Editor’s Picks: 21 of the Best Face Mists to Refresh, Hydrate, Calm or Mattify Your Skin
This article may contain affiliate links. See our Disclosure for more information.
Whether you're dealing with dryness, redness or an oily T-zone, there's a face mist out there that can help.
Of course, a quick spritz is always great to refresh your skin—like after a long day at work or a sweaty yoga session.

Thanks for watching!
But as I explained in my face mist tutorial, you can also use mists to pack in more moisture in between other skincare products, calm sensitivity, absorb excess sebum, and more.
Here's what to look for, plus the best face mists I've found to date!
What to Look for in a Face Mist
Tumblr media
Face mists from Dr Roebuck's, Tata Harper, Herbivore, Pai, Odacité, BIOeffect and Éminence.
Since face mist is a leave-on product that can be applied on bare skin as well as on top of skincare and makeup, it's important that it doesn't irritate, clog pores or increase photosensitivity.
I look for face mists that meet the following criteria:

Thanks for watching!
Low in fragrance: It's the number one cause of skin reactions. Keep in mind that essential oils can also be sensitizing (with citrus in particular making your skin more sun sensitive).
Low in alcohol: It's too drying, especially if you already have dry or sensitive skin.
Low in witch hazel: Not everyone reacts to it, but it can cause irritation if you are sensitive.
Low in silicones: Not only are they the worst ingredient for causing product pilling, but they can also trap other ingredients in your pores, leading to clogging and breakouts.
Has humectants: These are ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into the skin. (Just make sure to lock them in with emollients or occlusives like oils, waxes and butters, whether in your moisturizer or the mist itself.)
Has stable oils: You don't have to use a mist that contains oils, but if you do, make sure they are stable. Saturated and monounsaturated oils are best; polyunsaturated oils oxidize (go rancid) quickly and generate free radicals.
Has a preservative: All water-based products must have a preservative to prevent bacterial growth.
The Best Face Mists
Dr Roebuck’s Bondi Hydrating Mist
Tumblr media
Dr Roebuck's Bondi Hydrating Mist
Dr Roebuck's Bondi Hydrating Mist is a face mist and hydrating toner in one. It ticks off all my boxes with its blend of aloe vera, glycerin, niacinamide and extracts of cucumber and Kakadu plum (a rich source of vitamin C). If you're looking for a great basic mist, this one suits all skin, including sensitive.
Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence
Tumblr media
Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence
Packed with hyaluronic acid, Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence can be used both as a face mist and as a hydrating essence underneath your moisturizer. The all-natural formulation features neroli, lavender and rose hydrosols; glycerin; propanediol; and botanical antioxidants. And the green glass packaging is beyond gorgeous!
BIOeffect OSA Water Mist
Tumblr media
BIOeffect OSA Water Mist
BIOeffect OSA Water Mist actually hydrates AND mattifies. It's named for orthosilicic acid (OSA), a type of silica the skin can absorb that helps increase moisture content and gives a semi-matte finish. It also contains glycerin, hyaluronic acid and pure Icelandic glacier water. The tube is perfect to pop in your purse for spritzing throughout the day.
Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic
Tumblr media
Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic
Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic is a non-drying natural mist for combination and blemish-prone skin. Rather than alcohol, it uses mineral-rich rosemary, rice and geranium waters to balance oil production while offering light hydration. This one really drenches your skin, and feels super refreshing.
Caudalie Grape Water
Tumblr media
Caudalie Grape Water
Grape water extracted from organic grapes is the star ingredient in Caudalie Grape Water, along with two percent grape juice. Since grapes are high in polysaccharides, minerals and potassium, they make this one of the most soothing and hydrating sprays—especially for sensitive skin. I've used and loved this product for years!
Tower 28 SOS (Save.Our.Skin) Daily Rescue Facial Spray
Tumblr media
Tower 28 SOS (Save.Our.Skin) Daily Rescue Facial Spray
Tower 28 SOS (Save.Our.Skin) Daily Rescue Facial Spray is the anecdote for stressed-out skin. Whether you're oily, dry or sensitive, its hero ingredient, hypocholorous acid, boosts skin's immunity to stimulate healing. So you can use it whenever your skin feels irritated, dry, broken out or sun damaged.
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist
Tumblr media
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist
When you shake and spray Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist, it emits a lightweight liquid powder to mattify oily and combination skin. Its oil-controlling ingredients include silk powder and kaolin and bentonite clays, while green tea, rice and algae extracts improve water retention. I've been using this instead of loose powder and love it!
