Album Review: Chicago & Friends - Live at 55

Even as members have cycled in and out with increasing frequency in recent years, Chicago’s setlists have remained static. So when the band recruited some friends to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Chicago Transit Authority and pulled out such long-idled numbers as “Listen” and “In the Country” with Robert Randolph, ���South California Purples” and “Poem 58” with Steve Vai and the full version of “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day” with Judith Hill, the potential was exciting.

Hearing the songs as captured over two nights in November 2023 and released as Chicago & Friends - Live at 55, however, quickly dampens the enthusiasm. For the Chicago of 2024, down to three original members in keyboardist Robert Lamm, trombonist James Pankow and trumpeter Lee Loughnane surrounded by seven recent additions, sounds more like a tribute act than the actual Chicago. And while the presence of guitarists Randolph, Vai and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, who plays on “Make Me Smile” and a couple of other cuts, speaks to the powerful legacy of Chicago’s late co-founder Terry Kath, they are unable to help the band spark that old magic, which is available on 2024’s other live album from the band, the stupendous Chicago at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C. (9/16/1971).

To make room for their guests, Chicago whittled “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” down to “Make Me Smile,” “Color My World” and “Now More than Ever,” making the exercise pointless. And while vocalist Chris Daughtry adds some muscle to such tracks as “I’m a Man,” Hill is an ill-fitting choice in a band that never had a female lead; VoicePlay turn “Happy Man” into something better suited for “American Idol” and Robin Thicke sounds like Lamm used to sound.

Which leaves the modern Chicago and their latest Peter Cetera stand-in, Neil Donell, whose authenticity rests mostly in his inability to hit the high notes, which, given he’s 68, is understandable. So without scaling down such songs as “Questions 67 and 68” and “Call on Me,” Chicago would be better off dropping them. And the ’80s ballads, too.

Okay, let’s get to this Fun Stack of BTS. First pic is Mike and me with Yap Fong Yee, aka Mel, aka BuzzBuzz. She started out as our script supervisor, super important job on set, a good “Scripty” can elevate everyone’s work. She was so good at it that the Kings gave her her own episode to direct and then that episode was so good that she got another one & another one & another one... she directed 2 this season! The pigs one was hers and this new ep coming up. Here in this stack of photos you can see her in both her roles! What else is in here. Some much needed @patrickbrammall aka Andy taking us on a deep dive of his process of getting into character which involves A LOT of scotch tape. Who knew. Now you know. Normal. Also the late the great Peter Scolari who we miss so much on our show. He fit right into our nonsense and there wasn’t a day without a laughing fit. He was a genius actor and a light. And I don’t say that lightly. Then there’s @coltermikecolter doing a way too accurate imitation of my walk on the last slide. People who know me told me this is the truth😩🥴 And you can see our stand-ins/photo doubles sitting in for us while the crew builds the light. @coadyc has been my stand in all these seasons and I’ll take her anywhere. And Spelman, well, we wear his face on t-shirts for all that observe Spelman Day (slide 5). Hope you’ll like our next ep! We loved making it, it was ridiculous and there was room for plenty comedy in there. Excited to see how it turned out. Okayyyyy byyyyyeee you evil loving weirdos! Keep streaming us, it matters for a potential pick uppp 😜😘

My Thoughts about House of the Dragon 2x02

Poor Haelena. No one cares about her or is with her. They only care about the dead baby. She is a victim too.

Otto taking advantage of a dead child is just cruel. He is only about propaganda against Rhaenyra.

Alicent asking Haelena if she has seen her with cole was just, ist that your only concern right now? Your daughter has seen her child being murdered.

The procession was a bit much for my opinion. Haelena having a panic attack. She deserves better.

The whole Rhaenyra saying to Daemon that she cant trust him and never has is stupid. Why did she marry him then? She said herself that her claim is stronger with him and now it's suddenly not? I 'm sorry but i m on Daemons side in this. To be clear i dont support the dead of the child. But Daemon has never lied to her why would he now? I dont know what Rhaenyras goal is she has not taken action so far and voiced it. And tahat is getting on my nerves. She is sitting the whole episode on Dragonstone and does nothing significant. Sending Baela instead of Jace to patrol Kings Landing i have a bad feeling.

That Daemon left after this i can understand. It was time that he got out of there. He should have been in Harrenhall since ep 10. She is triving her strongest ally away. In the book most of the people stood behind her because of Daemon. And here they argue about Viserys. The hard truth is that Viserys named Rhaenyra heir to get rid of Daemon. He is right. She wasnt named because she was better suited for the job she was 14 at the time. And he kept her because he was feeling guilty because of what he did to her mother.

Daemons flight off in the sunset was beautiful filmed. But he could have said something to Baela.

Criston Cole is official the worst character in the whole series and that includes thrones to me. He should chocke when he speaks words like honor and dignity. And now he has all the power in hands. Cant wait to see it backfire.

Otto was always a character that i despised from the very beginning. I have always thought that i would enjoy it when he gets dismissed as hand. But he was actully very reasonable in that scene. I must give it to him that he always tried to avoid blodshed. Rhys Ifans is a very talented actor. His little laugh when Aegon said that that his father wanted him to be heir.

The Erryk Arryk scene was very sad. No wonder they sent Daemon away so quickly. If he had been there it wouldnt have happened. They missed the opurtunity for a great book quote here.

"Six Men or sixty he is still Daemon Targaryen"

I'm very tired of Alicent fucking Chole.

Oh and Rhaenys should get more scenes next episode. Don't waste her like that.

The episode felt quite boring to me. Im quite disappointed. I think it was a mistake that Miguel Sapochnik got fired. The writing is not good.

Rhaenyras chamber is a waste of space and money. The room with the dragon on the wall was a beautiful bedroom. They should have kept it. I dont reconise Dragonstone anymore. I understand the libary set but not Rhaenyras bedroom.
