36. FILL YOUR LUNGS {POST DE ROL}
Pastebin

a comic i made for a class this semester.....about female cigar factory workers (cigarreras) in 1880s-ish manila o__o SORRY it's quite rough and not very good because i rushed this to meet the deadline
historical context (and some story stuff) below the cut in english:
In this comic, a cigarrera in 1800s Manila named Flor comes to realize that she does not have to hold on to internalized feelings of misogyny, homophobia, and anti-worker sentiments.
In the 1800s, women in Manila had few work opportunities, including working in cigar factories. These cigarreras were considered to have decent jobs because they earned a regular income, compared to the more erratic financial conditions of other working women at the time. However, it was not a perfect job; one major complaint of the cigarreras was that their maestra (a female supervisor) would physically and sexually abuse them whenever they had to undergo the inspection going in and out the factory. Cigarreras were known to have conducted strikes to fight for better working conditions, but these were usually recorded only as “alborotos” or tantrums, owing to the strong patriarchal sentiments of the time.
In the comic, Flor has romantic feelings for her co-worker, Mayang. She is guilty and ashamed of these feelings because of she was raised to see homosexuality as a sin. At the same time, Flor’s fellow cigarreras are getting fed up with their maestra, who is too rough during inspection. Just like she is hesitant about her feelings for Mayang, Flor is also hesitant about doing anything regarding their labor conditions—in her mind, it is not what is expected of a lady or a good worker. These hesitations are challenged in the comic, until at the end, Flor is able to start letting go and accept her feelings, as well as the strike.
Flor’s emotional journey is seen through the shape of panels. Scenes wherein she is thinking about her feelings for Mayang are drawn more freely and fluidly than other panels, thereby breaking the mold of societal expectations. On pages 3, 5 and 6, the scenes showing Mayang’s willingness to fight, as well as the cigarreras’ strike, are shown in a wider format that breaks the regular margins observed by other panels. The ending panel on page 7 is unframed, signaling openness and new beginnings, as Flor begins to accept her feelings.
Hands are another element in the comic. Firstly, the entire comic was done by hand with paper and ink, bringing the comic closer to the “world” of cigarreras and their manual labor. In the comic itself, hands are shown in different situations: for labor (cigarreras making cigars), for violence (the maestra violating the cigarreras), for solidarity (the cigarreras arm-in-arm during the strike), and for love (Flor and Mayang holding hands at the end). I chose to use hands as symbolic imagery because it is a part of our body that is uniquely human, and therefore can represent the potentials of humanity. While it can be used for good (labor, solidarity, and love) or bad (violence), with the ending page of Flor and Mayang holding hands and the other cigarreras arm-in-arm, the comic chooses love and connection as what we should aspire to as humans.
(a good history book is Working Women of Manila in the 19th Century by Ma. Luisa Camagay)
