Get Wild Mod by MathModder (In Progress)
What you need to know:
This mod introduces wild animals into your game map that spawn naturally in beetle spawners. It includes birds, small mammals, amphibians, more insects and reptiles in nature zones. Birds can fly and land in random locations and ground animals can be seen walking around the map.
You can choose ONE from various versions that best suit your world. Select the version that spawns specific animals suitable for your World's location.
Here's a list of potential versions that will be included in the mod:
All Wildlife (City World)*
All Wildlife (Medieval / Country town)**
American Wildlife (City World)*
American Wildlife (Medieval / Country town)**
European Wildlife (City World)*
European Wildlife (Medieval / Country town)**
African Wildlife (City World)*
African Wildlife (Medieval / Country town)**
Eastern Wildlife (City World)*
Eastern Wildlife (Medieval / Country town)**
*Versions for cities will have additional specific effects that help create a more beautiful environment for your city, such as planes in the sky, fireworks, sunshine rays during the day, and sky lanterns for the All Wildlife and Eastern Wildlife version. **Versions for Medieval/Country towns will feature additional specific effects to enhance the beauty of your world, including hot air balloons in the sky, sunshine rays during the day, and more.
These additional effects mentioned above will appear rarely and randomly in your world.
Can I place individual animals in specific locations, such as on rocks or tables?
In a future update after launch, this function will be added, for now they will only spawn where there is a beetle spawner. Ground animals on the ground and birds in the air.
Is the mod heavy to run?
Within the game I am optimizing it so that a small number of animals spawn at the same time and only spawn at a maximum distance of 500 meters from the player's camera.
How many files will there be?
Because there are many animals and specific animations for each one, the files will be heavy, will be a maximum of 2 to 3 files. In tests in my game with 150 other mods from other creators, I didn't see any loss of performance due to the optimization I'm doing within the game.
It is worth mentioning that some files will need to be placed in the Overrides folder and others in the Packages folder, they will all be specified at launch.
Is this mod compatible with other effect mods?
Yes, it will be compatible.
Bugs:
Depending on the location, there may be some bugs such as birds landing in the air or animals walking a little above the ground, this is due to calculation problems on certain game surfaces and physics, whether hills or mountains, but over time I will update and see What can I do to reduce this. In this case I depend on the engine the game has and whether it is possible to correct certain errors.
Release date:
Between January and February 2024 (It is in the testing phase)
Here is the list of animals that will be included in the mod:

I'm probably going to do a terrible job of articulating myself here but every time I think about the worldbuilding in Hatoful Boyfriend, I think about the implications of having the birds simply have adopted the structure and policies of human society and go insane.
It's clearly originally just for the ridiculousness of it all for the players, but AGH it explains so much regarding the extremely rampant classism/racism/speciesism and how apparently normalized it is. It also, to me, adds a bit of moral nuance to the Dove - Hawk Party conflict.
(Long post under the cut. I'm so sorry I just kept going.)
First off, I'm obsessed with the concept of the birds becoming sapient and simply... taking over a society that was not structured for them. It leads to difficulties in universe! Bird wings are not made for doing tasks that human hands can do naturally - there's a couple instances where the characters ask for Hiyoko's assistance or express envy since she can just do the task more easily than they can. The birds are outright disadvantaged in certain areas of life, and yet, the society is in such turmoil due to the newness of it all that there still aren't really any workarounds for stuff like this.
Not that there haven't been any suggested solutions, such as the Labor 9 series, put forward initially by the Dove Party. Yeah, you know, that one throwaway line about how the party that up until this point have been the "good guys" wanted to take still semi-conscious human brains and make robotic slaves out of them Cyberman-style? What the hell. And what gets me is that Shuu was able to find the initial proposal, which he really only made tweaks to, which means that the project was at least close to being finished on the conceptual/planning/design phase before somebody went "hey this is a little fucked up actually".
The Dove Party wants peaceful coexistence with the humans, while the Hawk Party wants to eliminate humanity entirely. But we don't really go into how these two lines of thought evolved. I believe I have a suggestion for at least one part of the puzzle though.
Of all the birds in Hatoful, who enjoys the most privileges and the highest status? Fantails, it would seem. A breed of pigeon that is popular as a pet, considered beautiful and sought after, and achieve high accolades in shows and competitions - for clarity's sake, fantails were valuable in human society, and this status appears to have transferred when birds became sapient and took over. Conversely, which birds are ranked lower and often blocked from entering certain higher class places? Rock doves, who, in human society, are given an unfairly bad reputation, and considered anything from unclean and dirty, to nuisances, to pests. Again, this status transferred over when the birds took over.
So, while we don't know too many of the birds who make up the agents of the Dove and Hawk Party, let's take a look at who we do know of.
