tell me about amman, jordan; i'm going to be studying there in september!!
Firstly, I'm sorry for the delayed answer. I somehow didn't notice your ask until now (turns out the asks inbox is rather well hidden in the tumblr app 😅).
And honestly, I can't tell much about Amman, because our Jordan trip was rather short in general (I'm very happy spouse an I found the time at all, but it was kind of a Better A Few Days Than Nothing At All situation), and I don't have more than a tourist's perspective.
That being said, here are a few personal impressions I have about Amman:
It's buzzing with life! Especially on top of one of Amman's hills, one can hear lots of traffic, people talking and/or shouting, children playing, all kinds of animals. I was absolutely amazed by how lively this city sounds.
Also, Amman is h u g e. We were told it takes six hours to cross it via car. Which of course is also due to its bustling traffic. Naturally, in the three days or so we were in Amman, we barely scratched the surface of this marvellous city.
There's a striking lack of public transport. From what I've seen and heard, either you own a ride, or you know someone with a ride, or you take a taxi/uber (our travel agency back home organized a local driver for us, who was very helpful). Anything else ends up with you walking.
As someone who doesn't like shorts, I did love that only the tourists wore shorts. Everyone who seemed local wore trousers.
Drinking tap water is not advisable. Like, I mentioned using boiled tap water for tea to someone and got an Are You Nuts look in response (I refreshed my typhoid shots before my Jordan trip, so I felt rather safe about that). You might know that already, I guess. However, I'm from a country with high quality tap water, so some questions surrounding water quality don't come to me as automatically as to other people (like, Where do the ice cubes in my drink come from?). As a side note, I loved the little yoghurt cups that were used as packaging for water. They're very light, which is very practical when one has to carry one's waste for some time till one finds the next bin. Clever!
Spouse and I felt very safe in Amman, and everyone we met was kind and hospitatable. Of course, we obviously were tourists. But still. We encountered nothing but kindness. One example: There is a Coptic Orthodox church in Suliman al Nabulsi Street, and after we asked if the church was open, someone immediatly gave us a lovely little tour for just a pay what you want donation for the church.
Fav places of mine were Amman Citadel (marvellous ruins, thousands of years of history, and one helluva view!), Darat al Funun (a lovely art gallery with a gorgeous lil café; the nearby Al Kalha Stairs are also absolutely worth a visit!), and the Wild Jordan Center (who also had lovely café with a gorgeous view).
These impressions I took home with me. I hope this helps you a bit, and I wish you best of luck for your studies!
As a little bonus, please have a picture of the view from Amman Citadel. The two guys from the Tourism Police really add some postcard vibes that to me make the pic perfect.

5 Places to visit in Jordan for the first timers
Jordan is a captivating destination for first-time visitors, offering a blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. From the iconic Petra, known as "Rose City," to the surreal desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, Jordan presents a wide variety of experiences. The Dead Sea, with its mineral-rich waters and spa resorts, provides relaxation and rejuvenation, while Amman, the capital, offers a lively mix of modernity and historical treasures. For history lovers, Jerash’s remarkably preserved Roman ruins are a must-see. Jordan's diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and welcoming hospitality make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking adventure, history, and relaxation all in one trip. It’s a land of wonders waiting to be explored.
Tumblr media
Here are some places to visit in Jordan for first timers.
1. Petra: The Historic Rose City:
Tumblr media
The most famous site in Jordan is Petra, which is among the New Seven Wonders of the World and a must-see for travelers arriving for the first time. Petra, a large archaeological site that stretches back to the 4th century BC, is dubbed the "Rose City" due to its pink-hued rock formations. Soaring majestically out of the sandstone cliffs, the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) is the city's most well-known landmark. The Roman Theater, the Street of Facades, and the Monastery (Ad-Deir) are also open for exploration by guests. Exploring this ancient city is made even more magical by hiking through the Siq, a narrow gorge that leads to Petra.
2. Wadi Rum: The Scenery of the Martian Desert:
Tumblr media
Wadi Rum, sometimes referred to as the Valley of the Moon, is a breathtaking desert region that has enthralled both adventurers and filmmakers. Its soaring rock formations, starry night skies, and red sand dunes all combine to create an otherworldly, odd atmosphere. Experience the complete splendor of this UNESCO World Heritage site with hot air balloon rides, camel rides, or Jeep tours for first-time visitors. Wadi Rum also provides a special chance to stay in a Bedouin camp, where you can take advantage of traditional hospitality, eat real Jordanian food, and watch the stars in a peaceful desert setting.
3. The Natural Wonder of the Dead Sea:
Tumblr media
For visitors to Jordan for the first time, a must-see attraction is the Dead Sea, which is the lowest point on Earth. The Dead Sea is well-known for its extraordinarily salty waters, which make it easy to float, as well as its mineral-rich mud, which is thought to have healing qualities. Indulge in spa services or just unwind by floating in the tranquil waters. The resorts in the area provide opulent amenities like restaurants, spas, and swimming pools, making it the ideal place to unwind and revive. The distinct weather and breathtaking scenery of the Dead Sea offer a striking contrast to Jordan's other desert regions.
4. Amman: A Fusion of Modern and History:
Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a dynamic city that skillfully combines the past and present. There are plenty of attractions for first-time visitors, ranging from bustling markets and modern restaurants to ancient ruins. Situated atop one of Amman's seven hills, the Citadel provides an insight into the city's extensive past, featuring the Umayyad Palace and the Roman Temple of Hercules. The magnificence of the ancient city is on display at the Roman Theater, another well-known landmark. There are bustling souks (markets) in downtown Amman where you can purchase traditional Jordanian goods, handicrafts, and spices. The upscale Abdoun district offers chic eateries, shops, and cafes for a taste of modern Jordan.
