#TheDavidsonCase by @juliecgilbert_writer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Every #heartfeltcase gets better and better. I don’t need tv to watch shows like Criminal minds. Just give me more books like that. I can see the story play out in my mind. Really enjoyed this book. Even getting over the fact that these are #Christianthrillers. #instagram #instabook #audiobookstagram #audiobooks #audible #review #detective #thriller (at Ajuda - Funchal) https://www.instagram.com/p/B36xxXJhBIF/?igshid=enyr6191nqch

BOOK REVIEW: If We Survive by Andrew Klavan
Tumblr media
This. Is. A. Very. Good. Book. I read it (last month?) and I haven't got the time to write a full review, so now I'm just pouring out pieces of what I've remembered since reading it. It was masterful, powerful and heart-warmingly compelling in its nature - as Andrew Klavan can only do in this genre. I have read only one of his books before - Crazy Dangerous - which is really crazy and really dangerous and really good as well. Now, If We Survive heightened my respect for him. I salute you, Sir. Synopsis: A group of teenagers with a pastor fly from California to the country of Costa Verdes to help build a wall of a classroom. On the very day of their flight back to America, a war erupts between the rebels and the government. Americans are being killed. When the rebels win the war, they begin looking for people against them. The group of Americans need to get past all the rebels and all the obstacles and all their own personal demons. Will they survive? In terms of the writing style, I loved the writing style in this one. It started like this:
We were in the cantina waiting for a bus when Mendoza walked in and shot the waiter dead.
Man, I love a novel which starts out good - it usually ends up even better. This did not disappoint; every page is riveting and charged with suspense. This is both character- and plot-driven. The characters are very different from one another.
Will Peterson, our narrator, is just an average 16-year-old boy who came from a troubled family. What I liked about him is the strong character development as the book progressed from page to page, chapter to chapter. I witnessed how he changed from this seemingly average boy to a very strong-willed man with a heart of gold. I give you my word: Mr. Klavan is a master. He will guide you through the change very skillfully; he will make you care and make you fall for this guy. I was not that impressed with Meredith. I know Mr. Klavan wanted his readers to be impressed by this character - she was very tough, strong, and fearless. She did not flinch when one of the rebel leaders pointed a gun at her. She did not cry a single tear when they faced the group of executioners. She did not anything. Which, for me, is just impossible. No matter how good that kind of character can be, it doesn't matter really, this girl is just unbelievable. I did not for a second think someone can really be that dauntless. I even liked Nikki. She's the girly one, too feminine and tooteenager if you know what I mean. She's the one who cried all the time, the one who complained about everything, yet she's very likable! I don't know, she's just the picture of a real woman under such circumstances. Toward the middle, we'll witness the transformation, which is even better. There's the intellectual Jim. I was annoyed by Jim, but I think annoying characters are necessary. So he was the one who claims to know a lot about politics and religion and the CIA and the like. Many times he said things that are so much crappy and laughable, and if I could, I would've strangled him with my hair. And of course, our man Palmer Dunn. Get to know him. Much like Will's character development, Palmer's also worked out very well. He's highly likable, too, because he's human.
It is plot-driven because the story is highly explosive. Klavan's words are so rich and powerful; each paragraph is a testament of life lessons - love, life, faith and hope. Not everything is about the good things to learn, there are also the dark parts, and these only add to the force of the plot. It was never slow; it engages you from the start. And the narration is very compelling; packed with wit and emotions, lots of humor and life. You'll never get bored. And you will not be disappointed; every word mentioned in the story is relevant to the plot, unlike in other novels in which too many things are being mentioned, those things having nothing to do with what's going on. Here, you'll hang on every word because every word is a story in itself. One thing I really admired about this novel is, there are certain parts that, in all honesty, made my heart jump real fast. My fingers were trembling, turning the pages, fearing what would happen next but nevertheless wanting to know what would happen next. That river scene is highly potent. And that scene toward the end, inside the prison, is super bright and forceful. I loved the novel. Four out of five stars, maybe because of Meredith. But don't let that stop you. A good book can't be that good without something bad about it. A strong book can't be that strong without some weakness in it. This book is perfect because of its imperfections. It's a very good thriller with touches of romance, Christianity, faith, humor and hope. Highly recommended.
