Content Warning: Vague Politics. Just for fun: I always read the fish as sort of a politics joke. Red and Blue are often colors that contrast/combat each other, and happened multiple times in the franchise I want to say. (Throw and Sawk are both in gen 5 too!)

But basically Red stripe/Blue stripe=Republican and Democrat Fish, as those are the colors of those political parties. Probably accidental, but it could have been intentional.

So i'm just picturing Cress picking up a White Stripe Basculin and shouting "I FOUND A INDEPENDENT VOTER. "

(Also politics nonsense: In the pokemon ranger games, the third one specifically, there was a evil team of older people who sought immortality. They called themselves the Tea Party. And then immediately at the same time America had a literal political party called the Tea party. They translated this as "The Societea" which is my favorite pun. I don't know if it was to avoid using a literal political party's name, or if someone went "I have an idea.")
