Chris and I spent a magical holiday in Austria for a family friends destination wedding. From airbnb to the Schloss Leopoldskron and all the beautiful walkable places in between the quaint beautiful city of Salzburg. The Christmas markets were incredible, they also featured the Krampus tradition, a folkloric beast-like creature. We laughed and explored, we visited the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, and a group of us booked a private 4 hour Sound of Music tour. We explored the Nonnberg Abbey, went to Scholosspark Hellbrunn, saw the famous gazebo where the “I am 16 going on 17″ song was performed, we visited the church where Maria and Captain von Trapp married, this was located in Mondsee. The view was unreal as we drove through the mountains. We also hiked up the steepest of hills to tour through the Fortress Hohensalzburg. A group of us saw an outstanding lifelike marionette performance of The Nutcracker at the world’s oldest marionette theatre. A visit to Salzburg wouldn’t be complete without visiting Mozart’s Birthplace, where I learned all about his life, his relationship with his family, walked around the very room he was born in, and read the letters he wrote to his sister, one of which included his daily routine.  Among all the delicious traditional Austrian foods we enjoyed we also went out for a date-night at a delicious Syrian restaurant called 11:11 Make a Wish. The hospitality there was fantastic, and the art was very cool, we later found out that the artist was a friend of the owners.  Our friends were married at a Catholic church at Pfarre Mulln with Father Franz, who was the sweetest and funniest Father & Monk! He greeted folks from all over the world in various languages (English, Spanish, German, Romanian).  The reception took place in the Great Hall at Schloss Leopoldskron where a beautiful string quartet played, and where the most gorgeous library was located.  I never would have imagined visiting Austria in the dead of winter. As I reflect I am beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to visit such a magical place.  Here’s to the year ahead. May the whole year provide an abundance of love, respect, liberation, and joy. Lockdown Day 50. Now that it's December, all the malls in Kuala Lumpur are setting up their elaborate Christmas displays. We saw some absolutely amazing ones last year. 🎅 However, we were worried that because of the pandemic the displays might be cancelled or scaled back. It seems that worry was for naught. Christmas Abroad

This year I experienced my first christmas abroad in one of the oldest countries in Europe, Portugal. My auntie, uncle in law and younger cousin have recently moved out there so seeing as it was their first christmas in their new home, the rest of my family decided to join them. My uncle is from Portugal so the new and unfamiliar traditions to us, were the normal ceremonies to him. 

Christmas in Portugal and some other European countries isn’t actually celebrated on the 25th, like it is here in the UK but instead the evening before. Religion is a much bigger part to their christmas as Catholicism is very prominent there. Families often gather around the christmas tree and a crib to celebrate the birth of Jesus and then open and give their christmas presents late in the evening. For dinner they traditionally eat codfish with boiled potatoes and cabbage, so a bit different to our turkey, stuffing, veggies and gravy. Then for desert they eat a lot of fried, sugary donut type foods and rice pudding topped with cinnamon. All these differences being said, the atmosphere was just the same! People smiling, laughing, drinking and eating with their loved ones is what’s best about christmas! On the 25th we then celebrated christmas again yet in the British fashion but being a vegan, I still avoided the turkey!

I decided to take my 35mm point and shoot with me to document the holiday they way I love best, through a personal snapshot style approach. I wanted to capture the Portuguese christmas in a natural and honest way, which I hope I did. Here are some of the results!

We bought a Christmas tree today! 🎄The lights are long enough that we also strung them across our balcony door. The tree, lights, ornaments, and star topper cost less than $7USD at a local craft store! 🎉 Little Man is thrilled that his tree is his two favorite colors, red and gold. ♥️💛 * Last year, our real tree in Chicago was so tall he dropped the topper while sitting on daddy's shoulders putting it on. 😆 This year, he didn't have trouble with our tiny one. But it doesn't mean he loves it any less. He even helped put on the lights!🎊 * We're starting to feel the holiday spirit.
