preaching in public areas is not allowed unless it is a speech given for a holiday event; but holy days, worships, and symbols or decorations would not be prohibited in any way.
The following blockquotes are excerpts from the linked post by creation-clare. Contextual information for sotiris-rp is outside of the blockquotes.
What is religious literacy?
Religious literacy is, at its most basic, an understanding that religion is an intersectional factor in both the public and private spheres. That means that religion affects culture, society, and politics. Religious literacy also means possessing a foundational understanding of various religious traditions’ history, texts (if applicable), beliefs, practices, and modern-day expressions. Learn more about religious literacy here.
You do not need to be religious yourself to be religiously literate! You do not need to be a religious studies scholar to be religiously literate!
Individuals at Sotiris-rp who choose to include religious aspects in their character biographies will not have those aspects overseen by the admins in any way. All members of sotiris-rp are expected to be accepting of all religions out-of-character, if not religiously literate. Writers who include religion in their character backstories are encouraged to use a religion they know well or create one of their own. The universe is a vast place and characters here can come from any corner of it, meaning there can be a wide variety of religions in Sotiris.
The only time I will step in is if I personally believe (or it is brought to my attention) that someone is mocking a religion.
Why is religious literacy important in activism?
The fact is, if you are going to be part of an activist movement, you are going to encounter religious people. This is simply the truth. It does not matter how you feel about religion yourself; you will be working alongside people all across the spectrum of religious traditions and religiosity. For a lot of these people, their religion will be the reason they are working for change. Thus, you can’t ignore religion.
But most importantly—in my opinion—is understanding, through religious literacy, that we all have bias about religion, and that we all need to work through that bias. Everyone grew up somewhere, and there is nowhere on this Earth that has not been touched by religion in some way. We all carry assumptions about what religion is, what a religious person looks or acts like, what [insert religion here] believes, etc etc. And frankly, a lot of those assumptions are very skewed, if not simply wrong.
Speaking broadly, Leorans have no religion and thus have no bias when it comes to monotheistic or polytheistic beliefs. Their culture is based largely on scientific advancement for the sake of being one with nature. Collective beings, again, are from all over the universe and writers may create their own backstories.
What does this have to do with solarpunk specifically?
Here are a few reasons religious literacy is important in solarpunk:
- Like I mentioned before, every solarpunk activist will encounter a fellow activist who is religious, and we all need to be prepared for conversations about religion that are respectful and open-minded. Knowing the basics about the major religions of the world and being open to learning more is essential for this.
- Solarpunk, as a movement that encourages hope and harmony with the Earth, has a lot of ideological overlap with major teachings in a ton of religious traditions. You will certainly encounter this in your activism, and you have to be prepared to understand the basics.
- Building a better future must include making room for people to be religious. This doesn’t just mean “to each their own” individualism, but it means imagining your solarpunk utopia complete with mosques, shrines, temples, churches, and other communal places of worship and veneration. It means planning ahead for disagreements between religious organizations (yes, “organized religion” will still exist) and thinking up solutions for those disagreements. It means allowing your comrades to express their religiosity free of judgement or exclusion.
Within the rp universe the admins have established, members of the Collective only started moving to Leora in March of 2022. Around seven months have passed, but the city of Sotiris is still predominantly populated by Leorans who had no need of places of worship. In the event exploring this aspect of the world we’re creating together interests our members, I would be happy to incorporate places of worship into the city of Sotiris. Given the nature of governmental work (even if its in a roleplay) I would estimate construction on such buildings would be completed and open for visitation starting in 2023.
Essentially, assume religious leaders are working with members of the Sotiris council to be allowed to build their places of worship, but that they are not currently available.

do you have any reading recs for the intersection and/or similarities between the disabled & trans experiences? the community of trans, disabled, and trans disabled people working together? tysm sarah
i have many, too many to list here! below are a few links and names to get you started, but trans disability studies is a rapidly-growing field really exploding with new scholarship right now. trans studies specifically is having something of a "crip turn," particularly since the publication of Hil Malatino's long essay, "Trans Care." I don't know what's going to happen going forward, but as it stands, there is active and growing interest in the nexus of trans and disabled subjectivity, especially w/r/t social conditions that design (for) us lives deemed unlivable.
i'm going to focus in this post on scholarship that explicitly engages both with trans and disability studies thought, rather than just work from one area that happens to bring in a topic from the other. Of course, it isn't possible to fully delineate these areas, nor should we try. but trans studies and disability studies are whole academic fields with distinct genealogies and theoretical orientations, and it sounds like you're looking for work that brings these sometimes-disparate orientations together very deliberately. Mad studies also has its own disparate genealogy that is sometimes at odds with disability studies, depending on who you're reading; on the other hand, neurodiversity studies tends to follow and cite DS a little more closely. i'm not going to get into the weeds here, but i did want to provide a disclaimer about how complicated this shit is before i give a LIMITED! INCOMPLETE! list of places to start reading.
my work in transMad studies (which I made up; Trans Disability Studies and Feminist Disability Studies, and intersections therein, predate me) draws explicitly on trans, disability, and Mad studies approaches, as well as/alongside the critical digital humanities, poetics, and science & technology studies. i've written about transMadness / trans disabled digital work / Mad gender noncompliance / trans autie-biography. I also co-authored the chapter on the trans/disabled intersection in Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, 2nd ed.
Some key authors in the area of trans disability studies // transMad studies include but are not limited to:
Eli Clare
M. Remi Yergeau
Nick Walker
Mel Chen
Jake Pyne
Jess Rauchberg
Lydia X. Z. Brown
J. Logan Smilges
Justine Egner
Leah Lakshmi Piepzna Samarasinha
Alexandre Baril
Hil Malatino
Merrick Pilling
Cameron Awkward-Rich
Sky Cubacub
I have included alongside each name a link to one piece of their work that I like. Again, MANY people write about trans / disability / Mad issues in concert, or who talk about certain issues through a t/d/M lens. I listed only a small number of people for the reasons I mention at the start of the post.
Also, much of this work I have selected deliberately to trouble preexisting assumptions about trans disabled solidarity/activism/scholarship – namely, that it starts and ends at the question of pathologization. When we limit the scope of trans disabled liberation work to the boundaries of the clinic (material, discursive, or otherwise) we do ourselves a grave disservice.
i'm going to leave it there as a starting point, but encourage you to check the citations of each of the linked pieces, as they're often treasure troves of further resources.

Foucault News Info wanted: What fountain pen did Foucault write with?
At Foucault News, Clare O’Farrell asks for information – What fountain pen did Foucault write with? Editor: I have recently developed an interest in fountain pens and was wondering if anybody knew what brand of fountain pen Foucault used? He may have used a biro (like Ian Fleming) but most writers at the time he was writing would have used fountain pens.  From the biographies and from those…
