This movie is well written, perfectly cast, and just masterfully made. Unique in its telling of the people behind Germany. Not focusing on those knowingly oppressed by the Third Reich, but instead putting a spotlight on some who embraced it. The chemistry between Scarlett Johansson & Roman Griffin’s characters is truly magical and a tribute to single mothers everywhere. While his father fights on the Italian front, and after his older sister dies of influenza, Hitler Youth Johannes “Jojo” Betzler (and his imaginary friend version of Hitler) must confront the life changing discovery of the Jewish girl his mother’s hiding upstairs. This one is hilarious, and heartbreaking, I mean given the subject matter how could it not be? I was actually crying at some parts (Not saying WW2, and the Holocaust were hilarious, but the cast (including but not limited to: #RomanGriffinDavis as Jojo, #ThomasinMcKenzie as the “house guest”, #ScarlettJohansson as Jojo’s mother Rosie, Taika Waititi as Hitler 😆👌🏼, #SamRockwell as camp leader Capt. Klenzendorf with #RebelWilson and #AlfieAllen as his underlings, #StephenMerchant as Gestapo Agent Deertz, and #ArchieYates as Jojo’s friend Yorki) was able to give some much needed levity to what could’ve otherwise been a heavy or depressing movie/subject.) The tone of this movie was perfect (can Waititi do no wrong?!) - the montage of him getting ready/psyching himself up for camp, and our introduction to Adolf - awww. (Can german ScarJo be my mom?!) I sort of felt bad laughing at/with Nazi’s but omg Rockwell, Wilson, Allen, Merchant, Waititi. Davis and Yates were adorable together and compared to older/more hardened Nazis/Hitler Youth. I could totally see them becoming like a next gen Pegg and Frost. The growth of Jojo and Elsa’s relationship (and her relationship to Rosie) were well done and definately speaks to the conflict of the time (and present day) of remembering someone’s humanity when they and others like them have been labeled “the enemy”; Rosie’s response of “What they could.” to Jojo’s question of what they did was a gut punch.