Fantails (Yuuya, Dove Party) are considered valuable over other doves and pigeons for being specially bred for their striking tail feathers
Cockatiels (Leone, Dove Party) are some of the most popular and beloved companion birds, kept as pets and considered very friendly
Rock doves (Ryuuji, Hawk Party) are considered unclean pests who receive a bad reputation, and are generally not treated with respect or appreciation <;- notable thing to mention here is that Ryuuji actually does like humans - I think he was only Hawk affiliated for the grant money and research facilities, which... fair enough man.
Chukar partridges (Shuu/Isa, Hawk Party) are game birds, specifically bred and released to be killed and eaten, and considered a delicacy
...do you... see what's going on here?
(I haven't mentioned Tohri as he's a special case. Give me a minute and I'll get to him!)
The birds we see in the Dove Party are those birds that were already viewed in a more favourable light by humans, a favourability that transferred over to their new society. Of course they are more likely to advocate for coexistence! They have less to lose, overall. And the Labor 9 series, and how that could've ever been suggested in the first place, suddenly makes a lot of sense. For many of these birds, society the way it exists now benefits them. Some of these high ranking Dove Party folks may be less about actual peace and justice (like Yuuya or Leone) and more about maintaining the current order of things - humans coexisting under their control, while they get to maintain their status... which is itself a product of human invention.
The birds we see in the Hawk Party, by contrast, are looked down on or hunted. Historically, even before bird sapience, they did not have a harmonious relation with humans - and it's likely this status carried over to their new society also, with many of these birds being more likely to have been disenfranchised. Their goal of elimination is therefore reactionary towards perceived threat. After all, the people who suffer when things go wrong aren't the ones at the top - it's all the people who sit at the bottom of the social rung; the vulnerable members of society who do not enjoy the same advantages as others.
Of course, the Hawk Party has built itself up into such a powerful group that they may have lost touch with this starting foundation - the only thing that remains is likely that reactionary fear. After all, people caught up in the actual conflict - Nageki, Hitori, Ryouta, and Hiyoko - see this kind of horrible bloodshed firsthand (firstwing?) and just want it to stop.
Again, it's not usually the people in these political factions who are the ones caught up in their conflict. It's the individuals who lack power or influence.
But that's just the political groups themselves. On an individual level, it's kind of interesting to look at and theorize where along the spectrum our core cast falls based on their species/breed.
Ryouta (rock dove) is actually rather indifferent towards humanity as a whole - he just likes Hiyoko. However, his witnessing of the Heartful House tragedy led him to abhor violence and unnecessary loss of life, and I'd imagine his mother's later illness solidified this. Ryouta doesn't seem overly interested in political struggles or the broader implications of a lot of things - he's actually a rather self-oriented character when it comes down to it (this is not a judgment, nor a bad thing! I love my boy!). Ryouta just doesn't want to lose people, really. A conflict would mean more loss, and rock doves seem to have to struggle enough as is.
Hiyoko (human) is the daughter of two diplomats, but interestingly, we don't get to see much of her political views on things - perhaps because even if she expressed them, it wouldn't really matter - she's not herself a diplomat, and humans are the lowest of the low - her going to a fancy school doesn't really change that. Social-wise, except with her friends, she is tolerated, not accepted. Yet, it's safe to say that Hiyoko strongly disapproves of people who flaunt their status - she's quick to not take crap from Sakuya, to get angry on behalf of Ryouta and herself over the gull clerk's assholery, and also to defend Miru and Kaku as living beings worthy of respect. Interestingly though, she also uses Okosan's status as a fantail to get Ryouta to let go of him and let him do whatever he wants so... it's kind of unclear what her firm beliefs are. Perhaps, as a human, she still values fantails more highly. I don't know honestly. Implicit bias?
Sakuya, Yuuya and Okosan (fantail pigeons) may share the same breed, but their experiences are highly different. Sakuya is largely separate from the human-bird conflict, as he is unlikely to be directly affected by it. As such, a lot of his story and development has to do with actually learning and un-learning about the world outside of the limitations of his "father's" classist views, which he simply mimics without understanding the larger implications. Yuuya and Okosan, on the other hand, may be fantails, but are also looked down on and often treated as inferior - Yuuya for being a "half-breed" and for his reputation, and Okosan for being closer to feral than a lot of other doves. Interestingly, these two show more interest and respect for the individual than Sakuya does, who often makes sweeping generalizations based on status - which makes sense to a degree, as they've been on the receiving end of this kind of treatment, whereas Sakuya hasn't. Okosan believes that each person has their own "wonderful names" (read: identity outside of breed or status), while Yuuya is a genuine fighter for justice who is able to get to the heart of people, especially in Holiday Star. However, even though they have experienced classism, they still have certain privileges with regards to species/race - take Okosan's shock when Hiyoko and Ryouta are barred entry from his favourite store. None of them are quite as out of place in everyday society as some of the other birds here, and it's notable that "diverse" St. Pigeonations still apparently has a significant fantail student population.
