Diotrephes wanted to be the leader, but his selfishness led him to reject authority and disrupt community. In 3 John, John’s rebuke of Diotrephes’s actions reminds us of the dangers of self-centeredness. In this article, we’ll dive into the consequences of Diotrephes’s choices and the powerful lesson his story teaches us about selflessness in faith.
The Impact of Diotrephes’s Actions on the Church
Diotrephes’s self-centeredness didn’t just affect him; it fractured the community, sowing discord. His desire to be first ultimately isolated him, cutting him off from the wisdom of other leaders and leaving him unable to grow spiritually. His example warns us that self-centeredness within the church can create division, disrupting the unity God intends.
Scholarly Insight
Diotrephes’s actions reflect the challenges the early church faced with authority and hierarchy. Scholars note that Diotrephes’s behavior exemplifies the need for humility, accountability, and mutual submission within church communities. His story serves as an early example of the problems that arise when leaders prioritize personal power over collective mission.
Prayer
“Lord, guard us against the trap of self-centeredness. Give us hearts that seek to serve and to lift others up, remembering that our strength comes from You. Guide us to foster unity and love in our communities. Amen.”
Fun Fact
The name “Diotrephes” isn’t Hebrew; it’s Greek, and it suggests a connection to Greek heritage or culture, which may have influenced his leadership style. This cultural detail sheds light on the diversity within the early church and the challenges of uniting different backgrounds.
Reflective Questions
What are some ways self-centeredness can manifest in our own lives?
How can we encourage leaders in our communities to prioritize selflessness?
What actions can we take to build unity in our church?
Conclusion
Diotrephes’s story reminds us of the importance of selflessness in all areas of faith. By rejecting personal pride and seeking unity, we honor God’s mission and create stronger communities. Let’s use Diotrephes’s example as a reminder to put others before ourselves.

Romans 9 God's Sovereignty and the Power of Faith
Romans 9 – The Potter and the Clay: Understanding God’s Sovereignty
One of the most profound metaphors in Romans 9 is that of the potter and the clay. Paul uses this imagery to explain God’s absolute authority over His creation. Just as a potter shapes and molds clay into vessels for various purposes, so does God shape and direct the lives of human beings according to His will.
In Romans 9:20-21, Paul writes, “Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” (KJV). This passage addresses one of the most challenging aspects of theology: the relationship between divine sovereignty and human autonomy.
Tumblr media
The potter-clay metaphor emphasizes that God, as the Creator, has the right to determine the purpose of His creation. While we may struggle to understand why God allows certain events or chooses certain individuals, we must remember that He is the sovereign potter, shaping history and lives according to His divine purpose.
This metaphor also speaks to the intimacy of God’s involvement in our lives. Just as a potter carefully crafts each vessel, God is intimately involved in shaping the course of our lives. Every trial, blessing, and challenge is part of His perfect design for our spiritual growth.
Romans 9 challenges believers to embrace a posture of humility before God. We are the clay, not the potter, and our role is to trust that the potter knows what is best. This imagery calls us to surrender our lives to His shaping, allowing Him to mold us for His glory.