Youth to the People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist
Tumblr media
Youth to the People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist
Youth to the People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist is like a spray-on serum for dry and sensitive skin. It nourishes with both humectants (like aloe and hyaluronic acid) and emollients (like propanediol and shea butter), so you don't need to worry about moisture escaping. Plus, the mushroom extract and peptides help to calm down redness.
Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist
Tumblr media
Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist
There are 18 active ingredients in Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist, and my favourite is the sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable form of vitamin C that's great for brightening dull skin and clearing breakouts. Others include hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA to bind moisture, and hesperidin (a flavonoid) to fight pigmentation. It also has an excellent price point!
Skinfix Barrier+ Nutrient Water Misting Tonic
Tumblr media
Skinfix Barrier+ Nutrient Water Misting Tonic
Skinfix Barrier+ Nutrient Water Misting Tonic is a 99 percent natural mist to quench thirsty skin of all types. Among its hydrating and conditioning ingredients are coconut, rose and cucumber waters, hyaluronic acid and panthenol (provitamin B5), which leave skin plump and dewy.
Marie Veronique Pre + Probiotic Daily Mist
Tumblr media
Marie Veronique Pre + Probiotic Daily Mist
Marie Veronique Pre + Probiotic Daily Mist is all about maintaining your skin's microbiome. The brand's proprietary microbiotic complex contains prebiotics plus 34 different probiotic strains to reduce irritation and inflammation. Coconut water, licorice extract, niacinamide and chamomile add to the calming, hydrating effects.
Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist
Tumblr media
Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist
Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist gets its inspiration from the world's first perfume, formulated for the Queen of Hungary in the 14th century. Hungarian thermal water—prized for its high mineral content—is the base for rose, orange blossom and sage waters, glycerin and apple pectin. Not only does it smell divine, but it also dispenses a super-fine mist that won't mess up your makeup.
Odacité Mint + Green Tea Hydra-Purifying Treatment Mist
Tumblr media
Odacité Mint + Green Tea Hydra-Purifying Treatment Mist
Odacité Mint + Green Tea Hydra-Purifying Treatment Mist is an all-natural mist that helps keep oily skin and breakouts in check. Peppermint and willow bark reduce and regulate sebum, while green tea extract neutralizes free radicals. They're infused into aloe vera, instead of water, for lightweight hydration.
Dr. Barbara Sturm Hydrating Face Mist
Tumblr media
Dr. Barbara Sturm Hydrating Face Mist
Dr. Barbara Sturm Hydrating Face Mist gives your skin an instant hydration boost with two of the doctor's favourite ingredients, hyaluronic acid and purslane (Portulaca oleracea). The super-fine mist is also packed with glycerin, panthenol, allantoin, aloe and prickly pear extract for maximum moisture.
OSEA Sea Minerals
Tumblr media
OSEA Sea Minerals
Ideal for normal and combination skin, OSEA Sea Minerals has a formula you won't find anywhere else. Dead Sea salt; red and brown algae; and copper, manganese and zinc ferments are among its all-natural ingredients. They not only moisturize, but also reduce inflammation and protect skin from the elements.
COSRX Low pH PHA Barrier Mist
Tumblr media
COSRX Low pH PHA Barrier Mist
COSRX Low pH PHA Barrier Mist is a fragrance-free mist made with 98.1 percent coconut fruit extract and 0.5 percent gluconolactone (a polyhydroxy acid). Together, they keep skin at its optimal pH so it can stay hydrated and fight off bacteria.
Skin Inc Supplement Bar Pure Serum Mist
Tumblr media
Skin Inc Supplement Bar Pure Serum Mist
Skin Inc Supplement Bar Pure Serum Mist is a face mist that doubles as a serum, thanks to its blend of hyaluronic acid, glycerin and water from the Izumo Yumura hot springs in Japan. The latter has a high mineral content that also helps reduce redness and irritation, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Éminence Red Currant Mattifying Mist
Tumblr media
Éminence Red Currant Mattifying Mist
Red currant, a natural astringent, is the star ingredient in Éminence Red Currant Mattifying Mist for normal to oily skin. Other botanicals in the mix are aloe juice, magnolia bark and elderflower to hydrate, soothe and clarify. It is both refreshing and oil-controlling, and the finish is semi-matte (not too dewy).
