English and me
Hi, good morning, my name is Ícaro. I’m 21 years old, I do chemical engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and I live in Rio de Janeiro. English has always been part of my life, whether at school, where I have always studied English, and Aldo outside of school, where I have always had contact with music, games, news, internet and movies. Lately I have been consuming English more and more, I think this is the result of the great globalization we are experiencing. I belive that English has the power to impact our lives and identities in various ways, whether in educational and professional opportunities, in communication in which it allows to establish international connections with people from different countries and cultures, and also in the cultural influence where it is possible to expand their cultural perspectives. For me, speaking English currently only has positive aspects, because it allows great acess to information, job opportunity and personal devolopment.

The road to conscious consumption during the Tik Tiok era
We live in an era where social media is on the rise and people are always connected. Social media influences behavior, tastes, and even style, becoming much more than communication. Tiktok has come a window for selling products in different ways and now we have influences stimulating (in a veiled ways) people to buy constantly.
The word “recebidos” is very common to hear by the influencers, and is a good way to explain these new ways to influence the purchase. We are constantly bombarded with the receipts of the day, and other day, and the other day. The marketing script makes us believe that we need products. Here are some examples taken from social media: ”you need this! is perfect and you will be beautiful in this”or “stop everything and look at this product! omg is amazing” We are stimulated to buy products that sometimes we don’t need. And the other day is very likely to be a new product to consume, because they follow trends. I think this is a big problem in this industry, to stimulate people to over consume trends that in the future will disappear.
Although I believe it is possible to reverse this situation, first we need to detox the influencers and all social media. In order to do so, always ask the question “where does this product go next? In the trash or in nature? We need to question ourselves about the life of the products. After that, we need to detox ourselves, following people with more minimalist thoughts and who cares more about consuming less, like “Nátaly Neri '' an influence who thinks about sustainability and conscious consumption. We need to create a more critical look about what is presented to us in the TikTok and in other social medias.

English for me
Hi! My name is Oséias Vargas, I´m 33 years old, I’m Brazilian, and I live in Rio de janeiro. I graduated in physiotherapy 8 years ago, and I have a PhD in urogynecological physiotherapy. I work with patients who have urinary incontinence, fecal and sexual dysfunction. I hear English all the time on the street, market, pharmacy and bars, since I live in a very touristy neighborhood. I believe in English as a way to open my horizons and most importantly, The world is divided by beliefs, economics, politics, fights over territories, and English is the language with the best chance of communicating and uniting the World, the problem is that not everyone has access to english. We need to solve this.☺️

English in my life
Hi guys! My name is Leandra Pires de Souza. I am 22 years old and I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am an undergraduate student of Occupation Therapy at UFRJ. English is the impacts my identity because I do not speak English fluently. I do not see myself, I do not identify that language yet. A positive point about the English is the status of lingua franca, which makes it a facilitator of communication around the world now. But, a negative point that English has been taught any with quality in the public schools in Brazil.

English in my life
Hello!! My name is Kerolin. I’m 24 years old, I’m from Rio de Janeiro and I study civil engineering at UFRJ.
I studied English all my life, but only at a basic level, which was the level offered by the schools I attended.
English has been present throughout my entire life. It influences my communication with both Brazilian and foreign people, my study environment, my social media, and even my participation in cheerleading. English strongly impacts all these aspects of my life. English is part of who I am, but in a basic way.
Despite it being important, using the language is negative when it substitutes the native words and these words are forgotten, but it is positive when it expands your opportunities and improves your global communication.

Hi! My name is Elen, I'm 25 years old and I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I'm a biotechnology technician and a biomedical student, now I'm an English student because it is a necessity for a scientific life. I use English all day in my life because English is science's official language, so I had contact with English in my study and work, in articles, books and congresses. In my social media, I consume more content in English. I also like to listen to music and to watch movies in English .
English has an important part in my life because, if I can understand the scientific language, I feel better and more confident to study, to present at congresses and do my work with more quality. It can connect me with other cultures and knowledge around the world too. It can create job opportunities.
The positive aspect about using English in my life is that I can use this capacity to understand and communicate with the world and use it to grow in my education background. The negative aspect about using English is that the more Brazilians consume it they value more things from other places outside Brazil.

ENGLISH AROUND ME
Hello, my name is Marcyellen Barreto. I'm 21 years old, I live in Rio de Janeiro, in the city of São Gonçalo. I am a student of Biomedicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in the same place where I take English classes at CLAC.
English is very present in all my routines, for example in music, in the texts I have to read and study for classes, and very present in the internship I do. This language impacts my life in many ways and, while studying it, I realized that it is very important because it is very present in my life. When speaking English I feel smarter, a more serious person, more stylish.
About the positive and negative aspects of English in my life, on the positive side English helps me to communicate with people from abroad, it helps me to deepen my studies and it gives me a chance to carry out an exchange in the future. On the negative side, even though it is a very good language, it is difficult to learn, at least in my experience, but not impossible.