Shuu (chukar partridge) is really interesting, as he doesn't particularly care for the politics of the Hawk Party, and yet his role as a killer/hunter of both his fellow birds and humans is an interesting reversal of the chukar being a game bird. Shuu also has a disability (his semi-paralyzed right side) which hinders him in bird society even more than most. His extreme, yet coldly logical solution to kill all humans to stop the fighting between them, could be as much his rationality, as his joy in the sadistic, as a reactionary survivalism (remember he was caught up in a human terrorist attack as a child - while overall he considered this beneficial to him, he also did lose much of his colour vision and the use of his right side, so it did leave him weakened). Shuu attains control by "flipping the script" as it were.
Tohri (golden pheasant) starts out in the Hawk Party, but much like his colleagues, doesn't seem to care much for their politics. Golden pheasants are game birds whose eggs can be eaten, but are more often bred and kept for their plumage - they're not prey, but they're not exactly pets either. All this puts Tohri in this interesting position of being somewhat in the middle of this conflict, and indeed he goes on to be a part of (found?) the Crow Party - an opportunistic group that seeks to benefit from the overall conflict. Golden pheasants are birds intended to be admired for their beauty and intelligence more than anything else, benefitting in some ways from humans without a strong connection or a reliance, and Tohri's opportunism fits nicely with that. (As an aside, our sole crow character, Albert, is also something of an opportunist, being an assassin on the fringes of society.)
Hitori and Kazuaki (button quails) are somewhat interesting. It would be both expected and understandable if Hitori held hatred for humanity after the Heartful House incident, or even before then, considering they were all war orphans. Instead, he doesn't seem to harbour any particular ill-will - he seems totally fine around Hiyoko, and her being a human has nothing to do with his reticence with letting Nageki hang out with her in the shrine universe. Kazuaki, too, doesn't seem to mind Hiyoko being human and isn't afraid of her any more than he is anyone else. While quails are game birds, with both meat and eggs being eaten, button quails are too tiny for that and are mostly kept as pets - they are considered cute, silly, and entertaining, though a bit too jumpy to be outright companion birds. The quails don't seem to experience too much in the way of speciesism (except arguably with the whole mistaken identity of Kazuaki's corpse... there may be a bit of an "all quails look the same" thing going on perhaps). At the very least, they are able to occupy teaching positions at a renowned school as respected intellectuals, and did go to university. Still, it's kind of a known thing that you don't put button quails with bigger, more dominant birds, since larger birds will often pick on them or even outright try to kill them simply because they're small and shy - this may, in hindsight, explain some of Kazuaki's demeanour.
Nageki (mourning dove) and Anghel (luzon bleeding heart dove) are the two who are uncommon bird species in Japan. Nageki is another war orphan, who would be forgiven for harbouring resentment for humanity, but instead is appalled at the violence and made a huge sacrifice to get it to stop. It's kind of unclear how Nageki fits into this society, as mourning doves are not prey or pets - they're wild birds. They live on the outside of the human world, and while Nageki exists within current bird society, he likely doesn't have a designated status within it. Nageki is unfortunately also alienated from much of the action due to his illness and later his untimely death - this is why a lot of Nageki's thoughts are somewhat from an observer's perspective, with his most emotional moments being derived from his rare direct experiences - specifically the Heartful House tragedy and the human killings he was forced into, which solidified a really firm stance of not wanting anyone to suffer like that. Anghel is another outsider, this time genuinely a foreigner, as opposed to Nageki. Again, Luzons are wild birds, not prey or pets, and so it's a bit unclear what his status is. This might explain why Hiyoko repeats Sakuya's remarks towards him without apparently realizing they're actually insults - Anghel is removed enough from the conflict she is familiar with that it seems she doesn't quite... get it. Again, Anghel's role is as this strange kind of omniscient observer, whose perspective is closer to the player's than to the rest of the cast. He definitely frowns on the Hawk Party's overall goal - the Demon Spores are evil to him, and his main objective is to stop them from spreading, as they would cause damage to both birds and humans. I attribute his morals to his mother having raised him right lol. The lack of a clear status for both of them may be why they appear to take the stance of judgment based on individual actions, but are not heavily involved in the conflict itself - while humans tend to like mourning doves and luzons, there isn't much interaction that goes on between them. Nageki and Anghel are simply less embroiled in bird society's human-derived status conflict, which makes them both outsiders and observers.
As a bonus note, Azami, Rabu and Kenzaburou are all species of birds that can be kept as pets (java sparrow, budgie, parakeet), which may account for some of their friendliness towards Hiyoko, and Kenzaburou's willingness to hire her. Kenzaburou is even a bit old-fashioned it seems - he sleeps in a cage, which implies his ancestors were probably pet birds themselves. It's likely he, in particular, has more positive views on humans.
...Please tell me I'm not the only one who spent ages thinking about the implications and workings of a fictional post-apocalyptic bird society. Also I hope this made sense I kind of went off the rails here.
