Aschenputtel (Petra Vigna), a kind girl mistreated by her stepmother (Krista Stadler) and stepsisters, finds her life changing when a royal ball is announced. with the help of a magical hazelnut tree at her backyard, she attends the ball and captures the heart of the Prince (Stephan Meyer-Kohlhoff). however, she flees at midnight, leaving behind a golden shoe.

I remember watching Aschenputtel for the first time on a random day during school holidays as a kid. it was just on TV, and I decided to watch it out of boredom. little did I know it would become one of my favourite Cinderella movies. even years later, I can still recall specific scenes that left such a strong impression on me as a kid. this movie is not flashy or overwhelming, but that’s what makes it so charming. it’s simple, yet it feels magical. the aesthetic of the movie is soft and dream-like. the muted colours make it feel timeless, as if the story could have been told a hundred years ago or just yesterday. I love how quiet the storytelling is. it doesn’t need loud drama to draw me in. even though the CGI isn’t great by today’s standards, I didn’t care back then. I was just a kid, and I loved it. watching it again now, I still feel the same warmth and magic. one of the most memorable scenes for me is when Aschenputtel climbs the dovecote and looks out at the castle from afar during the ball. I can feel her longing for a different life, a life of freedom and happiness. as a kid, I related to that feeling of dreaming about a better world. that scene has stayed with me all these years.

another unforgettable part is when the Prince searches for his mysterious princess. the stepsisters’ desperate attempts to fit the golden shoe are shocking and darkly funny. watching them cut their heels was horrifying as a child, but the pigeons exposing their lies made me laugh. it’s a scene that’s both gruesome and satisfying, and it’s one of the things that sets this version apart from others. what I love most about this movie is how it quietly pulls me into its world. it’s not loud or dramatic, but it feels so magical and heartfelt. watching it is like stepping into a dream or an old storybook. it made me want to jump into the screen and be part of Aschenputtel’s world. even though it’s just a fairytale, it feels so comforting to imagine a place where good triumphs over evil and kindness is rewarded. in the end, Aschenputtel is a solid favourite for me. it may not have the polish of modern fairytale movies, but it has a charm that stays with me long after the credits roll. it’s simple, emotional, and magical, and it reminds me of why I fell in love with Cinderella stories in the first place.

final verdict: I totally loved it!!

Thought I’d do a little art throwback with my own historically accurate (well mostly) takes on Disney princesses and heroines, which I did from 2021 to 2022! Included in this series are:
Snow White - early 16th century Germany (then part of the Holy Roman Empire)
Cinderella - late 1860s-early 1870s France
Aurora - mid 15th century France
Eilonwy - 8th-10th century (present day) Wales
Ariel - 1830s Mediterranean Europe (maybe Italy)
Belle - 1760s-1770s France
Jasmine - 16th century Arabian Peninsula during the Ottoman Empire
Pocahontas - 1607 Virginia, (present day) United States of America
Esmeralda - 1480s France (Romani garb)
Megara - Classical period of Ancient Greece (c. 5th-4th centuries BCE)
Mulan - Wei Dynasty China (386-535 AD)
Jane - 1900s England
Tiana - late 1920s New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Rapunzel - 1790s-1800s Germany
Merida - 10th-11th century (present day) Scotland
Elsa - late 1830s-early 1840s Norway
Anna - same period as Elsa (duh)
Moana - ancient Polynesian Islands (c. 1st century BCE)
I had so much fun drawing these, as well as doing the research for each one! I actually drew most of the outfits each one wears (in their first movies) but they're waaaaay down further in my blog.
I'm planning to do a digital redo of these someday, as well as do my own historical spins on other characters I haven't done yet.
Which one is your favorite?

This Disney Villains crossover collage is of Ursula and Lady Tremaine, as part of my crossover collage series of Disney Villains, to mark the countdown to Halloween. The time of year when Disney gives their villains control of the rains.
