you posted this a bit ago but wrt "the silent protector" trope - im detrans (ftm to butch) and it was really shocking how people are more open about the isolation of being seen as a "protector" in butch communities? ive seen ppl equate it to feeling like "the pitbull" - you are only useful (and safe) when you are leashed/monitored (by a femme) and in return you are expected to defend other queers (and your femme/femmes at large). there's a lot of interesting butch community discussions about how we reinforce masculinity in ourselves in a way that is not always healthy, smth that has meant a lot to me as a significantly disabled butch. its smth i think the butch and transm communities could really bond and benefit from inter-community discussion over! i also feel like its more accepted to talk about and problem solve within butch spaces? i see Way less butches justify "my gf was angry bc i expected us to go 50/50 on our second date and she expected me to pay for the whole meal" using longer standing theories/philosophies than i do in transm spaces (not to say transm people as a whole find that stuff acceptable!)

yeah! its an even tougher nut to crack amongst cis men, cishet men especially, i would say hardly even a dent societally speaking, so it makes sense this expectation is so ingrained for trans men&mascs. ty for your insight and I wholly agree this should be a point of solidarity between these communities <3

On the usage of the word "sysmed"

I'd like to preface this by saying that I am endo critical, but this argument isn't going to be just "I don't like being called that." I do have my own personal qualms with people on all sides of any issue making up their own words to define the 'other side', but just saying "stop that because I don't like it" has never and will never be an actual or convincing argument. I have actual reasons for this, so please read them before dumbing down my opinion to "oh, he just doesn't wanna be called what [we think] he is".

(quick note: I am plural and trans, which is why I'm speaking on this. Also, the other day I had a very frustrating argument in which I think the other person really should have heard this, so I'm putting this out there in the hopes of reaching other people who might otherwise not think about it. Feel free to disagree, argue, or comment on anything I say, but please do read it all first and be respectful, as I will do my best to do the same to any/all of you.)

The word "sysmed" is taken directly from the word "transmed", which is the main issue I take with it. Transmedicalism is a belief held by many conservative(/-leaning) people--trans and cis alike, although generally more often cis people, who really shouldn't be talking about trans issues at all. Transmedicals, or transmeds, hold that a person is not "really" trans unless and until they fully physically transition (hormones, top & bottom surgery, all of that), and that anybody who can't, doesnt want to, or hasnt yet medically transitioned isn't "valid".

This is highly classist and ableist, because many people don't have the money to transition or they cannot safely transition due to medical issues. And some people just don't want to medically transition, fully or at all, for any plethora of (personal, might I add) reasons. This does not make them 'invalid', but many people think it does, which is why it is a problem for the trans community.

The issue here is that the word "sysmed" is taken from "transmed" despite having nothing in common with it. The only way this would make sense if it was referring to the belief that somehow one did not become a system/plural until obtaining a diagnosis of OSDDID, which is technically an existing belief, but is fairly uncommon. Instead, "sysmed" has been used for anti-endos, and now anybody who criticizes the endo community at all. This is diluting the actual meaning of the word and labeling people as it when they really have nothing to do with what the word means.

It also implies that it has ties to the medical field. Endos claim that they are plural without having the clinical conditions generally attributed to plurality, so using the word "sysmed" weakens their argument by contradiction and ties it to the seriousness of medical issues/conditions when it actually has nothing to do with that, which is extremely harmful and honestly just shitty because its not cool to use medical stuff to add a "gotcha" to a non-medical argument.

Furthermore, the fact that it's taken from the word "transmed" implies a connection or equation between being trans and being plural, which is inaccurate. Being trans and being plural are two completely different things. The only similarity is that they're both generally neurological, but in the same way you wouldn't equate, say, bipolar disorder to tourette's, it makes no sense to compare them. And it is harmful because it is normalizing use of the word, which dilutes its meaning and takes away from the problems it should actually be used for.

That's not to say that you can't compare two experiences that *you* have. If you are both trans and plural, and you see a similarity between the two, because you experience both there's nothing wrong with talking about it. But just because two things aren't mutually exclusive doesn't mean they're the same. Using the word "sysmed" weakens endos' arguments, diverts the conversation in a direction that makes no sense, and dilutes the meaning of an unrelated issue.