Pai Lotus & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic
Tumblr media
Pai Lotus & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic
Pai Lotus & Orange Blossom BioAffinity Skin Tonic is especially good if you're dealing with redness and dehydration—even eczema. Lotus root water, a source of vitamins and amino acids, helps soothe reactive skin. Glycerin moisturizes, and orange flower water helps tone and brighten.
Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist
Tumblr media
Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist
Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist was recently reformulated, with hyaluronic acid and rose hydrosol being added to the mix of aloe vera, glycerin, coconut fruit and hibiscus extract. (And no more witch hazel!) This is a super-juicy mist that leaves your skin feeling soft and fresh.
Biossance Squalane + Micronutrient Fine Mist
Tumblr media
Biossance Squalane + Micronutrient Fine Mist
Biossance Squalane + Micronutrient Fine Mist may dispense a fine mist, but it's one of the most moisturizing, thanks to squalane oil (the brand's hero ingredient). It also contains glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid and algae, plus a mineral complex to combat stress and pollution.

STAYING IN BALANCE WITH AYURVEDA
Try these 5 Ayurvedic tips to keep cool and comfortable during the dog days of summer.
The warmth and brightness of summer filled with long days, picnics, ice cream, and good reads is a refreshing reward after a chilly winter and spring. But summer also can mean skin eruptions, sweat, and dehydration in hot, humid weather. No wonder it's so easy to get off-balance. Focusing on solutions like Ayurveda to retain balance in your mind and body during the summer months can keep you at your healthiest and happiest throughout the season. Try these 5 Ayurvedic tips to keep cool and comfortable during the dog days of summer. Then join Yoga Anytime’s challenge as we all come together in a live practice, guided by Melina Meza.
1. Offset the heat of summer by indulging in more "cooling" foods and limiting "heating" foods. Eating water-rich foods such as watermelon, pears, apples, berries, asparagus, broccoli and cucumber not only rehydrates your body, but loads you up with antioxidants.
Avoid or limit garlic, fried foods, chili, salted cheese, alcohol, red meats, and sour citrus fruits, which tend to add heat. Try Melina Meza’s Arugula and Watermelon Salad for a light and easy summer treat:
Ingredients (organic if possible):
· 3 Cups Arugula
· 2 Cups Watermelon chunks
· 2 Tablespoons Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
· 1/4 Cup Crumbled Feta Cheese
Dressing:
· 3 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
· 1 Teaspoon White Balsamic Vinegar
· Pinch of Sea Salt
· Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Directions:
Prepare all the salad ingredients and place in a large bowl.
Stir dressing ingredients together in a small container until blended.
Drizzle dressing onto salad and toss until the salad is evenly coated with dressing.
Enjoy!
2. Spend time outdoors in morning or evening. Take advantage of the long days of summer to enjoy nature, but avoid the hottest time of the day. Hiking on a trail or spending time near water (beach, lake, riverbank) can bring calmness to a hectic and irritating day. Simple sounds of nature (ocean waves, chirping birds, rainfall, crickets) can be refreshing and soothing. Try an evening walk under the cool summer night sky for peacefulness before sleep.
3. Add cooling colors such as blues, pastels, and whites into your wardrobe and home. Choose lighter shades when getting dressed, even paying attention to accessories. Wear loose, breathable, light, and natural fabrics like linen, cotton, and hemp to stay cool. Pillows and throw rugs in colors of nature are simple ways to bring lightness into your space. Household plants with their green hues are especially pleasing to sun-irritated eyes.
4. Practice patience to keep anxiety at bay and enjoy each moment. Impatience is stressful and increases your heart rate, which can add to feeling overheated. Picking the long line at the grocery store, visiting the inside of the bank rather than the drive-thru, and adding a few extra blocks to your dog-walking routine are all ways to cultivate patience in your everyday life.
5. Make use of aromatherapy and essential oils. Bring bouquets of fresh-cut jasmine, lavender, peony, rose, and honeysuckle in your home for a sweet scent. Take a soothing bath by adding a few drops of chamomile, honeysuckle, geranium, lavender, or sandalwood in the water. Rub coconut or sunflower oil on your body before taking a bath to soothe your skin. Try a spritz of rose hydrosol on your face, neck, or feet for a quick cool-down.

DIY: Natural Recipes for Healthy, Beautiful Lips
NOTE: This article has multiple DIY: Natural Recipes for Healthy, Beautiful Lips. To make it easier to navigate, use the Table of Contents button to your right!
For Dry, Chapped Lips
Chapped Lips Remedy
Apply to the lips:
Chamomile 2 drops
Geranium 2 drops
Mix well with 2 teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel to help heal chapped lips.
