CHRISTINE MILLER
CHRISTINE MILLER
4 June 1918 - 18 November 1978
VICTIM OF JIM JONES
Christine Miller was a member of the cult, the Peoples Temple under the leadership of Jim Jones.
Miller was born in Brownsville, Texas and joined Jim Jones People Temple in Los Angeles. In 1978, she moved the newly built settlement named Jonestown in Guyana. There were rumours from ex-members that Jones was keeping people there against their will. Congressman Leo Ryan visited Jonestown with reporters as part of an investigation. Numerous Jones followers approached Ryan asking if he could take them with him when he leaves.
Ryan, reporters and defectors went to the airstrip and whilst waiting to leave, a truck drove up and they were shot at by loyal Jones followers. Later that day Jones called his followers to the pavilion and told his followers to drink poisoned Kool Aid. A sound recording of the event survived which features Millers interaction with Jones. Miller was the only known member who attempted to talk Jones out of it. Miller argued with him and stated that they should instead attempt to go to the Soviet Union; Jones told her it wasn’t feasible. She told Jones, ‘when we destroy ourselves, we are defeated’ and ‘I feel like as long as there is life, there’s hope. That’s my faith’. Miller also argued that the children deserved to live. Another follower Jim McElvane, criticised Miller for arguing with Jones, he told her that she was only standing where she was because of Jones - those in the pavilion applauded him. Miller didn’t give up, she continued to persuade Jones to stop what he was doing and mentioned Jones adopted son, but she was shouted down by his loyal followers.
It is unknown how Miller died that day, whether she was peer pressured into drinking the Kool-Aid or whether they killed her. What we know was that Miller was one of the 908 people that died that day. Miller remains a symbol of courage and is praised for standing up for herself and others, including the children.

Beauty Standards: Similarities Between Then and Now
In her book, The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath describes the many expectations faced by women in 1950’s America. She narrates this story through Esther, the main character, and depicts her constant struggle with conforming to standards placed on her in a society that over-values perfection in women. While this story was set in the 1950’s, many of these same societal ideologies regarding women have continued well throughout the years, into modern day society. Additionally, these expectations put on women, then and now, can be held at least partially responsible for why women are more likely to have certain mental illnesses such as anorexia, anxiety, and depression in comparison to men.
One of the standards that women have been pressured to follow is the standard for beauty, and we often do this by trying to change our body’s physical appearance. One of the many ways that we do this is through wearing makeup. Found in a study done in 2013, about 84 percent of women wear makeup and the average woman spends $15,000 on makeup alone within her lifetime. While there are many women that do wear makeup because it allows them to feel empowered in themselves and do use it as an outlet for their personal self-expression, there are also many women that feel pressured to wear makeup as an obligation in order to fit in. Media predominantly depicts an artificial standard for what normal women should look like and women who don’t fit into these certain, specific standards are under-represented or erased from media entirely. Instead of seeing makeup as an artistic outlet, many women are conditioned to see makeup as a necessity that they have to put time and effort into in order to be considered beautiful. With this, makeup is perceived as the bare minimum of what is acceptable in society and the act of not wearing makeup is met with feelings of personal guilt and shame in oneself. Female beauty standards also encourage women to pursue what’s considered perfect in other features besides their face, like their bodies. Women are two times more likely to develop eating disorders than men are, in which 1.9 percent of women experience anorexia in any year and between 0.5 percent and 1 percent of young women experience bulimia at any one time. Women feel pressured to starve themselves and are encouraged to alter features that make them unique in their outward appearances, regardless of how unhealthy this is both physically and mentally.
This plays into the double standard that Plath describes in The Bell Jar. Women during the 1950′s were expected to present themselves in a certain way while men were given the freedom to present themselves however they chose to. Women were seen as objects with a certain worth but were liable to lose that worth if they didn’t look or act a certain way. Although today’s society has progressed towards more feminist-centric views including body positivity in comparison to the 1950’s, we should continue to work more towards erasing the standards put on women that are inherently detrimental to both their mental and physical health.
