A goodbye
After almost 12 (!) years, it’s time for me to say goodbye to this blog. It will not be deleted though.
Here’s a (pretty rough and I’m sure not full) list of skaters featured here. They’re listed in alphabetical order by the first name (so “Ashley Wagner” is under “A” and not “W”). I know it’s not the correct way to do this thing but it was easier for me. Also, if you can’t find someone, try searching within the blog or just general Tumblr search.
Thank you for the company and bye!

Hello, coach-change anon again:) Turns out I don't have just two questions. Here goes: 1) What's the implication of Carreira/Ponomarenko moving up to seniors? Competitive pool outlook? 2) What's the implication of the Knierim going to be coached by Aljona Savchenko? Your thoughts about her going into coaching? 3) Original source for Scott's "Umbrellas" quote? The "naive kids..." one :) 4) What program was that Scott referenced in the show, the "a lot of passion/what were parents thinking" THANKS
This was another doozy of a reply, and for that I apologize. But I pretty much just try to answer all the questions above. Prettyyyyy fun stuffff :))) #I’m getting worse at this #CLICKBAIT stuff.
Hi again coach change anon! (finally, sorry for the hold up)
I’m just going to go through your questions in order because I feel like that’s easiest for both of us :)
Ok so Christina and Anthony, my sweet sweet children (who aren’t that much younger than me, so I’m just making this weird now). I am super proud of them and think that they are totally ready to move up to senior. They are still somewhat young, but given their accomplishments from this past season, I feel like moving up to senior’s probably a better choice than just sitting around in junior and being almost guaranteed to win everything. HOWEVER, this doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a smooth ride to the top for them. The US ice dance field is very deep, and has been for at least the past 10 years. Even with the shibs taking a season off, we already have our top 3 teams: JLB and KHaw, Bock, and HD, all of whom are training at the same rink with the same coaches, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. (quick tangent, but I sort of thought Madi and Evan were going to retire which would have opened up another top US dance spot, but I was wrong. Womp womp.) Furthermore, there are the teams who moved up to senior more recently (the Parsons, Carpenter and McNamara) who are pretty much just chilling and waiting for the already established teams to retire so that they can grab those top spots. Although it’s great that the US consistently has such excellent ice dance teams, this kind of creates a traffic jam of sorts that can be stunting to the development of the newer seniors. For example, if we look at Kaitlin and Jean Luc, they have been skating together for a little while and have been consistently in that 4th/5th place spot among the US teams for several years now. Although they are an absolutely fantastic team (I got to see them live about a month ago, that Austin Powers program was very high quality. A+.), by the time they have gotten to the place that they are now of being this “great new up and coming team”, they are already the same ages as the top teams from other countries like Papadakis and Cizeron. To make a long story short, although I am very excited for Christina and Anthony to be making this next step in their career, I also am a little nervous that they will get stuck waiting for the older teams to retire before they can move to the top. On the bright side, however, it seems that these two already have a bit more stacked résumé as well as a pretty loyal fan base as juniors, than many of the other up-and-coming US teams. I think that many people (including myself) see a lot of potential in them, and given the right amount of training and dedication, I fully believe that they may be able to surpass many of the other US teams who are already competing at the senior level. BUT, these are all just my takes and opinions, and I in no way am going to claim that I am an all-knowing ice dance god, or that I can predict the future of the sport. So really we’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.
I’m going to preface this by saying that I’m really not a huge pairs person. That being said, sure I’m supportive of the coaching change. I honestly did think that the Knierims were going to retire this year. Watching them skate, Chris especially kind of looked like he was ready to be done. Hopefully Aljona will maybe be able to restore some of that energy and passion for the sport into their skating (but again, I don’t really know all that much about them so I could be completely off base). I think a natural next step for a lot of skaters is to begin coaching. I’m happy that Aljona is choosing to stick around and contribute to the sport especially considered what a legendary pairs skater she is. I think it might actually be beneficial to all parties involved that Aljona won’t be taking any time off before jumping into coaching (although for god’s sake the girl at least deserves a nap or something) as she will have a very current take on how the sport works - simply from having competed just last season - which is not an advantage that all coaches have.
