VW plans to launch an all-electric car sharing service next year

Volkswagen Group is launching a car-sharing service called WE that only uses electric vehicles, following the lead of rivals such as Daimler and BMW that have operated their own on-demand car rental services for years.

VW’s car-sharing service will launch in Germany next year and then expand to major cities in Europe, North America and Asia beginning in 2020. The entire fleet will be electric vehicles, VW Group said Wednesday.

“We are convinced that the car sharing market still has potential,” Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen’s board member for sales said in a statement. “That is why we are entering this market with a holistic single-source concept covering all mobility needs from the short journey that takes just a few minutes to the long vacation trip.”

The German automaker’s WE business is designed to do more than car-sharing. The WE vehicle-on-demand platform will initially focus on car sharing. But eventually it will include other modes of transportation such as scooters.

Volkswagen showed off two electric concepts in March, an e-scooter it calls the Streetmate and Cityskater, which the company describes as a “last-mile electric street surfer.” Volkswagen sees the WE platform helping connect customers to car-sharing service, rent one of these micro-mobility vehicles, or even pay for parking.

The automaker also sees the WE platform connecting to MOIA, the automaker’s mobility company that has launched a ride-sharing service with an all-electric shuttle vehicle. The all-electric car, which made its debut at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin in December, is designed to provide space for up to six passengers.

The vehicle-on-demand services available on the Volkswagen WE platform will be managed by UMI Urban Mobility International, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG that began operating in 2018.

Volkswagen Announces We Car-Sharing Service for 2019

With car ownership by young people declining and the increased interest in all-electric vehicles among car buyers overall, Volkswagen’s MOIA unit will launch a new all-electric zero-emission car-sharing platform called ‘We’ next year.

The news was announced by Jürgen Stackmann, the Volkswagen brand board member responsible for Sales, at an event in Berlin.

VW’s hope is that vehicle-on-demand services, in particular car-sharing, will expand the WE/We customer platform offering from MOIA, which is developing mobility solutions including fleet-based commuter shuttles and on-demand transportation.

The We service will debut in Germany next year with a broader rollout in 2020, initially launching in major cities in Europe, North America and Asia. In all market launches, the fleet will consist entirely of electric vehicles.

“We are convinced that the car-sharing market still has potential. That is why we are entering this market with a holistic single-source concept covering all mobility needs from the short journey that takes just a few minutes to the long vacation trip,” Stackmann commented.

“Our vehicle-on-demand fleets will consist entirely of electric cars, and will therefore provide zero-emission, sustainable mobility. That is an intelligent way to relieve the strain on urban areas.”

The We launch will enhance MOIA’s other initiatives including its all-electric rideshare vehicle (above), of which TechCrunch noted:

“This six-seater vehicle goes above and beyond the typical current electric vehicle, with individual seats in place of bench, and with USB ports and dimmable interior lighting for individual passenger comfort and convenience. There’s built-in onboard Wi-fi, and luggage storage provided not in the rear as you might expect, but up front next to the driver to provide more leg and passenger room in the rear compartment.”

Apart from car-sharing, VW’s vehicle-on-demand plans include micro-mobility solutions. Volkswagen recently presented progressive e-mobile solutions for urban centers with the I.D. Cityskater and the I.D. Streetmate.

The automaker is also developing a parking app and location-based vouchering to complement the ride-hailing and car-pooling mobility solutions offered by MOIA.

We’s vehicle-on-demand services will be managed by Urban Mobility International (UMI), a Berlin-based wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen led by CEO Philip Reth.

As Reth commented: “Our customers expect an environmentally-friendly fleet that takes them to their destination quickly and at a fair price—and that is exactly the experience we will be delivering.”
