Finding the Perfect Holiday Gift
As the Christmas holidays approach, I find myself making mental lists of all the people I want to give a holiday gift. If you’re like me, you want that Christmas gift to be special, something that they will cherish and make them smile. Have you ever received a gift that was given with absolutely no thought as to who you are or what you’re all about? I have, and I don’t ever want to give that kind of Christmas gift. I want the gifts I give to have some meaning.
Last Christmas, I received a large, beautiful basket filled with all sorts of goodies. The problem was, it was filled with things I don’t drink or eat. Of course, I appreciated being thought of at Christmas, but I ended up re-gifting those items to friends and family who could appreciate them. I did, however, keep the basket, I love baskets!
So, for this holiday season, I’m making a trait list. Next to each person’s name on my gift list, I am writing at least five traits I know about the person, including things I know the person doesn’t like. This is the first step in finding the perfect holiday gift!
When writing out the trait list, I also think of the constraints in their lives. For example, I have a friend who loves to tell jokes and make people laugh. I also know that person is on a diet. So, it would be highly remiss of me to give them a giant box of candy as a holiday gift, even if it was on sale.
I have another person on my gift list who loves animals and spends her spare time volunteering for an animal rescue organization. I also know that person works a full-time job and is always on the go, with little time to pamper herself. So, it doesn’t make sense for me to give her a gift certificate to a spa when she doesn’t have time to go, even if she could use the break. It would just add one more thing to her list of things to do.
So, now that I have their likes, dislikes, and constraints in front of me, it’s time to list some perfect holiday gifts that fit the person and their lifestyles. For example, for my jokester friend on a diet, I listed some books and videos on comedy, some funny t-shirts, and a set of coffee mugs with funny quotes as perfect holiday gift options. For my busy animal rescue friend, I listed some home spa products she can use in the shower, travel mugs with animal prints, and a set of brass dog figurines.
Honestly, it doesn’t take much time to make these lists. The result? Perfect holiday gifts that will be greatly appreciated and remembered for years to come!
