Tina by Tina (4/6)
I met Christian Marquand on the snowy peaks of Megève where my family and the Villiers went to rent a chalet every year and invited me because I was an excellent skier. I even had a bronze chamois (it’s a competition). I met Christian on the slopes and I fell in love. They took me back to Paris and I was going to see Christian. And my family put this condition: "If you want to see each other, you have to get married." This is bourgeois bullsh*t. “I don’t want people to say that my daughter is the mistress of a friend of Vadim’s gang, it’s better to be his wife than his mistress, so my daughter, get married.” I think we all regretted it, but I got married at 17 and a half.
I was delighted. I started a new life, they called me madam. I was very happy and Christian knew lots of people. Astruc lived with us, Paul Gegauff the screenwriter for Godard, a very good screenwriter. He had a group of extremely nice friends and Brando. We were going to live with Brando for six months. Life with Christian was lively and full of friends. We lived at Brando's house. It was great, we rode motorcycles together. At the time, he was filming a great film with Jane Fonda. He had me try out as an Indian, because he wanted to make a film with me as an Indian. He didn't take me on, but these tests remained in the drawers of a production house. But my agent at the time called me one day and said: “Come to America for a western where you will play an Indian girl”. With Delon and Dean Martin, under the name of Tina Marquand, I made “Texas across the River”, a comedy western.
Tina interviewed by Jean Bloch in 2001. Published in January/June 2002 Cine Zine Zone number 134.
Very special thanks to @74paris for sharing this gem.

(It’s anon with movies!) i’m open to different genres except for horror movies and something too tooth-rotting romantic, and probably i’d like something made after 1990+!
Okay then, so I've had to remove a very big chunk out of the many romantic films in France. Below, a small list to see what you think about with no romance (except maybe a little bit for Amelie), as you wish and according to my tastes. You may know some of them, so let me know if you do, and if you liked them? I warn you that I'm not taking into account the controversy surrounding the directors. I'm only interested in the quality of the movies. I hope you'll find what you're looking for in this little panel. Normally, they are all available in english or with english subtitles.
But I have an objection the 90s were a good area for Luc Besson's action movies :
Nikita (La femme Nikita for the english speakers), Director Luc Besson
Léon (For english speakers Leon the professional), Director Luc Besson
Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc for english speakers), Luc Besson
2000 : Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien, director Dominic Moll
2000 : Le goût des autres (For english speakers Taste of others), director Agnès Jaoui
2001 : Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amelie for english speakers), Director : Jean Pierre Jeunet
2001 : La chambre des officiers, director François Dupeyron
2001, Le Pacte des loups, director Christophe Gans
2002 : L'auberge Espagnole, director : Cédric Klapisch
2002, Le Pianiste, director Roman Polanski
2002, Monsieur Batignole, director Gérard Jugnot
2003, Les Triplettes de Belleville, director Sylvain Chomet
2003, Swimming Pool, director François Ozon
2004 : Les Choristes (For english speakers The Chorus), director Christophe Barratier

Roxy Miéville in Goodbye to Language (Jean-Luc Godard, 2014)
Cast: Héloise Godet, Kamel Abdelli, Richard Chevalier, Zoé Bruneau, Christian Gregori, Jessica Erickson. Screenplay: Jean-Luc Godard. Cinematography: Fabrice Aragno.
Is Goodbye to Language the autumnal masterwork of a genius filmmaker? Or is it just an exercise in playing with old techniques -- montage, jump cuts, oblique and fragmented narrative -- in a new (at least to Godard) medium -- 3D? Not having seen the film in 3D, I'm not perhaps fully qualified to comment, but I have to say that it didn't open any new insights for me into the potential of film or the Godard oeuvre as a whole. That in the film Godard makes the wanderings of a dog more coherent and interesting than the conflicts of his human characters is telling: He is obviously more emotionally invested in the dog, played by his own pet, Roxy Miéville, than in the people, whose story can only be pieced together from the fragments of what they do and say to each other. Language, as the title suggests, is subordinate to direct sensation, in which the dog has an advantage over the incessantly chattering and analyzing humans. Godard suggests this through a barrage of quotations from philosophers and novelists, which keep tantalizing us away from simply absorbing the images that he also floods the film with -- the cinematographer, responsible for many of the novel 3D effects, is Fabrice Aragno. Even without 3D, Goodbye to Language is often quite beautiful, with its saturated colors, but I'm not convinced that it adds up to anything revelatory.