Alternatively, use these oils as well: Eucalyptus, Rose, Sandalwood and Neroli.
How to Make Lanolin Lip Balm
1 tsp lanolin
1 tsp grated beeswax
1 tsp petroleum jelly
Melt the lanolin, wax, and petroleum jelly together over medium heat in a glass measuring cup in a pan of boiling water (water bath technique). Pour the melted mixture into a lip gloss container or clean pillbox.  Cool completely, until cool to the touch, approx. 20 minutes.  Rub into lips and enjoy.  Yields 1/2 oz.
DIY Chapped Lip Balm
General rule of thumb for winter chapped lips…basic lip balm recipe: melt together one ounce (by weight, not volume) of Beeswax preferably grated, it will melt faster), a ‘solid' fat…Shea Butter, mango butter, Coconut Oil, etc. and one oz of a rich liquid oil. (I like to use Avocado oil or Kukui Nut for this.)
This makes a basic soothing balm or salve that can be divided into smaller portions and/or enriched in innumerable ways. Use herbal infused oils (infused chamomile or Calendula) for skin soothing.
Chapped Lips Moisturizing Blend
Chamomile 3 drops
Sandalwood 2 drops
Flaxseed 1 teaspoon 5 (ml)
Apply Aloe Vera gel to your chapped lips before using this moisturizing formula.
Pink Pamper for Lips Recipe
This herb-infused pink lip balm will soothe and pamper your lips. Pure rose concrete add an unmistakable feminine aroma, and coupled with the kaolin, creates a smooth texture that goes on without a hitch. The pink color does not transfer to the lips.
6 grams St. John's Wort infused extra virgin olive oil
10 grams avocado butter
4 grams alkanet infused sweet almond oil
6 grams fractionated coconut oil
10 grams  beeswax
a pea-sized amount rose concrete
a pea-sized amount kaolin (China clay)
Combine olive oil, avocado butter, fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil and beeswax in a heat proof measuring cup with a pour spout and place in a hot water bath. Once the beeswax has melted, remove from heat. Stir well. I use disposable pop sickle sticks to stir.
Add rose concrete and kaolin and stir again to ensure an even mix. Make sure the kaolin is completely broken up and dispersed. Pour into lip balm jars, tins or tubes and allow to cool before using.
How to Make Cocoa Mint Lip Balm
1T. + 1.5t. Sweet Almond Oil
1T. Beeswax Pastilles
1.5t. Shea Butter
1.5t. Cocoa Butter
8 Drops Peppermint EO

Lip Gloss Recipes
Naturally Delicious (and Simple) Lip Gloss Recipes
Chocolate Lip Gloss
1 1/2 teaspoons grated Cocoa Butter
1/2 teaspoon Coconut Oil
1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
1/4 teaspoon grated milk chocolate
In a double boiler warm the Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, chocolate and Vitamin E Oil until melted. Pour into lip gloss container and allow to cool.
Aloe Vera Lip Gloss
1 tsp. Aloe Vera gel
1/2 tsp. Coconut Oil
1 tsp. petroleum jelly
Mix together in glass bowl and heat for 1 to 2 minutes on high in the microwave will yield about 1/2 ounce.
Coconut Lip Gloss
1 tsp. Coconut Oil
1 tsp. petroleum jelly
Same mixing and heating instructions as for the Aloe Vera Lip Gloss.
Coconut-Almond Lip Gloss
1 tsp. Coconut Oil
1 tsp. Almond oil
1/2 grated Beeswax
Same mixing and heating instructions apply as for the Aloe Vera Lip Gloss.
Colored Lip Gloss
This is an excellent way to use up lipstick that is too dark.
1 teaspoon grated Beeswax
1/2 teaspoon lipstick
1/2 teaspoon petroleum jelly
Melt the ingredients in a small can placed in boiling water. Stir it well and pour it into a small jar.
Apricot-Orange Lip Gloss
1 tsp Beeswax
1 tsp Apricot Kernel oil
1 tsp Calendula oil
3-4 drops of essential oil of Orange
Beet juice
Melt Beeswax in top of double boiler. Add Apricot Kernel and Calendula oils, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, add beet juice if desired, for color. When partially cooled, add oil of Orange. Store in jar. Transfer a small portion to a purse sized container for use when away from home.
Vanilla Lip Gloss
1 tablespoon grated Beeswax
1 tablespoon Coconut Oil
1/8 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
1/8 teaspoon Vanilla extract
Place the Beeswax, Coconut Oil and Vitamin E Oil in an ovenproof container. Heat gently until the wax and oils are melted. Stir in the Vanilla extract and mix well. Pour the mixture into a clean container and allow to cool completely.
