CHARACTER NOTES
born as a peasant under the newly unified kingdom of Goryeo, chunyeol was raised with his family in the northwestern regions bordering Manchuria. he had an older brother and younger sister whom he loved dearly.
he lived as a ‘farm laborer’ till up to his mid twenties when he was accidentally killed in the process of protecting his wife who had been caught stealing food (as the majority of the peasant / lower classes were constantly struck with starvation) he was killed by collapsing on a broken broom during the incident and therefore became a goblin as his spirit tied itself to the broom.
unable to stay, chunyeol wandered for a time to the central costal regions of Goryeo, often coming back to his village. most of his time was spent with travelers who’d wander between his old home and his shelter by the sea, sometimes troubling the company of nobleman, merchants, etc. while lending help to the common people.
after the death of his last surviving family member, his sister, chunyeol took to immigrating to the east to find some purpose of his life. overtime he met other goblins and higher beings / gods who looked after him for awhile because of his charms and kindness, teaching him skills beyond what he could dream of achieving.
in the 1300s after working and studying ( becoming literate in hanja ) for over 200 years, he met a fellow goblin, youngsik, who he began to fall in love with. the two quickly began a relationship together. they lived peacefully for the most part, though isolated and not freely until the middle of the century where the coasts of the Goryeo peninsula frequented attacks by the Weagu ( pirates / japanese pirates ).
with some convincing from youngsik, the two decided to get involved and for the first time chunyeol saw the brutality of what war could bring and the corruption of men as Goryeo’s own men turned on their people, raiding and looting villages.
as a few years went by, his perspective of time became warped in the midst of chaos. the fight seemed never - ending, the prospect of the enemy became skewed as it crossed over to the side they were trying so hard to defend. while youngsik’s determination and nationalism strengthened, chunyeol’s determination weakened. chun flourished in peace and yet on all sides he only saw death and wickedness.
the couple split as youngsik continued to fight and chunyeol instead turn his attention to the protection of villagers, mainly the elderly, women, and children. however, with the loss of his lover and the disregard of the people from his country left him bitter and unable to maintain the pure nature of his nativity. his charm of idealism and kindness soured into sarcasm and lack of self preservation-- in spite of his weakness towards those helpless to the evils he’s witnessed.
in the 2 Japanese invasions during the late 1500′s is when those newly acquired traits came into play as he’d often was reckless-- sabotaging Japanese re-supply & mess with their soldiers out of pure spite for invoking an uproar on his settlement. while this lasted a few years without more than a few close calls, it was near the end of the first invasion where he got badly injured and then captured by Japanese soldiers. having felt like he lost humanity itself, there was very little resistance from him when all became clear that he couldn’t escape. however, as he was rounded up with other prisoners, he was rescued by a single swordsmen who killed the guards on watched and freed the captured without a single word. before any of them could express their gratitude the swordsmen was already gone, no one getting a good look at their face.
too disoriented after accepting to be free of the moral world, chun scrambled to find the swordsman and followed the stranger for days, freeloading as they went before finally the wanderer revealed herself. from there on he and dahyun traveled together, her fierceness and compassion refreshed him, how she put up with him and did the most to make him smile when he didn’t deserve it made him believe in humanity again. she was still young by their terms, but just as reckless, just not as self deprecating.
over the next 200 years he began traveling outside as goryeo turned into joseon. traveling to china to study their literary classics, before becoming knowledgeable in Western science in mathematics. during that time he was able to focus on his self growth and what his desires in life are, outside of the consistent turmoil of his home country.
he returned during a winter lunar eclipse in 1803, to reunite with Dahyun and began to teach her english as they settled in a lull of relative peace. however, it didn’t last with Western engagement in Joseon and the sino-japanese war which made joseon an independent country from china, allowing for japan to force Joseon ports open. dahyun once again joined with the righteous army in order to keep foreign forces at bay. chun while not involved with the fighting, provided safe bases to the righteous armies and funded them with his ability to create gold.
when dahyun was captured by soldier in 1896 after the assassination of the queen, chun unleashed the extent of his abilities which allowed him to singlehandedly rescue her from a japanese military based stationed in joseon. nonetheless, he was too late and the only way to keep his best friend alive was to return her to the sea which would be where she’d remain for nearly a century.
feeling like he’s wasted too much time not doing enough, chun quickly established a newspaper company under the guise of merely reporting on an entertainment bases ( non - political ) which allowed them to keep running as a company despite censorship bans during certain periods of the occupation starting from 1910. however, secret messages were sent out through the paper and radio to the rightoues armies to allow their survival to beyond wwii and into the korean war.
with dahyun’s return in 1979, his focus shifts in order to take care of her needs, to catch up on a hundred years worth of history, language, culture, etc. though still works as the CEO of his growing media company. though he isn’t the only one helping her, she becomes more comfortable finding a purpose and so he allows her his position as CEO of KBCT after she’s done some groundwork in the company since 1980′s with the gwangju uprising.
in the present, chun has founded and frequently visits shelters for women and lgbt+ people in korea. almost as a hidden philanthropist. along the way he also helps other higher beings in a stable lifestyle in order to keep peace as korean traditions and religions had been demonized to near extinction and need to be kept somewhat underground for safety.