So that quote as said by Scottifer…“We were seventeen and nineteen at the time, so it was easy for us to portray these characters because it was sort of what we were: naïve kids who could fall in love.”…is on page 90 of their book (yes, I looked it up, I actually have a terrible memory for this sort of thing). I, unfortunately do not the own the book, but google books does! And it can be found here.
After a bit of research, I actually couldn’t find any information about the program itself. I know that it was the free dance from the 2002-2003 season, that it was their first year competing at junior, and that they got 7th at nationals. However, because (I think???), they didn’t compete internationally, there is pretty much no information on the program itself, nor could I find any videos (sorry). If you do want to see the clip from the show with Scott talking about the photo, you can find the link to the episode here. The entire costume fitting clip starts at about 18:10, and includes some other favorites such as “KAPOW” (at 19:00). The actual “That’s a lot of passion…” quote is at about 18:30.
Sorry I couldn’t be 100% helpful for all of your questions, but nonetheless, YOU’RE WELCOME. And thank you for valuing my ranting enough to continue coming back, anon!
:)

American skaters Chen and Zhou in top 3 after men’s short

American skaters Chen and Zhou in top 3 after men’s short
ASSAGO, Italy (AP) Olympic figure skating champions Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany set a world record as they claimed their first world title as a pair with a flawless program packed with daring and grace on Thursday.
The silver went to Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia skating fast, even if at times faltering, in eye-popping yellow polka dots to Christina Aguilera’s `’Candyman,” and the bronze to Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres of France, who kept their nerves and nailed the rest of their program after she fell badly on an early triple throw.
Massot’s mouth fell open as the free program score was read out: 162.86 points, topping their own world record at the Olympics just a month ago of 159.81 and more than 18 points ahead of the second-placed Russians. Their total score, 245.84, also set a record.
Article continues below …
`’It was exactly the season we wanted,” Massot said.
A former French skater, Massot teamed with Savchenko in 2014 after her former partner, Robyn Szolkowy, retired after their fifth world title together.
”’I realized today the crazy work I had to do over these four years,” Massot said. `’It was hard work for her to bring me to her level. And hard work for me to come to her level.”
The Germans’ mastery came through as Massot lifted Savchenko with just one arm, with super-high triple-twist lifts and jump combinations that earned them execution bonuses, and inventive moves like gliding across the ice with their inclined bodies forming an X.
Their musical choice suggested the height of their jumps and throws: `’La Terre vue du ciel,” or `’Earth viewed from heaven,” by the French-Moroccan composer Armand Amar. Savchenko-Massot opened with a sky-high triple-twist, followed with a throw triple flip, and a triple-double-double jump. The momentum continued through the final move, with Massot holding Savchenko aloft head-down, before spinning her gently up and down for the dramatic release. Both kissed the ice.
Savchenko said the emotional release at the end of the worlds was greater than at the Olympics because friends and family who couldn’t be in South Korea were with them in Italy. `’It was for us a motivation to be here. We gave all the energy. We skated with heart,” she said.
French pair James and Cipres added the throw triple salchow that nearly tripped them up just last week. James said she was having trouble recalibrating to the triple from quads. Her blade failed to grab the ice as she landed and she fell flat, sending a gasp through the crowd.
`’I got the wind knocked out of me,” she said, adding that over the last year `’I learned that a mistake can’t win or lose a competition but what you do next is what can change everything. … At that moment I forgot the pain, Morgan was asking me if I was OK, and I didn’t even reply. I was like, `I need to go into my next thing.”’
Tarasova and Morozov earned 144.24 with their routine, as he faltered on a couple of jumps.
Nathan Chen of the U.S. neatly vanquished ghosts of the Olympic short program to finish first going into the men’s final free.
Mikhail Kolyada of Russia was second with a program he simplified after the Pyeongchang Games. Vincent Zhou of the U.S. was one of the few skaters to improve his Olympic performance to place third.
After bombing the short in South Korea, Chen wanted to redeem himself at the worlds.
”Ultimately, I am proud of what I did,” Chen said.