#storyrambles#anyways this was supposed to be a quick write up. yet here I am three hours later. does this even read properly anymore. help.#the one thing i'm a little unclear on here is how the ichijou family fits into all this. ichijou mino the headmaster was a nicobar pigeon#i find it likely mino was hawk affiliated if we're going with the trend here (nicobars are heavily exploited for food/#gizzard stones/zoos/illegal pet trade) and also note that he signed off on the human representative directive#but i want to know how shuu fits into that as he was formerly ichijou utsuro. who has the ichijou name? why different species?#are they prominent benefactors of the hawks? interesting to think on#also i was thinking about the gulls - they seem to be fairly high class but gulls definitely do not have a good reputation with humans lmao#however gulls get to do whatever they want a lot of the time because they are loud. and like to bully others (including humans)#i hereby propose they gained power by doing much the same once birds gained sapience hjfhbdf#hatoful boyfriend#hatoful spoilers#holiday star#hatoful meta

MQM-74A Chukar 'Target Drone'
In their CMK line, Special Hobby’s has released a 3D-printed Chukar drone at a scale of 1:72. Finely detailed 3D printed model of the Chukar unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones, which were developed in 1960s. The drone was launched into the sky using a tripod-launcher system, which could be either based on the ground or a vessel. The tripod can also be seen in the kit. Chukars are used…

Note
My childhood dog was euthanized today and the vets were all so nice and helpful, and they were very caring and made it as nice an experience as they could. Truly it couldn't have been any better. I want to show my thanks to them, would any kinds of gifts be appropriate or should I just send a card? My first instinct are Chukar Cherries (a wonderful brand of chocolate covered cherries that seem pretty universally loved by everyone I've given them to) but I don't know if food gifts would be okay or not.
Hello, mod @release-the-hound here. Cards and food gifts are quite common and very appreciated! There shouldn’t be any issue with sending some chocolate, as long as there’s enough for the staff to share! I am very sorry for your loss.

Day 2 of Maui vacation
I meant to post more [at all] about how the vacation is going. However, traveling with Wife is a very busy and active affair without much downtime for that. But I’ll try to post belatedly. So, here’s what happened on Day 2:
Birdwatching tour!
(below the cut, more detail than anyone besides @lies wants about the birds we saw and also what happened with the broken fridge in the condo)
There are only about 50 species one is likely to see on Maui, and we saw 29 of them, including some forest birds which I had particularly hoped to see.
Our guide picked us up around 7:30am. It turned out it was just us and the guide, even though we hadn’t paid for a private tour. Apparently everyone else who wanted to birdwatch last week had wanted to go on Tuesday, so we lucked out.
We started at Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, which used to be a fish farm. We saw 15 bird species there, including a huge number of Hawaiian black-necked stilts, lots of Hawaiian coots, some hybrids of mallards with Hawaiian ducks, both of the doves we’d been seeing around town (spotted and zebra), a couple of wandering tattlers, a family of black-crowned night-herons, and a Java sparrow which was adorable and looked a little like a tiny puffin. On our way out we passed a gray francolin, which was introduced here for hunting.
On our drive up to Haleakala National Park, we saw lots of common mynas (they’re everywhere in Hawaii), as well as a Pacific golden-plover and 2 Eurasian skylarks, a pair of ring-necked pheasants, and a few chukars. I hadn’t realised how many kinds of game birds had been introduced here for hunting!
We went up to the summit (about 10,000ft (3055m)), but it was completely clouded in, so we couldn’t see the views of the crater or the ocean. But we did see some fascinating lava rocks and interesting plants (silversword), and the observatory buildings.
Then we drove down to about 7000ft and had lunch (luckily there was a shelter with a picnic table under it, as it was still a bit drizzly there) before walking a short foresty trail with a few points overlooking a gulch. Two nenes (the Hawaiian goose) flew past while we were eating. On the walk we heard, but didn’t see, a Chinese Hwamei and a Maui Alauahio (though we may have had a glimpse of the latter), and we saw a bunch of `apapanes and even more `i`iwis as well as the Hawaii amakihi (Maui subspecies). The `i`iwis kept chasing the `apapanes away--both are fairly spectacular red birds (endemic to Hawaii) that like to feed on red flowers. I was particularly excited to see the `i`iwi since it is on the cover of my Hawaii bird book!
The drive down the mountain was treacherous at first, but atmospheric--we were literally inside a cloud with very poor visibility! The final site was a golf course. We birdwatched from the van, driving slowly along the road and stopping whenever we saw anything interesting. The most exciting birds there were the Java sparrows (so many tiny puffins!), scaly-breasted munias, chestnut munias, and red-crested cardinals. We also saw a mongoose, which is worrying--they eat the nene eggs and chicks. Then the guide dropped us off at about 4pm. A long day!