Dr. Hind Louali: The Artistic Expression Influenced by French Language and Culture
Exploring French Language and Cultural Influence in Artistic Expression with Dr. Hind Louali
According to Dr. Hind Louali, founder of French School of Austin - Ecole Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the French language and culture are esteemed in the world of art and exert a profound influence on artists across various mediums. This article explores how the nuances of French artistic traditions have shaped global creative landscapes, from literature and painting to film and fashion.
French culture, renowned for its deep historical roots and emphasis on intellectual rigor and aesthetic refinement, has long been a beacon for artists seeking inspiration. The French language itself, with its precise vocabulary and inherent musicality, offers a rich palette for poetic and literary expression. This linguistic elegance has captivated writers and poets around the world, prompting them to either adopt the French language in their work or imbue their native languages with its stylistic qualities.
In literature, the French tradition has been particularly influential. The works of French authors such as Marcel Proust, Victor Hugo, and Simone de Beauvoir have transcended national boundaries, their themes of human emotion, social struggle, and existential inquiry resonating universally. Proust's intricate descriptions and introspective style in "In Search of Lost Time" have inspired countless writers to explore the depths of memory and time in their narratives. Meanwhile, Hugo's passionate advocacy for social justice in novels like "Les Misérables" has ignited artistic endeavors that aim to illuminate and critique societal inequalities.
The influence of French culture extends robustly into the visual arts. Dr. Hind Louali, founder of French School of Austin - Ecole Jean-Jacques Rousseau mentions that French painters' revolutionary techniques have often set new directions for artistic expression. For instance, Impressionism, born in France, changed the course of painting with its emphasis on light and movement. Artists like Claude Monet and Edgar Degas captured moments with vividness that influenced painters far beyond France's borders, encouraging a more spontaneous, personal approach to art.
Moreover, the Surrealist movement, spearheaded by French writer André Breton, opened new avenues for artists to explore the unconscious mind. This movement's impact is evident in the works of global artists who adopt surrealism's dream-like and fantastical elements, demonstrating the movement's enduring appeal.
Cinema, too, has felt the touch of French artistic sensibility. The French New Wave, a cinematic movement of the late 1950s and 1960s, introduced innovative storytelling techniques and visual styles that rejected traditional cinematic norms. Directors like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut broke conventional narratives to focus more on character and auteur-driven perspectives, which have significantly influenced global filmmaking. Their techniques, from jump cuts to non-linear storytelling, continue to be foundational in both independent and mainstream cinema.
Fashion is another field in which French influence is unmistakable. Paris, often considered the fashion capital of the world, has been the launching pad for numerous groundbreaking designers such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. Their designs went beyond mere clothing, reflecting broader cultural themes and pioneering trends that dictated fashion worldwide. The elegance and innovation seen in French fashion have inspired designers globally, making an indelible mark on the industry.
Additionally, the French dedication to the culinary arts has also permeated global culture, encouraging a worldwide appreciation for gastronomy as a form of artistic expression. The meticulous preparation and presentation techniques championed by French chefs have elevated cooking to an art form, inspiring chefs around the world to treat their cuisine as a canvas for creativity.
Dr. Hind Louali, founder of French School of Austin - Ecole Jean-Jacques Rousseau, says that the French language and culture have been pivotal in shaping artistic expression across the globe. Whether through the poetic potential of the language, the groundbreaking techniques of its painters, the disruptive narratives of its filmmakers, or the trend-setting visions of its fashion designers, France has consistently fostered and exported a unique aesthetic and intellectual style. This cultural export has not only enriched global art forms but has also encouraged a continuous exchange of ideas and innovations, cementing French artistic traditions as central to the ongoing dialogue of global creativity.

To Adelio Ferrero and Ricardo Muñoz Suay
Venice, [8] September 1967
Questions to Luis Buñuel for the Milanese journal Cinema Nuovo by Adelio Ferrero and Ricardo Muñoz Suay, September 1967
1) We heard you say once, that the most important men of this century are Freud, Einstein, Lenin and Breton. Could you tell us a bit more about why?
All four have pointed towards and illuminated our path through life, they have enriched our understanding of ourselves, opened up a marvellous and poetic world, a new understanding of the universe, or, in a revolutionary sense, have led us towards a different kind of society that may be less unjust than our own.
2) How present is Spain in your ideological and cultural make-up?
As the earth that feeds and makes a tree grow. Although, culturally speaking, I owe a lot to France, because of my surrealist experience.
3) Eroticism and Catholicism are frequently joined in your films. What relationship do you see between two elements so apparently opposed?
Eroticism without Catholicism is only half the eroticism, because it lacks the sense of sin. I think it was Saint Thomas who said that, even for married couples in the Christian church, copulation was a venial sin.
4) Are you satisfied with Belle de jour? What made you choose Kessel’s novel?
What interested me in the novel was the conflict between the conscience of the heroine and her masochistic compulsions. I am never satisfied with my films.
5) And Simon of the Desert? We saw the film in Venice and liked it a lot. What have you done with the film. Do you intend to complete it?
I wanted to make it into a ten-reel film, but as my producer had already taken it to Venice, I abandoned that idea. Like other films I’ve made for Alatriste, the general public will get to see Simon of the Desert in ten or twelve years’ time.
6) What do you think of the ‘new waves’ in cinema today? Do they seem so ‘new’ to you?
Except for Godard, I don’t see anything new in the new waves. To my mind, the most human, the most vigorous new wave is happening in Brazil.
7) Have you seen The War is Over? What do you think of the film?
I haven’t seen the film. I will one day. I rarely go to the cinema.