The U.S. champion hit two quads, one in combination, but the landings were a little off and he was marked slightly down. Still, the 101.94 score was a huge improvement on the 82.27 at the Olympics, though still shy of his personal best.
Two favorites, Olympic silver medalist Shomo Uno of Japan and Jin Boyang of China, skated error-prone programs and remained within striking distance of the podium.
Uno, the only male Olympic medalist at the worlds, missed a triple-triple combo, tacking on a double after a step out. He finished in fifth despite a huge quad and triple axel. Jin nearly landed on the boards after an under-rotated quad, finishing in fourth going into the final free on Saturday.

Germany’s Aljona Savchenko, Bruno Massot earn gold in pairs figure skating
Tumblr media
A flawless free skate run won the German duo the gold.
The German team of Ajona Savchenko and Bruno Massot stole the show in pairs free skate, pulling off a record-breaking high score to leap into first place and grab the gold medal. Their score of 159.31 set an Olympic record for pairs figure skating.
Weinjing Sui and Cong Han of China took silver, while Canada’s team of Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford settled for the bronze. One of the gold medal favorites, Russians Evegeni Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, didn’t even make the podium after a poor free skate run.
It all came down to the end with the final four teams, and only five points separating the four. Savchenko and Massot needed a perfect run to rebound from their disappointing short program, and pulled off what might be the best of their career. Nearly flawless skating and tricks led to a stunning program that got the crowd on their feet. Their gold medal was well-earned in the end.
Duhamel and Radford were up after the Germans. They had a run up to their usual high standards, though a few minor technical issues cost them. With no margin for error at this level, that ultimately ended their shot at gold, but 153.33 was still good enough to get on the podium.
Despite entering the night first place, Sui and Han couldn’t recapture the magic of their short program. They had a rough start with multiple miscues, and the closing stretch wasn’t quite enough to make up for it. Once again, no margin for error — a 153.08 barely denied them first place.
Finally, Tarasova and Morozov capped off the night with Christina Aguilera’s “Candyman” — an odd choice for a gold medal contender, to say the least. It ended up being a disastrous run, with a 143.25 score taking them off the podium entirely.
Odds and ends
The only American team in the finals was the Knierim couple of Alexa and Chris. Despite being the most sickeningly sweet couple at the Olympics and skating to the Ghost soundtrack on Valentine’s Day, the Knierims had a rather poor run and finished near the bottom of the standings.
Keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, Annike Hocke and Ruben Blommaert of Germany used “Romeo and Juliet” by Abel Korzeniowki. They managed the weakest score in the field, however.
The Russians had three teams make it to the finals. The first one, Kristina Astakhova and Alexei Rogonov, used music from the La La Land soundtrack. Yet another solid choice from a team taking advantage of more choices this year — this is the first Olympics where music with lyrics is allowed. However, the music was the only highlight for Astakhova and Rogonov, who got a low score after multiple falls and mistakes.
France’s Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres had perhaps the boldest song choice yet, the Disturbed cover of “The Sound of Silence.” Their actual run was well-received despite a bad fall in the middle, leading them to a short-lived first place with a 143.19 score and 218.53 overall.
Not to be outdone, the Chinese duo of Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang skated to the Star Wars soundtrack. There were a few glaring errors in their program, though, which deflated their score and knocked them out of podium contention.
Last up was the top four teams, creating all the drama and tension you could want from Olympic figure skating.