5. Jerash: The Eastern Roman Ruins:
Known as the "Pompeii of the East," Jerash is among the best-preserved Roman cities found outside of Italy. History buffs should not miss this ancient city, which is only an hour's drive from Amman. The magnificent Hadrian's Arch, the Hippodrome, and the Temple of Artemis are just a few examples of the site's remarkable Roman architecture. As you stroll through Jerash's colonnaded streets, you can almost feel the ancient civilizations that once called this place home. Every summer, Jerash hosts the annual Festival of Culture and Arts, which offers a distinctive cultural experience by bringing the ruins to life with music, dance, and theatre performances.
Conclusion:
Jordan offers a perfect mix of historical, natural, and cultural experiences for first-time visitors. From the ancient city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the otherworldly landscapes of Wadi Rum and the healing waters of the Dead Sea, Jordan has something for every traveler. Amman’s lively markets and Jerash’s Roman ruins add to the country's diverse attractions. Before planning your trip, ensure you have your Jordan visa, which is necessary for entry. Whether you're exploring ancient history or indulging in natural beauty, Jordan's warmth and hospitality will make your visit unforgettable. This stunning country is an ideal destination for those seeking adventure, history, and relaxation in one journey.

Tumblr media
Sample of YOLO daily cycling tours:
Δ Madaba – Cycling to Dead Sea Via Mount Nebo: Transfer to Madaba, the City of the Mosaics. Madaba is the most important Christian centre in Jordan and best known for its Byzantine mosaics. The most important of these is the sixth century mosaic of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, which covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox church of St George. This morning we can marvel at its detail and natural colour.
Today’s ride starts with a 4.3mi (7km) mild ascent up to Mount Nebo, reputedly the burial site of Moses. We take a pitstop at the top for a spectacular view over the valley below. From here it’s a fantastic descent to the shores of the Dead Sea. Parts of this descent are quite steep but support will be at hand and you can take your time. We follow the coast on a smooth, paved surface to Suwaima where we can change and take a float in the waters.
You will need to be in Madaba to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 14 KM / Time: 3 hours / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%
Δ Madaba Cycling to Mukaweir:
Within an hour’s drive from Madaba along the picturesque Kings’ Highway, is Mukawir (Machaerus), the hilltop stronghold of Herod the Great. Upon Herod’s death, his son Herod Antipas inherited the fortress and it is from here that he ordered John the Baptist to be beheaded after Salome’s fateful dance of the seven veils. The 1st Century AD Roman-Jewish historian, Josephus, identifies the awe-inspiring site of Machaerus (modern-day Mukawir) as the palace / fort of herod Antipas, who was the Roman-appointed ruler over the region during the life of Jesus Christ. It was here, at this hilltop fortified palace, overlooking the Dead Sea region and the distant hills of Palestine and Israel that herod imprisoned and beheaded John the Baptist after Salome’s fateful dance. “he was beheaded after Salome’s fateful dance” Mathew 14:3-11. Like it’s sister site of Masada on the opposite side of the Dead Sea, Machaerus was also the scene of a Roman siege during the first Jewish revolt against Rome.
you will need to be in Madaba to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 33 KM / Time: 3-4 hours one way. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%
Δ Petra cycling Wadi Araba through Little Petra:
Today’s ride starts from Petra, Enjoy a stunning 25 kilometre descent, dropping around 900 metres on a little-used winding country road through the dry mountains of Wadi Araba into the lush greenery of the Jordan Valley. The views on the way down are stunning! We will get back to Petra Using the Bus.
you will need to be in Petra to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 25 KM / Time: 3 hours. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 50%, Off Road 50%
Δ Dead Sea Cycling to Wadi Mujib (Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib ) – Back to the Dead Sea: Today’s ride starts from Dead Sea, along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The road is mostly flat but here and there we encounter long undulations. The views are very special with the Dead Sea on our right with Israel’s Desert visible on the other side of the Dead Sea, and the colourful hills of Moab, interspersed with clusters of palm trees and oases on our left. we stop at Wadi Mujib, proudly called the ‘Grand Canyon of Jordan’. The spectacular chasm is also significant as the historic boundary between the ancient Amorites (to the north) and the Moabites (to the south). Moses is believed to have walked through Wadi Mujib, then known as the Arnon Valley. The King’s Highway crosses the wadi’s upper reaches, while its lower reaches fall within the Mujib Biosphere Reserve – normally accessed from the Dead Sea Hwy.
The Siq Trail is a popular hiking route within the Wadi Mujib Nature Reserve, located along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The trail takes you through a narrow, deep gorge, offering a unique and breathtaking experience. As you start your hike, you’ll be immediately immersed in the natural beauty of Wadi Mujib. Towering sandstone cliffs surround you, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. The sunlight filters through the cracks, creating fascinating patterns on the rock walls. One of the highlights of the Siq Trail is the opportunity to wade through water. The trail follows a riverbed, and at times, you’ll find yourself walking in shallow water. Be prepared to get wet and wear appropriate water shoes or sandals that provide a good grip.
you will need to be in the Dead Sea to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. This daily cycling can be done during this period (01. April – 31. October) Distance: 35 KM / Time: 3-4 hours. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%