If you're pro-endo, you are absolutely allowed to criticize people and arguments you disagree with. But using the word "sysmed" is inaccurate, harmful, and ends up weakening your argument. It's best to call people what they are, whether they're pro, anti, neutral, critical, or anything else. That's how we'll be able to have genuine and helpful conversations and debates: not by making up new words and pulling random other things in, but by looking at things how they are and identifying and discussing how we view and experience them.

If anyone has any arguments or has any other info about the term, please let me know! I'm curious to hear what other people, especially people on different sides of the endo debate, think of this. Thanks to anybody who read this far, lol :)

as a preface, i’m a trans guy (ftm) so i don’t know much about the things that go on in the mtf side of things.

i just wanted to say i really appreciate that you are a radfem that acknowledges that dysphoria is real. it’s honestly been devastating that so many non-dysphoric “trans people” have decided that science doesn’t matter and that you can decide that you’re trans.

dysphoria is so painful, yet so many people think dressing up and being a permanent victim is fun and that “euphoria” is all that matters.

the “gender isn’t real” idea has turned so many against us. there’s no home/community for trans people like me. it’s taken over by people who decide you’re a cis bootlicker or some other insult of the week that makes them feel powerful over minorities with a medical condition.

i guess this is just my way of saying, even though we don’t agree on everything, i really appreciate your critical thinking and that you recognize that there really are regular people who just have a brain condition :’)

I also really like listening to trans medicalist voices (for example, I really like Buck Angel - I agree with about 99 percent with what he's saying), more than anything because they seem to care about actually bringing forth arguments and logical explanations and not just affirming each other endlessly. Most transmeds also argue less about validation and identity, but try to find practical solutions to practical problems and try bringing society forwards, instead of just making everything about how they're the victim.

and the exact thing you are saying is why I hate Philosophy Tube so much. he (and yes, I'm going to use male pronouns, because he doesn't even try to pretend to be trans) made this entire fucking rant about how dysphoria is not real and about how cis people get dysphoria too etc.

and for the "you're just a bootlicker to [outgroup]"-argument - that's literally so stupid. it's just cult rhetoric. it's the exact same that the Catholic church responds to a Catholic saying that maybe we should allow abortions in certain cases.

how would you go about telling your partner who is a tucute that your a transmed? i used to be a tucute but after doing research decided that its stupid and wrong to actual trans people (like myself)

Depends on if they’re trans or cis (that includes anyone who chooses not to transition medically but claims to be NB trans).

I wouldn’t bring up the label, just talk about the science behind transsexuality and how gender dysphoria is seen in brain scans. Bring up how trans spaces are now not safe to talk about dysphoria and passing tips without someone shaming you. You can also break up that non binary people constantly use sexism to establish their identity (comfortable in their sex but think not following gender stereotypes makes them not a woman/man)

"theyfab" here and thank you so much for your post. I feel too nervous to talk about the issue in my social circles because I'm aware of intracommunity discourses and the ways in which transmascs do often hurt transfems and it always feels inappropriate for me to point out the things other trans people do to hurt transmascs, because the consensus seems to be that we hold some privilege over transfems. I never ever want to overstep or make it look like I'm demonising or villainising transfem people, it's just really difficult to talk about problems only affecting transmascs because I feel like I'm talking over others when I describe the ways in which I'm hurt.

The word 'theyfab' really bothers me because it targets transmasculine nonbinary people in the same way that transmedicalists often do. I know many nonbinary people don't transition and aren't dysphoric but I personally have had gender affirming surgery and hormones and reducing me to my AGAB because I use they/them pronouns is kind of distressing, and even to those who aren't dysphoric or don't want to change their bodies or socially transition, it's still really disrespectful. I would never even let someone call me FtM or FtX because the association with the word female is upsetting, I basically never even use AGAB terminology because it does the same thing. I've also noticed "theyfab" being used to talk about nonbinary transmascs basically being attention seeking cis women, which is exactly the same shit that horrible transmeds like Kalvin used to say!