Page 4: Jennifer Garner ready for romance -- Jennifer has proven she’s fine on her own but she’s eager for her happy ending and has even set her sights on some of Hollywood’s most eligible hunks like Chris Evans but seems happily single; she binge-watched Outlander and was totally taken with Sam Heughan and she also finds Martin Henderson very sexy but heard he has a girlfriend
Page 6: After a tumultuous few years Hayden Panettiere’s 2021 is looking bright and she’s been working on herself since her split from toxic ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson -- she’s taken control of her life and is making good choices -- she’s been able to rebuild her life and her relationship with her daughter Kaya who lives in Ukraine with her dad and next on her agenda is reviving her once-hot career
Page 7: Justin Bieber who’s been a devoted member of the controversial celeb-favored Hillsong Church for years is studying to become a minister -- Justin has long credited Hillsong and especially charismatic and recently fired pastor Carl Lentz for saving him from his dark period of drugs, public meltdowns and arrests -- Justin doesn’t plan to give up his music career but he feels there’s a bigger calling out there for him
* Jessica Simpson has signed deals for both a docuseries and a fictionalized series based on her life but not everyone is so pumped about her tell-all tendencies and least of all is her ex-husband Nick Lachey -- for Nick it’s just dredging up a past that’s better left alone and Nick hopes that Jessica goes easy on him in the scripted series but deep down knows there’s precious little chance of that
* Madonna is majorly inserting herself in her daughter Lourdes Leon’s love life and she’s constantly on the phone asking how things are going between Lourdes and her socialite beau of three years Jonathan Puglia and she wants to know when they’re making things official -- Madonna even pushes for double dates so she can bring her 26-year-old boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams -- Lourdes appreciates how much her mom cares but she’s finding all the micromanaging too much to handle
Page 8: Jason Aldean who boasts an $80 million fortune loves splashing his cash around especially when it comes to his children -- the singer who shares son Memphis and daughter Navy with wife Brittany and girls Kendyl and Keeley with his ex likes being seen as the moneybags and leaves tough love to the kids’ moms and he’s always pulling out $100 bills for his teens and buying his little ones new clothes, toys and high-tech gadgets even though they’re so young -- he’s definitely spoiling the kids but nobody complains about it so he just keeps on buying them stuff because nothing makes him happier
* The milestone 6-0 is still months away but George Clooney is planning to do some serious partying for his birthday and he’s sparing no expense -- he’s looking at celebrations across the States and Europe plus a boys-only getaway to Mexico
* Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are having a blast filming their first movie together so much so that tongues are wagging about the pair’s fiery chemistry on the set -- even though Leo and Jen behave like total pros when the cameras aren’t rolling there’s a running joke among the cast and crew that Jen’s marriage to Cooke Maroney could be in trouble -- of course the reality is that Jen is crazy about her husband and Leo who is dating model Camila Morrone has a strict rule never to get involved with costars but still there’s an attraction that can’t be denied

Page 28: Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart are planning to renew their vows on Valentine’s Day which is 12 years to the day after Harrison proposed to Calista on their sprawling Jackson Hole, Wyoming ranch -- Calista is incredibly touched that Harrison is organizing this and he’s thoughtfully arranging to have her favorite flowers to be flown in and has already booked a local band and a caterer and baker
Page 29: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski might be ready for baby No. 3 but friends are encouraging them to get their marriage on track first -- the two have had a tough couple of years and John can be hard to deal with and cranky when he’s working -- while the duo tend to put a super-positive spin on their marriage in public not everyone is convinced things are so rosy at home but Emily wants another child and so does John so they’re willing to take the risk
* Meghan Markle and Prince Harry plan to kick off 2021 with a much-needed tropical vacation -- after an emotionally turbulent year Meghan and Harry are ready for this break -- following a quiet Christmas at home the couple is looking forward to relaxing on a warm beach somewhere, sleeping in, soaking up nature’s beauty and reconnecting as a couple -- they’re considering a private island in Hawaii or off the coast of Fiji
Page 30: Taylor Swift who’s been collecting bridal magazines and wedding ideas since she was a teen will have to adjust to the idea of a small sequestered affair when her boyfriend Joe Alwyn officially pops the question -- the once-outgoing singer has turned into a hermit since hooking up with the British actor who insists on total privacy and loathes attention and now Tay’s inner circle is said to be worried that in Joe’s continued efforts to fly under the radar he’ll ultimately nix the lavish nuptials Taylor’s long envisioned
* Justin Timberlake and Olivia Wilde have a past -- dating briefly in 2011 and costarring in two films but they won’t have a future if Justin’s wife Jessica Biel has any say -- Justin is eager to work with newly single Olivia again but the collab between the old pals is a total no-no as far as Jess is concerned because she’s always seen Olivia as a threat and particularly now that she’s split from Jason Sudeikis