Sweet Lip Gloss
2 tsp Beeswax
1 tsp honey
7 tsp Castor Oil or Jojoba or sweet Almond oil
1/8 tsp. Flavor oil
Melt the oil and Beeswax together in pan over low heat until Beeswax is melted. Remove from stove, add honey and whisk. When the mixture is nearly cool add flavor oil, mix it up again and then pour into lip Balm container.
Since this comes out to be more like a gloss you can always add more Beeswax to it so that it is a little harder (about 1/2 tsp).
Cranberry Lip Gloss
1 tablespoon Almond oil
10 fresh Cranberries
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon petroleum jelly (optional – for more shine)
Mix together all ingredients and place in a microwave or heat-resistant container. Heat in the microwave or a water bath until the mixture just begins to boil (1-2 minutes in the microwave). Stir well and gently mash the berries. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove all pieces of cranberry. Stir and allow to cool completely. When cool, spoon into a clean container.
To use: Spread a small amount onto your lips.
Lava Lamp Lip Gloss
6 Tablespoons Glycerin
50 Drops Lip Balm Flavoring
10 Drops Liquid Food Coloring
Mix together Glycerin, flavoring (I use green apple) and ordinary food coloring (I used red) in a small cup with a pour spout. Fill a roll-on lip gloss bottle about 1/4 with this mixture.
Fill remaining space in bottle with light oil such as sweet Almond oil. Be sure to leave a little room at the top to insert the roller ball assembly. I’ve heard that you can add a little mica or glitter, but I’ve also heard that it may clog the roller.
Citrus Lip Gloss Recipe
This make-it-yourself Citrus Lip Gloss tastes lick-your-lips delicious with both Tangerine and Lemon essential oils offering their benefits and flavors. Tangerine essential oil is a bit of an Aphrodisiac, so it is nice to wear out on a special date. The essential oils and honey combined make the gloss a tasty product that will keep your lips soft and moist for some time.
3 tablespoons sweet Almond oil
2 teaspoon Beeswax (pearls or solid Beeswax grated and measured)
1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel
1 teaspoon honey
800 IU Vitamin E
4 drops Lemon essential oil
3 drops Tangerine essential oil
Melt the Beeswax and sweet Almond oil together in a heat-proof container over boiling water. When the Beeswax is melted, remove from the heat. Add the honey and Vitamin E, mixing briskly with a wire whisk. Add the Aloe Vera gel and stir into the mixture. Add the essential oils and stir in well. Pour into a low wide-mouth jar.

Lip Masks, Treatments
Kiss Appeal Lip Mask
Kiss Appeal Lip Mask is soothing and is especially nice after warming it in the microwave about 10 seconds before using.
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon kaolin (China clay) or other cosmetic clay (I do not recommend green clay because it is probably too drawing for delicate lips)
1 teaspoon emu oil
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon rose hydrosol
Measure clay and set aside. Measure rose hydrosol and warm in the microwave about 20 seconds. Add emu oil to warm hydrosol and honey and stir well to incorporate. Add liquid mixture to clay and stir with a pop sickle stick to form a smooth paste. Use the popsicle stick to apply to lips and leave on for about 2 minutes, no more or it may dry your lips out. Rinse well with warm water, blot excess water gently and apply lip balm.
3 Natural DIY Lip Scrubs
While many people know of the importance of using a scrub on the skin of their face and body, they often forget about their lips. Your lips also need a good scrub, which removes dead skin cells and leaves behind soft, plump lips. The following lip scrubs are easy to make and use just a few simple natural ingredients.
Raspberry Lemonade Lip Scrub
This is a really fun lip scrub that you can make for yourself or give it to someone else as a gift. To turn it into a raspberry lemonade scrub, all you need is a single serving packet of drink mix in this flavor. If all you can find is strawberry lemonade, go ahead and use that!
Then you want to add some white table sugar, coconut oil, and essential oils you think compliment the scent. This can be lemon or another fruity essential oil. Combine them together and store in a small container.
Coconut and Sugar Lip Scrub
Another lip scrub that you can try out once again uses coconut oil, but it is going to use brown sugar instead of regular white sugar. This gives it a fun texture and flavor for your lips. With the coconut oil, make sure you are using organic, unrefined coconut oil.
