The Country of Bhutan

Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayan region, characterized by high peaks and deep valleys. Its total area is 47,000 sq km.

The physical features of Bhutan can be well divided into three parts. The northern region lies in the Great Himalayas, with peaks reaching over 7,000 meters. Kula Kangri (7,554 m) and Chomo Lhari (7,314 m) are two major peaks in this region. The central region starts from the Great Himalayas and includes several ridges, with the Black Mountain dividing Bhutan into two parts—East and West Bhutan. The Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha valleys are located here. The southern region of Bhutan consists mostly of marshland, similar to the Terai region.

The four major rivers serve as Bhutan's primary water sources. They are Amo Chu (Torsa), Mo Chu (Sankosh), Paro Chu, and Wang Chu (Raidak).

The climate in the northern region of Bhutan is severely cold, with an annual rainfall of about 40 mm. In contrast, the climate in the southern region is hot and humid.

Only 2.8% of Bhutan's land is used for agriculture. The major crops grown here are rice, maize, millet, and wheat.

Electric power and energy in Bhutan primarily come from hydropower projects. Bhutan has huge hydropower potential, but it has not yet been fully utilized, except for the Chukha Hydropower Project. This large project was developed with assistance from the Government of India and generates 336 MW of electricity.

India is Bhutan's principal foreign trade partner. This small mountainous country exports wood, ghee, wax, wool, and ivory items to India, while importing iron, steel, textiles, and sugar.

The capital city of Bhutan is Thimphu, and the predominant religions in Bhutan are Buddhism and Hinduism.

A Birthday..

Of all the days Jipuragi is quiet, Vincenzo is a bit disappointed that it’s today. Okay, so maybe he hasn’t let people know what today is. He’s never been one for birthdays, not when they’ve served as a heartbreaking reminder of his childhood for most of his life. As he grew older, he learnt to numb the pain by throwing himself into work or indulging himself in some overly extravagant shopping, sometimes both, thinking of birthdays as yet another day around the sun. This year proved to be an exception; despite himself, he found himself feeling optimistic about the day.

However, his other two Jipuragi family members seemed to have plans of their own. Cha Young won’t be coming in until later in the day because she’s meeting her hoobae for some work; and Mr. Nam is currently at the courthouse, sorting some administrative paperwork for the firm. And despite knowing that they’d be back in a couple hours, Vincenzo can’t help but feel Cha Young and Mr. Nam’s absence; the silence in the office gnawing at him.

He’s already finished going over some of the new contracts they’d drawn up for their clients, watered all the plants in the office, paid a visit to the monks at Nanyak Temple, and tried (rather unsuccessfully) reading a new book. It’s a slow day at work, and loathe as he is to admit it, he is bored. So much for having a good feeling about this year’s birthday. He’s in the middle of contemplating going over to Bye Bye Balloon’s office to see if Seok Do would be up for lunch when he gets a text from Cha Young asking him to rush over to her place. And so he does, every other thought forgotten.

Cha Young is pacing outside in her yard when he walks in through her gate. She’s wearing a cream turtleneck, a dark orange skirt that falls just below her knees, large golden hoops, and a smile to rival the sun. She excitedly drags him inside, slowing down only when he stumbles in the vestibule while trying to take of his shoes and wear slippers.

“You haven’t had lunch yet, have you?” she asks, and when he shakes his head, she grabs his arm with both of hers and pulls him towards the kitchen.

Her dining table is laid for two, food covered using one of those cloche-like net coverings he’s come to associate with Korean households. With a flourish and a dramatic “tadaa!” she lifts up the covering. In fancy ceramics that he knows Cha Young likes to use only for special ocasions, there’s seaweed soup, rice, japchae, rolled omlette, kimchi and a couple of other side dishes. A traditional birthday meal. There’s even a bento cake that’s decorated rather prettily.

Ohh. When she’d texted him to hurry over, whatever he had been expecting, it hadn’t been this. While he’s rendered speechless by the food in front of him, Cha Young stands on her toes and places a kiss on his cheek.

“Buon compleanno, Vincenzo.”

Vincenzo looks at her and smiles, eyes shining with love, and she lightly squeezes his arm in reply before standing on her toes and kissing his cheek again.

“Saengil chukhae, Joo Hyeong-ah”

His hand goes around her waist and he draws her towards him, placing a gentle kiss on her temple and softly whispering his thanks.

“Come, let’s eat.”

Vincenzo cannot remember the last time he enjoyed a meal this much. The food is simple yet delicious. Warm and with just the right balance of flavours. It takes like home. It is this very thought that leads him to a surprising realisation.

“Byeonhosanim.. Did you make all this food?”

“Mhmm.. Except for the cake. And the side dishes. Those are from Ms. Kwak.”

“Wow.. I think this is the first time you’ve cooked for me something that isn’t ramyeon. I had the impression you didn’t know how to cook. At all.”