It also implies that every transmasc person who uses they/them is the same and that couldn't be further from the truth, which also hurts me because my friend group is big and diverse and has lots of "theyfabs" in it and they're all different and gorgeous. I have fat and disabled friends, friends on T, friends who have detransitioned and use they/them, friends who are 5 years post-op. Some of my "theyfab" friends have spoken on our country's national news channel about trans rights and have organised protests with a turnout of thousands of people. Some of my "theyfab" friends are just trying to get married in the correct gender so they can feed ducks at the pond with their spouse every weekend and not bother anyone or cause any trouble. I have "theyfab" friends in their 50s and 60s who are heartbroken to hear that trans people are hurting each other.

Having other trans people typecast me as a feminine queer person, or even a cis woman, who is transmisogynistic because of their gender and trans status, really hurts me! I don't want anyone to talk about me using my assigned gender, and I don't like it when people make fun of the only pronouns that bring me joy, and I don't like how embarrassed or guilty I feel when I ask people not to use that term to describe me. Someone once said it's like a white person being offended about being called a cracker, and I'm not a person of colour but I don't think that's a fair comparison. I also am stealth irl and don't like revealing my AGAB to anyone, but because of all the moral weight being assigned to the 'direction' of your transition, I have lately felt obligated to come out as transmasc to other trans people when I didn't want to, because I felt guilty or dirty for "tricking" transfems into feeling safe around me by not revealing I'm the AFAB type of nonbinary.

I know that transmascs do hurt transfems and I have to take some responsibility for the oppression people in my community inflict on yours. It will never stop me from fighting on behalf of our united trans community but I will feel terrible the whole time I'm doing it, like I'm not really allowed to be in the trans community. I've been to national trans rights conferences before where multiple trans women have told me they feel unsafe in the presence of trans men and I felt so horrible because of what they must have been through, but I didn't know what else I could do to avoid existing in their general proximity.

This turned into a rant and I'm sorry haha, your post just spoke to me a lot and I want all trans people to know that we are in this together and are fighting the same fight, and every transmasc nb person I know has felt sad and disheartened by this whole ordeal. It's not just a chronically online thing, it's started happening at real life conferences, and transmascs are being asked to leave trans spaces because their existence threatens transfem people. And every time we speak about how unfair that is, we get told we're talking over trans women and oppressing them further. I don't know what to do. There doesn't seem to be any room left in the community for us. I don't want to hurt anyone, I just want the same allyship from the rest of the trans community that I give to transfeminine people.

what i don't quite agree with or fully understand is the idea that Transmacs somehow hurt or oppress Transfems? i'm a Trans Woman myself, and every Trans Man and Nonbinary Person (Transmasc or otherwise) i've ever hung out with has universally been incredibly Cool and Chill. you're not the first person who's said this to me, so clearly some people believe it to be true? but it has not been my experience at all.

in any case, i'm not an expert on Issues specific to Transmascs (obviously, LOL). my Trans Man friend @kai-is-a-goner is far more knowledgeable in this regard, so if you want to DM him and talk stuff out, i'm sure he wouldn't mind!

The BIG problem with "privilege" flex

Another reason why I insist on allowing everyone speak and be listened without "privilege" dick contest is the absolutely ABSURD penetrability of the whole thing in internet spaces.

What is the reason to be "cis"? No, seriously. Like, okay, cast aside situation within families and focus on westernised internet spaces - that are like... pretty much a place of dwelling and developing projects or even small business for many people these days, for sympathetic reasons or not, but it is a fact - these spaces are more needed than people who 'have real life unlike you online loosers' typically claim. Logically, what is the reason to id as cis here?

You get shunned from discussions, you can't have opinion on gender or expressions, you are permanently seen as oppressor and ignorant enemy, some mistakes (that everyone makes) are blamed on your identity and not on the person you are... Why not just change it? Society agreed that you don't need dysphoria for it - and if you think otherwise, you are a disgusting transmed and nobody will want you near, right? (I am ironising in case it isn't obvious) You don't even have to change much...? If you are a feminine woman - you can jump into being feminine she/they nonbinary without as much as the slightest change in your wardrobe, yet you will already get the power to shun them ignorant and malicious cis women for that. Especially there is no reason to be a cis man - you get blamed for literally everything and seen as stupid, violent sexist EVEN by cis women. Like... you didn't even do shit, you just exist as who you are and therefore cause people suffering and benefit from it or something. That's the narrative, right, and everyone who disagrees is 'handmaid' or 'MRA' or whatever labels woke people use as a mark of a person to bully and not show any respect to. As long as you can ensure the disconnection between your persona and things that could harm you (for example, if living in LGBT+phobic place - ensure they can't learn a thing), you can just choose one thing over another and them internet people will instantly respect you more.

