Church and graphic design

We have seen the advent of the "christian hipster", and with him, the church running to catch up with branding, marketing, and cool graphic design.

A lot of church-goers probably would admit to liking these designs... OR, perhaps this transition is a little awkward for you and you feel something unnatural about the designs you see utilized in "secular" culture being used in church where you're talking about God and holiness.

Either way, we have to admit graphic design is being used and it is effecting the church culture of today

Is the coffee shop using their branding to communicate coffee or the people they want to drink it?... The church's new "target audience" are visual people. The church's visual identity is the first impression, a massive, powerful thing, and we're using it to say "Hi we're just like you, come join us," NOT "We're the body of Christ and this is what Jesus looks like."

If graphic design is that powerful, shouldn't we use it to communicate who really are, Who we really are about?

[a particular church in Portland] is utilizing graphic design to say something, and it's about who they actually are as a church. In today's culture, it's key for the church to recognize the power of graphic design and it's ability to be effective and communicate the most important message of all.

We can be relevant, trendy, AND communicate who we are as a church, it doesn't have to be one or the other. We should have good, cool design, but it should be thoughtful and used appropriately. This is an opportunity to use graphic design as a tool to further Christ's kingdom, so it should be done with intentionality, passion, and skill.

Have you ever thought what LOVE really means..? I mean REALLY... Not just a casually said "I love you's", not just an "I love Marmite and cheese" or "I love your hair"... I think we often say this word carelessly. Do I really love cereal as much as I love my brothers and sisters? Do I love you as much as I love Jesus? How did HE love...?! Well... I think Jesus is the one who represented what love TRULY means... To lay down his own life for the sake of mankind... So what can we learn today?
