The full list of books I'm interested in reading. Spoiler before you open the read-more: This list has 500+ entries so it's a tad long. The only reason it isn't numbered is because of tumblr's character limit on blocks of text, which this far exceeds. It is, instead, bulleted and separated into chunks of 50 after the cut.

I'm pretty much constantly adding things to all of my lists- hence why I'm amending when this was last updated to the title itself- and will update this post anytime I update the wheel I use to randomize my next choice, which usually happens after I've added or subtracted a significant number of options.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part I

For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

That Pignon never thought twice about the poverty of what he was saying speaks volumes of the official colonial mind at the time.

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced

The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.

Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.

I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!

One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."

I’ve been reading a lot of original short stories lately, and really enjoying them! So I hope you enjoy them too. :)

Before the World Crumbles Away by AT Greenblatt - (cw: suicide) An artist and a tech designer meet in a park, during the end of the world. This is a story about optimism and struggling to engage and find connections even in an apocalypse, learning to confront a future where maybe things won't get better but still staying on your feet.

The Dragon That Flew Out of the Sun by Aliette de Bodard - History as a terrible and many-sided thing. A young girl trying to find the truth of why her people are refugees, and their enmity with the people who caused it.

things you don't say to city witches by Cassandra Khaw - A poem about exactly what the title says.

Nice Things by Ellen Klages - A woman returns to her mother’s home after her mother’s memorial service. A beautifully haunting piece about their fraught relationship and the power of memory and ritual. By the author of Passing Strange, which I already said I love!

Lest We Forget by Elizabeth Bear - A story about memory, guilt, terrorism and war crimes. This one digs its hooks into you. Also casually convergent with my current interests in (fictional) infectious disease and parasitology, thank you Resident Evil.

A Catalogue of Love at First Sight by Brit E.B. Hvide - A woman growing up and building a family in a world suffering from major climate change and ecological disaster. I know it sounds very simple, but I found it profoundly moving and hopeful. I love themes about family, love, loss, and the ways we deal with grief and try to shield ourselves from hurt. Also featuring a bi female protagonist.

Canst Thou Draw Out the Leviathan by Christopher Caldwell - The last voyage of a doomed whaling boat. Content warnings for a racist slur and some homophobia, but there is a happy ending. Happyish, at least. Features an interracial M/M relationship.

The Cinder Girl Burns Brightly by Theodora Goss - A Cinderella retelling in poetry.

Cavity by Theresa Delucci - "The first time you meet a murderer, you are in kindergarten." Sharp, dark, and biting. This story has a whole section of content warnings at the beginning, but still manages to end with a visceral satisfaction.

Translatio Corporis by Kat Howard - This is a lovely and gorgeously weird story about bodies, cities, illness, and what it means to create something out of your own substance.

Maybe we’re biased, but Gillian’s the best. She’s been at Gollancz nearly 20 years, and is the editor for Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Alastair Reynolds, Aliette de Bodard, Joanne Harris, Garth Nix, Elizabeth Bear, Patrick Rothfuss, Miles Cameron, Chris Wooding, Sarah Pinborough, Charlaine Harris… the list goes on! She is so involved in the SFF community, attending cons worldwide and she is staggeringly great at what she does. The only UK-based editor to be shortlisted for a Hugo award, she’s also genuinely one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Shortly after I first met her, she said something nice to me in the pub and I cried. On the plus side I set the bar for our future relationship very achievably low.

Marcus Gipps

Marcus has been in the biz for decades, starting as a bookseller and had a review Livejournal (yes, that's right, one of us) that helped him build respect with so many people in the industry. Any of the legendary, big names of SFF? He probably edits them. Michael Moorcock, Christopher Priest, Paul McAuley, Pat Cadigan, Stephen Baxter... He led the acquisition of THE LAST UNICORN once Peter S. Beagle got his rights back, he heads our WITCHER publishing, and his knowlege of SFF history is encyclopedic. He also leads our SF Gateway and Masterworks projects, archiving out of print SFF and saving them to keep in circulation. Marcus may be the most unflappable many on the planet, which is good because I'm extremely flappable so we balance out nicely.

Brendan finds the books that are going to be the classics of the future. He works with J. T. 2019 to-read list

2018 has been v interesting to me, book-wise, as I banned myself completely from all popular American books that everybody was reading this year - bc I realised I’ve been reading almost exclusively American and Polish authors and wanted to see what is being written in other countries as well - and this has thrown me in direction of many amazing, sometimes extremely w e i r d stories from all around the globe. I ALMOST managed to stick to the list I made year ago with your help, but lacked time to read some books. anyway, if you’re on goodreads, here are books I’ve read this year.

and I’m still keeping and expanding my list of non-American books here.

in 2019 I lift my ban on American authors, but want to kinda keep my list diverse in some ways. so my goal while making it was to have at least half of the books by authors not based in US, and have at least half authors to be females. eventually I ended up with list of 39 fiction + 4 non-fiction books, which you can see under “read more”; by my estimation 25 of fictions are by non-American authors and 28 by female authors.

I am not yet sure if I will stick to the list 100%, so if you have any great book to recommend, please do!

sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a place where we can access your ever growing list of to-reads? been facing a bit of a dry spell lately and i've always enjoyed your recs. also hope you don't mind if i ask where you source original stories to read from? i ask this with the course of honour in mind- found that through your blog- but mostly i am wondering if there is a Great Repository somewhere and i am yet to discover it, or if it's just a matter of following the right people :)