Choosing to change identity itself is not bad. What IS bad is combination of penetrability (not avoidable, can't pass or fail "identity exam") and ridiculous shift in who deserves more respect (AVOIDABLE). Again, there is no even logical point in staying the identity people will hate and see as an enemy. The only real reason, given you accept variety of people, is... honour? The whole 'yeah, people see me as enemy and silence and disrespect me for who I am, but at least I am honest with myself'. Like... doesn't. that state. sound. fucking. FAMILIAR?? Is this like... not the exact thing people were trying to exterminate?

I feel like history never teaches people that changing who bullies who is not the answer to any sort of injustice. Instead of swinging the pendulum the different way, you need to stop the pendulum from swinging altogether. And this IS, in fact, ironic that history teaches people nothing, given how often they use "historical oppression" to justify being outright malicious to groups of people based on what their 'ancestors' did.

It will also end up, if not already gotten this way, that more people in close proximity with internet and media (for this or that reason) end up feeling pressured into breaking who they really are. Why being seen as an enemy or not worthy to listen to and respect? And the inequality in discussions. This is exactly why I insist that everyone deserves to be heard if they extend thought, and have actual opinions rather than compulsively repeat some mantra.

Needless to mention that it should go both ways - if someone refuses to consider a perfectly logical take based only on the speaker being woman/trans/gay/etc, they are just as much of a prick. However, this clown internet turned into sort of a very hostile waiting game until which side chooses to compromise and have civil discussion without identity-based disrespect - yet I very often see the "privileged" people being open to listen and consider most of the time, but woke people never having enough and witch-hunting others for smallest disagreement based on identity and always saying that they do not have to do anything! They do not owe anyone respect or basic logic! They are "oppressed" so that somehow gives them right to deliberately damage discussions and antagonise people and not put any effort into peace, and then be surprised why, after they did nothing to ensure civility, they only gained more enemies? Well, they are not really surprised - they know the answer. For them the answer is always that the opponent was too "privileged" - therefore evil and ignorant.

What matters is WHAT is said, not WHO says it. In every discussion. Appeal to the presumed motivation is counter-productive. And lets not ignore that everyone has a right to still agree to disagree and mind their own business away from you, regardless of who they are. This shift in rights for respect and civility will cost people identity crisis and needless fights, if not worse.

But all they’re accomplishing with their ‘clever joke’ is legitimizing the basis of fascist talking points enough to address them. Not only is it bullshit for the reasons OP said, not only is it bullshit bc trans women shouldn’t have to be gender conforming + perfectly passing in order to be supported in women’s spaces, it’s bullshit because literally anybody can walk into any public restroom. There are no restrictions, physically, preventing someone from just walking into a restroom. In fact if you use any public restroom, cis people of both genders are probably in it regularly no matter what-cleaning it. People who work in malls, and restaurants, and schools, and airports, and anywhere else you would find a public bathroom have to clean those bathrooms. and restock them. and exist in them while people are there, regardless of gendered label on the door. The labels are obsolete and the fact that we even have them is transphobic, patriarchal, and ridiculous.

Showing passing, gender conforming trans people in bathrooms labeled differently than their gender isn’t ‘proving’ something in support of trans liberation, it’s reinforcing weird bioessentialist transmed bullshit that comes from the same rhetoric behind the systems oppressing us.

i care about the transmascs at risk of abuse and assault because of being forced into women’s restrooms. i care about the transmascs and butches and intersex people being put in danger because of these bills. i care about the fact that people who supposedly care about me and my transmasc and butch and intersex siblings are glossing over that cis women are just as capable of violence as anyone else, that we can, and have been, and will be assaulted by them because we’re “stepping out of line.”