This is the most natural form and will be best for moisturizing your lips. If you don’t have brown sugar, there is no reason you can’t use white sugar instead. Combine the ingredients and scrub your lips with the mixture, then rinse off. You can store the excess in an airtight container.
Lemon Lip Scrub
Lemon tends to be a favorite for most salt or sugar scrubs, including a nice lip scrub. The reason sugar is used for these scrubs is because if you have chapped lips, salt can be much too harsh. For the lemon lip scrub, use white table sugar with some lemon essential oil and a little coconut oil.
This is one of the easiest lip scrubs to make. You of course can go further and customize it with other oils or essential oils, as well as using brown sugar if you prefer the softer texture to regular white sugar.
Lip scrubs are among the easiest DIY natural beauty products to make, and are perfect for the summertime. Experiment with your own combinations and see which one you like best.

AROMATHERAPY AROUND THE CLOCK
.Essential oils can boost your wellness from morning to bedtime.
Aromatherapy aficionados will tell you that incorporating essential oils into daily living is an easy and enjoyable way to boost your wellness quotient.
Tumblr media
Begin your mornings with a refreshing, caffeine-free burst of energy. Like your favorite juice, citrus oils like TANGERINE (Citrus reticulata) and LEMON (Citrus limon) offer a natural wake-up call for your senses. Upon rising, add a few drops to an aroma diffuser to combat fatigue and those Monday morning blues.
In addition to their therapeutic properties, many essential oils offer cosmetic benefits as well since they can quickly penetrate the skin. Essential oils purify the outer dermis, using vital antibacterial components to ward of airborne germs and hearty antioxidant elements to combat damaging free radicals.
After cleansing, spritz your face with a hydrosol the byproduct of the steam distilling process that captures essential oils from plants. Hydrosols offer the same properties as their parent oils, but in far lower concentrations. Choose sweet ROSE GERANIUM (Pelargonium roseum) or bracing TEA TREE (Melaleuca alternifolia) to treat combination or oily skin; lightly loral ROSE OTTO (Rosa damascena) to bolster dry or mature skin types; and woody SANDALWOOD (Santalum album) for post-shave skincare. Or make your own skin tonic by mixing 6–8 drops of your favorite skin-loving essential oil in 2 oz. distilled water in a dark glass spray bottle. The bonus? The aromas are soothing and can be applied throughout the day when skin (or mood) needs a little lift.
Instead of reaching for another cup of java midmorning to boost lagging energy, take a whif of cooling essential oil of PEPPERMINT (Mentha piperita), whose invigorating menthol scent will enhance alertness and boost stamina.
Another option is BERGAMOT MINT (Mentha citrata) when you need to hit the pause button during a too-busy day: As an adaptogen essential oil, it is simultaneously calming and uplifting. The fragrance is citrusy like Bergamot, but with a slightly sweet hint of mint. Adaptogens ofer both stimulating and relaxing constituents that work to balance the nervous system and are a restorative go-to during stressful times.
Stomach growling? Try inhaling GRAPEFRUIT (Citrus paradisi) essential oil for one minute, which scientiic studies indicate helps quell hunger. he tangy aroma provides a quiet, steady energy to hold you until you can sit down for a proper lunch. And along with the herbal freshness of ROSEMARY (Rosmarinus oicinalis) known as a memory enhancer grapefruit is the perfect addition to an afternoon pick-me-up blend.
It’s Five o’clock, when an essential oil one-two punch of clarifying EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus globulus) and tart LEMONGRASS (Cymbopogon citratus) is called for. A pre-exercise spritz of an energy mist will help amp up your energy level while supporting respiratory health for a late-day workout. Or blend these companion oils in a carrier oil such as calendula, an excellent choice to treat muscle spasms and swelling, and apply postworkout.
For a blissful evening, choose from the calming members of the spice family such as VANILLA (Vanilla planifolia), CINNAMON (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), and GINGER (Zingiber oicinale). These rich essential oils are known for their warming and aphrodisiac properties that inspire relaxation. Blend these grounding oils with 2 to 3 ounces of a carrier oil such as grapeseed or sweet almond to create a comforting blend for moisturizing skin or for massage.
Ah, at last lovely LAVENDER (Lavandula angustifolia), the most popular, effective aromatic for instilling tranquility no matter the time of day. I often add lavender to each of my blends simply to promote balance it’s that versatile.
The essential oil’s sedative properties, however, make it the prime choice for bedtime. Whether you choose to simply toss a few drops of lavender on your pillowcase or diffuse several drops in an aroma difuser, the scent will lull you into a peaceful state.
