Kpop releases in January, let's talk about it. I wasn't on track with most of the releases but I will be talking about the ones that I know of.

Also I will not be talking about New Jeans because I just feel weird liking them but their music is okay. That's just my opinion on that. Yeah its fresh in kpop but I just can't get into them because of their age and it just a personal thing (mostly to do with the director). That's it.

I was actually inspired to write this when I saw this video on youtube (Personal hell for kpop sometimes) and this youtuber was saying everything sucks and it was just rip off of something else. I'm going to say it, some Kpop stans these days are so annoying lol. Its 2023 and I deadass don't think theres anything you can make new. Even New Jeans, that isn't new within music. It just old pop music that's in a oversaturated girl crush movement in kpop. That's it lol. Anyways...

Shooting Star by XG

Loved it. I loved this song and the music video was the best music video I have seen in terms of editing. The song is old 2000's and it was great. The whole video was a Japanese teen magazine that I used to read. The song is so good

Moonlight Sunrise by Twice

Music for pretty people. That's it. This song is simple, yes I agree with people on that but I don't care. I just really liked the rap and the way their voices sounded on the track. People were saying it sounded like Dua Lipa's sweetest pie and honestly I personally don't hear if anything I can hear Ariana Grande sing this song. That's not a bad thing but for some reason people were acting like it was a bad thing. I don't know I'm just looking at the song as a Twice song and I like it

Stamp On It by Got The Beat

Another song that I liked. I just feel like people just like to complain about anything at this point. This song is better then step back in my opinion and its more catchy. The girls looked great in the music video and Boa is mommy. The only thing I didn't like was the baby baby part, I wished it was only at the end and that was it. Love War by Yena

A song that got mixed views on it and I understand why. Yena had the concept of spreading happiness or playfulness with her music. Then Love War came out, I can see why people disliked it. It was okay, wasn't crazy but it was okay. I'm not mad at it

Rose Blossom by Hi-Key

I wasn't expecting this from them but was I glad they dropped it. There's something about this song that makes me feel nostalgic and idk why. The one thing I will say is wtf are they wearing for this song, it doesn't match the vibe at all but other than that I liked it

These two girls wrote this song themselves, amazing. I can imagine doing that. I don't the instrumental of the song sadly but their voices sound so good in it, I wish I liked it more

Turn Back Time is yet another song in the recent trend of merging hiphop/pop and punk/metal lol. a ton of american rappers have been doing it, and like recently Rina Sawayama stands out as a big example of a pop artist doing it this year. a bunch of kpop groups have been doing it, mostly boy groups, though not exclusively, the bass in Assa by Cignature is an example of that i think. Dreamcatcher is dabbling in this too, but from the other direction. Dreamcatcher didnt start out as a fusion of these genres, they just had straight-up rock instrumentals. but Piri, Deja Vu, and Scream are more than that, there are elements of a ton of other genres in those songs. most other groups are coming at it from the more electronic side of things though, adding guitars into that mix, and idk i kinda like it haha, i’m down to see how far people can take this fusion. genres are increasingly meaningless because everything is being fused with everything and i love it

on second thought its really just the bridge that has the guitar lmao but it comes out of nowhere and its soooo welcome haha, it works really really well and matches the energy of the song. i was just like “WHAT? YES” when i first heard that part

Song of the Week

What do you mean I haven’t posted in a week . . . Also, I have like 30 minutes to do this in, so I may leave some songs that are actually great in my rush.

Honorable Mentions:

I love the classic rap bar underneath the rapping on Chillin Homie’s Wassup. I’m not sure I’m particularly impressed by either of the rappers, but taking such an iconic guitar line and making it your own is pretty impressive.

For a chill club vibe today, Hash Swan has a nice collab with Jamie (Jimin Park) that has some really nice vocals, and a relaxed feel. Teenage in Closet isn’t really my thing, but I bet a lot of people would like it, so here it is.

I like everything about cignature’s Nun Nu Nan Na except the chorus, which was a bit too cookie cutter for a song that is anything but. Luckily, all of the verse are wonderfully produced, and effortlessly cool. It is easily the strongest debut of the year so far.

The MV of BVNDIT’s Cool matches it’s title damn near perfectly. And, just like cignature, it has some really nice elements in the verse, and less interesting chorus. Though the final chorus has some fun moments, and the whole thing reminds me of an f(x) b-side in the best way.

The western (as in country-western) influence hit k-pop a while ago. And while I am here for more of it, I’m not sure Dive really uses it all that well. It is a fine song, it just didn’t really grab me. Also, no Hanbin makes iKON fall even farther behind Winner for me.

I think the chorus of DKB’s Sorry Mama is interesting, but I also think it needed a group that had a bit more of an experienced presence. Like, give this song to Seventeen, or Monsta X, or even EXO, and it would hit differently. It is an okay debut though.

It’s the week of the girl group, and I can’t choose between all of them, so I brought it down to the top 2, and gave them both the win.

Loona is back, and frankly if you don’t know who Loona is, welcome. So What takes the bad girl persona and adds to it deep harmonies, and a beat that I don’t associate with the group. Until the end that is, when the last verse/hook hits with the sound every Loona fan will recognize. So What is a nice mix of candy pop vocals and a hard hitting beat that is more than a little grungy in all the best ways.

Everglow has known exactly who they are since debut. And usually, at around the year mark is when I begin to hope a group will spread out their sound a little bit. But right now, I so into the hype sound that Everglow brings every time that I can’t help but love it. Dun Dun continues that trend in the best way. Also, and this is probably a very controversial opinion but fuck it: Everglow has the cool that BP has been chasing for their last few comebacks, with way less support, and an equivalent amount of talent.