Hello!! My name is Marco Regis, I'm from Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Brazil, I'm married, I have 2 children and I've been working as a tattoo artist for 16 years. English has always been present in my life since my youth through movies, music and video games, where I tried to decipher the words in games that were mostly in English and I had a lot of difficulty, because the English that was taught in schools did not pass of the “verb To Be” and I lacked the necessary focus to understand the language well. I decided to learn English because I love the language, but I have a lot of difficulty understanding and pronouncing it and I also want to do a broader study on tattoos around the world, such as: culture, prejudices, origin, history, etc.. Not to mention that English is essential to communicate with people from all over the world and to acquire new cultures.

English is present in my life today in a moderate way, it is present in movies and in music basically. But, when I was young, it seemed to be more present, since in my teenage years my country suffered the diplomatic opening and we were flooded by American culture and other people who also used English . Our country was very behind in all kinds of information coming from other countries. Because there was a dictatorship in Brazil and all information, music or other things was supervised.
I notice a lot of the difficulty in relation to the songs, but understanding the message. The English offered in Brazilian schools is very bad, in my opinion, because there is a lack of incentives and teaching is discontinued, causing discouragement and abandonment by students.
This is very bad for Brazil, considering that we are among the 10 largest economies in the world and learning english is fundamental for commercial and diplomatic relations.
Even though, I have simple goals compared to many of my colleagues, I already notice positive impacts when Ia come across a report in English and I try to translate it to understand and learn. My family is also encouraging me by proposing conversations in a second language.
I intend to continue studying English and improve every day. It has been a great journey in the search for knowledge. I go at my own pace, but a go. Getting to know the language, people, and making friends.
Thank you

How does the English language impact your daily life/self-identity?
Hello, I'm Marcus Vinicius, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am 44 years old.
I have a background in advertising and I have seen and used English since I was a child, due to my basketball lifestyle and all the content around my favorite sport.
I do not just use English for my work, I also use it for watching movies, listening to songs and all content of basketball.
From these habits in my childhood routine connected me with English, this connection for me has a huge impact, because my reality was so humble and this made me look at the World like a place to explore and discover.
I think confidence is a positive aspect of English, everybody in the actual World who dominates the language can feel like that, I hope to feel that some day.
The negative aspects of English are the excess of capitalist messages around or associated with the language, which, in some way, brings some doubts about other cultures or points of view.

About me
Hello, my name is Marianna. I am from Brasília, Brazil, but nowadays, I live in Rio de Janeiro. I study nutrition at UFRJ and I am a scientific initiation student on chronic kidney disease. English is present in my routine when I watch movies, series and read articles in English. The english language has a great impact on my identity, as I prefer music, movies and series in English instead of portuguese. On that side it is a negative point, because I tend to prefer another language over my own, however, the positive point is that I get to know more about the culture of other countries.

The english in my life
Heloo!!! My name is Cleide Regis, I'm 38 years old, I live in Santíssimo in Rio de Janeiro. I have a degree in Information Technology and I am currently studying Chemical Processes at IFRJ. I decided to study English because I see that English is part of my routine in different situations, such as music, movies, series and also in my academic life. And this has an impact on my social identity, as English can open doors in the job market, because most large companies require that you have to master as little English as possible to get a job. English can open and close doors if you don't know how to master it and it brings positive aspects, as it is essential to communicate with the world, but I see the negative side, when the English culture is imported into my country, it can make ours be depreciated.

Hello, my name is Thaissa Gabriel da Silva Moutinho, I'm 20 years old and I live in Campo Grande in Rio de Janeiro. I am a student of Naval and Oceanic Engineering at UFRJ. English is present in my routine in my studies, in movies, in series and in music. This language does not have much impact on my identity, because I am not fluent, but it interferes with my studies and the lack of communication with people from other countries. The use of the language has as a positive point to facilitate your communication and relationship with foreign people, in addition to making it easier to get some jobs and knowing English nowadays is essential. Tiktok buys you.
The most used app nowadays is TikTok, which since 2016, when it was launched, has been downloaded more than 3.5 billion times in app stores like the Apple Store and Google Play.
Having the daily mark of 1 billion active users daily, the social network giant encompasses videos of different genres; cuisine, music, lifestyle, beauty and shopping. Yes, shopping. Companies are increasingly focused on advertising their products through the social network and attracting buyers through digital influencers. People who, like all of us, also use (or not) the products and pass on the vision of how to use, why, what is the usefulness or improvement of a product.
A lot of money is spent around the 15 seconds of advertising, but it is enough time to generate in the buyer the need to have what in some cases, there is no need. Tiktok generates consumerism in the user unadulterated by the mere pleasure of following a trend or wearing clothes similar to the super well-produced influencers.
It's dangerous to think that such a short but still very well planned video has the power to make us buy products and spend money so easily.