Since then (just to include most of the birdwatching content in one post), I’ve also seen rosy-faced lovebirds (released/escaped pet parrots) and warbling white-eyes from the balcony of the condo we were staying in.
Disappointingly, the broken refrigerator in the condo didn’t get replaced because the old one couldn’t be removed due to being blocked in by the newish washer and dryer. The owners gave us a partial refund (less than 10%) in compensation but it was a real shame because the kitchen was otherwise very nice and we would’ve liked to cook our own meals some of the time. That night we ate out at a nice restaurant instead.

Chukar
The chukar partridge or chukar (Alectoris chukar) is a Eurasian upland gamebird in the pheasant family. This partridge has well marked black and white bars on the flanks and a black band running from the forehead across the eye and running down the head to form a necklace that encloses a white throat. This bird can be found in parts of Middle East. The species has been introduced into many other places and feral populations have established themselves in parts of North America and New Zealand. Other common names of this bird include chukker (chuker or chukor), Indian chukar and keklik.
The chukar is a rotund 13–14 inch long partridge, with a light brown back, grey breast, and buff belly. The shades vary across the various populations. The face is white with a black gorget. It has rufous-streaked flanks, red legs and coral red bill. Sexes are similar, the female slightly smaller in size and lacking the spur. Their song is a noisy chuck-chuck-chukar-chukar from which the name is derived.
It is very similar to the rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) with which it has been lumped in the past but is browner on the back and has a yellowish tinge to the foreneck. The sharply defined gorget distinguishes this species from the red-legged partridge which has the black collar breaking into dark streaks near the breast.
The chukar partridge is part of a confusing group of "red-legged partridges". Several plumage variations within the widespread distribution of the chukar partridge have been described and designated as subspecies. There are fourteen recognized subspecies. This species is relatively unaffected by hunting or loss of habitat. Its numbers are largely affected by weather patterns during the breeding season. The release of captive stock in some parts of southern Europe can threaten native populations of rock partridge and red-legged partridge with which they may hybridize.
In the non-breeding season, chukar partridge are found in small coveys of 10 or more (up to 50) birds. In summer, chukars form pairs to breed. During this time, the cocks are very pugnacious calling and fighting. Males perform tidbitting displays, a form of courtship feeding where the male pecks at food and a female may visit to peck in response. The males may chase females with head lowered, wing lowered and neck fluffed. The male may also perform a high step stiff walk while making a special call. Males are monogamous.
This partridge has its native range in Asia, including, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, along the inner ranges of the Western Himalayas to Nepal. The habitat in the native range is rocky open hillsides with grass or scattered scrub or cultivation.
Chukar will take a wide variety of seeds and some insects as food. It also ingests grit. Birds feeding on succulent vegetation make up for their water needs but visit open water in summer. Chukar roost on rocky slopes or under shrubs. In winter, birds in the US selected protected niches or caves. A group may roost in a tight circle with their heads pointed outwards to conserve heat and keep a look out for predators. Chukar are sometimes preyed on by golden eagles.
The chukar is the national bird of Iraq and of Pakistan, where its name is derived from chakor in Sanskrit. Literary mentions of it in the northern areas of the Indian subcontinent date back to the Rig Veda (c. 1700 BC). In North Indian and Pakistani culture, as well as in Indian mythology, the chukar sometimes symbolizes intense, and often unrequited, love. It is said to be in love with the moon and to gaze at it constantly. Because of their pugnacious behavior during the breeding season they are kept in some areas as fighting birds.

Shuu Headcanons
Hi! I’m probably more than a little late to the Hatoful party, but I love these birbs. I got super into Hatoful in the late summer 2015, just in time for the re-release of Holiday Star. My favorite is...yeah. These are some headcanons I can think of for Dr. Murder.
He can’t sing. He has a ridiculously soothing speaking voice (Man, that Koyasu tho), but is a technical mess when he allows himself to try to sing. It’s probably a mixture of tension and a fear of letting himself be in touch with something that isn’t as cerebral as STEM.
He can sense when Miru and Kaku mock him for it, but knows Yuuya would never dare.
Anghel can’t even imagine him singing well. It’s that bad. He can just about get away with humming.
His natural laughter is actually kind of raucous, like an actual chukar partridge. Because he grew up feeling so removed from his family, though, he trained himself to tend towards the more restrained/refined(?) “hohoho” that we know now. If something catches him off guard as truly amusing, though, he’ll let it slip out. Luckily for him, not much would amuse him to that level.
Actually falling in love would break him. He wouldn’t know how to handle it. He’d assume it was some kind of all-consuming fascination that he may have to explore (like in Hiyoko’s ending, and even then not quite), but then realize that there’s much more to this person/bird in life than he could ever hope to preserve for himself in death.
Following this, he is deeply uncomfortable with any kind of romantic touch. It would take awhile for him to become more at ease with physical intimacy. He may be extremely aware of anatomy, but it’s often from a clinical (occasionally perversely so) perspective.