Cha Young takes a minute to finish chewing her food, and then snapping her chopsticks in Vincenzo’s direction, replies, “You can’t live alone and not know how to cook for yourself. It’s a basic survival skill. I just don’t cook too often because, for one, I’m a slow cook. Unlike some people,” she pointedly looks at him, “I can’t just whip something up in the kitchen. Work takes enough of my time as it is. And two, I get lazy every now and then. It’s just easier to eat out or order in. And there’s always ramyeon.”

She pauses to take sip of her water, and continues, “I used to cook a fair bit back in the day, you know. Back when Eomma was sick.” Catching the look on Vincenzo’s face, she shakes her head ever so slightly to indicate that she’s okay. “Besides, I doubt I’ll have to worry about cooking now that I have you..” To which Vincenzo lifts his own glass of water and clinks it with hers, and promises, “Whenever you want.”

Later, they’re sprawled out sluggishly on the couch, each nursing a cup of tea, both of them stuffed from their meal, saying very little, simply basking in the pleasure of each other’s company.

“You lied today.”

“Hmmm?”

“You said you were going to meet your hoobae for some work. That’s why you couldn’t come in to the office in the morning..”

“Ohh. Well, I did meet her. She’s the one who made the cake. Quit her job a couple years ago to start her own bakery. I never said it was a lawyer thing.” Cha Young singsongs the last bit, smirking at him over her cup of tea, and he acquiesces. Trust her to lawyer her way out of this, he thinks, watching her curl her legs under her to sit more comfortably on the couch.

Suddenly, Cha Young jumps with a yelp, having remembered something, and hurriedly places her cup on the coffee table before rushing off to her room, leaving a startled and confused Vincenzo in her wake. She’s soon back, beaming as she holds something behind her back.

“I almost forgot to give you your birthday present.”

“I thought the meal was it.”

“Pfft, of course not. Now close your eyes and hold out your hands.”

“Byeonhosa-nim, by any chance are there handcuffs involved?”

He stops grinning when Cha Young flicks his forehead in reply. When Vincenzo does as he’s told, he feels a rectangular box being slid into his hands. He opens his eyes, and it’s a black box wrapped neatly with a simple white bow. He unties the bow and opens the box to find a watch nestled inside. It’s got a black leather strap, a platinum case, an elegant dial with delicate time markers and a small sub-dial. It’s a beautiful timepiece. A classic in every way. As he holds up the watch to take a closer look at its details, he notices Cha Young staring at him as she subconsciously plays with her fingers, a thing she does whenever she’s nervous.

“What’s wrong?”

“Do you like it? I wasn’t sure if you would.. I know it has this old-school, vintage vibe to it. In a way, it is. It actually..” she trails off, suddenly feeling shy and unable to meet his eyes.

Vincenzo places a hand on her knee and gives it a light squeeze, silently reassuring her and asking her to continue.

When she looks up at him again, eyes shining bright and the softest smile on her face, Vincenzo is reminded of the way she looked that day at the airport, when she told him in the very language he grew up speaking, that they shared a soul. And just like that day, he feels his heartstrings being tugged by what she says next.

“It belonged to Abeoji. So in a way it is vintage..”

She takes the watch from him and places it on her lap, before taking hold of his left hand and drawing it towards her, turning it so that the palm faces upward. She undoes the cufflinks, rolls up the sleeve slightly, and places the watch just below his wrist bone. “I came across it sometime last year when I was sorting through his things. Eomma had gifted it to him years ago, I don’t remember why. But it was his favourite, and he wore it only on special occasions.” She pulls the leather strap through the buckle, and adjusts the fit. “So it was still in good condition. It just needed a few minor tweaks.” She pulls the strap through the final loop and secures the watch in place. Turning over his hand, she traces the case of the case of the watch with her middle finger while her palm rests on his wrist, her gaze fixed on the dial. “When I came across it, I knew I wanted you to have it. You were still in Pagliuzza, and I didn’t know when I’d get to see you again. But I hoped I’d be able to see you again someday soon and give it to you. I wanted you to have it as a reminder of your time here.. and your family. I think Abeoji would’ve liked that too.” She looks at him and smiles. “The watch suits you.”

Vincenzo lifts her hand that rests on his, and places soft kisses on her knuckles and then on the inside of her wrist.

“Have I told you how much I love you?”

“Maybe once or twice. But a woman does like to hear it from time to time, y’know,” she teases. His smile matches hers, sincere, the kind that reaches their eyes.

“I love you,” he tells her, his voice soft and resolute. He cradles her cheek with his palm, and she leans into his touch.

“Gomayo, Cha Young-ah. Jeongmal gomayo.”

For the watch. For your love. Your heart.

He places a kiss on her forehead. A kiss on her lips. He feels her smile against his lips and kisses her some more.