#hatoful boyfriend#shuu iwamine#headcanon#headcanons#no idea how many of these have been done#I may or may not have a stupidly indulgent fic idea for a shuu romance#can you tell I'm a poto dork?

In private, they are serious and critical, anxious, lonely, and constantly worried about the future. Plagued with constant self-doubt and the unending drive for perfection, Izzy is prone to self-isolation where they can work on eliminating their flaws and weaknesses. Because of this, Izzy is never satisfied with themself and constantly (yet silently and passively) seeks approval from others.

History
EARLY LIFE
Izzy was born as the youngest child to a conservative, religious family. Frustrated by endless comparisons between their siblings and the general restrictiveness of an authoritarian parenting style, Izzy sought recognition and approval by excelling in matters of the mind and artistic talent. This excellence always pleased their parents, for it was their favorite topic to discuss in polite conversation. However, Izzy’s other interests were not so well-received. Being an anxious child and with limited social exposure, Izzy sought to pursue the art of necromancy in order to glean knowledge from the experiences of those who had passed on.
FAMILY ISSUES
However, necromancy - or any sort of communion with the dead - was absolutely disallowed by their parents, claiming it was a blasphemous practice reserved for those whose souls were committed to the darkest region of the Beyond. So Izzy kept their studies a secret, practicing only at night and using their own coin to procure the supplies necessary to complete the rituals. Unfortunately, one fateful day, Izzy’s secret was exposed by the butcher, who in passing, told their parents about how Izzy was their favorite and most loyal customer. Their parents rushed home, went through Izzy’s things, and burned every scroll and resource related to necromancy that Izzy had accumulated over the years. Izzy was distraught, but acknowledging they had brought such an unholy practice into their parents’ home, Izzy accepted their fate begrudgingly. That was the beginning of the end of Izzy’s relationship with their parents.
Another area for discrepancy was the gendered expectations their parents placed on them. Izzy’s inability to adhere to traditionally accepted female roles endlessly frustrated their mother, but it was always assumed Izzy would grow out of it and conform as they grew. Feeling powerless and wanting to avoid conflict, Izzy typically found it easier to passively accept their parents’ wishes. It wasn’t until later when their parents began arranging a marriage contract for Izzy that these issues surfaced. Not knowing what to do, Izzy defied their parents’ wishes and consulted the dead for the first time in years. The invoked spirit advised Izzy to run.
So run, they did. Izzy gathered their most precious belongings and fled their hometown, ending up ultimately on the streets of Vesuvia.
ESTABLISHING A TRADE
The times of the Red Plague proved to be the ideal springboard for Izzy’s necromancy craft to flourish. At first, Izzy simply offered their talents pro bono, wanting to help assuage the mourning of those around them, but rumors of their talents spread, and soon they found themself steadily servicing a number of clients. They were able to eventually save up enough to purchase a permanent residence, converting the main area to a shop. Izzy’s trade saw success for a number of years before public interest in it began to decline.
A TRADE IN DECLINE & SHIFT TO DIVINATION
As the threat of the Red Plague and its resulting deaths lessened, so did the frequency of visits for Izzy’s clientele. Izzy soon became consumed with worry over their stability in the future. Should they choose a different craft to pursue now that their services were no longer in demand?
Being a homebody, Izzy typically spent their days in isolation, but the walls of the shop soon became stifling, a constant reminder that their trade would soon be as dead as the spirits they invoked. After months of worry, a paralyzing depression set in; Izzy could only be compelled to feed themself when their familiar, a gecko named Reuel, needed feeding as well.
One fateful day, Izzy meets Asra in the marketplace and has their fortune read. Izzy then impresses Asra by incidentally reading Asra’s fortune as well. Asra claims that Izzy is a natural and takes them as a student of divination in exchange for room and board. It is then that Izzy adds the much more profitable fortunetelling to the services they offer at the shop.

EPISODE - MEETING ASRA
One day, Izzy leaves the shop to buy crickets for Reuel and finds themself uncharacteristically wandering the city for hours after. They move from shop to shop, stand to stand, hoping for something to strike inspiration or distract them from their worries. It is then that Izzy happens upon a certain magician’s fortunetelling stand.
Though Izzy has always doubted the credibility of any fortunetellers’ predictions, they are totally arrested by the display of this particular magician. Or rather, his aura - carefree spontaneous, gentle, masterful ... it is an overwhelmingly reassuring aura which Izzy finds themself drawn to. Despite their best efforts, Izzy is unable to look away, utterly dazed and enraptured.
The magician notices Izzy’s interest and beckons to them. “Would you like to know what tomorrow brings?” he says cheerfully.
Flustered, Izzy answers with a small self-disapproving scoff, “I’m merely trying to get through today.”
A cat-like smile then pinches into the magician’s lips. “Then would you like to know what tonight brings?” A card flashes as he works his deck onto the table. “Death.” The Magician looks up at them expectantly.
This time, Izzy releases a magician-disapproving scoff. “Should I be impressed? That could apply to anyone. The Red Plague has claimed so many lives-”
“Not a physical death. You are ending something, changing your mind, ending a chapter of your life?”
Izzy freezes momentarily. It is a moment before they find words again. “That’s too vague-”
“Temperance. You’re considering moving from one trade to another.” His purple eyes smile up at Izzy. “Don’t worry. You’ll be good at it, whatever it is. I have that feeling.” When Izzy doesn’t reply, the magician continues by turning a third card. “The Hermit, reversed. You’ve been in hiding for a while, haven’t you?”
A gulp of air tightens in Izzy’s throat. “... how...?”
“The cards are saying the time for hiding is over, Hermit. It’s time to come out and share your knowledge with others.” The magician leans forward and rests his chin atop interlocked fingers.
Finding the jar of crickets slipping from their hands, Izzy snaps back into reality. A dark look crosses their eyes. “... Is this a prank? Have you been spying on me? Death? Temperance? Hermit?” With each word, they take a heavy step towards the magician’s table. “Mighty coincidental to just be assumptions, magician. Trickery at best.”
The magician shrugs. “It was in the cards-”
“THE CARDS?!” Izzy snaps. They grab the deck of cards. “And what’s in the cards for someone like you?! Someone who begs and-” Izzy turns the first card over, but their rage is immediately sidelined when they read the words at the bottom of the card. The face of a beggar stares back at them. They drop the card wordlessly on the table.
“... the Fool...” the Magician says. “You’re good at this.” He raises his hand, gesturing to take the cards back. “Come on. Give them back.”
But Izzy pulls away, overturning another card - just as the magician’s hand closes over it. For a moment, they stay like that, both holding either end of the card. Izzy blinks, feeling their face flushing pink.
This card reads the Lovers.
Flustered, Izzy releases the card. The Magician says nothing, studying the card for a moment. His eyes roll upwards along with his empty hand. “The rest of them. Please. These cards are special.”
But Izzy is already in the process of turning over another card. The Tower. Their face blanches, seeing the destructive vision affixed to it - fire climbing the tower’s walls, people falling to their deaths. The magician’s thumb closes over the falling bricks, and he takes the deck back.
“I...I’m sorry...” they offer, unable to make eye contact.
The magician shakes his head wearing a strained smile. “It’s alright. No harm done...” his voice trails off as he shuffles the cards together. When he is finished, he rests his chin smugly on his upraised fist. “You are surprisingly good at divination. Have you ever-”
“No-” Izzy shouts, suprising themself.
The magician blinks, taken aback at the abruptness of their answer. A dark smile works its way onto his face. He moves to pack up the rest of the artifacts on his stand. His face dips below the table. “On second thought, a little harm done...”
“W-what...?”
When he raises again, a beautiful white snake is climbing his arm. “But you could make it up to me by offering me and Faust a hot meal? I think I saw that in the cards too, just before I put them away.” He winks.
Izzy laughs, already feeling forgiven for their outburst. “Now that’s trickery at its finest.”
The magician shrugs again, “Might be~”
Izzy finds themself charmed. “Alright. It’s only fair. But I’ll warn you. I’m a horrible cook.”
“I can eat anything-,” the magician says in a singsong voice. What Izzy thought was a drape on the table transforms into a scarf, which the magician ties around his shoulders. “-No matter how awful.” He winks.
Izzy can’t help but fight back a blush. Honestly, there’s something special about this magician. They feel so safe next to him, like everything will be alright. Does he know some secret to happiness? Is it because he can divine the future with those cards? Is that why he seems so carefree? Izzy decides it would be worth it to spend the next hour or so finding out. “Alright.”
The magician smiles and gestures for Izzy to lead the way. They do.
“What’s your name, by the way?”
“Izzy. Yours?”
“Asra. And as I said, this is Faust.” He indicates the snake, now barely visibly peeking out of his shirt collar.
“She’s lovely~”
“Thank you.”
“I love reptiles too. I have a gecko at home - Reuel. You’ll meet him soon!”
“Can’t wait,” Asra beams.
They walk awkwardly together the rest of the way to the shop, talking about this and that in passing. Their small talk deepens after reaching the shop, breaching topics like the current state of the world, the origins of the Red Plague, and the existence of ghosts... They chat through dinner - some unfortunate cabbage soup that Izzy managed not to burn, and as if finding his aura attractive was not enough, Izzy finds themself thoroughly charmed by Asra’s intelligence and sense of humor. It’s nice having someone, a living person, in one’s home.
And... they liked him especially.
Izzy resolves to invite him over again. They need to see him again. “So, do you live around here?” Izzy asks as they clear the table.
“‘Around here,’ is a bit... nondescript, isn’t it?” He laughs. “Technically, yes?”
“Technically?” Izzy responds, puzzled. They dip the dirty dishes into the wash basin and turn to face him.
His smile turns downwards towards Faust, who is snuggled in his lap. “Here. There. Anywhere. I don’t live anywhere. Not anymore.”
Izzy snaps their fingers and points at him playfully. “Ah-HAH! You really ARE a beggar!”
“The card is called The Fool.” Asra smiles. “I told you were good at divination. A natural, even. You’ve really never done it before?”
“Is it similar to necromancy?” Izzy laughs indicating the macabre effects on their walls.
“Oh, is that what you do?” Asra laughs. “It might be. Do you want to learn about the cards?”
“Well, you said it yourself, I am looking to change trades. I ran into you at the right time, apparently.”
“I could teach you,” Asra answers with a serious look.
Izzy blushes and tucks a tuft of hair behind her ear. “... that is... kind of you, but I don’t have the resources to pay for lessons like that.”
“Do you have a spare room?” His cat-like smile works into the corners of his mouth.
Their eyes narrow in a knowing smile. “That’s presumptuous-”
“-Offer this Fool a room, then?” His smile spreads across his face playfully. “And a meal after each lesson? I think that would cover it.” He leans back in his chair, folding his arms behind his white hair. “And, I’ll teach you everything I know, Hermit.”
Izzy chokes on a laugh.
Gosh. They liked him.
They center themself, straightening out their blouse and clearing their throat. “... ok. I’ll get the room ready if you tell me about the cards.”
Asra beams back at them.
“I’d be glad to.”

Species Feature: Chukar Partridge
Chukar Partridges are one of the lesser known species of upland birds. While they are a popular game bird in certain areas they are often a farm raised and released bird rather than strictly wild. In terms of conservation, this bird rates relatively low on concern as they are often farm raised and their numbers have remained relatively steady. Fun fact: the Chukar is a species of game bird brought over from Pakistan!

Fantails, and white pigeons in general, are specifically bred from rock doves/rock pigeons - they're the same species! But the appearance of white birds means that in the massive change in how humans valued the species as a whole didn't hit them as hard.
We domesticated pigeons and bred them into all kinds of colors and shapes, into a gregariousness and high breeding rate distinct from their wild ancestors. We used to like and have uses for them - we ate their meat, their droppings are good fertilizer, their strong flight and homing instinct means it's possible to have them in a coop even in a city and they'll fly out to forage and return, instead of having to be penned and relying purely on their keepers to feed them. And crucially, that homing instinct has made it possible to use pigeons to send messages much faster than even people on horseback.
Then within the last hundred years that changed. We had the telegraph and other increasingly more reliable ways to communicate over long distances, we had more industrialized sources of meat and fertilizer, they started being seen as unhygenic, there were public campaigns to that effect... Imagine if within a few decades ninety percent of people started to regard dogs as filthy and stupid and left them increasingly to the streets.
Every rock dove is the descendant of pets and utility animals. They're feral, not wild - they still live in our cities and eat our leavings, still nest in our architecture. Catch a flock of adults and many can still become friendly pets, because their ancestors were bred to like humans.
And humans like pale animals! Some of the regard remains for pigeons with pure white feathers. Peace, purity, religious symbolism. They're all pigeons, all doves, it's just a color, and the various kinds of fantail aren't all white birds but that's another prized mutation.
But no matter how fanciful and derived a breed of pigeon is - different colors, different feathers - if it's released and chooses a mate freely, within what was it, two? generations its descendants are indistinguishable from the other feral birds. You'll get some with white patches, or even that are mostly white, if they've met up with recessive genes remaining from other white birds. Otherwise? It's just pigeons.
So all in all it's pretty interesting that white fantails have such a presence in Hatoful Boyfriend, let alone that they have so much status and power! I like to think that despite the Sumatera disease and Carneades there were still pigeon fanciers keeping white fantails as birds became sapient. These fantails were in a position to learn human things (language, plans, tools, societal structures) more quickly than the other pigeons and leveraged them in revolution and afterwards.
And white birds might have still been preferred by humans even as the world upended. Hiyoko says when menaced by punk pigeons that even she can't always pick out Ryouta, her childhood friend, from among other rock doves - presumably pigeons can do that themselves, they've got more advanced color vision - but she never mixes up Yuuya, Sakuya, and Okosan.
Interesting to have gulls as servile to white fantails and enforcing this hierarchy on colorful doves - gulls, of course, are opportunists, and also the gull species are distinct in a way that pigeon breeds aren't.
(Mourning doves and Luzon bleeding hearts aren't the same species as rock doves and were never domesticated. Chukars have mainly been 'kept' and bred as game birds to be released and shot. Button quails, golden pheasants, java finches, and various parakeets are kept as pets and bred to various colors but don't have the long history with us that rock doves do.)
